5 out of 5 stars Make Me Dizzy, You Vertigo Queen........2004-06-28

I absolutely love the underrated album "Vertigo". I think it's a very clever, artistic album and is light years ahead from her certified-Gold 1997 debut album, "Growing, Pains", which I actually didn't much care for, save for a few songs like omnipresent "Kiss The Rain" and "Tell Me". That was more of a 4 star album, while this one is a 4½ (but I rounded up because it's been 4 years since it's release and it still gets rotation in my CD player). "Vertigo" seems to have been completely ignored by the masses and after listening to it, it's impossible to figure out why. If "Kiss the Rain" was able to be such a huge hit (and still a staple on karaoke night, from what I have seen), then how did this album -- at twice the maturity level and twice the creativity -- fall so far under the radar?

This one opens with "Am I Here Yet?", a thumping dance-rock song embedded with the irresistable sample of that old Hot Chocolate song, "I believe in miracles... where you from you sexy thang?". The song is very strong lyrically, "You wear a suit, I wear a smile. You yellow taxi the four-minute mile. I'll be your driver if you'll be my ride. Your financial advisor: me and my hitchhiker's guide". Very cute. It moves into an attempt at controversy, "Should I Call You Jesus?", which makes a lot of great points about individuals in the world who are so caught up in religion. "Don't you know Jehovah, he read the Kabbalah? Should I talk to Allah, doesn't really matter. God is God by any God-given name" Billie shows her opinion of the debate with a great uptempo rock pop song.

The rest of the album displays charisma to spare. "Flexible" which smartly incorporates the James Bond theme hook over a kicky uptempo number that discusses crossdressing "She's Marlena in a suit, walking the mermaid in thigh-high boots... I'm gay, I'm straight, I'm black and I'm white. I'll be anything you want me to be tonight". It would be very suitable for club remixing with interesting lyrics. Disappointing that it seems no one picked up on that one for club purposes. "Roll Over Beethoven" is a funky Latin-infused song that displays her sense of humor and opens with the line "Everyone says that I could do much better"... and you can't get much better than that. It's about someone who just thinks too highly of themselves, "You speak of Deepak Chopra and of course, world peace. A guru in the making down at Sesame Street". Ahh... getting humbled by Billie Myers.

The ballads work here, too, like "Without My Consent", which is actually more mid-tempo. It is a straight-out rock fringed song where Billie has been wronged again by someone who cannot commit, with good lyrical work again. "A hidden condom in a streetcar named desire... strangers still will think 'sure, just friends'". I especially like the last line "I don't have to like you to still be in love... oh no". You can so picture her eyes rolling on the "Oh no". But Billie shines much more when she brings up the tempo and offers a few choice, clever phrases. However, everything she tackles on this record comes up fantastic. Here's hoping she is able to nab a new record deal...

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly Provacative.......2003-10-12

I was hooked from the minute I first popped Billie's "Growing, Pains" CD into my stereo. I couldn't wait to get my hands on her second (and virtually unknown) album, "Vertigo" ... I had kept my standards low. I mean, after all, this album wasn't very popular. But now, my day is not complete unless I give this CD a listen.
We begin with the opening track, "Am I Here Yet? (Return To Sender)" with a catchy, poppy beat very different from her previous works. But the lyrics are extremely Billie-esque, ironical and clever. The second track, "Should I Call You Jesus?" is probably the most thought-provoking and brutally honest of all Billie's songs, looking at the world's religions and questioning each one. And in good tongue-in-cheek humor, Billie closes the track with a witty catch: "Jesus, come over here, have a beer!"
The title track "Vertigo" returns to the G,P feel, soft and poetic, and sorrowfully romantic. "A Room Full Of View" also has the same feel, starting out as a soft, whistful melody about a failed relationship, then as the chorus approaches, it belts out into a heavy rock tune, justifying the entire meaning of the song. "Where Romeo Never Dies" is my favorite piece on the album, returning to AIHY?'s catchy beat but with more rock flavor. The sound is uplifting and the lyrics are enchanting and clever. Then at the end, Billie declares "Satisfaction is the death of desire!," making us all question the true meaning of love.

Moving on, we come to "Roll Over Beethoven." I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but what we have here is a sort of Hispanic fiesta-ish song with lots of shouting and clapping in the background. But the lyrics are absolutely hilarious and extremely well put. Billie questions her partner, "What did I do to deserve you?" and tells of the 'Karma Boomerang' that will eventually crash into us one day. The next track, "Afraid of Spiders" carries on the Hispanic feel, but this time in a soft and haunting ballad, with an honest, desperate romantic feel to it. The closing track "Bitter Fruit (Dead Weight)" tells of the evil hopelessness of slavery with a haunting African feel and deeply poetic lyrics.

"Vertigo" is an extremely artistic album, at sometimes too artistic for all to appreciate. But if brutally honest and provacative is what you want, you've got it.

5 out of 5 stars She writes from the heart and soul.......2000-06-23

It has been three years since her last album, but the wait was well deserved. When I put the CD in and heard the first notes of the first song (AM I HERE YET?), I knew this album would be as great as GROWING PAINS. Billie writes about things we all can either relate to or have pondered some. AM I HERE YET? talks about wanting to know the future, but realizing that it can only be experienced by living. SHOULD I CALL YOU JESUS? hits right to the point ("If the planet Earth stopped revolving, would religion really matter anymore...") and goes on to point out that "God is God by any God-given name". FLEXIBLE deals with the immediate attraction and willing to be anything for the right moment. NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU CRY touches the heart and reminds us all to be careful with our display of emotions. And the rest of the tracks on this CD point and clarify the feelings and desires of the heart and soul. On top of the wonderful lyrics, and her Beautiful voice, the music takes these and transcends the mundaneness of a lot of the music that can be heard on radio and at the same time makes you feel like you have known these songs for a long time. All in all, this album is something that any music lover should have in their collection. And this album will definetly put Billie in the same realm as Stevie Nicks, Sarah McClachlan, and the long list of women musicians who can relate reality through words and music.

3 out of 5 stars Dizzying "Vertigo".......2000-06-10

Billie Myers pop-rock differentiated herself from the other La Lillith divas; "Kiss the Rain" was more in an '80s "Heart" vain and "Tell Me"-though more progressive with its Eastern influenced-rock- relied on an '80s gimmick as did its predecessor. She was clearly scoping out her own path with many diverse influences that would not more obviously shine through until the release of her second album, culminating in a more stately definition of her style.

The sultry singer suggested-though not credited even in the '97, '98 female-dominated market place where grunge had died and rock lost its direction- that Lillith women were not always either Jewel-strumming pseudo neo-folk artists, nor were they Paula Cole or Tori Amos pretentious; her album made a dent in the industry not the rumble it should have. These women were overplayed, and Myers subtle one-hit-wonder "Kiss the Rain"-though powerful-did not beckon music buyers to buy her album in droves; the airwaves were already saturated by the likes of the women mentioned, and Myers second arrestingly progressive single "Tell Me" fell on deaf ears.

Now that the novelty of "Where Have all the Cowboys Gone", and "I Don't Wanna Wait" has worn off, and Jewel's firm hold has diminished comes Myers with her second release-that if released in '98 along side the likes of Jewel or Paula-would have garnered her the attention she deserved, and hopefully still could.

For fans of that fleeting moment in time where Joan Osborne's novelty "One of Us" was popular, Billie offers "Should I Talk to Jesus" that relies on the same religious references-the Kaballah, Buddah, where Osborne used the saints, all the prophets-suggesting that as the sons of God we are all prophets a la Jesus manipulating religion to our own ends.Several songs in the book jacket-including "Should I Talk to Jesus" -include prose instead of lyrics to the featured songs that emphasize her points. Myers' depth reflects that she is less kitsch than Osborne in "One of Us"; where God was amidst us and a "slob like one of us", Billie suggests in her prose that "too many(men) wannabe martyrs" exploit religion and its icons and use it to justify wars. The George Harrison citars and the funkafied faded-finish suggests that this gimmick should have led the invasion of the US market as opposed to the misguided release of "Am I Here Yet?", which is more a "Life is a Highway" send-up.

A post-grunge anthem such as "Vertigo" evokes the "Every Rose has its Thorn" guitar-ish '80s vibe, but the chord progressions are more Zepplin than Poison- a clear indication of the original rock territory Billie has scoped out.

"Afraid of Spiders" rivals "Maria,Maria" for its insinuatingly hypnotic ethnic vibe; it is as if we have been transported to some Carribean or Eastern-African island where the tribes arrive on "Bitter Fruit (Dead Weight)". Both these songs-more the former than the latter-are smooth jazz/NAC easy listening staples in the making. Incidentally, fans of Sophie B. Hawkins' "Nocturne" from her "Timbre" set will get immersed in Billie's "spider web.

2 out of 5 stars Looking for the perfect remix of "Vertigo"? this ain't it...........2006-10-20

When the Jack Lee Knife mix of this song was charting Billboard's dance chart, I was so excited to obtain it, because a mix of New Order's "Waiting for the Siren's Call" brilliantly captured New Order's classic sound while bringing it up to modern electro house standards. Can't say the same for this mix of U2's best song in years. What you need to do is get the CD single for "Sometimes You Can't Make it On your Own," which has the Redanka remix of "vertigo" as a b-side, a powerhouse 7 minute anthem mix of the song.

5 out of 5 stars U2 ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-19

I JUST LOVE THIS SINGLE CD.THE COVER OF KRAFTWERK'S SONG (NEON LIGHTS) IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL.I JUST LOVE IT VERY MUCH.BONO'S VOICE IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL IN THIS SONG.OF COURSE THE VERTIGO SONG IT'S JUST PERFECT.

3 out of 5 stars Really only worth purchasing for one song.......2005-06-02

This CD is of interest mainly because of the Kratwerk cover, Neon Lights. It's a nice atmoshperic song, consisting of a single verse repeated a few times. A good B-side, though, and it's not available on The Complete U2 box set. The first track, Vertigo, is the same as the album version. The Jacknife Lee 10" Version is a good track, but it's only a shortened version of the 12" version, which IS available on The Complete U2 box set from iTunes. Compare the running times. The 10" version runs over 4 minutes while the 12" version clocks in at 5:36. If you must have every song that U2 has ever done, then buy this. If you are searching for good U2 B-sides, buy this. Otherwise, it may not be worth all the money.

4 out of 5 stars Decent single, but was overplayed........2005-03-02

I loved this song when it came it out back in November, but then the Radio got ahold of it, and it became overplayed. It is is a very good song, it has good lyrics by Bono, semi-great guitar-playing by The Edge, and a cool enterance into the song with the uno, dos, tres. I feel that U2 is one of the founding fathers of Rock/Alternitive, and they are still holding up today. I do not expect them to be in a retirement home anytime soon.

1 out of 5 stars U2's midlife crisis.......2005-02-14

By Greg Kot
Tribune music critic

It will be difficult to miss the presence of U2 Sunday night at the Grammy Awards. There will be Bono singing the Beatles' "Across the Universe" with an all-star cast, and the band cranking out a presumably live version of its thrice-nominated single "Vertigo."

It wasn't always so. A decade ago, U2 couldn't be bothered with the Grammys, or any other kind of promotional event that smacked of salesmanship. In 1993, U2 turned down an offer to perform at the Grammys, and the Edge and Bono didn't even bother to show up for the ceremony when "Achtung Baby" was nominated for album of the year (eventually losing out to Eric Clapton's "Unplugged"). The band didn't appear on television talk shows or Super Bowl halftimes to hype their albums, and they steered clear of corporate tie-ins, refusing to license their music for television commercials.

Now, U2 appears on "Saturday Night Live," shows up at the opening of former President Bill Clinton's library and rolls through Manhattan in a flatbed truck blasting a song, all in the name of promoting its latest album, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (Interscope).

Most incongruously, in the weeks before the album was released last November, U2 struck a deal with Apple to star in a commercial for the computer manufacturer's portable music player, the iPod. In addition, Apple released a special-edition iPod that enabled buyers to purchase (for $99.99, after cashing in a $50 coupon) the band's entire catalog, plus bonus tracks. The band, which once prided itself on creating an enigmatic visual presence, thanks primarily to the work of their collaborator Anton Corbijn, had suddenly become an advertising coup for one of the world's most visible corporations.

"Bono said for so long he wasn't going to let the corporate monster swallow him, but he's in the belly of the beast now," says one disappointed fan, Donna McClain, 34, a Los Angeles schoolteacher who has attended 83 U2 shows since 1983. "You watch the Super Bowl, and U2's music is playing. You turn on the TV, and they're an iPod ad. It wasn't what they stood for when they came out. It seemed like their music meant something, it had more heart behind it. Now it's just another product."

It's all about survival in a short-attention-span industry, says Jimmy Iovine, chairman of U2's label, Interscope Geffen A&M Records, and producer of some of the band's landmark '80s recordings. U2's members are in their 40s and the band has been in existence for 25 years, a veritable dinosaur that is about to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month. Yet the majority of the record-buying public is under age 25, most too young to remember U2 classics such as "The Joshua Tree" or "Achtung Baby." Like any band that hits rock 'n' roll middle age, U2 is grappling with the question of how to stay relevant in an industry that caters to youth.

"When we were kids, doing a TV ad, appearing on the Super Bowl halftime or singing at the Grammys would be a bad move for credibility, but not anymore," says Iovine, who adds that the band turned down three $20 million TV ad offers from other corporations before agreeing to the Apple deal because it "fit what they wanted to do aesthetically." He insists that the band received no money for the ad, which essentially served as a commercial for the new album while associating it with a "cool product that's a mainline right to a younger audience."

5 out of 5 stars The black and white swirl.........2007-05-18

Ah, the decidedly British Vertigo label, with the distinct black and white swirl on one label of the LP, and the track listings on the other side's label. Something we've lost in the one-sided CD age. And was also lost when their acts wound up recording for other labels here in the US.
Their paper label wasn't their only distinction; as the "experimental" subsidiary of Philips records, they also intentionally brought us delicious non-commercial music. Unintentionally failing to sell zillions of records in the process. They were hugely responsible for the promotion of progressive jazz a la Ian Carr's Nucleus, Ben, Jade Warrior and (yes) Manfred Mann. The MM boys weigh in with a dark Coltrane-esque "Travelling Lady" (see review of Manfred Mann Chaper III). They brought us marvellous adventurous rock a la Gracious, Doctor Z, Juicy Lucy, May Blitz and Clear Blue Sky. And a stand-up version of "MacArthur Park" by Beggar's Opera, turning this pop classic into something the progressive age could absorb. And, as you see, they brought Rod Stewart to us as a solo act with the splendid "Handbags and Gladrags," written by a young Mike D'Abo with a maturity that made the song an instant standard.
As with all comps, there are a few things on here I can't quite see, for example, I think a better tune by Patto (successor band to the great great Timebox) could have been chosen. But all in all this is very nice, even if you might have to listen a couple of times to really get into it. A deserved celebration of a seminal label of the period.

4 out of 5 stars Pudo ser mejor.......2006-02-28

5 out of 5 stars A Real Audio Trip Thru Time.......2005-10-07

The Vertigo Records label emerged at a time when rock was shaking off the "Sgt. Pepper" mindtrip of psychedelia to concentrate on heavy metal, progressive rock and fusion jazz. From 1969 to 1974, Vertigo's varied and truly experimental roster included Black Sabbath, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Vangelis (and Aphrodite's Child, the group Vangelis was in prior to going it as a solo artist), Gentle Giant and Status Quo. Those were the big names. But the label was also home to genuinely obscure acts who only ever recorded 1 or 2 albums for the label: Freedom, Tudor Lodge, Affinity, Atlantis, Cressida, Ramases. Each Vertigo album of the era boasted the distinctive "swirl" logo that occupied the A-side of every album label (the B-side contained song listings and timings). Also, every album boasted impressive artwork that sometimes spilled over into elaborate die cut designs or as two-panel gatefold artwork. TIME MACHINE is a veritable capsule of the era. A three CD set which boasts crisp, clear and clean remastered sound, a lovingly crafted and highly detailed 48 page booklet and a veritable bounty of music from a wide variety of instant appeal to seventies rock fans (ie. those who can tell the difference between Gentle Giant and Status Quo). The tracks that inspire the most awe are "Spiral Architect" from Sabbath (you can hear strummed acoustic guitars and passionate string sections at work while Ozzy turns in a lucid and heartfelt vocal!), "The Kettle" from Colosseum (a surprisingly heavy mix of hard rock and fusion progressive jazz), "Lord Of The Ages" by Magna Carta (which is recommended to each and every Moody Blues fan in existence) and "Midnight Moses" by SAHB (are you an AC/DC fan? Check out Alex Harvey's early Sensational Band sides, you won't be disappointed). Some of the songs are, admittedly, a little challenging (ie. selections from Gracious!, Manfred Mann's Chapter Three and Bob Downes). Yet at the end of it all, you'll feel a certain sense of awe at the music of an era that too often, has been denigrated or ridiculed as being "heavy hippie horsesh*t"). A vital collection that rightfully takes its place next to other classic compilations like "Nuggets", "Atlantic Gold" or "Freakbeat Scene".

1 out of 5 stars Vertigo - 2 songs at full CD price - ripoff.......2007-03-08

I was expecting a great CD. What I got was 2 songs at more than what a regular 12 song CD would have cost me. There was definately false advertising with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Who mastered this?.......2007-01-30

Great rocking tunes - musically. There is no digital headroom though with the mix - its pegged to the max. The songs are extremely compressed to the point of distortion even at low volume. It sounds like someone deaf mastered these songs. Even the vocals are distorted. Maybe that's how they wanted it, but this seems to be the growing trend with all digital music - to see how much headroom can be squeezed out of digital levels to the point of low level distortion. Bottom line - the songs rock, but the audiophile in me says they sound like c-r-a-p. It would have sounded better having the band play in a garage and putting up 2 cheap microphones to capture the moment instead of wasting money on a deaf engineer :)

5 out of 5 stars FED UP WITH "FED UP".......2006-03-26

U2 had nothing to do with denying Mariah the Grammy for Album of the Year. The listeners/fans/other musicians elevated their newest album to that great height. Just because an album might sell the most in one year does not mean it is the best of that year. Don't get so irritated and angry about who wins what. Relax & Enjoy the music!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGLES OF ALL TIME.......2006-02-12

I was so happy to learn that U2 won so many grammys including the album of the year.U2 are a great band who richly deserved all their awards and the academy was right in honouring them. This is a great song AND I REPEAT THAT PLEASE BUY THIS SINGLE OR BUY THEIR ENTIRE ALBUM HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB.Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Original and Creative.......2005-09-22

One reviewer said the guitar riff sounds like a Hanson song, so I checked it out. No, it doesn't sound similar to me. Anyway, I have never heard anything like Vertigo before, it is probably U2's best and is incredibly original (with an awesome video). This track comes from a truly great album, How To Dismanlt An Atomic Bomb. It is definately worth your money.
