Album Description
Quality music at a great price, this collection features 20 tracks including 'How Deep Is The Ocean', 'No Strings', 'Puttin' On The Ritz' & 'Heatwave'. The Swingles have, unusually, incorporated electric keyboards, horns and drums into their usually acappella approach, resulting in some thoroughly modern interpretations of Berlin's classics. Castle Pulse. 2003.

Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04
I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

do yourself a favor..........2004-12-16
and buy this album. I don't like hardcore. I don't like pop-punk. I don't like emo. I don't really like any of the genre you could classify this group into. But... I LOVE THIS CD. Its melodic and perfectly harmonic for the music snobs out there, and its lyrically astoounding for the poets in all of us. Music and lyrics blend to form a sort of sonic alchemy and create a true listening experience. Don't close your eyes... you may get chills.
finch rocks dude.......2004-07-18
finch is by far one of my favorite bands, their riffs and double bass pedals add so much to perfection through silence... this song gives me chills.... the newer what it is to burn was so influential.... finch rocks, nate is awesome... end of story
1,000 stars and you're still falling..........2004-05-10
There isn't enough words to say about this band and this cd...I first heard Finch when their ep falling into place was released in 2001...ever since then...I've been so hooked I can't even hardly listen to any other band...with the post-hardcore guitar riffs from Alex Linares and Randy Strodemeyer (R2K), and the thumble bass lines from Derek, and the caffinated beats from Alex Pappas, and the insane range of vocals from Nate Barcalow, Finch is a band that no one can touch, Falling into Place was an amazing ep that made What it is to Burn one of the most anticipated albums of 2002...every song on this album sounds nothing like the one before or after each other. Finch is a band that everyone should atleast give a try...there is a song on this album for everyone...from opener "New Beginnings" to the Bonus track "What it is to Burn"...this album and band is my favorite in my whole collection of cd's...and I recommend it to anyone who listens to anything from Hardcore to pop-punk...
A most excellent CD.......2004-04-22
Seriously. This CD rules. I have it in my CD play in my car constantly. Go. Now. Buy it. Sell something if you have to, but buy this CD.
The best.......2004-03-24
I love Finch they are the best band i have ever heard. And This CD is what made me fall in love with them. I listen to at least one song from this CD everyday and have not gotten sick of it yet. Finch is the best band ever and if you don't believe me then you've never heard them. So go out and buy the CD then you'll see what I'm talking about

Customer Reviews:
A sort of aphrodisiac is "Pleasure Is Pain" .......2006-08-10
"What It Is" is the title of the new Ray Robinson album, which definitely is a must to hear. In fifteen tracks including the "Be The One remix" Ray Robinson is spreading fresh and creative hiphopsoul sounds from Toronto all over the globe. Some of the tracks even got a distinctive reggae soul flavour, a musical ingredient that made Toots and The Maytals celebrities.
When listening to the album "What It Is" you'll notice that Ray Robinson is here to stay. He and his producers know their classics as you will notice in songs like "Pleasure Is Pain" and "Patiently Waiting". If you know your classics you have a good foundation to keep building on. The producers are: Rayon Henry, Colin More, Kevin 'Kid Kut' Keith and Saukrates. You can hear Kit Kut and Saukrates participating on the track "Missed Your Chance".
All these musicians together have contributed to an excellent album. There are some nice features on this album as there is on the intro but especially the outro of "Good Times" which turns on into a Sam Cooke like acapella song honoring the children. A sort of aphrodisiac is "Pleasure Is Pain" which ends with fireworks which usually explodes high in the sky but not this time. Other sweet features you will not miss are the hornsection on "I'm Down" and the bridge in "Girlfriend". Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo and Al Green must have been part of Robinson's historic music collection. The knowledge of music history mixed with Ray Robinson's own talents and skills will reveal to you what is meant by "What It Is".

Customer Reviews:
Definitely worth it for Knopfler fanatics.......2002-08-27
Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it's a lot of money to pay for three songs (1st song is just an edit of album version). But for a Knopfler fanatic, the extra 3 songs are worth every penny. "Long Highway" is very moving, with great, soft singing. "Let's See You" has some Knopflerian bitterness: nothing as intense as "It Never Rains" but more biting and nuanced than "Money for Nothing" or "Heavy Fuel." "Camerado" is probably the highlight for me--a song about the West! It would have been SO PERFECT on the album, thematically linked to "Prairie Wedding," "Wanderlust," and others, but with a neat Western-rock feel. What a great song. As others have said, this CD single is a perfect companion piece to the album "Sailing to Philadelphia," along with the other CD single that has live versions of "Baloney Again" and "El Macho." Great stuff.
A Must For Any Knopfler Fan.......2001-02-23
Have always looked for CD singles from MK or DS, they often have great songs that were left off the original release. This CD is no exception, "Long Highway" is as good as anything on the "Sailing To Philly" CD, and worth the price of this CD alone. It has a great guitar solo that sounds a bit like the solo in "Are We In Trouble Now" from Golden Heart but with perhaps more of a Dire Straits feel.
"Let's See You" is more of a pop style MK song and very nice, "Camerado" is set in the upbeat style of "Gravy Train" that was on a CD single taped durring the "Golden Heart" sessions. It's also on a MK video taped live with many of the musicians that took part in the "Golden Heart" recordings. This CD single finishes the whole package of "Sailing To Pilly" and a great package it is.
The Best of Mark Knopfler singles.......2000-09-28
This single consist of four songs: "What It Is", "Long Highway", "Camerado" è "Let's See You". I think that "Camerado" is one of the best things Mark have written last 10 years. Anyone who buys this CD expecting the typical dire strats sound will be disappointed. This single sounds somewhere between Nashville, New Orleans and the Cambridge Folk Festival with Blues and Folk songs featuring. Knopflers best single since Dire Straits by a long way.
