About the Artist
Jowe Head esquire - founder member of the late lamented SWELL MAPS, and also Dan Treacy's long-time partner in the TELEVISION PERSONALITIES has his first CD of solo material released by Overground Records.

Entitled ‘JOWE HEAD - UNHINGED' it features the man crooning ‘Istanbul Not Constantinople', (since recorded by They Might Be Giants) and ‘Frenzy' (originally a Screaming Jay Hawkins number).

The man's own tunes on this album include belters such as ‘Marzipan' and ‘Shoe-Horn', crooning smoothies like ‘Sudden Shower' and ‘Lolita', the fried beat poetry of ‘Shiny Black Shirt', and ambient weirdness like ‘Townshy' and ‘Crabs On Land'.

Three bonus live tracks are also included, recorded at a show in Hamburg 1990 with members of BINGO SALAD.

The CD is packaged in a wonderful full colour sleeve designed by Jowe.

5 out of 5 stars Top 3 album.......2001-11-10

I have worn out 2 cd players listening to this cd. This captures the late 80s musical scene, at the top of which was Paul Cebar. Musical syncretist and crypto-columnist, he and his band are like no other. Kind of a Dr. John of the North.

5 out of 5 stars deserves all success.......2000-05-18

In the late 1970's, Paul Cebar was a Wednesday-night Open Mic regular at the Blue River Cafe in Milwaukee. Summer, winter, rain or steam, Paul patiently climbed onto that stage night after night, year after year, and perfected his act. Not only did his singing & guitar playing mature and ripen, but his ability to absorb music from Louis Jordan to -- well, I can't put a top limit on Paul's dedication to listening and metabolising everything he hears, and searching out what he hasn't heard before.

In his case, practice has made perfect. He has transcended his teachers and the joy of making music is evident in his recordings.

He is unique in every way, a walking, breathing, and very kind man who knows more about the history of soul and rock than most of us will ever know. But the real deal is, PAUL CEBAR ROCKS! Check him out in person! Meanwhile, this was one of his first albums (perhaps the very first), when Robyn Pluer was still in the band. Every song is a kick.

Check out Paul's later CD's, too.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, upbeat, eclectic, excellent.......2000-04-19

Hard to categorize, Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeans are afantastic blend of rock, blues, latin beat, zydeco and soul that mightbe described as world beat. Excellent, outstanding album. Their later cds are similarly outstanding. If you ever have a chance to see this band live, do not miss it unless you would suffer health consequences from excessive toe-tapping. It's too bad this group doesn't have a more palatable name for the music industry or they would enjoy national success.

5 out of 5 stars In a category all its own.......1999-07-30

Paul Cebar is a unique singer/songwriter who plays music that you just HAVE to move to. I love everything I've heard from him. His band is terrific with a wide variety of instruments from saxophones to bongos. His tunes range from Cajun to Jazz, Motown to Rock 'n Roll to Salsa. Maybe the category he fits into is "Great Music"!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD with a lot of groove and soul........1999-07-30

Paul Cebar & The Milwaukeeans offer some of the most "feel good" and at the same time, intelligent, music out today. As this CD will demonstrate, their music is a combination of funk, rock and soul that will knock your socks off and keep you boppin' all night long. Although all of their CDs are fantastic, especially this earlier one, they must be experienced LIVE to be truly appreciated -- then you won't be able to get enough of them!

5 out of 5 stars The most superb CD I have EVER heard !!!.......2005-08-22

Latimer is without question, one of the world's greatest pianists. His jazz/free improvised playing is jaw-droppingly brilliant, as are his compositions, but when you consider he is responsible for the only (and will no doubt remain the only one EVER) LIVE CD of the excruciatingly difficult Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano, his genius is unquestionable. Recently picked up by Warner Classics (home of Barenboim et.al.,) their first release with him is, what it transpires also to be another first, the Reger Bach and Telemann variations and fugues. WHY THE HELL aren't these CDs available here ??? Anyways, see for yourselves with this one. The guy should be at Carnegie, the Village Vanguard, Symphony Hall and the Blue Note - it's not his fault he's British !!!

3 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz Ska.......2006-11-09

The sound on this record is Jamaican Ska. However, this album is to Jamaican music what Kenny G is too jazz. Do yourself a favor and get a Jazz Jamaica record. Or better yet, get the originators of the style. The Skatalites.

5 out of 5 stars just fun music!!.......2003-05-29

I bought this cd in jamaica! and wow I reallyenjoy this bouncy jamaican beat. (even though IM having trouble spelling it!) its a MUST BUY

5 out of 5 stars Great as expected.......2005-06-22

If you are familiar with the 2 other albums by this band (or the offshot group that included Hugh Hooper, 'Hughscore') then you know what to expect. Catchy but off-center tunes with a definitive flair for that canterbury 'thang'. This seattle band really knows what 'progressive' means. Highly recommended to fans of canterbury bands, Bowie, Amy Denio and Bjork.

4 out of 5 stars Too bloody short, but enjoy what's here!.......2001-09-26

A good, brief sampling of Roy's modern, somewhat minimalistic live show material (most of it is just Roy and his guitar, although his son Nick and others join him on a few tracks). I agree with another reviewer that his ramblings get a bit wearisome after a few listens. It would have made sense to separate the long monologues into distinct tracks, so that one could skip them with ease - but then I suppose we should be thankful this disc was released at all. This disc is especially essential to the non-UK crowd, since Roy tours outside the UK so rarely. His studio albums are superb, but to get the full Harper experience, you must hear his live renditions - ramblings and all. This disc will give you a good taste, at least.

3 out of 5 stars A good retrospective, but .............2000-02-16

If you are a fan of Roy then you'll like this. Any one who has herd him live in the 90s will be familliar with the format and the gutar playing by his son, nick, is exemplery (especially on Same Old Rock, where he has to compete with the awsome solo that Jimmy Page produced 25years prior). However, the record does not come up to par when compared with his two earlier releases, and for a really good listen to Live Roy I'd reccomend the sadly out of print "in between every line" which was recorded before Roy's voice went from tenor to baritone. It has also got to be said that Roy's extended ramblings, while amusing to here in a concert, don't go down to well after the upteenth listening of the record. All in all, there are better live recordinds of Roy but I still enjoyed this one. And lets face it, the man deserves more attention, even if its only for writing the line "I need that velvety silken down that runs between your thighs, in my lips and round my mouth to hold you in my inner eye."
