4 out of 5 stars Strong.......2007-06-23

As a guy who grew up on a steady diet of Dokken, Ratt, etc. My eyes were opened up when I purchased Stone Sour's new offering. I had heard 'Sillyworld' on KBPI several weeks ago and at that point I thought I was listening to a "poor man's" Pink Floyd cover band-I wrote Stone Sour off. Then, a few days ago, I heard 'Made of Scars' and I was hooked! I love this cd. A great blend of heavy, aggressive fist pumping tunes (30/30-150, Come What(ever) May, Hell & Consequences) with some very poignent songs like Zzyzx, Through Glass, and yes-Silly World. I will never relinquish my 80's hair band roots but bands like Stone Sour, Godsmack, KoRn, Puddle of Mudd, and others are definitely opening up my eyes to fresh, great new music.

5 out of 5 stars Corey Who?.......2007-05-20

I don't care who he is. He has talent, and lots of it. I thought "Through The Glass" was my first contact with this band, but I quickly found out that I was wrong. This CD was so good, and piqued my curiosity about this Taylor guy so much, that I have spent roughly $100 on the various "Corey Taylor Projects". I have yet to be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Another solid disc from Corey Taylor and company.......2007-04-13

I believe their debut to be superior to this cd, which is much more accessible to the general public, but it still has it's share of heavy moments. "Through Glass" is a catchy cross-over hit, "30/30-150" is a heavy metal song similar to Slipknot, and all of the songs on here have something to offer. Missing is the raw energy of their debut. This one is much more calculated and simplified. "Sillyworld", their current single, may be the worst song they have written. I just don't get how they can make that a single. If you are a fan of hard rock with a heavier metal side, you'll like this cd. Corey is one of the most recognizable vocalists in heavy music, and I think what he lacks in range, he makes up for by creating very catchy hooks.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Solid Follow-Up!!!.......2007-04-10

As good as 2002's Self-Titled debut was, It always sounded to me, a little too much like Slipknot....Especially Track 1. However that is not the case with 2006's "Come What(ever) May", this album shows Corey Taylor and the gang coming into their own. The only real similarity here is Taylor's voice, the rest is purely Stone Sour. This is very well one of the best new metal releases in quite awhile, there isn't a single bad song on it. The album starts with a bang (30/30-150) and ends in a classic rock ballad (Zzyzx Rd.) a song that has an almost Bob Seger sound at times...Yes, you read that corectly. It shows that these guys are finally stepping out the shadows of Slipknot and into their own.

5 out of 5 stars The Future of Rock`n`Roll.......2007-03-25

With the release of 'Come What(ever) May' & a ton of sold out shows World-Wide including the infamous Family Values Tour with other Hard Rock greats Deftones & KoRn, It's not ranting to say Stone Sour is more than just a side project now. In fact several Slipknot fans are worried that the recent popularity may be the sign of Corey Taylor leaving the band to stay on as frontman of Stone Sour full-time, Doubtful but a def. possibility now.

My favorite tracks include the first single '30/30-150', The catchy and head bang worthy 'Your God' & of course the World-Wide hit 'Through Glass' featuring deep meaningful lyrics that anyone can find easy to sing-a-long with and relate to. But of all the album one song sticks out most at least in my case the ballad 'Zzyzx Rd.' the vocals by Corey are mezmerizing and the song structure is beyond the rest of this album with an almost 'Oldies' feel. I applaud them for being brave enough to write such meaningful songs and move aside from there Metal roots a bit.

Stone Sour has set the example of what it means to be a Rock`n`Roll group in todays age and has been opening doors between Rock & Metal since the release of there debut album. In my humble opinion Stone Sour are easily one of (if not the) best Hard Rock groups in the scene today. Thank You.

2 out of 5 stars Great musicians but that is it.......2007-07-07

The lyrics are a typical whine whine whine that is enhanced by the singer acting like he has something beyond a superficial knowledge of the world. The result is a young person who watches blurbs of news clips and has listened to his crazy aunt about how bad and terrible America is. Don't profess to know about war unless you have served, and the same goes with politics. The singer has done neither, now of course he has the freedom to express his opinion because he is free, yet when all he does is smack talk about how we are not free and the flag means nothing then it is rather hypocritical. Do you even know how young this country is young man? The rest of the world that you speak of that is in a shystorm was there long before this country was founded. If you hate this country so much, you can leave at any time. Feel solace knowing that, because people in other parts of the world like Africa or the Soviet Union, do not have it so easy and would give anything to have the freedoms you have...the freedoms you so obviously misunderstand as you stoop over the zombies on your little soapbox. Musically this band is very, very good and I can take a couple of tripe songs, but when the entire album seems to be this singer jumping on the pain train to moan and wail a hyperbole of emotional nonsense, it gets old. I am throwing my copy in the garbage.

When you write a song, write about something you know because when you don't, you come off as nothing more than a cartoon of smokey wisps and buzzing sounds.

5 out of 5 stars New edition to a great follow up album.......2007-07-03

Again, the stone sour crew has again put together another collection of songs that will get fists pumping and people chanting. This album is at least as good as the first. There is no doubt of the slipknotish influence underneath, but the as it is unravelled and twisted back together throughout this album is far from what slipknot is. That is why corey taylor and his bandmates have this project, so they can explore other avenues of metal. Buy this version of the album folks. This is a special edition with 8 live tracks on DVD, along with 3 videos, and then 6 bonus tracks not included on the original album on the CD. Definate great value, and nice bonus to add to a collectors set. For first time buyers, get this version, second time buyers like me, well worth it.

Highlights-Your God, Made of Scars, Hell & Consequences, Through Glass.

Low's: None at this time.

Again, very strong sophmore effort from this Iowa based band.

4 out of 5 stars Revitalizing the Best Rock Release of 2006.......2007-06-29

Originally released last August, Corey Taylor (Slipknot) leads Stone Sour with the best Hard Rock release of 2006 called Come What(ever) May. In June 2007 they re-release the disk with 6 bonus tracks and a DVD. So let's break it down by original disk, bonus tracks and DVD....

The Original Disk From 2006:

There's no mistaking Corey Taylor's signature Slipknot screaming on Track 6 (Reborn), but Stone Sour mostly moves far away from Slipknot's complicated, chaotic arrangements to a more clearly sung, melodic rock sound. Make no mistake...Come What(ever) May is full of pounding Heavy Metal arrangements, but the vocals never stray into the hardcore Lamb of God I'm-the-Devil-and-I'm-pissed department. Instead you get driving music with quality singing.

And don't expect Nu Metal with Stone Sour...expect Hard Rock...period. I wouldn't classify Stone Sour as "old school" Metal either (you know, like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden). I would call these guys Modern Metal. Unlike the infestation of Nu Metal bands today, the guitars are set free in Stone Sour. James Root (also from Slipknot) and Josh Rand share the 6-string duties and blister their way through the disk. Ex-Soulfly drummer Ray Mayorga impresses on the skins (Godsmack's Shannon Larkin takes the sticks for Track 1). And Slipknot's stage manager Shawn Economaki rocks the bass.

There are standout tracks aplenty. Made of Scars (Track 5) is one of the best Hard Rock songs that I've heard in years. Track 3 (Hell & Consequences) is a close runner up. Track 9 (Socio) continues the melodic rock pattern, and Track 7 (Your God) had me singing along with its memorable "what am I supposed to do now" chorus after the first listen. Track 8 is the mainstream radio played hit Through Glass, and as I predicted in 2006, Track 4 (Sillyworld) has gotten its share of radio play in 2007 as well.

Often times head-banging, often times straight melodic rock. Either way, Corey Taylor's vocals are always understandable.

The Bonus Tracks:

Well...you know what they say about bonus tracks...if the songs weren't included on the original release it's because (fill in the blank). Most of the bonuses were taken from the Come What(ever) May recording sessions. The first bonus track called Suffer will greatly please Slipknot fans. The next three are fair with The Day I Let Go a bit darker than your typical Stone Sour. The last called The Frozen is a spoken word message. The surprise is a cover of Chris Isaak's Best Of Chris Isaak Wicked Game that's good enough for, and should get, radio-play.

The DVD:

The DVD is Stone Sour's real gift to fans with this re-release. I'm actually surprised that the package wasn't marketed as a performance DVD that includes the CD with bonus tracks (as opposed CD re-release with DVD and bonus tracks); I suspect that sales will not be as good because of this, especially among those that already own the CD.

First the DVD gives you the (censored) promo videos for 30/30-150, Through Glass, Sillyworld and Made of Scars. Then you get treated to a live performance (uncensored) from Moscow in October 2006 that includes:

1. 30/30-150
2. Orchids
3. Take a Number
4. Reborn
5. Your God
6. Inhale
7. Come What(ever) May
8. Bother
9. Through Glass
10. Blotter
11. Hell & Consequences
12. Get Inside

It's an excellent show where the boys must have huddled prior to going on and agreed to try to be as true to the studio versions as possible, because the songs sound great. The negatives to the DVD are that the picture is full screen and not up to today's widescreen, HD standards, and the only audio option is stereo...no Dolby 5.1 or DTS.

So the re-release of Come What(ever) May should certainly now be the first choice over the original release Come What(ever) May for Hard Rock fans that didn't buy in last year. If you already own the original CD, the price of the re-release is a lot less than a concert ticket and you get a full live performance on the DVD (without the danger from the mosh pit!!!)

I highly recommend the Come What(ever) May re-release to all Hard Rockers.

After validating every stripe of teen torment when working as masked members of Slipknot, vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root offer fans a chance to explore the sounds of their former, failed hard rock band, Stone Sour. Formed in 1992 and retired in 1997, Stone Sour played soulful, metallic hard rock in the vein of Alice in Chains, traces of which later appeared in looser, guitar-oriented Slipknot numbers like "Left Behind." The album opener, "Get Inside," and the snaky "Choose" kick with the agility of Pantera, while the mellower "Monolith" and "Blue Study" rely on Taylor's nasal vocals for emotional punch. Stone Sour probably wouldn't have made it out of Iowa in 2002 without the platinum pedigree of its erstwhile members; still, this is a respectable package of monster riffs and dynamic ideas. --Ian Christe

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-15

I loved this CD! oh yeah btw in 14 not 13 but yeah back to the cd.
My favorites are get inside, omega, idle hands, inhale, bother, and orchids. The whole CD was good but those are constants in my ipod routine :)

For anyone who has the new CD or wants it
it has a strong rock n roll root and then its what stone sour does best, playing the music they wanna play. I reccomend both as an avid slipknot fan and just as equal stone sour fan.

2 out of 5 stars not that good.......2007-05-08

Their sophmore effort is 10 better than this one, don't bother buying this one, theres only 2 good songs on this album, their 2nd cd is great from start to finish...
I bought this one after i had their 2nd album thinking it would be just as good, but i was dissapointed, just go out and buy---Stone Sour, Come What(ever) May.....

4 out of 5 stars 4.5... the total package.........2006-10-24

This cd rules! the last reviewer is obviously on some good drugs. The song "Blotter" itself is worth the price. I actually have been listening to this more of late. I liked "come whatever may" so i went back to my collection to re-check this cd.. And i think its better than the newer cd. Very thick production and Taylors ability to change vocal styles is a major plus here. Fits all songs. The last track is a rant of Taylors writing (I assume) and it is really quite good! So i must say that this cd really kicks major as*! Must buy!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2006-08-19

I can appreciate Slipknot for being very good at what they do, but I do not listen to them. I thought Stone Sour would be more my style. The more melodic heavy sound is what I prefer. However, Stone Sour is horrible at it. Breaking Benjamin is 1000 times better than this rehashed junk. There is no real feel for being genuine or poignant. Nothing that Stone Sour has created makes me feel connected to their music. I have listened to both Stone Sour and Come What(ever) May. Both albums were the same for me. I feel the same disconnection when I listen to Godsmack. The lyrics are so generic. The vocals and the music do not enhance each other, they just blend together in a noisy bland way. There is no distinct character to the lyrics, vocals or the music.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice debut album.......2006-08-06

Right from the beginning, you know this album is gonna make you wanna wreck your neck. Opening with the Blistering track "get inside", then just not stopping until track 8, where they blindside you with Bother, a slow track, that if you havn't heard this by now, then where have you been. This was what put them on the map from the Spider Man soundtrack (listed as Corey Taylor). Other highlights, Inhale and Take A Number. Really all of the tracks on this album are a highlight. If you like slipknot, or just a fan of loud, thrashing, melodic metal, get this album. Also, the DVD version with bonus tracks, very excellent addition as well, buy that first, if not, just having this version will be pleasing as well, just a little cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars Even better version of this album, must have.......2006-08-06

I own both versions of this album, and this one extremely worth the extra money spent.

Also, the DVD (featuring the videos for bother, get inside, and Inhale) and bonus tracks (14. Rules of Evidence
15. Wicked 16. Inside the Cynic 17. Kill Everybody 18. Road Hogs ) are a very excellent addition. All of these songs are all worthy to be on the album originally, but hey, record companies have to make sure they can get more money, it is a business. Get this album, you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Knot Your Average Band........2006-07-11

Before he got pigeonholed as the mask-wearing, profanity-spewing frontman of Slipknot, Corey Taylor resurrected Stone Sour, his original group, in 2002. And it's a good thing he did! Few people realize just what a dynamic vocalist he can be, and with Stone Sour's proper debut, Taylor shows off all he is capable of. Heck, I'm not the biggest fan of the 'Knot, but I was really surprised when I heard Stone Sour for the first time.
There are obviously elements of Stone Sour that smell like Slipknot (afterall, they also share a guitarist in James Root) but this is one side-project that doesn't end up being merely an extension of the original band.

The most recognizable song on here is easily "Bother," a song which you may remember hearing on the radio, seeing on MTV and appearing on the "Spider-Man" soundtrack. "Bother," an all acoustic song, marks a change of pace for Taylor. No more does he have to shriek or scream to get his point across, as this dark ballad displays much depth and emotion in his singing voice, something rarely heard in Slipknot. "Orchids" and "Inhale" are two songs that stand out as well. Both are moderately heavy, but have more modern hard-rock appeal. "Get Inside," the opening track, is obviously intended to gently guide the average Slipknot fan into the album, as it sounds just a bit recycled and familiar, the only downside to the album.

For those getting the deluxe version of the album, not only are we treated to a DVD containing all three music videos from the album -- "Get Inside," "Bother" and "Inhale" -- but we also get five bonus tracks. "Road Hogs" and "Kill Everybody" are demo tracks from 2000, and don't really fare well with the rest of the material. However, "Rules Of Evidence," "The Wicked" and "Inside The Cynic" (which popped up on the "Freddy Vs. Jason" soundtrack) are just as good as the rest of the album, and rightfully belong. Overall, it's an outstanding effort, and thankfully, Stone Sour will have a new album out again within the coming weeks. I highly recommend this album to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5/5 rounded up to 5..........2005-10-17

This is an amazing album. Here we go with the ratings for each song.

Get Inside - 5/5 - Very Slipknot-ish. The fact that it's so alike yet so different is kind of scary. I love the solo in this song. It in a way, adds to the agressiveness of the overall song. The lyrics are good too.

Orchids - 5/5 - This is the first song that I couldn't stop listening to. It's a very good song with an interesting guitar part. I love the vocals because Corey always has a hint of emotion. But in this song, it just screams emotion.

Cold Reader - 3/5 - I have to honestly say I don't like this song too much. I can listen to it, but I don't like the way it sounds. It could've been better.

Blotter - 5/5 - I love the vocals. Just so interesting. And the way he goes from like the sick demented vocals to the voice we all know and love. Great song.

Choose - 5/5 - As a friend of mine said, "Wow those are awesome lyrics!" He stands corrected. I like the beginning where the music switches through each side of your headphones/speakers. He has great vocals on this.

Monolith - 5/5 - If you don't love this song, you are seriously like, I don't even know where to begin. This is such a good song. Listen to it and you'll know why it's so hard to explain.

Inhale - 5/5 - Another single. But it's amazing so it works. The guitar part is awesome. The vocals on this are very pretty and the lyrics are sad. Good song.

Bother - 5/5 - This is the best vocal work I've seen come from Corey to date. It's just so amazing. This song is so sad. And the fact that Corey plays the guitar and sings in this song just makes it so much better.

Blue Study - 5/5 - Lyrics are great. The chorus could've been better but it's still a good song. I love the melody and tune of this song. It's amazing.

Take A Number - 5/5 - This song should be split up for vocals and lyrics. I maen they are both so amazing. Amazing song. I love it. It's so powerful.

Idle Hands - 5/5 - Once again, great lyrics. Great guitar part. I like the vocals on this too.

Tumult - 4/5 - I'm not loving the little sounds with the, you know I don't even know what the hell it is. But I like the vocals.

Omega - 5/5 - Powerful & turthful. Corey has a hot voice which is a plus i must admit. But I really love this poem. It's amazing.

Rules of Evidence - 5/5 - Great lyrics, great song.

The Wicked - 5/5 - I don't like the chorus but we can all get over it. It's a good song other than that. I liek the lyrics.

Inside The Cynic - 5/5 - Good song, great lyrics, great guitars.

Kill Everybody - 5/5 - I'm not sure what the purpose of the little pig noises are (or whatever it is) but besides that, it's an overall good song.

Road Hogs - 5/5 - I love this song. It's hilarious if you get it. Vocals are powerful and driven. Great song.

Average rating is 4.5 rounded up to 5.

5 out of 5 stars Still Love It!!.......2005-06-25

It's been two years since this album was released and the guys are going back into the studio to do another this comming January.

This album is one of the best I have heard ever. If you like alternative rock or rock this is the perfect album to have in your collection. Corey's voice really soars over the tracks, this is not as previlant in the three Slipknot albums. Instead of screaming so much he really gets melodic and it's beautiful. Don't get me wrong though this album is still hard like on the tracks "Get Inside", "Cold Reader", "Idle Hands", "Tumult", "The Wicked", and "Kill Everybody". But he shows his true range in his voice on "Monolith", "Inhale", "Bother", "Blue Study", and "Rules of Evidence".

But really if anything you should buy the cd for the tracks "Omega" and "Road Hogs". "Omega" is a poem that Corey recites with a lot of emotion. "Road Hogs" is just a funny song(if you understand what it means).

And the other person that reviewed this CD and said that if you like older Slipknot then you shouldn't buy this, that's a lie. A lot of the older Slipknot is better than the new stuff. I am a big Slipknot and StoneSour fan, you can be both, ya know. But if your looking for another Slipknot album don't exspect that out of this CD this is a whole other band with their own sound.

Another reason for buying this CD is so that you can watch the videos on the DVD over and over, they are really awesome.

I don't ever get tired of listening to this album.

I can't wait until the next StoneSour album comes out!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet Slipknot Side Project Effort.......2006-08-27

For those who don't know, Stone Sour consists of two members of the popular power metallers Slipknot. It's a solo project of vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root. This is their sophomore release. Although Stone Sour is a tad more groove based and accessible, they've still got the Slipknot signature of angry crankiness. This time on "Come What(ever) May" the sound changes slightly to more melodic than a heavier crunch. It features the tracks "30/30-150," "Made of Scars" and "Reborn," making it the best yet Slipknot side project effort.

Ely Guerra has been compared to PJ Harvey and Joni Mitchell, not to mention fellow Mexican music diva Lila Downs. But whereas Downs's music looks back as it looks forward---some of her influences are traditions that go back centuries---Guerra has always been firmly entrenched in modern day styles on both sides of the border. Her fourth album opens with "Te Amo, I Love You," which is a Spanish language rocker that ferociously roars. Soon she turns to touch on percolating electronic pop, subdued ballads and organic urban grooves that recalls songwriter Joe Henry. Amidst these different music flavors, Guerra's voice grandly soars overhead, coos to a lover, whispers and cajoles, proving she is as versatile as her backing. It's no surprise that the album is called Sweet and Sour, Hot Y Spicy; Guerra shares a lot of different sides of herself on it. Indeed, Guerra's decade-long career is an illustrious one, but this is an album is a real bright spot. --Tad Hendrickson

4 out of 5 stars Sensual, Sexy, Sweet, and Spicy.......2006-07-21

Ely Guerra is one of the only true Mexican female rockers out there. She really knows how to rock, don't expect just soft rock. One of the most unique in her craft. She can go from having an soft angelic voice like Joni Mitchell to an angry PJ Harvey. "Ojos Claros, Labios Rosas" is definitely one of the standout tracks on the album. "Angelito Heart" is one of the sweetest songs you will ever hear. The song sounds like it should be in a film. This album will definitely grown on you after the second or third listen. In no way is Guerra a mainstream artist. She is modern, but she does her own thing. In "Puerto Vallarta" she sounds like Andrea Echeverri. And who can resist a beautiful woman repeating over and over again kiss me in "Besame."

4 out of 5 stars sensualidad + inteligencia = Ely Guerra.......2006-03-22

3 out of 5 stars Similar to Julieta Venegas and Andrea Echeverri... but flat and uninteresting.......2006-03-06

I first heard of Ely Guerra when she released the single "Tengo Frio". Her sound was compelling and sexy. I was immediately attracted to her music. So I picked up "Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy". While it's not a bad album, it is mostly flat. Combining elements of rock and electronica, the end result shows no particularly outstanding parts, when you listen through it.

Though Ely Guerra somewhat belongs in the same league as Julieta Venegas and Aterciopelados' Andrea Echeverri, this album leaves her behind the other two. I am going to be a bit more skeptical before I check out her future works.

5 out of 5 stars Best work of La Guerra.......2005-11-24

I am a huge fan of Ely since her first record, she is my favorite Mexican singer ever, I love hearing her voice, she sounds like an angel, and she is very feminine. This record is like the redemption of her previous works, she faces the past and the future, the classic and the modern, the intimate and familiar. She undresses her soul, open her heart and let you discover her world. The songs are revealing a new part of her art, some are funny, some are melancholic, but after you hear them you will enjoy them every time. Very creative record!
My favorite songs are Quiereme mucho, Pa-ra-ti.

Album Description

Bitch and Animal is a fresh, funky, animated duo of multi-instrumentalists, the kind you probably won't hear on the radio or see on MTV. They react to their surroundings by writing and performing sexually-energized songs that move butts and bust guts, using piles of instruments to explore piles of different musical styles. To record their new album, Sour Juice And Rhyme, Bitch and Animal locked themselves up in a house in the country, connected with nature and played croquet until their arms were sore.

With the help of co-producer June Millington (best known as the leader of the '70s rock band Fanny), Bitch and Animal effectively channeled the energetic vibes and hilarious antics of their live shows, giving Sour Juice And Rhyme more of a carefree spirit than their previous album, 2001's Eternally Hard. Bouts of comic storytelling rub shoulders with somber balladry, percussive spoken word, Carter-family country and rap. It's a sea of genres, moods and messages, expertly mixed together by two geeks living on a farm, letting it all hang out.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best but.......2006-02-27

Ahhh...much love for the (lamentably not currently together) duo of Bitch and Animal. I much preferred their two previous releases-Eternally Hard and What's That Smell. However, there are still some worthy tracks on this release. "Pac Man" is a sweet unique lovesong, "1/2 Naked" and "Feminist Housewives" are both hilarious and "Secret Candy" is a brilliantly comedic feminist response to misogyny in rap lyrics. The rest of the songs were too self-consciously artsy for my taste. These are, however, two women with an articulate perspective and beautiful voices so I don't mean to discourage anyone from delving into their catalogue; an album that is not up to their usual standard is still quite good. If they ever tour together again, definitely make a point to go see them as they are at their best live.

5 out of 5 stars It takes a lot for me to rate something as perfect..........2005-01-09

I've been obsessed with this CD since I purchased it about six months ago. It's one of the few CDs I can actually listen to from beginning to end and love every song. The lyrics are genuine, the songs are simple yet entertaining...their main instruments seem to be just a violin and some bongos, yet they've created something so unique with such few resources. Obviously their music is directed toward a certain group, but I urge all music lovers to give this a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Totally Disagree!.......2004-03-17

I think this album is great!!! Sure they're not entirely pleased about being lesbian women in the world today, but it sounds like the world hasn't exactly given them a lot of reason to be. And I really don't think that's the point either. I got this album because B and A have talent, a fresh sound to emphasize it, and a sense of humor. The message of their music IS love and tolerance....even their most agressive songs (aka Secret Candy) preaches that. I would advise people to go sample them on Ani D's website before making a decision about them, but don't just give up on them because of one unkind review.

1 out of 5 stars dont waste your money!.......2004-03-15

I just saw these two in concert. they looked interesting, so i thought, hey, i'll go see them...little did i know that they are a couple of insecure, talentless women who wish they had something that men do.....the whole show was about how angry thay are to be lesbian women....get over it! i'm sure glad this is to be their last tour together....
save your money, dont buy this cd, do not support people that are so hateful and angry.....in a time when we need more love in this world.....

Professional album from 1964. A very good selection of tearful songs by one of greatest singer and musician.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ALBUM.......2006-07-22

EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM HAS TO DO WITH CRYING AND TEARS. SOME OF THE ARRANGEMENTS ARE SO LOVELY YOU WILL WANT TO HEAR THE SONGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. RAY'S VOICE NEVER SOUNDED BETTER. AFTER LISTENING TO THIS,IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY RAY LEFT ATLANTIC RECORDS WHERE HE RECORDED MUSIC ON A LIMITED BUDGET, AND CAME TO ABC MUSIC, WHERE THEY PROVIDED HIM WITH ORCHESTRAS, CHOIRS, AND BETTER RECORDING STUDIOS TO EXPAND HIS REPERTOIRE.

4 out of 5 stars Ray Charles singing songs about crying and tears.......2004-06-23

"Sweet & Sour Tears" might be a concept album in that all of the songs sung by Ray Charles on this 1964 album have the words "cry," "crying" or "tears" in the title (or related terms like "weep" and "teardrops"), but it is not exactly a thematic unity. If anything Charles likes to mix up his genres, moving from jazz to country and then to soul and pop. Overall the slow and more sentimental songs do not fare as well as the more upbeat numbers such as "Don't Cry, Baby" and "Baby, Don't You Cry" (really, those are two different songs). The best of the bunch would be "Cry Me a River," which makes some nice use of the brass section behind the vocals. These songs really make the slower tracks seem rather ponderous with their use of strings and too often the sentimentality of the songs just do not work as well.

Actually, the big surprise here is that when Rhino reissued this CD the seven bonus tracks they tacked on at the end, culled from the early part of Charles' career (1956-71), have the best songs on the album. The choices all continue the original album's crying motif and the best are the 1956 R&B track Henry Glover's "Drown in My Own Tears" and the 1964 hit "I Wake Up Crying," written by the team of Bacharach & David. They also included "Crying Time," one of the earliest "country" songs that Ray Charles recorded, although it still has blues and jazz elements in it. These bonus tracks get this album up to the 4.5 star point, but I still have to round down just because the credit goes to the producers at Rhino and not Charles. This is not one of the top ten albums you would want to include in your music library, but for fans of the late great Ray Charles it certainly deserves strong consideration for selections from the second tier.

5 out of 5 stars CONCEPT ALBUM.......2001-10-23

What a record ! You'll find in it the twelve songs recorded in 1964 plus seven extra songs whose theme is sorrow and tears. This CD is a must-buy for any music lover desiring to discover Ray - the Genius - Charles but still hesitating in front of the numerous compilations available.

The incredible thing about SWEET & SOUR TEARS is that, after having heard it, you could swear it's a compilation. But it's not. It's just one of the average recordings of a man who turned into gold whatever song he played, a man whose musical production during the fifties and the sixties is a unique and admirable legacy.

By the way, Ray is still alive and well. So don't miss him the next time he's in town. And dont' forget to take your children with you, they'll be hypnotized and will destroy your library to find the CD's of the Genius.

A CD zone essential stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The one single CD of Ray's to buy.......2000-01-18

There is no way to jam into one album an overview that encompasses the scope of the greatest musician of the twentieth century (sorry Duke Ellington, sorry Elvis, sorry James Brown and sorry Hank) but this album from 1964 when Ray was at the peak of his vocal and exploratory powers, remastered and with unissued cuts that even surpass some of the original list ("I Wake Up Crying" might be the best Bacharach-David cover ever) makes a good stab at it. Jazz, blues, middle-pop, a little rock-and-roll, some great country (If "A Tear Fell" does'nt have you waltzing across the floor, you're dead) all rolled-in together in one superb LP. A great start to the most essential of collections.

Album Description

The special edition is jam-packed with extensive bonus material. The audio portion boasts six previously unreleased and unavailable tracks, including an acoustic cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game," recorded live for a Canadian radio performance earlier this year. The bonus DVD (Disc 2) features all four music videos from Come What(ever) May: "30/30-150," "Through Glass," "sillyworld" and the band's latest "Made of Scars." In addition, the DVD includes a never-before-seen full concert performance. Filmed in October 2006 in Moscow at the RAMP awards, the concert documents Stone Sour's first and only visit to Russia, a must-have for fans. "Now before all of you fans get upset about a re-release, (because I know how you are), let me just say that I am an avid music fan and a record collector. That's why, when the decision was made to release a special edition, we knew that it had to be just that: special," says guitarist Josh Rand. "We added everything we could possibly get our hands on, including an entire show from Russia, making it only the greatest special edition ever! You guys are gonna love it!"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another decent album, great special edition.......2007-07-03

Highlights-Your God, Made of Scars, Hell & Consequences, Through Glass.

Low's: None at this time.

Again, very strong sophmore effort from this Iowa based band.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some Problems with Back-Up Musicians and Song Order.......2007-02-27

Having followed Shack for several years, I, too, had long awaited this release. I thought the build-up caused my mild disappointment upon initial listenings; however, I do think there are several problems.

I don't think "Tie Me Down" (backed with the entirely forgettable "Uncle Smaegel's Cardigan") was the best choice for the first single or to lead off the album. It shows off one of the main flaws of this album; namely...

The guest musicians don't always seem quite in touch with the soul of Shack. It's as if their tracks are laid down on Shack's barebones songs, and given this distraction it's hard at times to tell if the tracks are as well wrought as those on previous, stellar releases.

"Cup of Tea," which was the second single, is a far better track and shows off Shack's trademark sound. Although I would have liked the acoustic guitar figure at the start of the song to have gone on a little longer before the rest of the band kicked in. This could have kicked off the album, had it been preceded by sound effects. But maybe that Pink Floyd-style album intro is too dated.

In addition to "Cup of Tea," you need to hear "Butterfly," "Shelley Brown," "Black & White," "Funny Things," and "Find a Place." Find a Place is a true sleeper track, and I do think the instrumentation works well here. On this, the band seems to be reaching for something more epic that we might see fully developed on later releases. Time will tell where they go, but I hope that they continue putting out great songs about altered states of consciousness (think of Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on acid) and about antiheroes looking for a place to crash, or waiting for salvation from the postman. Shack's charm, and what few if any songwriters cannot capture, is a kind of fascination with the inconsequential.

All of Shack's releases contain a nod to the sixties; it's great when they drop obscure references to and emulate the heroes of that decade (The Byrds, Miles Davis, Love, and others).

Is this CD worth owning? Absolutely! However, if you don't own HMS Fable, Waterpistol, Here's Tom with the Weather, or The Magical World of the Strands, you'd better get your hands on those too when your shop for this one. The rest of the world hasn't yet discovered Shack, so their previous releases tend to go in and out of print, and won't you be sorry when you have to pay $30 for a release you could have gotten for far less.
