With the release of Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday, San Francisco's indie-rock darlings Creeper Lagoon take a large directional leap into the mainstream alternative realm of full harmonies and slick production. For their second full-length album, the band worked with four different producers (Jerry Harrison, Dave Fridmann, Greg Wells, and Mark Trombino) to add lush melodic textures and pack synthesized swirls and beats around their high-soaring tracks. As a result, Take Back the Universe is an energized burst of radio-friendly rock built on tenderly emotional songs that yield completely to the soft pop spot in Creeper's musical heart. Opening tracks "Chance of a Lifetime" and "Wrecking Ball" set the Take Back tone, boosting wistful lyrics about easy living and stumbling relationships with sparkling rock endorphins. Throughout the disc, melancholy sentiments build into robust choruses as the songs trip through co-vocalists Ian Sefchick and Sharky Laguana's musings on love and lighthearted affairs. With the release of Take Back the Universe, Creeper Lagoon show they have the ability to embrace their sensitive sides with the sweetness of old indie bands like Sugar without hydroplaning on an overly spit-shined final product. --Jennifer Maerz

3 out of 5 stars Under the Tracks rocks.......2007-02-01

The song "Under the Tracks" is a standout perfect pop song, from O.C movie. It's a very happy song, it would be a good choice for a Hollywood cigarette theme, if cigarette ad were allowed in Brazil.

The other songs are forgettable, but are some OK songs, like the slower "Here We Are" and "Cellophane" and the upbeat "Wrecking Ball".

Some reference in Internet are assigning "Under the Tracks" to Coldplay. No chances.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Indie Rock.......2006-01-22

I've always had a couple random songs by these guys on my computer (Wrecking Ball, Under the Tracks) and loved them. I decided to finally pick this disc up recently and am very glad I did. If you are into Indie Rock that doesn't feel too Indie, then you will enjoy this disc. The songs are catchy, but don't ever cross the line into cheesy radio-type rock crap. The vocals are solid and the musicianship tight. If you're into some good chill stuff I would give this disc a spin.

5 out of 5 stars This album shoulda been huge.......2004-06-30

On this album Creeper Lagoon unleashed a huge sound that more than fulfilled the promise of their debut. Big soaring guitars and catchy tunes that actually have something going on below the surface. I can't figure out why this wasn't all over the radio and didn't sell a million copies. Not that I wanted everybody running around in Creeper Lagoon shirts, but they deserved better. I know they're still around in a different form, but it just isn't like it was on this album. Ian (the ex-lead singers) new band On the Speakers is really good though, and if you miss what he added to the band check them out. They only have an ep out now, but it's got some great catchy stuff on it that's very reminiscent of Creeper. If you never heard this album, you need to get it. I've had it since it first came out and I still listen to it nearly every week, I just can't get sick of it.

4 out of 5 stars Try something new!.......2004-02-20

An unusual more sophisticated slant on punk rock. It's amazing some of the bands that make it to main stream, while ones with actual talent, like Creeper Lagoon, go largely unnoticed. Don't miss out on this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's ever released!.......2003-09-26

1/3 Guided By Voices + 1/3 Bob Mould + 1/6 U2 + 1/6 Fig Dish = Creeper Lagoon. Plain and simple, this is one of the greatest CDs ever created. If I were stranded on an island and could somehow only get my hands on one CD, this would be a strong contender for that CD. Not only is it one of the best CDs ever, it also contains "Wrecking Ball", one of the greatest songs ever written. If you have any love of indie pop rock, then I can promise you that you will fall in love with this CD from the first listen, and you will always be able to put it in without getting bored. GREAT!

    5 out of 5 stars Parallel Universe.......2006-08-31

Parallel Universe is generally considered to be the second-best drum 'n bass album ever recorded (the top spot goes to Goldie's Timeless LP, also released in 1995), most likely for two reasons. The first is due to its out-of-print status for most of its existence, having first been released on the late Reinforced Records and then reissued on the similarly ill-fated Crammed Discs label. Its absence during jungle's peak years (1994-1997) simply didn't allow enough people to hear it and gave ample opportunity for Goldie and Roni Size to blitz dancefloors worldwide.

The second reason has to do with the album's fey science-fiction theme, which is more Sylvia Browne than Orson Scott Card. Timeless had its sights set on the cosmos, but beneath the otherworldly atmosphere was the soul of hardcore jungle--a direction that Goldie would later fully embrace. Parallel Universe, by contrast, makes no bones about its mystic sci-fi inclinations or those inclinations' inability to jive with mainstream audiences. Where Goldie came off as a mad junglist trying his hand at prettiness, 4hero (the duo of Marc Clair and Dego MacFarlane) sound like kids raised on astrology and mysticism who one day stumbled upon jungle.

So it's no small wonder how natural their craft seems to come to them. Placed sonically between their early hardcore 7" singles ("Mr. Kirk's Nightmare") and their later overcooked fusion bombs (Creating Patterns, their latest LP), Parallel Universe seamlessly blends toughness and loveliness for an equally head-nodding and soul-searching musical trip. The intricacy of 4hero's breakbeats has thus far been unmatched by anyone in the field, period. The beats aren't especially fast, but what's speed anyway? You don't see Designs & Mistakes on any Top 10 lists, do you? Like Q-Tip and Phife Dawg's rhyming, the stress of the beats is on fluidity and interplay.

With the exception of the beautifully nocturnal "Universal Love," most of the tracks on Parallel Universe tend to be similar in structure. Usually five minutes in length, they begin with a soft, simple keyboard line or an oblique vocal sample before launching into dynamic, stuttering breakbeats. Then, about three minutes in, a beautiful pad synthesizer swoons and joins the breaks for a profoundly spiritual minute-and-a-half before disappearing and letting the drums take the song to the finish line. It's a formula, but oh, what a formula it is, and hearing the formula played out in different contexts gives one the sense of it's utter perfection--a bit like the human circulatory system. This makes Parallel Universe more focused and precise than Timeless, without the feeling that Dego and Marc are overexerting themselves.

Finally, 4hero understood what Jan Jelinek understood when he recorded Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records: subtlety is everything. With its syncopated chimes and slanted synth swabs, Parallel Universe winks at jazz without ever stating it explicitly. It's a modus operandi that 4hero apparently forgot when they recorded the slick, bloated Two Pages three years later and Creating Patterns after another three. On those albums, their new age inclinations became more burdensome than endearing, with a mess of stringed, brass and electronic instruments forming "jazz" in quotations that always threatened to implode in on itself. In a way, Parallel Universe serves to remind us of a purer time for drum 'n bass, before the jazz-fusion monster even became a valid issue. In a perfect world--nay, universe--where the stars are aligned and the nights are always crisp and sweet, Parallel Universe would be the single best drum 'n bass album ever to see the light of day.

    4 out of 5 stars recent convert.......2006-01-08

not being a heavy drum and bass listener myself, always leaning more towards downtempo and house beats, i was surprised by the listenability of this album. it's melodic but not too grandiose, approachable and hard hitting (as d&b should be.) a good well rounded drum and bass album, that i would highly recommend for avid fans of the genre and newcomers alike. track 6 is a personal fav.

5 out of 5 stars Homage to that which truly deserves it!.......2005-11-02

It has to be said that 4-Hero's "Parallel Universe" album from 1995 is a work of such extreme excellence that it boggles the mind. It can change the direction of ANY mood, convince even the most jaded music listener that there is musical life beyond what we normally hear and ultimately solidifies it's self on all who do hear it as a thing of pure perfection.

Tracks which I personally believe you must pay special attention to are:

    2. No Imitation
    4. Talk Around Town
    7. Terraforming
    9. Follow Your Heart (Part Two)
    10. Shadow Run
    12. Sounds From The Black Hole
    14. Solar Emissions

Mark Mac and Dego must have sold their souls for this one.

If you don't have it - F%@KING GET IT!

    I can't stress this enough.

Along with Goldies "TIMELESS" album this album by 4HERO is one of (if not THE) first albums to determine the new quality and direction for Drum and Bass. All the tracks on the album are very atmospheric. You can enjoy them both by lounging in your chair and by dancing to it. The songs vary from "hardcore, raw sounds to groovy, spacy structures. I am a great Drum and Bass enthousiast and I can say that this album is the one of the best albums that I have in my collection of over 300 albums. Even if you're not a Drum and bass enthousiast, you'll like this one. BUY IT.

4 out of 5 stars This is about fun and personal preference.......2005-05-18

Well, I know: All bad things written and said about MT are certainly true - and then again completely irrelevant. If you like MT, like I do, you will like UNIVERSE. It is fun and, yes, it has this certain MT-feeling in it, so many people love but cannot really define.

"TV makes the superstar" heavily leans on Max Martin's style - fine with me. It blends well with Dieter's composition and Thomas' voice. "Rockefeller" gets a "wow!" for its chorus, where Thomas surprises with head-on staccato vocals and a high pitch that hits the lyrics into your mind like a typewriter. Certainly, I do know the French song, where they got the sound-costume from - again, it goes well together with Modern Talking and I am sure all copyright issues have been settled amicably.
"Heart of an angel" would have been better off with acoustic sound and less electronics, but it has a very warm and forceful melody. One of their best ballads ever. Take "Mystery" if Latino-inspired sound kicks you, particularly the bridge of this song is catchy and smooth.
All other songs also make fine Modern Talking listening. Songs that did not convince me were Blackbird, Life is too short and Knocking on my door, to which I simply prefer the original "Uptown girl" by Billy Joel.
So, all you people in the knowing out there: Buy this stuff, and let the Rockefeller rock you wild!

3 out of 5 stars THE FINAL ALBUM.......2004-05-25

Dieter (the producer) didn't actually know it at the time but this was Modern Talking's last album. Since 2003 was the most successful year for Dieter Boheln as he had hits with Alexander's etc...

This album was no.1 on the day of its release but actually week position is no.2. There are some super tracks, but this album is the most average album of Modern Talking. The first 4 tracks are the most memorable and the rest really goes downhill except for the last track ' Superstar' which is brilliant. The most surprising thing in this album is that most MT albums after the first 2-3 tracks there is a ballad / slow song. This album goes on with super dance tracks one after another.

A super ballad 'HEART OF AN ANGEL' is one of MT's best. The best tracks are 1,2,3,4,5,9 and 12. Another surprise is 'BLACKBIRD' a soft Jazz track which is unusual for MT but there it is. A total of 3/5 isn't bad but not their best album but a dignified album to be their last. My personnel favorite album from the 80's is IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE and their FIRST ALBUM.

5 out of 5 stars Universe 2003 (the best MT album in the 21st century).......2004-02-23

      .

This album is the best MT album in the 21st century!
Catchy melodies, wonderful rhythms, and no boring ballads!

      My favourite songs are:
      03 Mystery [in latin style]
      08 Should I, Would I, Could I [euro-dance]
10 Life Is Too Short [catchy]
12 Superstar [yes, DIETER BOHLEN is]

      .

      1 out of 5 stars Horrid.......2003-07-30

I hope MT won't be remembered for this disaster of an album. Please, even if you're a long-time fan, do not buy this until you try it - it's garbage with only a couple of decent tracks (only one being in their traditional style: "everybody needs somebody").

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A MEGA - ALBUM ! Miss It and You'll Miss Out.......2003-06-12

Universe will definitely go down as one of the best albums produced and performed by Modern Talking ever (and that includes a comparison from their 1980's discography too). Let me offer my assesment of each song on this album individually. The opening track, TV Makes A Superstar, sounds an inspiration from Britney Spears - as this song will certainly capture the teenage market. I must say that Dieter Bohlen made use of a very clever tactic in making this song but the music followed is just too young for these two guys and in my honest opinion, there's really nothing special about this track and I've already started skipping it while listening to the CD. The video is pretty impressive though and should be one of the best made. The 2nd track, I'm No Rockerfeller is one of the best eurobeat songs written by Modern Talking and I find it a good nominee for the release of it as a 2nd single from this album. This song truly gives you an 80's music feel but it has'nt been produced on those kind of instruments. The song's theme is set in Paris and the Accordions in the background are really catchy. Track no.3, Mystery sounds like the track, No Face - No Name - No Number from their 9th Album - YEAR OF THE DRAGON, but trust me, this song is at least 5 times better and the theme seems to be a Spanish beach party. The 4th Track, Everybody Needs Somebody seems to be a song from their third album, Ready For Romance because this song is truly about eurodance and love, but again the instruments used are very modern. The next track, Hear Of An Angel, should be one of the best ballads of Modern Talking ever produced. What sets this song apart are the lyrics and the style of continuity. Track no.6, Who Will Be There IS HORRIBLE AND IM GOING TO RATE IT AS PURE TRASH! There's that particular sound or instrument which I've grown to hate and its predominant in this song. The next track, Knocking On My Door is defintely more happy - sounding and its a pure - party number! It sounds like Billy Joel's smash hit, Uptown Girl. Track no.8, Should I, Would I, Could I is a fast dance number which is typical europop. The chorus line is pretty catchy and musically it can grow into you. Track no.9, Blackbird, ahhh ....THIS IS THE MOST UNTYPICAL MODERN TALKING SONG EVER. I thought that Juliet from their 11th album, Victory was outlandish but THIS SONG IS IMPOSSIBLE. NO NO, THIS AINT A BAD SONG, BUT ITS VERY GOOD, NO MAKE THAT EXCELLENT! This song is PURE JAZZ, YES, JAZZ! and Modern Talking deserve full credit for getting it so right! When I first read this song's review, I WAS ACTUALLY WORRIED OF WHAT I WILL BE HEARING, BUT IM REALLY RELIEVED and I actually keep listening to this song over and over again and keep humming the lyrics - FULL MARKS GUYS, CONGRATS! The next track, Life Is Too Short, is the average Modern Talking song which seems to pop out every now and then from these two guys. It's a very 'pick me up' song which is probably present in every Modern Talking album. The theme and lyrics can be compared to earlier songs like, We Take The Chance, Anything Is Possible and probably even You Can Win If You Want - this song is decent stuff otherwise - no harm listening to it once in a while. Track no.11, Nothing But The Truth, was originally a book written by Dieter Bohlen last year in German. Thomas Anders sings beautifully on this song just like he used to in the 1980's. This song is again brilliant eurobeat and those heavenly background vocals and echos really turn you on. I have an intution that if a 2nd single is released from this album, then it has to be this one as it sounds very different and has a dash of finnesse which is probably lacking on the other songs of this mega - album. However, i don't think that there will be a single no.2 from this album because I've come to know that by this month's end, Modern Talking is releasing their 13th album succitintly titled, THE FINAL ALBUM which would include all their hit - singles from the 1980's until TV Makes A Superstar and some new singles (I HOPE!) Sad that Modern Talking has decided to end such a wonderful career but then, the age factor does come in, right ? WELL LETS NOT GET NOSTALGIC FROM NOW ON AS I HAVE ONE MORE SONG TO TELL YOU READERS AND FANS ABOUT, yes, the 12th and the closing track of this album, Superstar. Lyrically, this song is very similar to TV Makes A Superstar but musically, ITS MUCH BETTER, not to forget and ignore that this is a dance - floor smash ! A neat way to close and round - up such a brilliantly produced album which also has some neat artwork, making you think of the magnetic Modern Talking of the 1980's. THEY ARE EVERY EUROPOP FAN's SUPERSTARS, and even when they go after releasing their 13th and last album on 23rd June, 2003, Modern Talking will always hold a big reputation - in the music industry, and in our hearts as well! ALL THE BEST TO DIETER AND THOMAS for supplying us with such beautiful music. WE'LL SURELY MISS MODERN TALKING - at least I will, won't you all ? Bye
