Customer Reviews:
Chamber Rock -- not for the faint of heart!`.......2003-01-13
Alles Wie Gross is a quirky quintet of talented musicians hailing from Munich, Germany. The band's style is of the unique genre one might call "Chamber Rock" -- it involves frenzied strings (violin & cello) and piano, squawky woodwinds, and the traditional rock setup of electric guitar and bass, all brilliantly intertwining in repeating loops over a sturdy base of thundering percussion. "Vertonung" is their debut release -- the wholly instrumental songs contained therein were originally intended to serve as a belated soundtrack to the 1920 Sven Gade silent film version of "Hamlet." But you, the lucky listener, can now feast your own ears on this sensational musical smorgasbord!
The album takes some getting used to, as it is an unusual and complicated sound. However, it will grow on you in no time. Before you know it, you'll find yourself unwittingly creeping around your house in a style befitting a tragic hero.
The songs feature haunting melodies that compete for the listener's attention and then wax into a cacophony of sounds, only to join up again in a symphonic rock-n-roll finale. There are lots of looped phrases, syncopated rhythms, and suspenseful buildups (my favourite). Though the composition is loosely structured and the melodies complicated, this is by no means an album that only free jazz fiends can relate to. Any music lover will be able to appreciate the sounds of Alles Wie Gross.
