Album Description
Yes, the Cowsill brothers were the real-life inspiration for the Partridge Family, but by this, their third album for MGM released in 1969, they had moved beyond the bubblegum into a whole new, art pop realm. You'll hear Kinks and especially Beatles influences on these lightly psychedelic songs, with great production touches, orchestral flourishes and, of course, superb harmonies. In short, this is a flat-out sunshine pop classic, here reissued with new notes featuring new Cowsills quotes...a Collectors' Choice Music exclusive!
Customer Reviews:
Poor remastering ruins a classic reissue........2005-12-21
My mother bought "We Can Fly" for me in a discount store cutout bin in the early 70's when I was a kid. Despite the album being a few years old by then, it's been a favorite of mine ever since due to its great songwriting, huge orchestral arrangements that almost rival "Pet Sounds" and those always wonderful Cowsills family harmonies.
Many 60's Soft Pop fans and the Cowsills themselves consider "We Can Fly" to be thier best album. Compared to the group's first album and early singles which used mostly outside songwriters, this LP was the first album that the group self-produced and wrote themselves. Despite the album's high quality it wound up being a weak seller and a disapontment to MGM Records, which dumped deleted copies into the $2.99 album discount bins for years. Honestly, I never thought it would ever be reissued due to its low sales.
That said, I was happily surprised to see this album finally on compact disc and anxiously awaited it's arrival. When I first played the CD, I was quickly disapointed at the careless remastering. This CD has been remastered "Out of Phase" - which means the polarity of the left and right channels has been reversed. If you play this CD on a good stereo with the "Mono" buttion enabled the lead vocals mixed in the center will disapear. And if you listen in stereo (especally on headphones), the lead vocals will sound like they are behind you, instead of up front where they should be. This is NOT the way the original Stereo MGM album was mixed and originally mastered on vinyl (and I own 3 copies of it). The tracks from this album on the Polydor/Rebound Cowsills "Best Of" CD are not out of phase either!
To add insult, the track listing on the back is totally incorrect, more proof of a careless sloppy rush job. The track "We Can Fly" appears in its true stereo LP form on this release, not the mono 45 single version.
When I e-mailed Collectors Choice about the remastering, I got a response a few days later saying "When albums are remastered, they sometimes sound different" (well DUH!). This only goes to show that Collectors Choice does not care about the way thier music sounds, only that people buy it. Classy record reissue companies like Sundazed, Rhino and Ace Records in the UK take the time to make sure everything on a CD is correct before its approved for manufacturing.
I reluctantly suggest staying away from buying this reissue, unless Collectors Choice fixes this remastering problem.

At LAST!!.......2006-05-12
Like countless thousands of other true "music lovers," all I could say when I first spotted this CD was a resounding, "At LAST!!" I am one of the most loyal Ray Conniff fans in existence, but can I still be a lover of Johnny Mann's offerings to the world of great music? You bet your music-loving life I can, and so can you! This "two-fer" CD features some of the best selections Johnny Mann ever produced, and like you who sample this CD, I cannot wait for other collections to come out. His treatments of many songs that were successfully interpreted and produced by Conniff and the Ray Charles Singers still feature Johnny Mann's special individuality, and such songs as "People," "Al-Di-La, "Love Me with All Your Heart," and "Shangri-La" are special indeed. But the best are "Blue Velvet," "Portrait of My Love," and "The World I Used to Know," which are songs that passed "special" at a sprint, and which I am certain you will enjoy immensely.
GOOD MUSIC LIVES!.......2005-05-26
I am purchasing this CD as soon as possible, as I have not been able to find any re-issued material from the Johnny Mann Singers until now.
All the albums by the Johnny Mann Singers always featured an excellent choice of material, great arrangements and harmonies, and were a staple of programming at "Good Music"/"Easy Listening" stations, which are few and far between these days.
Kudos to the folks at Tarragon for re-mastering and re-releasing great music of the past such as Johnny Mann Singers, Bert Kaempfert and others.
If you like your music on the easy side, without it being from the Elevator Genre, then get this CD..you won't regret it!.
ONE OF THE BEST!! GET IT NOW!!.......2003-01-26
The Invisible Tears lp from the Johnny Mann Singers is one of my all-time favorite lp's. It has great sentimental value and I'm so GLAD that finally someone--the great Taragon-- has had the class to put this one out on CD, with an extra Johnny Mann Singers lp to boot!! With the abysmal [stuff] that now is called music nowadays, let's support the companies that are offering wonderful old recordings on CD. This CD's time has finally come!! One of the greatest in choice of selections AND harmonies etc.... thanks TARAGON! (And now how about a great complete BOX SET from the Johnny Mann Singers??)

Customer Reviews:
Jonatha Brooke's "I'll Try" is worth the purchase........2007-06-23
The soundtrack in total is better than most Disney Films...But the song "I'll Try" is a classic and the CD should be purchased to hear the singing and songwriting of Jonatha Brooke. Why this song did not get an Oscar nod, when songs of less substance do each year is perplexing. If you liked the film or did not even see it...the CD is worth the price. In addition Jonatha Brooke has many more CDs out of her music and one can instantly be hooked (no pun intended) at first listen...
Loved It! Loved It! Loved It!.......2006-02-25
When I saw the movie, I first saw it in the movie theater and then on Disney Channel. I heard the song "I'll Try" and immediatly wanted the soundtrack. I also wanted the movie. Jonatha Brooke's song made me want to fly. :) I personally never want to grow up and this movie and song help you stay childish and care-free longer. It trully is a beautiful song and a beautiful movie.
"I'll Try".......2005-02-17
The movie was okay, but the song "I'll Try" just made me want to see it again and again. It's so great!! I love it!!
Jonatha Brooke.......2003-06-19
Have to say I hated the movie, but when the song 'I'll Try' played, I immediately recognized the amazing talent of Jonatha Brooke. It is a beautiful song and if you enjoy it, I highly recommend you listen to her other stuff. She has several solo albums, all of which are good, but her best work (in my opinion)is the stuff she did as part of a Boston based duo called 'The Story'. Their album 'Grace in Gravity', is one of my all time favorites. The harmonies on the album are astounding and complex. Jonatha has a penchant for minor keys and her phrasing is unmistakeable. Superb stuff for the music enthusiast.
10 year old and loving it!!:).......2002-05-30
Personally I love Peter Pan things and that "I'll Try..."song made me cry when I saw it in the movie theater,And really all these songs are great...They make me feel like I never wanna grow up also...:)Those songs have that way that move you,Like make you sad....And man...I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!:)PETER PAN ALL THE WAY!Wahooo!:)

Customer Reviews:
vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23
LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.
Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').
The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.
We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!
There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).

Compilation release.......2005-11-24
This release is a remastering of the two previous releases: Sweet Power of Song and On Wings of Song. Both original CDs are still available if you hunt for them. The original releases do have the texts included in the booklets (lamented by a previous reviewer of this compilation release). The lack of text is not a problem for me. I just listen to these incredible singers. I don't need to read what they are singing.
If you even slightly enjoy listening to the soprano voice, you will love these two luscious singers. Soprano duets are among my favorite classical music selections. Lott's clear, strong voice rings with authority and joy. Murray provides perfect harmony and occasional counterpoint.
I prefer the first disk (Sweet Power of Song) because it is more balanced and seems to represent the sopranos' favorite selections. However, disk 2 (On Wings of Song) has Rossini's delightful Cat Duet which is worth the price of both CDs as performed by this amazing duo.
Whether you buy this compilation set or the individual releases, I promise that you will love them and keep them near your player all the time.
Text Translations Please!.......2002-01-11
Musically, I give this double CD set 5 stars. I love the warm soprano of Felicity Lott and the beautiful mezzo of Ann Murray. They always are a pleasure to listen to, each on their own, and together, they make music that is, more than simply beautiful and technically impeccable, but truly a joy to listen to. It adds so much to musical enjoyment to understand what the lyrics are, however, so rather than buying this double CD set, for which the text translations have been stingily omitted by the label, I would recommend buying each of them separately. I bought this CD set not realizing that one of the two CDS is one that I had bought previously, and been enjoying for many years. It is entitled "On Wings of Song" and the texts and the translations are all included. I highly recommend buying it. I don't know under what title the other CD might have been released. If you are so fluent in foreign languages that the lack of translation does not bother you, then I would highly recommend this CD.

Infinite Felicity - Not.......2006-02-05
One of the greatest disappointments I have ever had in my life was listening to the recordings of Purcell's music that were made in the 1990s by Robert "Everything He Touches Turns To Dross" King. The physical impact of the recordings was comparable to a strand of wet spaghetti and it takes real talent in a conductor to make James Bowman sound so ordinary so much of the time. Particular scorn must be reserved for the casting of Michael George. (What is the difference between Michael George and George Michael ? Answer: George Michael has a voice that is pleasing to listen to.) Michael George has a tolerable light baritone provided the dynamic never gets above mezzo-forte and provided the coloratura never gets out of first gear. (It can be heard to good effect on Hyperion's recordings of Bruckner's and Faure's Requiems.) However, John Gosling, Purcell's miraculous basso profundo of the seventeenth century, he most emphatically is *not*. If David Thomas (the only man for the job) was unavailable then the recordings should not have been attempted.
The problem is that these dreadful recordings have Hyperion's imprimature and so this divine music will probably have to endure a purgatorial wait of at least a generation for a new complete recording.
I'm sorry to see that King has finished with Vivaldi's sacred music. This is a pity, because the amount of damage he can do in this field is limited; let's face it people, once you've got the Four Seasons and the Glorias you've got everything.
A new project for King is clearly required along the same lines. May I suggest a complete recording of the Telemann cantatas ? Then we can all sleep peacefully in our beds until the time comes to sleep peacefully in our graves.
Important Purcell Project.......2001-06-12
It was by this project that I made the acquaintance of Henry Purcell and his music. He just knocked me flat. How I love the elegance, gaiety and wistfulness (to name but a few characteristics) of his music. For this first Purcellian project (started in the mid eighties), director Robert King assembled a truly crack team of Early music soloists and musicians, he also provided extensive commentary in the booklet and wrote a biography on Purcell. This venture entailed the recording of the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs (composed for Royalty and festive occassions).
Only in the famous Hail Bright Cecilia and Come Ye sons of art away, the Choir of New College, Oxford lends it's support otherwise the soloists themselves perform the choral parts. Which certainly contributes to the intimacy of the recording. Robert King is certainly right in saying that the texts of these pieces aren't great poetry, but the music is divine (the usual flatttering of kings and nobles)! King and his team deliver an outstanding and important contribution to the Purcell discography.
My favourites among the soloists were: Gillian Fisher, James Bowman, Michael Chance, Michael George, Charles Daniels, Rogers Covey-Crump and John Mark Ainsley. Charles Daniels pulls this project indeed spendidly off with his solo Arise my muse. I loved the exquisite countertenor duets like Hail gracious Gloriana or Sound the trumpet and always Michael George's bass parts. But that's just a selection of the riches presented here. Afterwards Robert King went on to record the complete secular solo- and sacred music of Purcell.
valuable and enjoyable.......2000-01-12
This set will delight any lover of Purcell. Ideally, you will want all 8 CD's; but if you must pick and choose, get at least Vols 1, 2 & 8 (these contain, between them, Welcome to all the pleasures, Hail Bright Cecilia and Come ye sons of art). Volume 1, entitled Royal and Ceremonial Odes, was probably recorded before King knew for sure that his idea of producing the complete chamber vocal works of Purcell would be commercially viable. Hence, the separate title and no mention of the volumes still to come. But by the time the second volume was made, the future of the project was already mapped out. The purpose of the project was to record all 24 surviving odes and welcome songs of Purcell. (This project was later followed by a similar undertaking: an 11-CD set of all surviving Purcell's anthems and services - of those, get at least vols 3 & 9). By the time King was entrusted with this massive and ambitious project, he was still in his twenties. But King knew what he was doing. His assumption of the project was backed by years of research. He even prepared his own performing editions of the works he intended to record, and furnished sleeve notes for each of the CD's in his Purcell series (Later, he also wrote a book about the composer). King's notes are insightful, although his choice of vocabulary is somewhat peculiar and repetitive. The musical results are wonderful, by all accounts. I am especially pleased that King was able to assemble such an outstanding cast of singers. For me, the highlights of the series include: Arise my muse from vol 1 (an alto solo sung by Charles Daniels); Bowman's 'Tis Nature's Voice from vol 2 (although my all time favorite version of this air is on the Herreweghe); alto-high tenor duet Let Caesar and Urania live from vol 3 (you should hear Bowman and Covey-Crump blend in this one!); The sparrow and the gentle dove from vol 4 (Charles Daniels); alto-high tenor duet Sweetness of nature from vol 6 (Bowman and Padmore); an ornate tenor duet And now when the renowned Nassau from vol 7 (Daniels and Covey-Crump); and the glorious high tenor solo O how blest is the isle from vol 8 (Padmore).
