If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12
I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.
Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30
I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.
No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01
I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.
Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18
Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

BEST CD I OWN!.......2007-05-13
This is by far my favorite Sarah Brightman Cd. Although it is probably her most pop oriented cd, it totally rocks! Most of the songs have a Middle Eastern Edge to them and are awesome to blast in the car! Make sure to try to get the version with either the bonus Dvd or the french tracks!
FIVE STARS!
not the best.......2007-04-12
I agree with "music fan" about this CD. Eden is a good album, and she's a good artist. But either this album was poorly produced or something, because this does not show her best. I wouldn't classify this as world music at all, because the instruments aren't used and it's more classical pop; if that's a genre. It seemed rambly to me with many of the songs sounding similar and lacking originality. I love her, she's unique in her genre. But she really shines as a classicist, with Classics, her work by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who she married) and operatic albums. This is what she's best at, so her collaborations on Eden and La Luna, which are classical in nature but still allowed her to branch out musically, turned out good. I have a lot of her albums, but I wouldn't buy this one. It's more something to listen to once. A few of the songs are good, the album isn't terrible, but it's not very good.
Excellent CD/DVD set.......2007-03-31
This is a very good CD/DVD set, beautiful music and performance.I enjoyed it.
Magical Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-24
Sarah's voice soars! I love her voice and I'm a new fan. ^^ I've heard her name lots of times before from people I know and when I received some of her CDs and videos as early Christmas present, I was in awe! She definitely has the voice of an angel.
Welcome to the Forbidden.......2006-06-10
"Harem" is probably one of Sarah Brightman's most unique albums to date. Rarely an artist can captivate the sounds of the far east and be able to mix them in well with a western feel. west meets east if you will. Its nearly impossible to pick out one favorite out of the 14 tracks on the album. You can't choose "Harem" over "The War Is Over" or "Arabian Nights". All the songs on the album are the best and do the album justice and fit perfectly in their own way, as the theme is quite clear: Middle-Eastern music with a hint of pop and some club sounds. And while the album could have ended at "Until the End of Time" (yet another beautiful song on the album), Brightman ends the album with "You Take My Breath Away" (originally from her album Fly). Personally, this track should have been only present on "Harem" and not on the album "Fly". An excellent way nonetheless of ending the album.
The DVD shows the making of the album, and the video Harem is also on the DVD along with an alternate version to the video. Its the first time i've ever seen a video from Sarah Brightman and i must say, i'm not disappointed at all.
I'm anxiously awaiting a new album. I'm a new fan of Brightman's and i love what i'm hearing from this album. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
The Lady...........2005-08-23
The debut of D.C. native, Nonchalant, has identified herself and her thoughts on the mainstream release, Until The Day. All with the exception of 3 of the thirteen were produced by newcomers B.L.A.K. Productions. Nonchalant lays out her feelings on "It's All Love", "Until The Day" and the spiritual "Thank You". She takes it to emcee / rappers with clean punches on "Crab Rappers". The down side to selling drugs was the subject on "5 O'Clock". Non explains what she's looking for in a man and relationships on the titles "Lookin' Good To Me" and "Mr. Good Stuff". The injustice system of the law for minorities on "Lights N' Sirens" was an experience that anyone could relate to. Nonchalant has a style all her own with clean fun and without negative connotations. You should "Have A Good Time" listening to this one in front of any age group.
Beautiful album!.......2004-03-28
Great rhythm, thought provoking lyrics...
It's more something you'd plug in while you're riding than dance to in the club.
She's Tight.......2001-11-05
Yes another tight album from an DC artist. Even though this came out when I was in the 10th grade, I knew that it was real hip-hop. I wish she would stop doing radio and start producing some of these local rappers (like myself) I know she can reconize talent just because of this album. As soon as U hear the beat from "5 o'clock" Ur head stays nodding throughout the song & "Until the Day" is real smooth and chill type.
Have A Good Time With Nonchalant.......2001-05-27
Nonchalant is one of the best singer in the Hip-Hop world and this album stands as a favorite. Her flow is catchy but not agressive, she's got a deep voice and her lyrics are wise. The entire album is good, from fun party tracks ("It's All Love) to darker ones ("Lookin' Good To Me", "Have A Good Time").The "Non Interlude" and the Outro are gorgeous. "Until The Day" is a must-have for any fan of impressive Hip-Hop (also check out the excellent"Take It There" featuring The Roots and Rampage available as a single).
I'd Jam on It Even Now...........2001-03-13
....the reviewer from D.C. is right. I liked "5 O'clock.." when it was out because of the take no prisoners beat with that slightly dischordant bassline and the "outside on the corner " hook. But "Until the Day" with the Stevie sample and "Crab Rappers" are good, too.

Sung Like This, They Should Stay Remembered.......2005-09-30
Commenting last June on CDs featuring the tenor, Kenny Baker, I wrote that his might be the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the 20th century. My comparison included a lot of fine tenors, but I hadn't heard John Aler. Recently, I have been listening to him as Jupiter in Handel's SEMELE, then as Nadir in Bizet's PEARL FISHERS, and more recently as the soloist for this album. Kenny Baker's voice is pure, limpid, naturally musical throughout his range. The lower part of Aler's range has less music, but the upper part is richer than Baker's, and the whole is tremendously exciting. Nowhere is his voice lovelier than in the first song on this CD, "I Hear You Calling Me." Composed circa 1903, overflowing with love and longing, it became the immensely popular signature-piece in the 1920s and '30s of the Irish tenor, John McCormack. (Who, with less primitive technology, might well have provided the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the century.)
I found some of the Aler collection quite familiar, others new and highly attractive (where have they been all my life?), and others that are lifted above the ordinary more by the singer's voice and art than by intrinsic merit. The songs are predominantly art or concert songs, composed mostly in the late 19th or early 20th century. Elegant, highly romantic, often ambitious, sometimes sentimental, popular in their time with lovers of semi-classical music, and often performed in concerts by leading singers of the day. Their lyrics include the poetry of Joyce Kilmer, Robert Herrick, Rabindranath Tagore, Shelley, Poe, Yeats, Eugene Field, and Sydney Lanier.
Did Aler get the idea for this CD from the fine baritone Thomas Hampson's CD, "An Old Song Resung"? Hampson's CD (unfortunately out of print), came out in 1990; Aler's, in 1995. The songs in both collections might well have been sung to similar audiences at similar concerts by similar singers. Still, the two CDs have only two works in common: - "Do Not Go, My Love," composed by Richard Hageman in 1917, and "When I Have Sung My Songs," by Ernest Charles in 1934. Both songs are superb, and both singers do them beautifully. I would give Aler a slight edge on the first; Hampson, on the second.

Highly recommended.

i'm from 7a's hometown and have roadied, travelled, and known everyone in this band (former members as well) for a while. they're my best friends. i love both 7a records too. they're both amazing. Timo's vocals in this release, are amazing. the pretty parts are perfect as well... but it's still a mosh record. having said all that, i still say DON'T EVER BUY THIS CD! go download it! the owner of the label, Sean Uprising, doesn't pay the former members a single cent in royalties!! that dude is why hardcore sucks now. don't ever support Uprising Records or buy any of their releases. download that shizz, cuz in this case, NONE OF THE BANDS ON THIS LABEL ARE PAID ANYWAY!!! that's a fact.

If you do not own this CD, go buy it now!.......2001-10-03
Not enough good words could do this cd justice. One of the best albums I own. There is an unlimited re-listening value. This album is fairly produced, but the amazingly written songs make up for the sub-par production. The backing vocal part additions really are stunning and part of the reason this album is way up at number 2 or 3 on my all time list. I wasn't a fan of emo music before this cd, but it opened up many new doors.
