Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

New Age music, ambient electronica, and spiritualized hip-hop received their first major, K-Tel-like treatment in 1996 when Virgin Records assembled Pure Moods. The "As Seen on TV" compilation quickly became a hot seller, and it would be nice to think that its popularity has as much to do with the music as the marketing. To be sure, Pure Moods offers genre hits aplenty: from Enya's "Orinoco Flow" to "Sadness" from Enigma; from a dance mix of the "X-Files Theme" to edits of vintage electronica from Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells) and Jean Michele Jarre (Oxygene). Beyond other selections of beat-enhanced chants and a few other popular themes ("The Mission," "Twin Peaks"), the album, refreshingly, also includes a few selections noteworthy only for their originality and quality. A three-track section near end of the 70-minute disk features affecting soft African chants from Geoffrey Oryema, followed by "My Wife with Champagne Shoulders," a dollop of regal, faintly ethereal romanticism from master film scorer Mark Isham, then a robust piano workout, "The Promise" from Michael Nyman (The Piano). Great compilation of electronic music for it's time. A lot of depth to it, you don't get to the 5th or 6th song and start getting into what seems like "filler".

I loved the music on here they are so peacful like the xfiles theme tubular bells with the overy babbling melody and crockettes theme which was the best song with no vocals and they saved the best for last LILY WAS HERE with excellent non vocaling music with lite accoustic guitars and perfect saxaphone playing with a touch of soothing melody. My mothers into spiritual things mostly and she loves this pure moods mix of peacful music. I use to listen to this while I sleep I loved it but now I sleep with the fan on because I love to hear the sound of the fan while I sleep.

New Age as a child? Really?.......2007-05-17

I must have been around six or seven when I came across this cd through the TV ads. I couldn't buy it myself but I loved the music. It wasn't until I was much older and borrowed it from the library did I remember how much I loved this. I uploaded some of the songs onto my computer, only because I had downloaded some of them already. I started listening to the other pure moods and it's still the same.

Flowing music between ambient, new age, and soft electronica it pulls up its own forrest of emotion as it pulls you closer into the center of yourself. YOu find those pieces of you again that you haven't discovered. A must have for anyone wanting to get in touch with themselves, or just don't know how to relax after a hard day at work.

I must admit, I've always felt kind of silly for owning this CD. Yet it's got wonderful songs on it. Each one sets a tone that carries you throughout. I've had this CD for years and I still pull it out and listen to it.

I use to listen to this cd over and over when I was younger. Happen to run across it in a packed away box. Been listening to it for two months now, love it just as much as when I first gotten it. Matter of fact, after my teenager heard it, he had to have a copy for himself. Lucky, amazon sells it. He loves it just as much as I do.... surely a favorite.

I did checked out the other pure mood cds and they are ok, a few good songs on them but I dont think it can compare to the very first one put together. Every song is amazing.

If you like music with a little color, not to strong, not to weak, but very lovely to hear...recommend this one.

In some ways, Styx was America's answer to Queen. The Chicago quintet never ascended to the ranks of rock-and-roll royalty, as did their English counterparts, nor are they held in as high a regard today. Nevertheless, Styx fulfilled a Midwestern American hunger for high-flown fantasy typified on Pieces of Eight with songs like Dennis DeYoung and James Young's "I'm Okay" and "Lords of the Rings," with their elaborate arrangements, soaring vocal harmonies, and lyrical pretensions. In quite another direction, guitarist Tommy Shaw writes about basic human needs and working-class values in "Blue Collar Man," while his song "Sing for the Day" is a pleasant air, and "Renegade" a hard-charging rocker. Styx may have seemed somewhat schizophrenic on Pieces of Eight but their legions of fans diminished not a whit, making the album the band's second multiplatinum effort in a row, following The Grand Illusion. --Daniel Durchholz

Number Eight.......2007-07-04

Styx would really have to blow it out of the water with their eighth release, especially after the unprecedented success of 'The Grand Illusion'. This album very much succeeded. Once again, not a bad song on this album and really a companion to 'The Grand Illusion'. You have to have both. The only song that I thought never really fit and I owned it on vinyl when it first came out was 'Lord of the Rings'. I don't know why. It was the last song on side A of the album and always seemed out of place. Just my opinion, but I always wondered what the heck it was doing on this album and not on a tribute to Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' instead. Maybe, that's what the band was doing, I'm not sure. Radio staples like 'Blue Collar Man' and 'Renegade' keep the band going and keep the pressure building to churn out hits. The sappy ballads are yet to come from DeYoung; they're just not here yet. A must have for any Styx fan, old or new.

You Can't Go Wrong.......2007-04-10

I'm a teen, and I've been into Styx for a while now. I have 4 of their albums, including their "Greatest Hits" album. Fact is, this is my favorite album of theirs. You will find no bad songs on this album. The soft, upbeat songs like "Pieces of Eight", "I'm O.K.", and "Lords of the Ring" are contradicted perfectly with the heavy songs like "Blue Collar Man", "Queen of Spades", and "Renegade" (which is one of my favorite songs of all time). John Panozzo, Dennis DeYoung, and Tommy Shaw all especially shine on here. I wish teens my age liked this instead of emo music. You just can't go wrong with this album. If you are a Styx fan, BUY IT!!! If you're starting with Styx, you might want to try something else first. But whatever you do, you just can't go wrong buying Pieces of Eight.

Just started collecting Styx albums.Although I have been a big fan of theirs for years.Have always listened to the greatest Hits."Pieces of Eight" is a great one to start with. Standouts are: "Great White Hope","I'M Okay","Sing For The Day","Lords of The Ring","Blue Collar Man", and "Renegade",my fave all-time Styx song. Styx will never be the same without DeYoung and Shaw.
Get it if you love Styx!!!!!

last great album.......2007-01-10

In many ways "Pieces of Eight" is the finest of all Styx albums. Overall it even outdoes "The Grand Illusion" which many consider to be Styx's finest work. The tracks 6-10 are in my opinion the best side of Styx ever. Tommy Shaw tears it up on both "Blue Collar Man" as well as "Renegade" and Deyoung has two of his most underrated tracks on the album in "Queen of Spades" and "Pieces of Eight." This album has a great mix of melody and crackling guitar which is sadly missing on "Cornerstone" which sounds like it could not have come from the same decade never mind a year later! Other later releases would include the so-so "Paradise Theater" which was at least a step up from Cornerstone, and the dreadful "Killroy was Here" when Deyoung and his ballad fettish put the nails in the coffin but good for these guys. I guess this is what makes this album a great one. A final time when the band ran on all cylinders and were at the peak of their creativity. Not many bands stay that way for long. Styx was no exception.

Two sides of styx .......2006-12-27

This is an awesome album that really shows off tommy shaws knack for writing and performing. This albums also has alot of JY's strong hard rock vocals and pleasantly shows off DeYoung powerful keyboard abilities. I highly reccomend this album for styx fans like myself.

This CD is so much fun. I wish I had seen this group while living in New Orleans with my kids. Both of my boys, ages 2 and 4, request this music when we are in the car. The song FARM is my favorite! I love listening to it as well. It appeals to kids and adults (especially those of us in our 30's).

I have written a review for each of the Imagination Movers products and this one is no different.

It seems my girls are growing up with the Imagination Movers. This CD seems geared for older children(4-12?) with songs about losing teeth, playing tag and friends moving away.

I listened to the song about Katrina and checked their website. I read how they lost everything.

My girls love this CD and are glad they have some new music. We bought the DVD but that had music from their two CDs except "Junk."

Still waiting for them to come to Oregon. Please Movers (if you read this) come to the capital of Oregon - Salem!

Abbado has created an excellent anthology of Mendelssohn's symphonic output - rich, lush and balanced. A+

Great set.......2007-05-18

By my calculations, this is the single best set of Mendelssohn symphonies out there today. Though better versions of the "Reformation," "Scottish," and "Italian" Symphonies exist in other disks, I still like the interpretations offered by Abbado and the LSO.

For the "Reformation", and "Italian" Symphonies, I'd recommend John Eliot Gardiner and the Vienna Philharmonic's DG set.

For the Scottish Symphony I'd go with Karajan's recording with the BPO (that CD also comes with the best "Hebrides Overture" recording available, and a pretty good "Italian Symphony" interpretation, too).

All of the overtures in this set are performed very well, both in technical execution and musical interpretation. The Hebrides (a work far ahead of its time), in particular, is a fine recording. So is "Overture 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." I really have grown fond of the "Ruy Blas" overture as well.

Another reviewer complained that the interpretations in this set are "too Classical." I think they are correct in saying the set is Classically performed, but I think that works with Mendelssohn, as he was "the Romantic Mozart."

Overall this is a great set, and a good way to become familiar with the music of Felix Mendelssohn, or build your Mendelssohn library.

MENDELSSOHN: 5 Symphonies/7 Overtures (LSO/Claudio Abbado) DG 471 467-2.......2006-07-13

Unlike many all-digital compilations offered by one orchestra and conductor, this collection of Mendelssohn favorites is outstanding in performance and interpretation throughout. Maestro Abbado shows a genuine affection for the composer and his genius by the sequence of selections on each disc, and I find no weak performances anywhere in this remarkable recording.

Great Concept but Not So Great Execution!.......2006-06-14

First, the good: Great box design for packaging, great booklet in various languages describing the history of all the performed works, great value for money, excellent representation of the great Mendelssohn's best works.

Now, the bad: the problem with compilations like this is that the material tends to have been recorded at different times and places and frequently by different personnel on various recording equipment of varying quality. What this means is that some tracks within each disc sound much better then others and even whole discs come in varying sound qualities.

Fortunately, the best disc, disc one starts out very well with the great first symphony and ends with the composer's best Overtures and the quality of the sound recording is very good. Then we get to disc 2 and the sound quality can only be described as abysmal. The difference in the sound is like night and day when compared with the first disc. The third disc sounds much better but is still not as good as the first disc while the last disc comes somewhere in between the second and third.

There's no doubting the quality of the performances though by Claudio Abbado and the LSO and of course the choice of material but too bad about the inconsistency of the sound quality from track to track and from disc to disc.

Still, the 3 stars are for the good points listed above and for the great disc 1.

More of Mendelssohn to Love.......2005-11-08

I had heard all the music on here before interpreted by other conductors and other symphonies but Claudio Abbado proved to be the most efficient for me. Thanks to the world's leading classical music label- Deutsche Grammophone -we are able to hear a complete set of Mendelssohn's symphonies and overtures with the acclaimed London Symphony in a beautiful and surprisingly afforadable album. For music that is this good, I was surprised that it wasn't a little more expensive. But good, right ? Just more of Mendelssohn to love. On this album: his symphonies 1-5, Scherzo in G Minor from the Octet for Strings, the Overture to A Midsumer Night's Dream incidental music and Hebrides Overture. These are the most famous Mendelssohn creations. His Fourth Symphony is the "Italian" symphony, with lyrical, bouncy rhythms and classical harmony. The Midsummer Night's Dream overture encompasses romanticism at its peak, with sprightly strings representing the mischievous fairies that figure prominently in the Shakespeare comedy. The Hebrides Overture is evocative of wintery landscapes and sea breezes, a fine example of a tone poem and musical painting at its best. Its haunting melody is instantly recongizable. Abbado is clearly suited for this kind of music and it's refreshing to see him stray from the usual Italian repertoire he is most famous for. Still, inescapably, his Italian soul stands out but this gives this music more color, more volume and lyricism than what can often succumb to stale, cold English interpretations like Andre Previn's conducting. No offense to Mr. Previn, who has produced some brilliant music.

What's most surprising about the Pure Moods series is not that it is so popular, but that the music on it actually represents some of the best New Age and modern instrumental music, rather than scraping the barrel. For every piece of Enya pop froth--like her "Only If," which opens the album--there is a deep and impassioned exploration like Sheila Chandra's virtually a cappella "Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean." Yanni's bombastic "On Sacred Ground" is balanced by Moby's soulful trance groove, "Porcelain." Sometimes those juxtapositions don't work out well. The overwrought romanticism of pianist David Lanz's "Cristofori's Dream" can only suffer being sandwiched between the soul-searing vocals of Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers (Massive/DB Mix)" and the Geoffrey Oryema/Brian Eno hymn, "Land of Anaka." With more than a quarter of the album drawn from the 1980s, there are some influential early gems here for new listeners, including Kitaro's wistful "Silk Road" and Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." --John Diliberto

Pure Moods Vol I, I think is still the best

Anyone who's actually reading an online review of a Pure Moods album has to be, in my most humble of opinions, an established fan of the franchise, and I'm no exception: I LOVE Pure Moods. I have all 5 installments and Christmas Moods.

But on Pure Moods III, there is one song that simply does not belong: "Silk Road" by Kitaro. That has to be the most annoying, shrill, plodding sequence of sounds I've ever come across. I only listen to that track about 33% of the time. (I sporadically listen to it, just to see if I can hear it differently that time.) I would like to make a burn of this CD that does not contain that song.

Everything else rocks my socks.

If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.

One of the best!.......2006-05-17

Pure Moods volume 3 is probably the second best in the series after the original Pure Moods. With mainstays such as Yanni and Enigma how can you go wrong? Powerful tracks like "Deliver Me" from Sarah Brightman and Peter Gabriel's "Games without Frontiers" highlight this release. As with the rest of the Pure Moods series this is very good and worthy of repeat listenings. Other great CD's include Imogen Heap, any Digital Moodz CD and Enigma's 1st CD or LSD.

One of the Best in the New Age Genre.......2005-12-02

Pure Moods: Vol. 3 is one of my favorite New Age CDs, which is such beautiful mix of sublime music from various artists. Suprisingly, the CD both energizes and calms.

Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel has such a satisfying, mellow groove, yet it seems to take the spirit straight to higher plains. It's not only ear candy, but enhances altered states of consciousness.

On Sacred Ground is one of my favorite Yanni songs, and it's on here, too! All I can say is "major goosebumps." It's like being in the Universal Cathedral of Spirit and having God sing to you.

Diva Sarah Brightman adds her smooth soprano voice to the track called Deliver Me. It has a pop groove, but weaved into the background is the etheric keyboards that gives it that flavor that appeals to both the ear and the spirit. When I listen to this song, I feel my heart chakra just blow wide open, receiving the love that the Universe provides in abundance.

Dela Dela by Sacred Spirit starts off with a deep flute reminiscent of a Native American ceremony. Although a pop beat ensues, the song is still undergirded by the strings, which makes it feel orchestral, but very tribal. The tribal aspects is punctuated by what sounds like Native American chanting, but then the female lead takes over once again. It's a song that penetrates, daring you to look away...but you just can't. Then it segues back into the strings, which sucks you right back in to the groove.

The only song I'm not particularly crazy about is Enya's Only If; it's a good song, but so much of Enya's music is overplayed, especially for movie trailers and soundtracks.

This CD contains Christofori's Dream (the 1988 piano masterpiece) as well as songs by Moby, Brian Eno, Enigma, and others, for a total of 16 songs.

How Eminem was able to assemble so many credible emcees of today and yesteryear (Jay-Z, Rakim) to endorse his Holly'hood coming out party is anyone's guess. What is clear, however, is that (dare we say it) the Shady One might be growing up. On "Lose Yourself" Em abandons his callous, hardcore posturing to write thoughtful hood-centric coming-of-age lyrics that would make Melle Mel proud. On "Battle," Gang Starr's Guru tears through a sick beat from rap's most prolific producer, DJ Premier. Sadly, Nas wastes more valuable studio time dissing Jay-Z (ho hum) on "You Wanna Be Me." Interestingly, once you get past the living-legend love-in and peep the skills from Em's lesser-known Shady Records roster of underground wordsmiths, such as 50 Cent ("Wanksta") or Obie Trice ("Adrenaline Rush"), you might urge Em to consider giving up his thespian pursuits to become a full-time record executive. Not even the baffling inclusion of Macy Gray's humdrum "Time of Your Life" can sink this project. --Dalton Higgins

Another GREAT CD by Eminem, a must have if you like his music.

A Collection of Excellent Rap.......2006-08-25

Back when I was still determining what music genre to call my own I developed an interest in rap. After a while I got my first real rap album, 8 Mile. It still remains one of my favourite albums. Every song (excluding 2, you'll know which ones I'm talking about) has been burnt in my memory. I'll break it down for you...

1. LOSE YOURSELF-Eminem: (5/5)- What better way to start an album than with the first rap song to win the Academy Award for Best Song. This is, without a doubt, one of Eminem's best ever, and don't forget that he produced it too. This will always be a rap classic, need I say more?

2. LOVE ME-Eminem ft. Obie Trice & 50 Cent: (4.5/5)- Maybe it doesn't sport the best content, but I can't get enough of this one. Em's production is excellent, the light vocal chorus contrasts very well with the hard rap. All three artists are hungry and they deliver well.

3. 8 MILE-Eminem: (4/5)- Another good production by Eminem, at 6:00 minutes it's a little long, but recreates that dirty Detroit street feeling from the movie.

4. ADRENALINE RUSH-Obie Trice: (4/5)- Obie definitely captures your attention with this one, nowhere else will you here muthaf***** spit so many times in one chorus. Perhaps the most over-the-top on this album, but I love it.

5. PLACES TO GO-50 Cent: (4/5)- Now that we're well acquainted with Trice, it's 50's turn to introduce himself. This is a good one, especially considering it's 50 Cent. He doesn't sound bored in this one, and it's yet another great production from Eminem.

6. RAP GAME-D12: (4.5/5)- This one sports all six members of D12, with a dope chorus from 50 Cent and chilling joint-production between Eminem and Denaun Porter (Kon Artis). This is D12's hip-hop 101, and the raps compliment the music well.

7. 8 MILES AND RUNNIN'-Jay-Z ft. Freeway: (3.5/5)- Good production by Eminem. Less then spectacular performance by Jay-Z and Freeway but not bad by no means. Jay-Z reflects on his career and Freeway's getting his started, which was what 8 Mile was about.

8. SPIT SHINE-Xzibit: (4/5)- Solid performance by X to the Z with solid production from Porter. Xzibit takes a chance to reflect on his rap career as well and provide some advice for others.

9. TIME OF MY LIFE-Macy Gray: (0.5/5)- I have no idea why this is here, other than it adds to the theme of the album as a whole. Basically, you'll listen to is once, ask "why's that on there?" and never listen to it again.

10. U WANNA BE ME-Nas: (3.5/5)- I'm impressed that Nas is on here, but this diss track is definitely not his best work. However, still a good song produced by Nas.

11. WANKSTA-50 Cent: (3.5/5)- Nice one mixed by Dr. Dre. 50 Cent is already picking fights with Ja Rule, I agree with 50, Ja is a wanksta.

12. WASTING MY TIME-Boomkat: (0.5/5)- Well...it lives up to its name. I just pretend this was never here, when you copy the CD on your computer you can just leave this and Gray's out and you'll forget it was even there. This album still holds very strong with 14 tracks.

13. R.A.K.I.M.-Rakim: (4.5/5)- It's an honour to have Rakim on this album since he influenced rap so greatly. Ra takes this chance to put down what he stands for, and certainly takes advantage of the rock hard beat produced by Denaun Porter and mixed by Dr. Dre.

14. THAT'S MY N**** FO' REAL-Young Zee: (3/5)- Probably the weakest track on here (pretending that it's a 14 track CD), it uses a nice collaboration of guitars, but Young Zee isn't trying hard enough. It's still not bad, but had Zee done better, he might at least have an album by now.

15. BATTLE-Gang Starr: (4/5)- Another one of the hip-hop icon appearances that make this album a classic. Battles were also a big part of 8 Mile. This track uses heavy base coupled with record scratching and in-your-face raps that make this another solid track.

16. RABBIT RUN-Eminem: (5/5)- A 3:12 minute song with no chorus, so what makes this a five star track? Eminem is simply UNLEASHED on this one! It's as if he's focusing all his frustration and pent up rage and vents it all in these precious 3 minutes. Aided by an ominous Eminem production with a slight clock ticking in the background, you can feel all of the raw emotion in this song that is hard to find anywhere else.

So there you have it. If you want a tight collaboration of new and old school artists, this is the album for you. The only thing that could improve this album would be to get rid of the 2 degenerate songs and get a couple tracks by Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Notorious Big or DMX. But lets not get greedy, for $13.88 I find it impressive enough that Em assembled Xzibit, Nas, Gang Starr, Rakim and introduced us to Obie Trice & 50 Cent.

8 Mile.......2006-07-12

Seeing I am a big fan of Eminem I had to get this soundtrack. It has the new single Lose Yourself and other songs by Eminem + lots of others by other artists. It has the song "8 Mile" the movie title and "Rabbit Run" a great lyrical song. Only two of these songs (Lose Yourself and 8 Mile) were actually played in the movie but the rest of them were good to make up a whole album of good rap material. You should also get "More Music From 8 Mile" which has all the songs played in the film, with songs by 2pac, Mobb Deep, Notorious BIG, Outkast, Naughty By Nature and more all pretty good. On the soundtrack Lose Yourself would have to be my favourite song. Lose Yourself is actually one of my favourite of all Eminem songs with great lyrical verses etc. However i'm also a fan of 50 Cent and D12 so their songs I am a fan of aswell. Good Eminem

The Unsinkable Eminem.......2006-05-02

Eminem has proven once again that he is unsinkable. With a brilliant ensamble here he also has proven to be a suitable producer as well, boasting a label with talent like 50 Cent and Obie Trice, both of which have blown up now, but at the time of this release they were small potatoes. The album track list reads like a whos who of the best in the rap industry, everyone from Nas to Jay-Z to Xzibit, all of whom lay down decent tracks, but the shining star is none other than Slim Shady himself, with more than a few killer cuts like the blistering anthem 'Lose Yourself' which stands alone as Shady's most glorious moment. D-12, the Dirty Dozen who up until now have ceased to impress me actually hold there own on 'Rap Game' while 50 serves up a luke-warm track dissing none other than Ja-Rule on 'Wanksta' but he makes good for it with 'Places to Go' while Obie Trice stands out on 'Adrenaline Rush' and makes it obvious why he's been signed to Em's label. I do want to point out that while I don't know why Macy Gray was included on the roster, to answer a question from one reviewer, Boomkat is here because the lead singer Taryn Manning was in the film and as a favor to help boost her career Eminem gave her a track...that's why she's here, although she doesn't quite fit the bill. The best track here is the closing track 'Rabbit Run' where Eminem freestyles a track with no hook, just straight in you face 'look at me now' type lyrics that grab the listener and let them know what this album, what this movie and what Eminem, the man, is all about. Great album and great boost for the unsinkable Eminem!

Eminem - 8 Mile Soundtrack.......2006-04-16

A good soundtrack put together by Eminem. All great songs, except the ones with 50 Cent, :-). Since this has to do with D-12, I'd like to give a R.I.P to Proof, youll always be remembered. If you liked the movie 8 Mile, then I know for sure that youll like this sound track. Songs by Eminem, 50 Cent, Obie Trice, Gang Starr, Nas, D-12 etc. You cant go wrong with it. There is a few weak tracks and ill explain which ones those are. But this cd is definately worth 4 stars, just not 5. "Time Of Your Life" and "Wasting My Time" shouldnt have been on there, because they do not go along with the soundtrack AT ALL, but all good. Check this joint out!!

More potpourri than unified high concept, the fourth installment in the Pure Moods series nevertheless provides an interesting collage of acts associated with techno, ambient, alt-pop, and New Age genres. For some listeners, that means the transition from the rhythmic mystical-ethereal vibe of the first four tracks (from Enigma, Mythos, Delerium, and Sarah McLachlan and a splendid piece from Balligomingo) to a trilogy from New Age romanticists ( Secret Garden, Yanni, and pianist Jim Brickman) may seem a little disjointed. Ditto for the segue from George Winston's impressionistic 1980 solo piano piece, "Sea," to a Steve Reich-like minisymphony from Moby). And the concluding Afro-Celt Sound System track, a spirited, mandolin-driven piece with Peter Gabriel on vocals, is a stylistic island unto itself. Still, most fans of easy-listening contemporary music (particularly the adventurous ones) should find this an agreeable assortment of music from artists who infuse their craft with stronger-than-usual spiritual and emotional subtexts. --Terry Wood

Another Great Edition in a Great Series........2007-03-31

You got to hand it to Virgin Records. The PURE MOODS sreies of discs has been extremely sucsessful. They have been able to allow mood music gain a very wide audience without being too Way Out New Age or too commercial. This is the fourth disc in the series and it scores big like the others ( although #2 is my favourite). This disc has eighteen tracks, and a lot of them are under four minutes in length. But that does not mean they are filler.

A lot of reviewers gripe that the series is losing its edge and is catering to public appeal. Any compilation will never satisfy everybody. Criticisms range from "heard these songs before" to "too much piano" to "the same old artists". Remember this is music to put you in a certain mood of relaxation or peace or whatever. It is not to be taken too seriously. I for one enjoy having this music playing whether I am resting, working or enjoying company with friends.

There are some stunning tracks. I love the first four songs which set a great mood. I know SILENCE by Delerium and Sarah McLachlan is on many chillout albums but it is still an amazing performance and her vocal is overwhelming! If I do have a mild criticism of the album, it is that from Track 5 onwards the music does seem stripped down apart from one or two exceptions. Maybe a different playing order would have helped. Tracks 5-9 are pleasant to listen to but do tend to be similar in arrangement and tempo. Track 10 livens things up with Yann Tiersen's LA VALSE d'AMELIE but it is a short track. The Moby track on the other hand is too long and monotonous and sems very out of place here. The next track, however is a gem. Rachel Portman's theme from Chocolat is very beautiful and delicate. This and SILENCE are the two tracks I listen to the most. The album does sag until near the end. McLachlan's ANGEL is a little dull. Seems like it has been on the radio a lot but I do not listen to radio so it is new to me. B-Tribe's version of SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR is just wrong. Coming from Ireland, I have heard so many wonderful versions of this song that could have been included. This track has a vocal that seems to drag the whole song down and the music seems to merge different musical elements without sucsess. THIS LOVE and RIVER OF STARS could be the same song. However the former is too long. Thankfully the last track lifts the spirits. WHEN YOU'RE FALLING has the Afro-Celt Soundsystem perfoming with guest vocalist Peter Gabriel and it adds a much needed oomph to close the album. This great song had the worst possible luck in succeeding because the very original video had to be pulled soon after it was released in August 2001 on account of the horrific events on 9/11. I will not go into any detail but you will find the video on You Tube and you will understand why it is rarely shown after watching it.

"Apparently the only mood that matters is one of pensive melancholy. Nearly every track on this addition to the series is set in a minor key. Some are played solo, like George Winston's new age relic 'Sea.' Some are crammed with odd instrumentation, as in the briefly startling last section of Yann Tiersen's 'La Valse d'Amélie.' Some have entire orchestras sawing away. There are ambitious works like Moby's 'God Moving Over the Face of the Waters,' whose attempts to marry grandeur and minimalism are somewhat undercut by the monotony of a cymbal sample repeated too predictably. There are vocals, the best being the late Eva Cassidy's breathtaking treatment of Sting's 'Fields of Gold.' And there are yawners, such as Yanni's 'One Man's Dream,' which he may, in fact, have recorded while asleep, or 'This Love,' sung by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins over a groove that suggests the tread of a drugged somnambulist, and Govi's 'Garden of Eden,' which sounds way too much like 'Chim Chim Cheree' to take seriously. And yet, all of it creates the same gray impression -- which, of course, is the point, in which case credit must be paid to those who selected and sequenced these performances. The latest and best Pure Moods CD.......2005-07-16

I am enjoying all of the Pure Moods CD's 1 to III and looked forward to getting album when it finally was released. This CD continues the superb unrelenting new age/tribal fest that in this CD is exemplified with some beautiful golden oldie songs like Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold' that is a legendary song to lay down to and relax. Delerium's 'Silence' featuring the enchanting supple voice of Sarah McLachlan is wonderful. She also sings her hit song 'Angel' that would be a fitting burial song at a funeral. Enigma's 'Shadows In Silence' was my pick of the album, a ambient instrumental that relaxes you immediately. This is a must for fans of new age music who like a splash of many artists on 1 CD.

This is a great, great CD. It brought back so many good memories of when I was a young kid. It has the best of Chuck's songs that we all love. I play it in my car and in the house all the time.

A TRUE ICON OF THE ROCK N' ROLL ERA!!!!.......2007-06-17

This compilation of Chuck Berry's greatest hits is exactly that!! They're all here!! First issued in 1982, I thought I had missed my opportunity to buy this great collection. (It disappeared from the marketplace for a long time.) Then, 'lo and behold, I decided to check out AMAZON.COM last year and found it!! This CD is a Chuck Berry fan's goldmine. Mr. Berry is now 80 years young and will always be remembered as a great songwriter, great guitarist, and great performer. His 2000 Kennedy Honors were and are well-deserved!! Rock on, Chuck!!!!

This IS rock n roll........2007-02-13

Yep. This is it, folks. Just about everything that we love and cherish about rock 'n' roll can be found right here, floating around somewhere in these 28 tracks. This is pure, uncut, grease-covered, primal, rip-roaring energy, compressed onto a single disk. This is why we breathe.

Chuck Berry, you see, was rock incarnate; everything from his trashy, teen-baiting, inuendo-rific lyrics, to the manic energy of his voice and the amp-busting insanity of his guitar playing, explified the style. Songs like "Maybelline," "School Days," "No Particular Place To Go," and the classic "Johnny B. Goode" demonstrate the bash-it-out brilliance of Berry's music, while "Around and Around," Reelin' and Rockin'," "Little Queenie," and others exemplify the joys of American rock ulture.

And the Great 28 is an ideal introduction to the man's music- it sums up his career in one lean, mean disc, hitting quite a few of his finest performances. Plus, used copies are wonderfully inexpensive. In short, you need this disc more than you need food. Get it right away!

Superceded by more recent inexpensive collections, but still a class.......2006-06-06

In October of 2006 Chuck Berry will be 80 years old. Of the founders of rock `n' roll, he is today the one whose honor and esteem is most out of whack with his actual contributions. By any standards, Chuck Berry is one of the founding titans of rock. Musically, he contributed more than any other of the original inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elvis put rock `n' roll on the map, but Chuck is the one who drew it. Before Bob Dylan and the rash of great rock `n' roll song writers to spring up in the wake of Beatlemania, Chuck Berry was hands down the finest rock songwriter, with the lone exception of his equal Buddy Holly. It is only a slight over implication to state that most rock since Berry has been a variant of his original adaptation of rhythm and blues. And lyrically Berry was the most gifted lyricist before the advent of Bob Dylan. Of all the rock and roll performers, Berry was the easiest to understand when he sang, precisely pronouncing every word and for a very good reason: they were good words. Indeed, his diction was so superb that his earliest listeners refused to believe that he was a black man; they were convinced he was white. Chuck Berry has long been criticized for his lack of involvement in the Civil Rights movement and for reinforcing some negative images of black males, but by presenting himself as an undeniably intelligent and gifted black at a time when many whites were denying that blacks were as intelligent was itself an important contribution. Besides, working as a black crossover artist he was sometimes able to get his own back by subtle messaging. We all know, for instance, that in "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" he wasn't really talking about eye color. My hope is that for his birthday Berry will be recognized for what he was: the equal of anyone in making rock the popular musical form it became.

Apart from Berry's musical contributions, which were formidable, he brought a sense of playful theatricality that was key in defining early on that rock `n' roll, whatever else it was, was fun. Many of the early rock `n' rollers were great, great showmen in a way that few today aspire to be. Most contemporary performers rely on light shows, gimmicks, and props for their shows, but several early performers were precisely that: performers. To this day few guitarists have been as much fun to watch as Berry, not just during his legendary duck walks, but in a myriad of minor antics onstage.

But most of all, Chuck Berry has established a legacy of great, great songs. Most people know that the lone rock `n' roll song put on Voyager's data disc for any extraterrestrial who happens upon it was none other than Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Perhaps one day it will be as big a hit in Alpha Centauri as it has been on earth. What many today may not know is just how much very great music he produced. In fact, his string of hits outstrips nearly any of his contemporaries other than Elvis. His notorious stint in prison probably kept him from charting a few more hits (that he transported an underage girl across state lines is undeniable, but it is hard today to realize how vigorously he was prosecuted by St. Louis authorities and he certainly seems innocent of incitation to prostitution charges), but he eventually recovered from his ordeal to generate a second run of hits in the sixties.

Luckily, though in my and others' opinion Berry is not today given the credit he deserves for his major role in creating rock `n' roll, he has been exceedingly well served by a host of absolutely first rate anthologies. What I would like to do here is map out the five Chuck Berry collections I would most recommend. Each has its virtues and none any vices and it would be very hard to go wrong with any of them. I do think a couple of choices are better than others. Here are the main Chuck Berry collections available today:

CHESS BOX--If price is no consideration and you want almost all of the great music that Chuck Berry, this is unquestionably the one to get. The 3-CD set collects over 70 songs and has every one of the songs that the vast majority of music fans will have heard, all the way to his Christmas hit "Run Rudolph Run." There are a few cuts that are less than essential, but no current collection gives such a great view of his work as a whole, except for the complete collection of his Chess work, but in my opinion it collects too much that is of at most secondary interest.

ANTHOLOGY--Chess released this superb 2-CD culling from the larger CHESS BOX. Though less than half the price of the box, it collects over two-thirds of the songs, though without the Christmas songs that I frankly find endearing. But if you are willing to live without "Run Rudolph Run," this has just about all the Chuck Berry that most fans could crave.

GOLD--This is the big bargain of Chuck Berry anthologies. It contains all the major hits and familiar songs--though, again, without "Run Rudolph Run," which for some reason is omitted from almost all hits collections--and several nice extras as well. Though its 50 songs are slightly different than the one from the ANTHOLOGY, the heart of both collections is the same. If you don't own any Chuck Berry and are not sure that you want to spring the bucks for the CHESS BOX, this is probably the safest best. Lots of Chuck Berry for not very much money.

THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION--Well, no, this isn't definitive, but this newest Chuck Berry is arguably the finest single-disc edition. But here is the problem: The GOLD collection is only a buck more and contains 20 more songs. Plus, one of the 30 songs on this disc is the dreadful gimmick song "My Ding-A-Ling," a slightly ribald and not very good song that was Berry's last hit in the early seventies. My own belief is that shorter anthologies are improved by its exclusion.

THE GREAT TWENTY-EIGHT--This is back in print after being unavailable for a long time. Unlike THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, this is pretty much definitive. Most anthologies basically take the songs off this disc and then add to it. It is canonical in a way that none of the other discs is. Nonetheless, while I think it deserves five stars simply for the role it has played in introducing fans to Berry and for its historical importance, I think it has been surpassed by other collections. Also, the sound on the later discs is better than what you will find on this disc. (Caveat: I own an earlier version of this disc, and it is not impossible that on its re-release the remastered versions of the recordings have been utilized.) Still, for a long, long time this was the Chuck Berry disc to get.

So, if I were buying my first Chuck Berry disc and couldn't afford the CHESS BOX, which one would I go for? I would probably go with the GOLD collection. It is cheap, contains a heap of songs, and has decent sound quality. Then, if I were sufficiently moved to the point where I wanted more, I would go for the CHESS BOX. That really is the best one to get, but there are some really inexpensive compromises that one can make and still get a lot of music by one of the towering figures in rock `n' roll.

Must Have for all neo/proto Rockabilly Fans.......2005-11-22

Lots of rock stars consider this must have, but that's not why you should get this. Get this because you can hear for yourself what swing/boogie woogie warped into by the 1950's. Berry plays a sloppy style of Charlie Christian guitar overdosed with double stops on top of simple blues based songs. He is a Slim Gaillard for the rock and roll set. While short on jazz eloquence, Berry is long on spirit and shtick, weaving simplistic tales of teenage angst directed at school, social status, good times and romantic coming of age. Havana Moon may be the most underrated track.

Despite global warming, Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is more popular than ever. But it still seems strange that Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica ensemble--a group that continues to stun us with riveting performances of lesser-heard works--would tackle the tried-and-true baroque masterpiece. Luckily, Kremer inventively separates each Vivaldi season with a corresponding composition from Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons Suite, making for fascinating comparisons. Kremer's performances of the Vivaldi are remarkable, sounding solid and fresh. And like an infectious Broadway musical, Piazzolla's seasons always seem on the verge of a giddy dance number. Kremer really gets to show off on these tango-inspired pieces, but he's charming throughout. The programming probably won't make this your reference Four Seasons, but for those who love their Vivaldi in small doses or fans of Kremer's Tango Ballet disc, this is a must-have. --Jason Verlinde

I really know hardly anything about Argentinan music or Kremer, but I bought this album after I became enraptured with the spring and summer suites at a ballet. My local company created a piece inspired by the works of expatriate artist Amaranth Ehrenhalt and set to alternating Vivaldi and Piazzola selections. I was amazed by how Vivaldi's Seasons took on new life. Everything was vivid and fluid and meshed perfectly with the dance. I recommend this--you can truely feel the seasons alive in all of their glory.
BTW: Rio de la Plata means River of Silver.

Full Circle With Kremer's Eight Seasons.......2005-10-19

Gidon Kremer has been building himself quite the reputation as an interpreter of the music of the late and great Argentine musical polymath, Astor Piazzolla. Here he takes the very well-known Four Seasons of Vivaldi and stands them up to the Four Seasons of Piazzolla and the result is an aural delight.
Most who are reading this are probably curious about this CD for one of two reasons: either they are Vivaldi fans, or they are Piazzolla fans. But who says that being a fan of one has to exclude the other? After you listen to this, you are likely to become a fan of the music of both composers and of Gidon Kremer as well if you were not already.
Being a huge Piazzolla fan,I never tire of hearing different interpretations of one of his most important works. The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires may be born of tango, but it is much more than that. It is a masterful marriage of classical elements with those of tango. Piazzolla could do many things with music and what he has created with his Four Seasons is an electrifying blend that will stand the test of time.
And so here is Gidon Kremer with yet another skillful and faithful interpretation of the both the spirit and the letter of Astor Piazzolla's music, cleverly juxtaposed with that of one of the Old Masters. Kremer brings us full circle with his presentation of the Four Seasons sequences of both composers, beginning with Vivaldi's La Primavera (Spring) and after a musical journey through the year, ending with Primavera Portena (Buenos Aires Spring) so that we finish where we began.
Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica do a virtuoso job throughout. Though I am a partisan of the music of Piazzolla, I enjoy Kremer's interpretation of Vivaldi as well. If you know and love this music as I do, then Eight Seasons merits an esteemed slot in your CD collection.

Parts of this recording are so beautiful that when I listen while working, I have to pause what I am doing and close my eyes. I don't remember how I ended up buying this CD (it certainly wasn't planned), but I am so grateful.

My rabbit hates it though. When I listen to it at home, he stamps his feet. So I can only listen to it at work. :(

"Eight wonders".......2003-02-24

Gidon Kremer's musical explorations were very famous from the beginning and during the last few years he is gaining almost a "classical superstar" status. I was a little suspicious about those beautifully packaged CDs with sort of "trendy" and almost too interesting sounding titles for serious classical achievements. BUT!! I couldn't be more wrong. "After Mozart" or "Eight Seasons" seem to be some of the most inspiring recordings I've heard. While listening to "Eight Seasons" at "concert" levels in a privacy of my room, I felt "goose bumps" for several times and I had to laugh out of pleasure, thinking: this is SOOO good. Gidon Kremer and his "baltic fresh" Kremerata Baltica are pursuing and tacking the pure essence of music. Programming the mix of Piazzola and Vivaldi doesn't seem extraordinary anymore. It is pure music, pure joy. Technical bravura and excellent sound are only side things. Tango nuevo - widely popularized music form and one of the most (ab)used baroque masterpieces join as one in a fresh and artistically meaningful entity. What more can we wish for ?
Piazzola sounds energetic and powerful and Vivaldi the freshest out of numerous interpretetions. Mixed in an interesting sequence they form a new "Opus".

I also strongly recommend "After Mozart" with its mixture of contemporary music and timeless, for many "godlike" Mozart. A recording that makes him human and even more divine at the same time.

From the River Plate (Rio de la Plata)........2002-11-10

The River Plate, an akward translation from the spanish "Rio de la Plata", is the widest river on the world. It both separates and bonds Buenos Aires with Montevideo, capitals cities of Argentina and Uruguay respectively. If I could ask Billy Joel how would he name this river, I think that much alike his excellent album "River of Dreams", he would call it "River of Tango".
Yesterday night I attended Mr. Kremer and the Baltic Kamerata's performance, where in addition to Mahler's 10th Adaggio, they played these "eight seasons". I think that for Mr. Kremer and his ensemble, coming to play to South America and precisely to the birthplace of tango, could be a "tour the force".
Well, he & the Kamerata were magnificient, classy. He kept us on our feet, applauding, for more than fifteen minutes.
This CD has capture the thrilling of his live performances.It is the kind of recording that becomes a milestone in our "audio memory", as Mr. Karajan liked to say. Enjoy it.
