Hidden Treasure.......2005-01-06
I am attracted to collections like this. I started listening to popular music about 1968. The only way I heard music made before 1968 was from hearing it later on oldies stations. As another reviewer said, the oldies stations usually play only the "big hits". That means there are hundreds or thousands of early oldies that we never hear on the radio anymore. Some of these never-played songs are like hidden treasures, waiting to be discovered by someone willing to dig. That's where a collection like this comes in.
I knew I would not be wasting my money on this disc because of "Make Believe" by Wind and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" by Blue Haze, favorites from my teen years. Even "Tennessee Bird Walk", which I hated as a 14-year old in 1970, I now enjoy. For me, the hidden treasures on this disc were "Tell Him No" by Dean & Marc and "The Lone Teen Ranger" by Jerry Landis. "Teenage Cleopatra" was OK, as were a few others. The worst song on the disc is "Baby Sittin' Boogie". I thought I was getting the Buzz Clifford(?) version, which is funny, but this version is just awful.
So if you insist on loving every track on a disc, don't buy this one. But if you are interested in finding hidden treasures, go for it. You are bound to really like at least a few of these obscure songs.
Gotta Be Kiddin'.......2004-11-16
George from Ottawa should have done this review under his "Avid Oldies Collector" sobriquet as you need to be REALLY avid, even agog, to want this compilation of flotsam and jetsam. Unless you are trying to acquire all of the songs ever recorded to hold, then sell for a profit--well, even if you ARE--take a pass on this one. People selling banana peels and calling them bananas.
GREAT.......2003-06-26
A NICE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL STUFF BUT QUALITY DROPS OUT ON SOME OF THE TRACKS...

I HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR THE RECORD "TEENAGE CLEOPATRA" BY TRACY DEY. IT WAS POPULAR HERE IN SOUTHERN CA. IN THE MID 60'S.MOST OF THE SONGS IN THIS SERIES MIGHT NOT HAVE ALL BEEN TOP TWENTY HITS, BUT IT WAS THE STUFF THE RADIO WAS PLAYING AND WE LIKED IT. TODAY'S OLDIES STATIONS ONLY PLAY WHAT WAS TOP TWENTY BUT WE MISS THE OTHER RECORDS JUST AS MUCH!THEY JUST WEREN'T PUSHED INTO THE MAINSTREAM OR MISMANAGED. AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE ANNETTE FUNICELLO'S BEAUTIFUL BALAD "TALK TO ME, BABY" (WRITTEN BY PAUL ANKA).BUY THE WHOLE SERIES AND YOU'LL DISCOVER ALOT OF GOOD MUSIC THAT YOU'VE NEVER HEARD, IF YOU DIDN'T LIVE IN THE 50'S AND 60'S.GO FOR IT. MAN, IT'S WHAT AMERICAN POP WAS ALL ABOUT!
A few more hits and a lot more oddities.......2002-02-24
Sixth installment in the "Hey Look..." series of oldies compilations has the usual sprinkling of better-known hits nestled within a string of some really strange and obscure tracks from the earlier years of rock and roll. Some of the higher-charting entries are Wind's (aka Tony Orlando) "Make Believe", the Chartbusters' "She's The One" and Frank Gari's "Princess". Among the 13 other top-100 songs are such rarities as Dean and Marc's version of Travis and Bob's top-ten hit "Tell Him No", Jimmie Rodgers' "Rainbow At Midnight" and Claude Gray's "I'll Just Have Another Cup Of Coffee". More interesting for their backround then the songs themselves are tracks such as Glen Campbell's first charted single "Turn Around, Look At Me" later a top-ten hit by the Vogues, Jerry Landis' (aka Paul Simon) "Lone Teen Ranger" and Bobby Pedrick's (aka Robert John) "Maybe". Just plain oddities include such sides as Ralph Bendix' version of Buzz Clifford's "Baby Sittin' Boogie". Sound quality is mostly listenable if not pristine though decidedly mediocre on the noisier tracks (2,5,6). Two tracks from the seventies (26 and 27) do appear in stereo. Though not the sound quality wished for, this collection does offer a lot of never-before-on-CD hits and misses for both the casual listener and more avid collector.
As track listings were not provided at the time of this review, they are given here:

Three Generous Stars.......2004-11-16
Better than usual by these bottom feeders. Three good ones; guess which. Don't buy.
GREAT STUFF POOR QUALITY.......2003-03-01
As with the whole series...great collection but sadly the quality is as good as I could do myself using my home computer to convert my old records to CD.
More effort needed if they do more in the series.

Customer Reviews:
Boy, is THIS Rare!.......2004-11-16
That's not a question. Used to be, in the days of LPs, there would be available hit songs from the past but if you weren't careful, you'd buy and find out they were not by the original artists but by Joe Banana and the Five Peels. The people who compiled this ripoff have a lot of nerve! One star each for Mark Dinning's "All of This for Sally" and The Amazing Rhythm Aces' contribution. Really!
More obscurities - mostly.......2002-03-03
Another 27 mostly minor hits and misses from the late 50s into the mid-70s with a few decent-charting hard-to-find sides thrown in, served up by the Mavis outfit in Canada. While some of these titles may sound familiar, these versions are by artists whose version took a back seat, or in some cases took no seat at all, to the real hit version. Bill and Doree Post's version of "Sixteen Reasons" had no chance against Connie Stevens' top-10 version. The "Alley-Oop" version here by Dante and the Evergreens, while second to the Hollywood Argyles' monster hit at least outdid a third version by the Dyna-Sores. Garry Miles' "Look For A Star" actually edged out versions by Garry Mills and Deane Hawley. Jimmie Rodgers treatment of "Wreck Of The John B", much more in the folk style of the song's origin, was virtually ignored and the song unknown until the Beach Boys made a top pop hit out of it in 1966. Tracey Dey's pounding version of Patience and Prudence's squishy 1956 hit "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" deserved more attention on the charts than it received in 1964. While the versions of songs here are mostly the losing ones, that is part of what makes this collection more interesting in that it doesn't recycle the same tunes found in other compilations. There are a few sides included for their sheer idoicy alone such as the so-called Alfred E. Neuman's "It's A Gas", the vocals of which consists entirely of belches. The downfall here, as with the other volumes in this series, is the mediocre sound quality that at times is fairly miserable - tracks 10 and 18 are particularly ragged. Of these needle drops, at least a few - 13,15,25 are from stereo discs and sound reasonably clean. Following the theme of this series, this volume provides some more obscure hits and misses for those who are seeking out some of these truly rarely, if ever, found-on-CD tunes. As the track listings were not supplied at the time of this review they are listed below.
1) (Make With) The Shake - Mark IV; 2) I've Got A Lot To Learn - Kenny Rogers; 3) Bewitched - Betty Smith Group; 4) Tennessee Waltz - Jerry Fuller; 5) Starry Eyed - Garry Stites; 6) Marina - Rocco Granata; 7) I'll Walk The Line - Don Costa; 8) Everybody Outta The Pool - Lifeguards; 9) Bad Boy - Marty Wilde; 10) Alley-Oop - Dante & Evergreens; 11) Look For A Star - Garry Miles; 12) Sixteen Reasons - Bill & Doree Post; 13) Wreck Of The John B - Jimmie Rodgers; 14) Hello Fool - Ralph Emery; 15) I Could Have Loved You So Well - Ray Peterson; 16) All Of This For Sally - Mark Dinning; 17) It's A Gas - Alfred E. Neuman; 18) The Twistin' Ghost - Maximillian; 19) Jealous Fool - Jimmy Breedlove; 20) Blue Guitar - Richard Chamberlain; 21) My Baby's Just Crazy 'Bout Elvis - Mike Sarne; 22) Gonna Get Along Without You Now - Tracey Dey; 23) Hey-Da-Da-Dow - Dolphins; 24) Noshville Katz - Lovin' Cohens; 25) God, Love And Rock And Roll - Teegarden & Van Winkle; 26) Third Rate Romance - Amazing Rhythm Aces; 27) The Biggest Parakeets - Jud Strunk

More surprising finds.......2001-11-03
Mavis of Canada rolls out another collection of moderate and lesser hits along with B-sides and obscure non-charting singles. Included in this eclectic gathering of pop tunes from the fifties through the mid-seventies are several instrumentals and novelty tunes. The one charting entry by Louis Prima not found in other CDs, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" makes its CD debut here. Another one-hit instrumental to see the CD-light of day is the Incredible Bongo Band's "Bongo Rock" from 1973. Other one-hit wonders to appear include the break-in novelty tune "Russian Band Stand" from Spencer and Spencer aka Dickie Goodman of "Flying Saucer" fame and the top-20 rarer-than-hens-teeth "One Has My Name" by Barry Young. As in the other volumes of the series, sound quality is inconsistant, not to be unexpected given the range of age and obscurity of these titles. Tracks 15,24,26 and 27 appear in stereo with the remainder in mono. While most, if not all, of these are needle drops, they are mostly fairly clean sounding without massive noise compression making them reasonably listenable. Putting the less than pristine sound quality aside, this is an interesting collection of extremely rare pop tunes of the era.

These guys keep finding stuff..........2001-08-22
Volume nine continues this series of compilations of seldom-if-ever-found-elsewhere tunes mostly from the early days of rock and roll. Here is another mixed bag of lesser hits, b-sides and non-charting curiosities. While many of these songs won't be instantly recognized, there are a few finds here for the collector of some long-lost 45s from the days of AM radio. Some of these may be of interest more for their backround than for the songs themselves such as Carly Simon with her sister doing "Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod" or Simon and Garfunkel's "Baby Talk" as by Tom and Jerry. And "Like Columbus Did" by the Reflections has to rank as one of the top 10 sound-alike follow-up songs (to "Just Like Romeo and Juliet") of all rock and roll time. As with others in the series, the sound quality varies greatly. Some have been lifted from clean vinyl with reasonable presence while a few tracks have noticable distortion and lots of groove noise. A few appear in true stereo (13,17,20 and 27) with the remainder in mono. Liner notes are limited to a track listing with no further information. Shortcomings aside, as the title infers, these volumes keep coming up with a few more tracks satisfying the thirst of collectors and completists for long-lost songs of the rock and roll era.

Two Generous Stars.......2004-11-16
That's for #'s 13 and 15 for good but seldom-seen tunes. The rest is so amazingly who-cares.
About as good as you're gonna get 'em.......2001-08-20
Volume 7 in this series gathers up another 27 tracks of moderate hits, minor hits and misses. Part of what makes this compilation interesting is the inclusion of charted tracks of artists whose songs have been compiled elsewhere except for the songs included here. Here is about the only place to find "Molly" by Bobby Goldsboro or "Be Careful of Stones That You Throw" by Dion. Also thrown in are such rarities as the Kids Next Door's "Inky Dinky Spider" and Lewis and Clarke Expedition's "I Feel Good". Adding to this eclectic mix of 50s and 60s tunes are a couple of hit titles from the 70s and 80s ("Mammy Blue" and "Sausalito Summernight"). While the sound quality is uneven with many, if not all, of these being needle drops, most of the tracks are reasonably clean sounding without obnoxious compression. Tracks 11,13,18,26 and 27 are in true stereo with the remainder in mono. The liner notes booklet provides a listing of the included tracks and no other information. Given the obscurity of many of these tunes, the less than stellar sound quality can be mostly forgiven and what you have here is a reasonably listenable collection of not-to-be-found-elsewhere rock and roll oldies.
I Feel Good, I Feel Bad.......2000-10-22
This song, by the Lewis and Clarke Expedition, is the only one I can find anywhere that they recorded. Travis Lewis a.k.a. Michael Martin Murphey and his buddy, Boomer Clarke, recorded under this name in the late 60's.
You mean...there's MORE?.......2000-09-25
I bought Volumes 1, 2 and 3 some time ago, and thouht that was as far as the series went. I'm stunned - and delighted - to see there's actually NINE volumes of this series (and maybe more!). The first three volumes were outstanding, and you can bet I'm gonna grab the other ones first chance I get.
