The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite recordings ever.......2007-06-08

Elly Ameling is in glorious voice, and Demus's instrument here is fortepiano, which suits the music exquisitely. Der Hirt auf dem Felsen alone is worth the price, but all the Schubert and Schumann songs are well chosen. I'm so happy that this 1965 performance is available on CD.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-03-21

I also owned this on vinyl and have wonderful memories of this perfect blend of voice, clarinet and piano. Truly haunting melodies and the greatest musical integrity. Can't wait to get this one next month!

5 out of 5 stars Truthful & Sincere Singing.......2006-11-25

Ameling's reading of Schumann and Schubert Lieder is sincere and noble, at times even awe-inspiring. There's always something genuinely beautiful, a sense of respect for music itself, when she sings with her etherial yet warm voice.

The sublimity of "Mein schonster Stern" only makes this CD worth purchasing. Her Schumann recordings are so scarce now that it is joy to find 19 Schumann Lieder both well known and obscure gems on this disc. Accompanied by an original master piano of Schubert's days. Recorded in 1965/67.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-11-11

What a gorgeous voice! It's a true delight to listen to this set.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a pretty voice ..........2006-09-17

It is tempting to dismiss Ameling as a "pretty voice" and reach for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf instead, as a previous reviewer suggests. Ameling's interpretations place a premium on simplicity and directness - two traits that are often undervalued. To my ears, however, Ameling's self-effacing approach is ideally suited to lieder performance. Schwarzkopf's recording with Edwin Fischer on EMI, while admirable in its own way, is too fussy for my tastes. Take, for example, the rendition of "Im Fruehling" by each singer: where others find Schwarzkopf to be intense and dramatic, I find her to be mannered and melodramatic. Ameling's version strikes closer to the heart and shows greater insight and intellect, in my view. Note: on this CD, Ameling's ravishing voice is at its peak.

Hilary Hahn is certainly one of the best young violinists before the public. Now 23 years old, she has abundantly fulfilled her early promise as a radiantly talented as well as singularly earnest prodigy, and grown into a brilliant violinist and a communicative, arresting performer. On this recording, which features Bach's Violin Concertos in A minor, BWV 1041 and E major, BWV 1042, as well as the Concerto for two violins in D minor, BWV 1043 and the Concerto for violin and oboe in C minor, BWV 1060, her flawless technique and strikingly beautiful, intensely focussed tone are on full display. There is a noble, restrained quality in her playing, so that although her tone-production and vibrato are "modern," her sound has a classical, pristine purity. (By contrast, the orchestral sound, though good, is surprisingly lush - a rather odd discrepancy.) Hahn's interplay with her two excellent partners is close and unanimous in tone and style; the less familiar Concerto for violin and oboe is especially compelling. Unfortunately, Hilary Hahn, despite her serious, thoughtful approach to music, seems to have succumbed to the current trend among today's performers--perhaps symptomatic of the jet-age--to play as fast as their fingers will carry them. The fast movements are taken at such speeds that they lose all their elegance, grace and charm, become prone to false accents, and sound aggressive, hectic and breathless. A performer with less musical integrity might be suspected of just wanting to show off her effortless facility. However, Hahn's musicality, expressiveness and affinity for Bach (she has also recorded the unaccompanied solo violin works on Sony) come through in the slow movements, where the playing is calm, expansive enough for carefully shaped phrases, emotionally concentrated, and simply beautiful. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Angelic. .......2007-04-30

When Hilary picks up her bow, the Angels fall silent and listen.

I don't know a whole lot about music, but I do know pure beauty when I hear it, and I own 5 of this delightful young ladies CDs, and this is simply the most beautifal. If you have any taste for classical music, and my collection runs from Guns an Rose to Beethoven, you will love this album. :) Brightest Blessings Hilary, BB.

3 out of 5 stars Will You Hurry Up Already?.......2007-04-26

Like other reviewers, I agree this is way to fast. It's as if, she is just trying to get through these pieces as fast as she can. Like it's like hurry up this is boring, as if she would rather be doing something else. I know that's not what she intended, but to my ears that's what it sounds like. This is the 4th Hilary Hahn CD, that I have purchased. I've liked most of her CD's, but as a result of this recording am beginning to doubt her interpretation of many of these pieces. Like many other reviewers I am not an expert by any means, but I am thinking that being as young as she is affects her interpretation of the music. Maybe I will change my mind later, and maybe I am just used to hearing Bach a certain way who knows? To sum up my feelings, I will say she is an amazing violinist with huge potential, but like any fine wine needs time to mature. Time will tell for me, and maybe for her as well, but for now 3 stars is my verdict.

5 out of 5 stars Addicted .......2007-01-24

I don't really know a whole lot about classical music but I came across Miss Hahn's music when I was searching for something to study by. Personally, I find her music addictive and I never get sick of listening to her. I have since experimented with the notion of why I like her so much by comparing her music with other interpretations of the same pieces from Bach and have really come to appreciate her style. Clean, crisp and fresh. A really, really, wonderful violinist!

2 out of 5 stars No groove.......2007-01-20

Some of the other reviewers on this site have made the same comment: that this is too fast. However, the negative reviewers all either sounded like idiots or like snobs with lines like "she misses the poetry of the music". I don't listen to Bach for poetry (what does that even mean?). Bach has groove, and I listen to Bach cause he's got the Groove. And so I thought I'd like it peppy. I usually do. For example, I like Glenn Gould's early recording of the Goldberg Variations, which has also been criticized for being too fast.

But, I didn't like this. At all. I'm not sure if the root of the problem is that it's too fast, but the result is that it's definitely not musical. No groove at all. Even if you liked Hahn's solo Bach, skip this recording. It's really not worth it, even at $9.99. (If you're wondering, one star is for good pitch, and the other is for the slow movement of the Concerto for 2 violins.)

If you want a good recording of the same music, get the 2006 recording of Akiko Suwanai and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. It's got groove and beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Too fast? - let your own ears decide........2006-11-11

I don't mean to purposely stand in contradiction against other reviews; I just felt it was unfair for me to be almost robbed of the musical enjoyment I am having now with this recording, and I want to present another view.

I remember being really inspired when I first saw a video of Hilary Hahn playing the Bach Concerto. However, I was surprised to see so many criticisms regarding the tempo when I went to check out the CD here on amazon.com.

It made me really hesitant about buying the CD. But I found out that it proved to be a mistake for me to be held back into buying this CD because of these criticisms.

I am not a student of classical music nor do I consider myself to be an expert on music criticism; so I do not really know if there is such a thing as a "wrong" tempo in classical music.

Hilary Hahn has written in the linear notes regarding how she wanted this piece to be lively and to inspire others to dance to the fast movements. This reflects her personality and I think she has succeeded in achieving that vision. As far as her own musical vision is concerned, I don't think anyone can say she missed it or contradicted herself.

I own this CD for some time now and I have been listening to it enough to say that the tempo is not an issue for me. I think Hilary pulled it off nicely. I have gone out to listen to other interpretations, but I eventually found Hilary Hahn's and Oistrakh's interpretations to be my favorites. (Grumiaux's interpretation also comes close - do check it out!) The tone and execution really shines - Everything fits together beautifully like a well-crafted piece of furniture. There is evidence of tremendous thought into the phrasing, but when you are listening to the music, all that disappears, you just know Hilary really enjoyed herself while playing this piece. It is inspiring.

I am not discrediting the other reviews and the opinions of others - they have a valid opinion and they are entitled to it. All I'm saying is this: do listen to it before you buy this CD and make a judgment for yourself. Do not rob yourself of the joy of enjoying music that YOU like.

Album Description

On their second full-length, Two Gallants weave urgent back-alley storytelling with no-frills instrumentation that alternately boils with visceral fervor and mourns with plaintive restraint. The youthful duo play a strain of rock that falls somewhere between folk, punk, and old-time blues and the resulting sound is much more than the sum of its parts. Two Gallants draw on Old West images and themes of revenge, redemption, and shifty morality to create wide-swinging moods trafficking in brash ferocity, repentant regret, and freewheelin' Americana. The double LP version includes two bonus tracks from the band's early recordings.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great album for drinkin cold Tecates in the hot sun.......2007-07-03

This CD is just amazing. One of those few genre mixing albums that make it more than the sum of the parts.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I've bought in a long time.......2006-12-26

This album is outstanding. It's rough around the edges, but mixed much better than The Throes. And the coarse sound is what makes it so great.

5 out of 5 stars Sensitive, poetic cowboys... I'm not sure but is that an oxymoron?.......2006-08-31

After a few listens, I would say that Two Gallants are sensitive and poetic cowboys. It may sound like an oxymoron but remember how well Brokeback Mountain did at the box office. But besides that, this record by Two Gallants is excellent in its raw and simplistic power. While other audiophiles might cringe at 'simplistic,' I like to embrace it. This band is a guitar player and a drummer, both very well versed in their respective instruments. Lyrics that cut to the bone float over folky guitar riffs and atypical yet extremely rhthymic drum patterns. Two Gallants has certainly distinguished themselves from the crowd with this record. I highly recommend this record; hear a new spin on alt-country (if one could even identify a root genre from which Two Gallants has sprung).

4 out of 5 stars Usually I don't bother with the review thing..........2006-07-03

Where to start? Gritty and rough for sure. Sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a Steinbeck novel the story telling in the songs is that vivid. I too was a little suprised at the use of the "N" word but who uses it and how it is used is much much more important (not that this is the difinitive forum for such a topic).

More than anything the tight/sloppy playing speaks to me and pretty much defines the vast majority of the music I listen to (Eno, Big Star, Mats, etc). If you took Mark Arm from Mudhoney and put him in front of No Depression Uncle Tupelo then you would have Two Gallants.

As for the 4 star rating lets be realistic everyone thinks the cd's they buy are five stars or they wouldn't buy them and 5 stars is overused on amazon anyway. This is a fine effort and certainly worth owning but it falls into the "nice to have" vs "essential" category.

5 out of 5 stars Buy now!.......2006-05-17

I'm not one for writing reviews, especially technical ones, cause sometimes a great album is just a great album. The thing is this album is one of the best of 2006 so far. I usually hate long drawn out songs...sorry I was raised on a study diet of punk rock...27 years of listening and i still like my songs 3 minutes. Ok...back to the two gallants...these songs are like a great book you don't want to end. So get up off the couch, turn off the tv and buy/steal/borrow this cd.

5 out of 5 stars I got it for the same reason...........2006-03-07

as many of the others...because that one song that echoed over the courtyard of Shawshank Prison grabbed me. So, I looked in the credits and discovered this. OK, so it's just the highlights, but it's an AMAZING album from start to finish. Presented with passion, humanity, and sometimes even humor. Sometimes opera will drive me up the wall when I don't like one of the singer's voices, but this one has a wonderful collection of talent, and is very easy to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the full-length version?.......2003-05-03

I have both the highlights and the full recording of this version of Figaro. For some reason, though, Amazon doesn't seem to carry the full version, which is too bad. This is one of the few operas I actually think needs the recitiatives.
Anyway, so since the acting doesn't matter too much on a highlights version I won't get into that. The singing is very good, in fact I think it's probably the best version of Figaro out there. The only exception is in regards to Gundula Janowitz's performance of Dove Sono, which seems to be very ill-suited to her voice. The rest of her part is done beautifully. I also think it's sad that Marcellina's aria was left off, since that is always one of my favorite songs and I will never intentionally buy a recording where it has not been included, but due to how frequently it gets cut, I am not surprised.
Anyway, I recommend the highlights version if you are after something you can listen to in the car and don't want to bother with a full three disc set. For all other purposes I would advise you to track down the full-length recording, which is definitely worth it.

This recording is fantastic. Bohm is a lively, exciting conductor who can also make one wet-eyed in the final scene. Prey has the perfect blend of mischievousness and richness of sound for Figaro's character, and he is well-matched by Edith Mathis as Susanna who is delightful and full-voiced. Gundola Janowitz as the Countess is also amazing, and her "Dove sono" is really moving. Fischer-Dieskau is a powerful Count, too. Troyanos (Cherubino) is beyond praise and her "Voi che sapete" ranks with Frederica von Stade. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the selections are good, though I wish the sextet "Riconosci in questo amplesso" was included. In all, great!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great opera.......2001-08-18

The Marriage of Figaro is arguably one of the best operas ever developed, and it's great to know that this cd contains the best songs from the fabulous opera. The orchestra, along with the singers, give a grand performance of high caliber. If you enjoy classical music, then this will make a magnificent addition to your musical collection.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2000-12-30

After watching Shawshank Redemption I looked everwhere for this recording. This is some of the most emotionaly moving pieces of music I have ever heard. Im a 17 year old guy in a punk rock band, and I cried probably the hardest Ive ever cried in my life when listening to the duettino sull aria. Its one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my entire life. I cant imagine not having it.

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-02-17

In my opinion this is the most solid disc of Lieder I have heard. The music and the performance are great. I would definitely go for this if your new to Lieder and want to get your feet wet. And maybe next you'll want to try Brahms' Deutche Volkslieder, which I think takes a little more effort to get into, but is great none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Epitome of Lieder singing.......2006-07-26

It really amazed me to learn from the booklet that Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was never totally confident in taking on the songs of Schubert, mostly due to the fact that a lot of them are simply based on poems with a man being the character. With her wonderful tone, fastidious attention to detail and the true German spirit, she would have been able to perform them much more extensively. Whatever the case, the 24 songs featured on this disc are a true delight from start to finish. The CD starts with the joyful atmosphere of the songs "Die Vogel" and "Liebhaber in allen Gestalten " which obviously were recorded very early on in Schwarzkopf's career, showcasing her in carefree, simple and amazingly fresh mood. Then comes the core of the CD-the classic recital with Edwin Fischer at the piano. Nothing really needs to be said here. Schwarzkopf shines throughout with beautiful tone, flawless diction. She may be mannered, yes, but she also does justice to the poetry like I never heard from anyone before, of course with the exception of Fischer-Dieskau. Edwin Fischer plays with taste, bringing out all the demanded atmosphere: from the serenity of Im Fruhling to the intensity of Die Junge Nonne. The sound is pretty old but the balance is perfect and both Schwarzkopf and Fischer are caught in a great day. The other items on the disc are recorded later on in Schwarzkopf's career, when her tone has darkened, thinned down a bit but always radiant and the fastidiousness and artistry even more significant; and Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons are delightful pianists. The remaining songs include a high-spirited Die Forelle and Seligkeit, a wonderfully introspective Der Einsame and a moving and gorgeous An mein klavier (although she seems to miss a breath for a tiny fraction of a second at the beginning of the 2nd verse). The final "Erlkonig", one of her most favorite recordings, is a track that will knock you off your seat with its intensity. Parsons's playing is adequately intense, and Schwarzkopf's "mannerisms" which the Schwarzkopf bashers love to hate, are deadly powerful in pointing out all the 4 characters of the demanding lied. Be warned, the cry of "gewalt" by the end of the lied will cause your heart to miss one beat! Sound recording gets better throughout the CD, from acceptable mono of the first 2 songs to the crystal-clear stereo of the final items.
Highly recommended. Masterful singing from the queen of German lieder.

Although i do not understand each word it sings, i m just happy to hear it till the last song finishes. I feel content.

Amazon.com essential recording

Despite his disdain for some of the sillier aspects of grand opera, H.L. Mencken once said that Die Meistersinger was the greatest single work of art in Western civilization--and, to many, his hyperbole is forgivable when one contemplates the well-crafted structure of this most human of Wagner's music dramas. Of all recordings of his sole comedy, this one under the baton of Karajan in his prime has perhaps the best-balanced cast. The clear, youthful tones of Donath in the role of Eva must be close to Wagner's ideal for the role, while Adam makes a compassionate Sachs--though not quite as resonant as one would wish. Kollo's impetuous style is appropriate to the character of the love-struck Walther. The orchestral playing has the clarity and transparency that is the trademark of the Karajan approach, perhaps most appropriate in this, Wagner's happiest work. --Christian C. Rix

5 out of 5 stars excellent recording.......2007-01-10

"I tried very hard to like Solti latter version or even Barenboim's but this recording never fails to leave me overwhelm by Wagner genius."

5 out of 5 stars Another superb Wagner Opera!.......2006-08-14

I am relatively new to opera, however I am finding myself strongly drawn to the operas of Richard Wagner, not to mention his fantastic overtures and preludes to his operas! I think, I have ordered every opera that Wagner wrote as well as numerous cds on his opera overtures, etc. "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" conducted by the great von Karajan! Right now I am listening to "Siegfried" conducted by Solti and the Vienna Philharmoniker. Unbelievable!!
Peter, Richmond, BC, Canada

3 out of 5 stars Great for Karajan and the orchestra, but.........2005-09-05

...the Hans Sachs of Theo Adam is so gritty and dry, so lacking in every human quality this great chatacter should have, that I lament every time I put this Mesitersinger on. Kollo is no great shakes as Walther, either, with his absence of legato, total lack of poetry, and general charmlessness. Donath is wonderful Eva, the minor roles are fine, and Karajan's conducting is miles ahead of competitors like Jochum on DG and Solti on Decca.

All in all, desite the bawling Walther of Hans Hopf in the live Bayreuth performance from the early Fifties conducted by Karajan on EMI, I prefer that reading over this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but could certainly be better.......2005-07-30

This is very difficult to review. First, I should say this is a totally satisfactory recording. All of the basic elements of the score (the joy, nobility, pathos and humor) are here in abundance, and it is beautifully performed (by the wonderfully enthusiastic players from Dresden, aided by Donath's lovely Eva and Ridderbusch's amazingly good Pogner) and recorded. However, this Meistersinger always seems restrained, as if Karajan was afraid of being too emotionally connected to the score. Also some of the singing leaves something to be desired. In particular, Theo Adam as Sachs is, for me, totally unimpressive. To me, Sachs is not just a cobbler with musical talent, he is the moral center of this work, one of the wisest characters created for the stage. What makes him especially impressive for me is that Sachs is wise not because he has spent his life in an armchair thinking about philosophical problems, but because he has seen all of life, and is humble enough to see the world as it is. Almost as disturbing, Evans just creates a caricature of Beckmesser. Certainly this is a very common interpretation of the role and is a very safe one, but I really don't see where this comes from. Of course Beckmesser is the essence of a pedant, and a pretty nasty one at that, but he is a human being, not a monster. As I see it, Beckmesser is stuck on the rules of the past because he thinks they are really important in preserving the tradition of the Meistersingers, not because he has some weird hang-up on textbooks. Also, who could doubt that he really has feelings for Eva? Unfortunately, Evans just takes the humanity out of the role by playing him as a prototype for Mime. I realize he was playing it for laughs, but trying to be funny is the surest way of not getting a laugh. The best comedy is when you can't quite decide whether you should laugh because of the absurdity of the situation, or cry because it's so pathetic. To me, Evans' Beckmesser is the clearest example that this recording doesn't really delve into the essence of the work. As in the Ring and Parsifal, Wagner is imagining the youth redeeming their elders who are too conflicted to resolve their issues. Unlike those dramas, Die Meistersinger has the redemption taking place through continuation and rejuvenation of tradition, rather than through renouncing desire. Seen from this perspective, the work is much more serious and philosophically important than when it is seen as a simple comedy, but it is also more joyous, since the triumph comes from the depths of the soul, rather than from a eat, drink, and be merry kind of attitude. Again, none of this subtlety is to be found here.

5 out of 5 stars DEUTSCH UND WAHR...DEUTSCH UND ECHT.......2004-09-02

The Mastersingers is a tribute to popular German art. Folk-art of this kind was probably a romantic illusion of Wagner's own, but he took seriously the idea that each culture should be true to itself, and one reason behind the particular vocal style he adopted in his music-dramas (The Rhinegold and later) was that performances outwith Germany should be able to give them in their own language, something not so easy to achieve with traditional operatic arias. Whether any of this made Wagner the socialist that Shaw liked to think he was I very much doubt. It also seems to me that attempts to find proto-nazism in Die Meistersinger are not only stuff, but also nonsense. It is quite true that towards the end of the work Sachs voices fears for the survival of the German identity, but so far as it goes I can see nothing at all wrong with that. Insofar as the musical tradition was concerned, it was by no means limited to Wagner in any case. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn were thoroughly imbued in their musical idiom with the influence of Italy, but the music of Schumann and Brahms is as completely, consciously and exclusively German as Wagner's own, and as Bach's had been a century and a half earlier.

The Mastersingers is a 'comedy', in something like the sense that that term applies in Shakespeare. It is not rolling-in-the-aisles stuff, and its basic message is deeply thoughtful and serious. There are actually a couple of incidents that I personally find rather amusing. One is the interminable list of rules for composition, and the other is Sachs's explanation to Beckmesser of why the latter's shoes have rather thin soles. Typically, Wagner is at pains to point out his own jokes in case we missed them. The pillorying of Beckmesser, usually identified with the eminent Vienna critic Eduard Hanslick, may be funny to some. It is certainly rather clever. Wagner neatly puts into Beckmesser's mouth some of the tin-eared rubbish that Hanslick had turned out by way of criticism of himself, although without any of Hanslick's wit and turn of phrase which must have been what really wounded Wagner. Where Wagner seems to me to take a really breathtaking risk is in writing a drama round the theme of awarding a prize to a tune of his own composition. It is very hard indeed even to imagine Handel, Mozart or Verdi or anyone else with a more developed sense of humour than Wagner walking into a trap like that. I am reacquainting myself with The Mastersingers after many years, and when young I was inclined to think that I would have withheld the prize in the competition. Wagner's tune bears a faint resemblance to one by Brahms in his 'Mastersingers' violin sonata, and I still think it suffers a little from the comparison. Whether time has mellowed my opinion or just because Wagner gives us the tune quite so often, I think better of it now, and if the resemblance is not coincidence it can only be a deliberate tribute by Brahms, bursting with melodic inspiration himself, to his great polar opposite.

The Mastersingers is described in this set as an opera. I suppose it is, in one sense, but it is still a music-drama first and foremost. Goetterdaemmerung is a bit of an opera too, but not for the best of reasons as here, more of a partial relapse into the unreformed early style of Tannhaeuser. As one expects, Karajan is completely in charge of what he is doing, and there is never a hint of a stylistic lapse, not even, in my view, the way Evans handles the part of Beckmesser. There is a touch of Mime about it, but this is a work dominated by baritone voices, and the differentiation is welcome to my ears. In general, I'm inclined to argue in support of all the male casting. I go a bundle on the voice of Rene Kollo, and have done since I first heard him in the marvellous Brahms Rinaldo that he did with Sinopoli (now there is a work that gives a fascinating glimpse into another direction that German opera might have taken if the composer had found the libretto he was purportedly searching for), and when Kollo sings 'Parnass und Paradies' it was all I could do to concentrate on what I was listening to as Brahms's celestial cadence at 'Paradiese noch einmal', sung by the same voice, came into my head. I like Theo Adam as Sachs, just as I like him as Wotan. I grew up thinking of Hotter as the type of the Wagnerian bass, but Sachs is a modest craftsman, not the prophet Isaiah, and the bemused and futile Wotan is no Zeus, and I have come to prefer a lighter voice in both roles. The Eva and Magdalene seem to me good though not outstanding, although Donath produces a superb final trill at 'so hold zu werben weiss'. The big effects are big indeed here. The tradesmen process like the gods entering Valhalla in The Rhinegold, but in my own view we should think of that comparison the other way round - Wagner's gods are a wretched lot and their Valhalla a miserable tabernacle of delusion, which they enter like the cobblers bakers and tailors of Nuremberg. There is a lot of choral work here, Wagner was no Handel in that regard to put it mildly, but Karajan rightly plays the effect up.

As always with Karajan, there's nothing much to criticise. However in all my life I'm not sure I can remember anything I would rather hear done by him than by anyone else. I have come back to The Mastersingers after a long time and with no other performance in my head, but I had wistful thoughts of how Fuertwaengler or Toscanini or Beecham might have done it. To that 'Silentium! Silentium!', to quote the apprentices. This is a fine issue, this is a great work, and I feel a better man for just having listened to it.

5 out of 5 stars Babies LOVE Bach.......2005-11-22

My twin daughters listened to this album in the womb, they were born with this album playing in the background and now I play it for them regularly in the car. Timeless beautiful music that every child deserves to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, soothing music- this is the one to buy!.......2002-08-24

My son LOVES this CD- we've played it to him every night since he was in the womb and it always soothes him when he's fussy. We've purchased a number of other "baby classical music CD's" that have ranged in quality from decent to awful, but this one is absolutely sublime. It has a beautiful selection of the original arrangements- not some watered-down, re-arranged baby versions.

5 out of 5 stars The Babies Love Bach!.......2000-08-01

I am employed as a teacher in a daycare facility and work with children from the ages of 1-2 years of age. I purchased this CD to play when the children are going down for their daily naps after lunch. They absolutely adore the beautiful music contained on this CD...and so do I. After they have all fallen asleep I straighten up the room and prepare for the afternoon while being soothed myself by the wonderful melodies from Bach. Every one a gem! I highly recommend this CD to anyone who needs to unwind and let go of some of the stress built up during a long day. Play it for the babies and play it for yourselves as well.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs Bach!.......2000-03-10

Forget the baby picture on the cover and the title; this is superb music by Bach, the Great One. Beautiful performances, outstanding sound, and sublime music, what more could you want? (well, ok, better liner notes would be a good start.) Anyways, our baby has this played nightly to him but I don't know whether he or the grownup enjoys it more! Spend a few bucks, add some great music to the life of your family and kids, and encourage a lifetime appreciation of music!

4 out of 5 stars Good for baby or good for profits?.......1999-10-05

I promised myself I would never again review these compilations in which pieces of this and that longer composition are pulled out of context and rearranged under some pretext as "A Night in Spain" or "Beethoven Goes to the Movies" or this latest "scientific" discovery that peaceful music is good for babies. Peaceful music is good for everybody, for heaven's sake; and the only reason I am writing this is because I am playing the Delos CD and it put me into a good mood.

Any decent classical collection will doubtless have all these pieces in their proper places; but if you are giving a candlelight supper and want some very nice background music, this CD is a wonderful source of same.

But getting to the point, I shudder to think of wee ones growing up bombarded by ear-splitting rock or salsa or rap and of what it does to their growing nervous systems (the adults are probably beyond all hope by this time). Perhaps Bach and Mozart and the other composers who will appear in this "Baby Needs..." series will not make them any smarter, but it certainly will not fry their cerbral cortexes before they can walk.

Of course this is a selling gimmick! But with music as beautful as this, who cares?

Classical music for children has become a genre unto itself, founded on the premise of brain-power building and all too often steering parental buyers away from the full-blown versions of particular compositions toward reorchestrated renditions. It's frequently the case that a brain-tickling classical set will be played on digital keyboards, with softened tonal colors and shapes. Not so with this excellent Beethoven set. Recognized ensembles take up the music, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to the New York Chamber Symphony to the Oxford String Quartet and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The emphasis is on Beethoven's gentler side, from the poetic "Für Elise" for solo piano to the bucolic settings portrayed in the two selections from Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. This is neither a synapse-popping set of virtuoso performances nor an altered look at Beethoven, but it is a well-selected, well-programmed set of works that will ease a child's brain into the works at hand. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Beautiful Renditions.......2003-12-14

This is lovely, soothing music suitable for babies or tired adults! I began listening to it and other "Baby Needs" CD's (the Guitar compilation is wonderful too) before my daughter was born, and have continued to play it for her ever since. Even Classical music purists shouldn't object to hearing just portions of major works-- the compensation is having a complete collection of calm, peaceful music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Music for Baby.......2000-11-05

This is a delightful collection of Beethoven's most soothing, melodic pieces. It is good for background music or for quieting a fussy or tired baby. I highly recommend it.
