Editorial Reviews
New Musical Express
Eight tracks of warm, guitar-driven understatement are here bookended by some abstracted rustles and dinky electric piano. Throughout, piles of guitars thrum like living things, crawling with the sort of little electronic scratches and whistles that would beg the tag Sparklehorse-lite, if that were not too glib for this record's inviting depths.

You really can't fake this stuff. If they did they did a really good job. Dimishing returns? Shut up. This is one of the most interesting albums I have heard so far this year. I read the poor reviews and I was like "what?"--A million hell YEAHS to this.

4 out of 5 stars An Exhausted Fixer.......2007-05-22

if you go into this record expecting the same record as "per second...every second," you'd be wrong. you have to go back to wheat's first two indie records, and then listen to the "per second" demos to understand what the band originally started out as.

this is a sonic experiment, similar to wilco's "yankee hotel foxtrot." it has its accessible songs, and it has its beautiful dissonance. "a prayer for kathy" is a slow builder, and it works towards something big.

i think it is a moving statment. so just listen.

2 out of 5 stars Diminishing returns.......2007-05-22

It seems to me that Wheat should have called it quits after parting with Sugar Free Records. Their two releases on that label, Medeiros and Hope And Adams, were beautiful, under-the-radar gems. Wheat then moved over to Aware Records and changed their sound up in an attempt to reach mainstream fans with the over-produced Per Second, Per Second. There were good songs on that CD, but they were buried under bells, whistles, and studio trickery. I honestly thought we'd heard the last of them with that release. I wish we had.

Well, Wheat is back. Their new release, Everyday I Said A Prayer, isn't entirely a bad CD. The sound is more like that on their Sugar Free Records releases. Unfortunately, Scott Levesque appears to have lost whatever singing ability he may have once had. The singing on Everyday I Said A Prayer is just flat-out bad. It sounds like he recorded vocal demo tracks to teach everyone the songs, but never went back to re-record them as work on the CD progressed. The vocals we're left with are off-key, cringe-worthy, and embarrassing.

I hope Wheat disbands before they drop a truly horrible release on their fans. Everyday I Said A Prayer comes close to being that release. If you are interested in this CD, I would highly recommend that you listen to some of the tracks prior to making your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-06

Robert De Cormier's remarkable arrangement and Marie Spar Dymit's and Lynette Johnson's pure vocals of "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" are well worth the price of the entire CD.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible..Worth 30 stars.......2007-05-16

The Dale Warland Singers are my benchmark by which I judge all other choirs. The uniformity of sound, blend, and precise entrances, uniformity are incredible - almost inhuman. Excluding the all male Chanticleer from the roster, this was the finest choir in America. Now that they have broken up, buy all of their CD's you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Superb singing matched with superb arrangements.......2004-07-03

A project like this one inevitably highlights the skill of arrangers, and Dale Warland has selected some of the most talented anywhere. Most of these selections will be familiar to listeners, but I doubt most people have heard, for example, "Red River Valley" in Carol Barnett's haunting version here, and ditto for her magnificent "Deep River."

The disc opens with a spectacular, panoramic "Shenandoah" that takes maximum advantage of the Dale Warland Singers' refined sound, and things only get better (if that's possible). Other favorites are a cheery, fizzing "Nelly Bly" and Mark Keller's strong reworking of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More."

Throughout the recording, the freshness of the arrangements is matched by the irresistible singing. This group is known for its outstanding performances and recordings, but this must be counted as one of their all-time best. The sound quality is terrific, capturing the gorgeous blend and precision of the group in a natural-sounding acoustic. Just stunning.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2003-07-03

I bought this CD after hearing a few of the recordings on our local NPR radio station. I was not disappointed in any of the selections. Very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Yet There Is No There Here.......2003-01-13

The Dale Warland Singers (DWS) are among the relatively few musical professionals, who by their aesthetic standards and demonstrated artistry, have taken the less traveled and narrow road to exemplary artistic excellence.

The sound quality and acoustics are excellently engineered in this 20-bit original recording. The most delicately blend and inflection of the singers' voice can be heard. This sheaf of choral works has once existed in real space and time in the kaleidoscopic folklife of past generations. In recording the "Blue Wheat", the 40-member DWS, the creme de la creme of professional choral ensembles, has elevated the common oral tradition of American folk music into a rarified choral art form a capella "in the style of the chapel."

If the soul of the DWS is a capella singing, then Warland and the arrangers are the wings of the same soul. Among the kapellmeisters whose arrangements have graced this folksong anthology are the late Norman Luboff and Roger Wagner. Also included in this album are contemporary arrangements by other esteemed composers: John Rutter (conductor of The Cambridge Singers), Carol Barnett (the DWS resident composer from 1992 to 2001), and Stephen Paulus.

Gertrude Stein is famous for saying of her childhood home, Oakland, California, "When you get there, there's no there there." Purportedly, Stein opined this city by the San Francisco Bay lacked a defining sense of place. Bel canto notwithstanding, the folk melodies of "Blue Wheat" invoke a longing for something no longer possible. The abyss between the America today and the its past is impossible to bridge. Already, we have yielded to the abstractness of political correctness. Our past is either neglected, actively destroyed, or selectively museumed. We do not live in an understood land and culture. There is no there here in the presence of this music. It is only the poignancy of the moment that these beautifully rendered tunes live in our mind. We have to accept this reality as part and parcel of our rootlessness.

If the Oakland Raiders do make it to and win the Superbowl in 2003, there is a there there for some in the football community, albeit fleeting.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2007-04-04

I love this cd, the king's singers are one of my favorite groups ever and this is one of my favorite cds of theirs.

5 out of 5 stars An old favorite.......2006-11-06

A mix of the traditional and the modern which is itself timeless. I bought the CD to replace my cassette which was lost in a theft. I've owned this album for over 20 years and it remains a must have.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite album of folksongs.......2002-05-26

I loved The Kings Singers since their debut album (now available on CD). This recording is one of many fine albums they have made. The musical arrangements are sensitive, and enhance the character of the simple tunes selected. Daryl Runswick and Gordon Langford, veteran Kings Singers arrangers, wrote several of them, but there is also a lovely arrangement of The Star of the County Down by Howard Goodall (who has written all the music for Rowan Atkinson's TV shows and the themes for Red Dwarf and The Vicar of Dibley).

I love every single track, but here are a few particularly interesting ones:
John Rutter's arrangement of Barbara Allen
Early One Morning, arranged by one of the group (Jeremy Jackman) Daryl Runswick's arrangements of O Waly, Waly and She Moved Through the Fair
Watching the White Wheat (sung in Welsh)

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This is King's Singers at their top.......2001-07-06

This is a performer's CD! I bought this CD in college, and it's still one of my treasured favorites for what it does: it captures the essence of near-flawless performance...diction, intonation, lyrical expression...the overall musically of this group is not enhanced by studio post-production. You get the same live as you get with this recording, and if you've done small ensemble work before, you'll love this recording. They even have 11 of these 16 songs in a songbook entitled "The King's Singers' Folk Songs" (Faber & Faber), with every note on the CD turned into spots on the page.

5 out of 5 stars This is perfection.......2000-10-26

The King's Singers are one of the best vocal ensembles - in every incarnation they've had. The tone changes with new members, but each regrouping presents itself and the music with integrity and intelligence. This compilation is one of their best. My personal bias is that this kind of music is their forte. British folk songs sung with grace and elegance and fun and great love. They have retained the historical tone of each piece while updating the harmonies. They pay respect to the past and cross the line just enough to make these old tunes interesting to 21st century ears. Star of the County Down, The Oak and the Ash, and Lamorna are three of my favorites. Though not as well known as some of the other songs, these are brilliant arrangements perfectly performed. This cd, along with Annie Laurie, is the ultimate in King's Singers recordings. Enjoy.

      Album Description

Whole Wheat Bread is from Duval County, Jacksonville, Florida. They are the nation's original Dirty South punk band! Like their forefathers Bad Brains, they are doing their part to redefine punk for a whole new generation. "PUNK LIFE" features 3 new original tracks plus 3 punk renditions of crunk classics by Lil Jon, Bonecrusher and Lil Skrappy. The boys did such an amazing job on the remakes, it's no wonder the King of Crunk himself, Lil Jon asked WWB to contribute music to his upcoming CD, "Crunk Rock".

      5 out of 5 stars wow! .......2006-02-20

This is an amazing record from start to end; outstanding songwriting, great textures & sounds, and overall, a great feel. I think it would be difficult NOT to love an album with the depth and warmth of this one.

Nothing wrong with this cd. Nothing great either. It's basically Creeper Lagoon.

5 out of 5 stars The best cd I own? Quite!.......2004-03-29

Growing up in my hometown of Taunton, MA I learned a few things. The most important, don't expect much from the local bands. Yet out of the clear, okay, mostly overcast skies, came Wheat. Rising from the ashes of Blair's Carriage with songs sounding unlike anything I'd ever heard outside of my dreams, I pinched myself hard. This can't be real. This can't be Taunton. My spirits were lifted and my faith restored. Ladies and gentlemen. This is the most beautiful album you will ever hear. At least once Aware re-releases it hopefully with a bonus track or eight.

3 out of 5 stars Wheat, everything including the husk.......2004-03-18

Remember in chemistry class when a liquid would slightly change it's colors? With the musical formula slightly changing with each song, that's the sense I get with this CD. 'Hope And Adams' is an interesting fusion of indie and roots rock along with neo-psychadelic twists. Overall there's a wispy smokey, almost reflective feeling to Wheat's music, with this uncanny ability to maintain it considering their wide range of influences. The first half seems to straddle adult-contemporary rock and the experimental country-tinged flavor of Wilco. The second half tends to explore a bit, going from the moody soundscapes of My Morning Jacket/The Eagles and unconventional marching rhythms, to Dandy Warhols-type power-pop and acoustic ballads. The lead vocals also seem to transform a bit, shifting from a predominantly Johnny Rzeznik croon to Wayne Coyne and Don Henley. Diverse as 'Hope And Adams' is, if there's a common thread that strings all the songs together, it's a bit of subtle The Flaming Lips trickery, from quirky studio sounds to strings, organs, and piano. A metamorphosis of song-writing, this album is really a pleasing listen, lush, with cohesive well-crafted songs.

5 out of 5 stars This album is, in one word, beauty........2003-11-19

Hope and Adams, Wheat's sophomore album, takes you back to a time where everything is beautiful. The intense musical interludes can make your heart skip a beat if you listen close enough.
This album is aimed at those looking for a mellower indie rock, kind of a Ben Folds-type with more emphasis on the rest of the band.
Check out this album- you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment after 1999's brilliant "Hope and Adams".......2007-07-04

I was, and still am, a huge fan of Wheat's 1999 album, "Hope and Adams". Comparisons at that time to Wilco, Paul Westerberg, Whiskeytown, etc, were all warranted and, as expected, the album has stood the test of time...
Four years later, we get "Per second, Per second, Per second... Every Second". My first impression after listening to the album was a sense of bewilderment at the obvious change of musical direction, evident from the outset on "I Met A Girl". This shallow faux pop style, prevalent throughout the whole album, devoid of any lyrical value, leads me to conclude one of two things; 1. They have a new songwriter and the good one left the band; or 2. the band as a whole decided that they should 'sell out' and write a pop album that would be appropriate for daytime radio. Either way, this album is 'Annus Horribilus' and should be avoided at all costs. I can only assume that their new album, "Everyday" is every bit as bad.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it........2007-05-04

I bought this CD without knowing anything about the band, never having heard any of Wheat's singles, or even having read a review. The cover looked interesting, and, since I didn't have much money to spend, the $11 price was appealing.

In short, their name perfectly describes their music: it is bland, completely unoriginal, and each song sounds like the next. The songs are formulaic, and the lyrics are mundane. Nothing is particularly catchy, or even worth being dubbed a "guilty pleasure." It's just a boring, nothing CD. If you want catchy, indie rock, listen to the New Pornographers or even Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. They actually deliver the fun melodies and spunk that Wheat promises, without sounding like everything else on the radio.

      5 out of 5 stars 6 out of 5 stars.......2006-12-29

"I Met a Girl" is the worst song on the cd. Any of the people who reviewed this cd and said that their radio single "I Met a Girl" is their only good song are the same people that love "sugar we're going down" (fall out boy). They are not listening to the album. They listen to the song they like and skip every other song.

I do not know a person that has listeneed to every single song and does not like this cd. I'm not lying.

This is a cd that is worth the money. If you don't like then sell it back to amazon. I think this cd is absolutely perfect.

5 out of 5 stars It took a while, but now I'm hooked.......2005-11-18

It took me a few listens before I fully appreciated this album. Sure, there are a few songs that grab you from the start (These are things, Some Days, World United Already), but the others are as good or better once you acquire the taste. If you haven't given this cd a few spins you're missing out. Wheat has a great pop sound with an unpredictable edge. It sounds familiar and fresh at the same time. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Dream Pop.......2005-01-12

'Per Second' epitomizes what pop music should be, but so rarely is: gorgeous. Wheat's fourth album is so beautiful and dreamy it hurts. If you want a few catchy, inspiring songs, this album has it in "I Met a Girl", "Life Still Applies", and the breath-taking "These Are Things". Or, if you want to fall asleep listening to the prettiest ethereal songs, try "This Rough Magic", "Hey, So Long", or "The Beginner". What makes Wheat so fantastic is their ability to take the elements of modern pop, which have decayed into repetitive and stale radio playlists, into something which sounds like all the perfect things in your life in a song. I love this album.

I first heard this CD on vinyl when I was a teenager. It was my introduction to the new age sound. I have not heard many other artists that can weave sounds together into a seamless fabric like Phil Keaggy.

By the way, Cheri Keaggy is not Phil's Daughter. She is married to his nephew.

      I am not Christian.
I am not a guitarist, though I am a professional musician.
      I am not a'Keaggyhead'...

But this is, easily one of the best collections of compositions I have ever heard. In particular, and I need to single this one out, 'March of the Clouds' is as perfect a collection of sounds a human being can put together. As a song, it has everything...ethereal imagery, slow gradual volume and tone. Again, it is....well it is my favorite song. I do not listen to New Age in particular - I am well rounded but - I heard this song about 10 years ago...and either a song touches you or it does not....this one reached in me and pulled something out...something only this song can. Buy it. Experience it.

5 out of 5 stars Keaggy at his best.......2003-07-28

This is my favorite album by Phil Keaggy. As everyone knows, Keaggy is an incredible guitarist, but this album displays his gift for composition and arrangement as well. The title cut is a masterpiece acoustic guitar composition. March of the Clouds takes the listener on an emotional musical journey through the skies and back to earth. While the album cover is reminiscent of the 80s Windham Hill look, the blending of acoustic and electric guitars with piano and synthsizers in this recording are uniquely Phil Keaggy's.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry to rain on this parade, but..........2002-09-24

after all those glowing reviews I was ready to be wowed. Well, Keaggy has "chops" (technique) up the yin-yang. Some of the cuts are even very nice and sweet. But for the most part, I found this album boring and VERY reminiscent of Wyndham Hill aimless, nearly tuneless, noodling, arpeggiating. I keep looking for a worthy successor to Robbie Basho (e.g. Falconer's Arm, Venus in Cancer... now included on "Bashovia"): a guitarist with depth of vision, melodic inventiveness and depth. When you find her or him, please let me know.

      5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal work.......2002-02-12

This CD is derivative of the whole instrumental Windham Hill mood that was popular during the late 1980's and Phil Keaggy tells us how it should have been done.

His guitar work is brilliant as usual but his arrangements on this album are pure beauty. My favorite piece, "I love you Lord," is simply the most beautiful instrumental praise music I have ever heard.

      3 out of 5 stars not ska...at all.......2007-01-20

Whole Wheat Bread is an okay band on cd. They play mediocre skate-punk for the most part, with a few rap songs. I'd recommend seein them live over getting the cd though, they are much more exciting live. One thing that bothers me as a ska fan is how many people tagged them as ska...and the kid who said everyone was skanking at the show. WWB is not by any stretch of the imagination a ska band. I'm pretty sure they don't have a single ska song. If you are planning on buying this cd I hope you realize that it's a punk cd, not ska at all.

I saw these guys earlier this year in Jacksonville (where they're from) when they where touring with Tsunami Bomb (whom I've seen numerous times) and ...some other band -I think Lawrence Arms-, and they owned. They cram so much influence in their shows/music its fantabulously orgasmic. How many bands can get CRUNK, own the crowd with a riff-tastic punk song, have freestyle rap battles between songs, and beat out Tsunami Bomb (sorry, Agent M) for best band of the night? ...not many. These guys are some of the freshest dudes out there.

      I love black guys.

I met this band in Florida during spring break and they are really cool guys. When they went on stage some people were confused and then the started playing and people were skanking everywhere. They and a fun band that will get you off your feet. I liked this cd but I would much rather see them live.

      Hope you enjoy

A slice of powerful punk -- and hidden hip-hop, too
      By Jim Abbott
      Orlando Sentinel Pop Music Critic

      January 14, 2005

**** Whole Wheat Bread, Minority Rules (Fighting Records): Jacksonville punk-pop trio Whole Wheat Bread is a formidable presence on stage, but that doesn't always guarantee a new band an impressive debut album.

Fortunately, the 11 songs on Minority Rules (in stores Jan. 25) explode with almost the same force as the band's live show. There's nothing particularly ambitious about the approach to these hard-hitting sonic bursts, which detonate in intervals of roughly two minutes each.

Yet singer-guitarist Nicholas Largen, drummer Joseph Largen (Nick's brother) and singer-bassist Aaron Abraham deliver the goods so solidly that innovation isn't required. Producer Darian Rundall, whose credits include work for Yellowcard, merely gets out of the way to provide an uncluttered landscape on tracks recorded at Redondo Beach and Cell Studios in Orlando.

Without needless studio distractions, the emphasis is wisely on the driving beat and exuberant vocals. "Old Man Samson," which the band will be promoting with a music video produced this week at Bar-BQ-Bar, illustrates the calling card: a raucous sing-along chorus and churning guitars that blaze along with relentless speed.

All the sheer double-time muscle of songs such as "Scar Your Lungs" is accented by occasional surprises: the twangy, almost country feel to the opening guitar in "Samson," the crisp guitar solo that introduces the call-and-response vocals in "Loud & Clear." Such touches -- more of them wouldn't hurt -- start to elevate the band from its obvious influences (Green Day comes immediately to mind).

But, wait a minute, what's this?

On three hidden tracks that close the album, WWB abruptly turns into a hip-hop group. The results are an interesting mixture of moody melodies, crackling live percussion and cocksure attitude that still sounds more like a band than a DJ.

Whether the band rocks or raps, Minority Rules shows that Whole Wheat Bread does it with considerable promise.

4 out of 5 stars Film Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Vol. 2.......2007-01-06

This CD features the score Vaughan Williams wrote for the 1941 British film 49th Parallel. The music is a series of musical portraits of various parts of the film. The film itself was an effort to bring to the United States the story of how Canada was helping the British war effort. The hope was that the United States would soon become an ally of Great Britain in its war against the Nazi's. While the music for the film has been preserved, there is no current DVD copy of the film for region 1. Turner Classic Movies shows the film from time to time.
