Brad Sinsel had a bit of a follwing which he took into his War Babies project. Will Brad certainly has a whiskey soaked voice that he used to good effect over these mildly battle weary tunes.

It's hard for me to separate the tracks on this release. The lead cut Hang Me Up roars along suitably but after that it just turns into a drone. There is so little reason to pick any of these tunes as a highlight except perhaps Cry Yourself to Sleep. The band seems suitably talented, they can certainly pen a tune. The X factor is missing here though. They certainly look like every other rawk band of LA 1991 (or London 2006) despite the fact that Sinsel was Seattle based.

Which brings me to the bit where I try to tell you some other bands these guys could be compared to. Well not much from Seattle except Pearl Jam in terms of integrity and grit. A touch of lowdown Keef or Izzy style guitar styling and for British readers - a lead throat that is roughly halfway to Spike from Quireboys (circa 92 or so). None of which is a bad thing per se.

A fine, solid effort evocative of good times gone bad (see track 5 - Sea of Madness) but not one that demands regular visits to my stereo.

5 out of 5 stars If only it had been released a little earlier!.......2006-06-06

War Babies were a great bluesy-hard rock band, sounding like a cross between early Motley Crue and Illusion era GunsnRoses. But better. A superior singer (still with the same style) and great guitars set the pace for some truly stellar songs. Hang Me Up, In the Wind, Cry Yourself To Sleep, Sweetwater, Sea Of Madness, Blue Tomorrow - hell half the album is made up of classics!

The fact that they never had any real success is hard to fathom - had this been released before Appetite for Destruction they would have taken over the world. Personally i feel that this album is more consistent than the above mentioned, though i'm sure many will disagree.

If you're sick of people banging on about how good Guns, Motley and the rest of them were, grab this and show them one of the best albums the genre has to offer. I also recommend Heavy Bones, which came out around the same era before disappearing, showing a sad state of affairs as such great music was allowed to die in favour of shortlived grunge.

I'm not a huge fan of bluesy-hard rock, but this is one album that i will be listening to for years to come! Don't let this album be forgotten!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing album.......2006-03-05

I own over 400 CDs, ... this one ranks in the top 10, still !!. It is amazingly powerful, original, the lyrics are awesome, the music is unique and the vocals captivating. I would like to give a framework for comparing it but I can't. I wish these guys had put out more albums. They are truly awesome, I highly recomend this album !

5 out of 5 stars THIS BAND SHOULD KILL GRUNGE.......2005-11-26

i got this cd a month ago, and i can say it broke my face, its excellent hard rock i dont know why this guys thanks to pearl jam, PEARL JAM SUCKS, GRUNGE SUCKS AND PEOPLE THAT LISTEN TO GRUNGE SUCK TOO, i hope there were bands like war babies because i was sick and im still sick that bands like guns n roses got all the attention in the 80's and i bought a couple of cds here in amazon and i know that this kind of bands could kick everybody asses, i dont know what producers were thinking and the fans too, they only bought what mtv was selling and i also like the popular bands (MOTLEY, SKID, DEF LEPPARD, WARRANT, SLAUGHTER, CINDERELLA, RATT, ETC) but there were bands that deserve to be more famous than these, best musicians and better music, without the drugs and the girls, anyway long live hard rock forever

4 out of 5 stars A different side of Seattle.......2004-07-30

It was a early Saturday morning in April of 1992. I was on a camping trip in Point Pleasant, PA. I was listening to a rock station in Allentown, and I heard something for the first time that sounded like a country and western song, but then it began thrashing the heebie jeebies out of me, and I ran over to CRANK IT UP!!!!!! I would find out later it was a group named War Babies, and the song was called "Sweetwater". I'd also go onto find out that they were from Seattle WA. I was mindblown again as the groups coming out of Seattle at the time were Grunge like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice In Chains. War Babies sounded more like a bluesey group, and didn't fit into the picture. I'd be cranking it at high volume in my car at all times. Unfortunately, they only released one single called "Hang Her Up", and disappeared. "Sweetwater" wound up going to #2 on my heavy metal/hard rock poll for 1992. "Alive" from Pearl Jam took the top spot.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

5 out of 5 stars War Babies.......2007-01-10

I owned this album on plastic when it first came out, and lost it. I looked in stores for years and was convinced it was no longer available, until now. This is is vintage Hall and Oates from the early seventies. This album followed their classic "Abandoned Luncheonette" and was produced by Todd Rundgren, who contributes to the futuristic, spacey, sound that the duo took on at the time. The title track is my favorite, with a haunting melody and the trade mark harmonies that make Hall and Oates possibly the best duo ever. There's a ballad called "Im Watching You" with Daryl singing lead that has enough soul for the entire cd. If you are a Hall and Oates fan, this is mandatory for your collection. The songs are raw, with basic instrumentation, but the genius is there.
You have to hear it!

3 out of 5 stars GOOD ALBUM, AWFUL REMASTER.......2006-11-03

I'm giving it 3 stars in part cause while it's a very interesting album and everything, it sounds like Rundgren told John oates to take a hike besides shared lead vocals on two songs. plus with the songs Hall is credited solely for, there's progressions and changes that are obviously Rundgren.
That aside, this recent remaster is horrid. To hear this album correctly, find the vinyl, cassette or earlier Japanese import. I seeked out someone who has the latter and they made me a copy. i used to have this on cassette and that sounded great compared to this reissue. in short, it's VERY LOUD. completely sucked of dynamics and subtleties.
otherwise, it's an odd but worthy Hall & Oates album

5 out of 5 stars War Babies.......2006-02-03

There's a reason Hall & Oates have erased this one from their history. "War Babies" is really a Todd Rundgren album in which Daryl Hall happens to be singing songs that he wrote.

The production is unmistakeable Todd. It sounds just like "A Wizard, a True Star" and "Todd", his two 'psychedelic' albums that were recorded right around the same time (I think this fell in between the two, chronologically).

Todd basically tosses Oates to the side, and takes over on guitar. Which is a good thing. His classic "blistering" solos are stamped over "Is It a Star", sweet arpeggios on "You're Much Too Soon", slide guitar solo on "I'm Watching You", and funky licks on "Better Watch Your Back" (by far the catchiest song on here).

He has also enlisted the original rhythm section from Utopia (John Seigler on bass, Jon Wilcox on drums), so the songs are capable of meandering around, switching tempos at the drop of a hat. There's a frightening middle section on "Is it a Star?" that scared the hell out of me as a kid. Also, a sharp turn on "Screaming Through December" turns a haunting piano ballad into some weird spacey funk suite.

Also highlights are the lush "Can't Stop the Music" (the only John Oates penned song on the album), the clavinet-driven funk "Beane G. and the Rose Tattoo", the melodically rich "You're Much Too Soon" (which is the closest you'll get to the "classic" Hall & Oates sound), and the catchy title track "War Baby Son of Zorro", which sounds like a cross between "International Feel" and "Sunset Boulavard" from Todd's aforementioned AWATS album.

So, I would recommend this highly for Todd Rundgren fans who enjoy "A Wizard, a True Star". You've basically got the same lineup of talented musicians, with the addition of another really talented guy in Daryl Hall. Just don't expect "Abandoned Luncheonette 2".

5 out of 5 stars A Todd Piece of Work!.......2005-12-06

War Babies is far from your typical Hall & Oates fare; I dare say it's the most challenging to listen to of all their albums. Greatly to 'blame' is the contribution of one eccentric producer genius, Mr Todd Rundgren! Coming off the schizophrenic consecutive releases of his own two classics, Something/Anything and Wizard/A True Star, Rundgren (a Philly boy just like Hall & Oates), turned the duo's music on its head with his idiosyncratic arranging and production.

Digesting War Babies took me the better half of my life ...! I was bred on the classic Hall & Oates 80s sounds of Voices, Private Eyes and H2O. I gradually made my way through their back catalogue and albums like War Babies and Hall's Sacred Songs were listened to once and left on the shelf. Only after years of listening to different kinds of music, did I finally GET into War Babies. The album is an aural collage of decadent-sounding urban rock, funk and soul sounds, peppered with odd-time signature rhythms and spaced-out guitar licks from Rundgren himself. Do not expect to find hit singles on this album - it is meant to be listened to as a whole, from start to finish. And that is the beauty of the album. Was Rundgren's work appreciated by the dynamic duo? Probably not, as they never revisited this sound, although Hall did venture into progressive territory, albeit a different sounding one with his Sacred Songs.

Is there anything out there that sounds like War Babies? Probably not, although Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World keeps popping in my head - must be the similar dense and thematic nature of both albums.

War Babies is worth the effort in tracking it down, if you can find it. The CD version that I have is part of the 1998 Atlantic 50th Anniversary Digipak series (European Import).

5 out of 5 stars Out of the Blue.......2005-10-21

Allow me to be brief here. This CD, War Babies, has got to be one of the most creative, innovative, imaginative, complex and
stirring albums I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. One only needs to listen closely to the depth of this release. On the
surface, this CD appears rough, scattered, uneven and possibly
a bit over produced. But if you listen as a musician would, you'd find very intense chord progressions, difficult drum parts and of course amazingly strong vocals. This was not an easy project to complete. I give Hall and Oates major respect for
attermping such a project of this magnitude. Sure this is not your average Hall and Oates release but that's what makes this CD so special. Don't compare it with their other albums. This CD stands alone and should be treated as such. It's an amazing piece of work both in the past and the present.

George Clinton's Funkadelic went through many changes over the years and though the group's name is here, neither the personnel nor the music has much in common with the earlier incarnations. That said, there is some fantastic playing here. Newer members--Blackbyrd McKnight, Ron Ford, and Ron Dunbar among them--keep the energy level high and shift the music into heavy funk. Clinton pal and influence Sly Stone takes a few turns at the mike and Eddie Hazel proves there was no guitar player more equipped to match wits with Clinton. The lyrics are sublimely surreal and the band's musical quotes (including "She Loves You") are dexterous and right on the money. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars For Your Collection--No Doubt.......2006-09-06

I purchased this on vinyl when it was two years old and being the PFunk fan that I am, I called every record distributer that I could find that would have this album as it went out of print shortly after it was released in 1981. I found it in NYC for $14.00 which was alot of money when albums were selling for $6.00. Anyways, I opened it, played it and said What the *&^%^* is this? I have listened again over the years to the album and it has not grown on me except for "Oh,I". I like the Parliament version better you need to check out Rodney "Skeet" Curtis. Very Nasty on the Bass Guitar. He added flavor to a sinking Mothership. Although I did not care for this album much, "Oh, I " is what kept me listening. I would not trade my album for all the Funk in the world--It's Still Funkadelic!

5 out of 5 stars Funkadelic's last but not least album.......2006-01-24

The group had still lots of creative energy left when they made their last album. On the long run two non-funk-tracks from B-side, "Shockwaves" and "Oh, I", get tiresome but the rest of the album is superb. The album is very carefully produced with lots of nice musical ideas here and there. Also riffs are well composed. I especially like those riffs from second track, that end with a sharp piano chord. I have always considered this as an essential funk album.

5 out of 5 stars ahead of its time.......2004-01-30

Anyone who doesn't like this album is slow or lacks a sense of originality. This was a very original cd with a little bit of everything on it.My favorites include funk gets stronger 1 and 2
and the title track. The influence of this album is heard (especially the horns and drumline of funk gets stronger)in a lot of rap music. If you have any taste or sense of originality
buy this album.

2 out of 5 stars Funkadelic's swan song...........2002-12-24

When this album first came out (in 1981) I couldn't wait to get it home and play it. Funkadelic's previous LP, 'Uncle Jam Wants You', was okay, but it was more of an advertisement for George's Uncle Jam Records. I figured that this would be a proper Funkadelic album. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Yes, this was a proper Funkadelic album, so to speak, but....it just wasn't the same. The title cut, with it's weird spoken intro, was very good. The next song, "Electro-Cuties", I dunno...at first I thought it was extremely stupid. I've listened to it recently, and I've reconsidered my judgement of it. While it doesn't rate with any previous Funkadelic songs, it isn't as bad as I first thought. "Funk Gets Stronger" is a good, mellow Funk song. "Brettino's Bounce" is alright, reminds me of the old "Kidd Funkadelic" song. "Funk Gets Stronger (Killa Millameter
Version)" was great. Good to hear ol' Sly in action. I don't know why the "She Loves You" snippet was in there. Maybe it was a tribute to John Lennon who died while this LP was being recorded. I can't stand "Shockwaves"! The music was cool, but the lyrics were kinda trite, especially the corny references to soap operas. "Oh, I" was good. I heard that "Oh, I" was originally supposed to be a Parliament song. The very best song of the album was saved for last: "Icka-Prick". Now this was a good ol' Funkadelic song: Weird, Funky, and Nasty! The problem with this album was that there were too many new faces on the scene. Too many unknowns were writing the songs. This album doesn't come remotely close to any of the previous albums (with the possible exception of 'Uncle Jam Wants You', which is still a better album). Buy this album only to complete your Funkadelic collection.

5 out of 5 stars Shock it to the circuit/ tell it in the digital.......2007-06-24

This is the last of the original "Funkadelic" albums. It was released during the fall of the P-Funk army. Lawsuits, band members leaving.George fighting with record companies. It was a total mess at this time. P-FUnk was wearing thin at this time, so this did not get any airplay hardly. I think the masses really missed a great album. If you see the liner notes, there were so many musicians and vocalists at the time. The title cut has only 2 musicians. Walter "Junie" Morrison plays everything execpt the intense guitar lead which was done by Micheal Hampton. Electro Cuties is a tight jam. Shockwaves is great. The whole album is off the hook. "Icka Prick" was actually a stab @ the record company. The fighting was over the album cover. SOme women's right movement raised hell about it, but my question was...what about all of the other Funkadelic album covers? The lady on the back of the cover name is "Sleeza" or something like that. FOrget the album cover. IT's a great album. I recommend to get this. This was the last of the orignal "Funkadelic" albums. Parliament's "Trombipulation" was out at the time which also did not do so well. Casablanca sold to Polygram. Poor George. No contracts. He did have his own record company "Uncle Jam' Records. Zapps "More Bounce To The Ounce" was actually the hottest thing at that time. "Sweatband" did no do too well with "Freak 2 Freak"...............

After some recent clinkers,Funkadelic reemmerge as a
creative force here on "Electric Spanking".The tital track is
a funky rock triumph-enough to make Hendrix proud."Electro Cuties" is showcases the bands tightest funk.Part one of the
double attack "Funk Gets Stronger" is a genre beding noise-fest
of funk, rock and latin beats, lyrics and guitar pyrotechnics while
the Sly Stone-whipped second part focuses more attention on the
the indicated guess, even musically."Shock Wave" is an ammusing
dive into P-Funk-reggae,"Oh,I" is the only song here with any
"radio-friendly" possibilities while the filthy "Icka Prick"
could even make Prince blush, but not Blowfly (?)The heavily latin
"Brattino's Bounce" sounds like filler but it works in the
overall context.A richer, varried and far better produced way to
get into this particular generation of Funkadelic.

5 out of 5 stars Great Underrated P.Funk CD.......2002-10-29

I am speaking as a true funkateer when I say that this CD is awesome. When "Uncle Jam" was released, people thought that Funkadelic had replaced the blaring guitars of earlier works with layers of synth noises. But when "Electric Spaking" came out, it pretty much mixed the two together, and the result was one insane piece of great music. Do not listen to the negative reviews of this CD on the unremastered 'Electric Spanking' page...if you're a big P.Funk fan and you're hesitating to get this CD because you've heard that it's 'not as good as the earlier P.Funk thangs' or 'the 79-81 P.Funk CDs [weren't good]', take some advice from a real funkateer: BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!

A very talented and almost unheard of band.A must for any true fan of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. What ever happened to these guys? I'm disappointed that they didn't make anymore music. This was a breath of fresh air back when it was first released back in 1992.

5 out of 5 stars "On the eve of destruction in my hotel room".......2004-02-09

This album is a little bit country, a smidgen of metal and a whole heck of a lot of rock 'n roll! I bought this CD in 1992 right after I saw the music video for the killer "Hang Me Up" (a song about televangelists). They were played a lot on MTV's Headbangers ball when this CD came out. War Babies was a straight forward rock 'n roll band with some country rock sound to boot. Seven tracks on here are 5-star material: "Hang Me Up," "The Wind," the slow rocker "Cry Yourself to Sleep," the butt-kickin' "Sweetwater," "Sea of Madness," "Satellite," and "Big Big Sun." The rest are good as well. There is a metal influence on this CD but more of the goodtime rock 'n roll type; not the dark, heavy type. I definitely recommend this CD to any fan of crunchy guitar, screaming vocalist, country rock. Shop around though as the extra tracks on this pricey import do not seem like much.

        4 out of 5 stars the funkaclimax.......2001-03-30

the last funkadelic p fans like myself werte disappointed not a good cd like previous funkadelic eddie hazel is featured on it i wish he could have gave us a swan song maggot-style michael hampton's playing is okay. oh yeah features sly stone, and zapp frontman roger troutman, who left the mob soon afterwards, not recognizable like other p-funk classics but no true p collector is funked up without it.there are few quality cuts on here that shed some light.
