After Exile in Guyville turned Liz Phair into an indie-rock pinup queen, rock critics and lo-fi aficionados everywhere awaited her follow-up with bated breath. Instead of making Guyville II, Phair sidestepped expectations by delivering Whip-smart, an album that replaced the shoestring intimacy of her debut with more traditional song arrangements and (gasp!) professional-sounding production. Though it lacks anything as memorable (and quotable) as Guyville's "Fuck and Run," the record has some notable high points, including the acerbic "Chopsticks," the lovely ballad "Nashville," and the perfect pop single "Supernova." In short, Whip-smart isn't the tremendous artistic statement Guyville was, but it's far more accessible--and quite enjoyable on its own terms. --Dan Epstein
Customer Reviews:
stands the test of time.......2007-06-19
The song "Nashville" off this album still gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. Her voice overall sounds very cool on this album. "Whip Smart" is also a really fun track. I got this in late 1995 as a promo when I worked for a college paper and I still have it in my collection! It's probably the only CD that has survived that long, and I just downloaded it to my itunes -- no scratches, all these years later! thanks Liz! (cool album jacket too).
"And nobody sparkles like you...".......2006-03-26
I bought this album about three years ago and to this day whip-smart is still my favorite album. Liz Phair is a genius. Her song-writing is incredible, her voice a relentless pitbull, and her image, a true reniassance. All the songs I love, especially Nashville, Go West, and the album closer, May Queen.
A lot of people think she sold out with her later albums but hey a girl's gotta get paid. Exile in Guyville is considered her masterpiece, and i think it's a great album but for me, whip-smart is her masterpiece. Totally under-rated, this album has smart lyrics and great guitar playing. You can decide for yourself but Whip-smart is one cd that will never be used as a coaster.
Rockin' -- I dig it :).......2006-02-12
I find Liz's music to be good fun and entertaining. Since there are plenty of persons out there happy to be wordy about it, I'll keep this brief. Love it!
A More than Competent Follow-Up to an Indie Classic.......2005-09-27
Disciples of "Exile in Guyville" will agree with the four star rating, newcomers might say it's more of a 3.5 kinda party, but that's still not bad. In an interview, LP once cited a Pavement album as one of her faves. This is no wonder to me, since her first two albums mirrored the characteristics of her Matador contemporaries' first two albums as well. Both respective firsts were raw, instant classics with undeniable charm and unlimited potential. Both follow-ups realized that potential.
"Whip-Smart" shows that Liz's song writing abilities run deeper than which some may have given her credit. This album has it all: Austere melodies that dance on the fringe between polyphonic bliss and drab monotones (chopsticks most notably)but still stir up your insides. Pop-hooks that'll reel you in like a prized marlin (Supernova, Whip-Smart) and still manage to distinguish themselves from the garden variety which live on FM radio. And...all the smut you can handle. A LP tradition that's continued in rich fashion. You've gotta love her honesty if nothing else. This woman makes talking dirty sound smart.
Spanning a broad spectrum of musical landscapes, slick production (not too slick though), and anthemic vocal melodies, Whip-Smart leaves you wanting more, and wondering why Liz Phair never married Steve Malkmus (former Pavement frontman)
Liz is fair.......2005-09-04
An uneven album that features some very good songs among others that are rather mediocre. Standouts include "May Queen" and the hit single "Supernova."

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Flashy, Fun, and Flamboyant.......2007-05-31
The Circus March is unfortunately a style of music that is often ignored, yet can be one of the most difficult things to play. Musicians almost have to have a feel for it to achieve the desired effect. Each march contained herein captures both excitement, showmanship, and even a certain degree of comedy that is associated with this style. Listening to these brings back a by-gone era of bearded ladies, roller coasters, and kettle corn. If you play this regularly, you may even begin to smell the peanuts roasting....
stunning musical review.......2005-09-27
This is music I have not heard, or played, for years. Most impressive musicianship. And the tempos are unbelievable! For this size group, it is amazing--and nothing less would be expected.
I am a retired music teacher, and this brought me back to the times when I played in large marching bands, or smaller groups for the local rodeo, as a college student. Great excitement in listening, and being swept away to a time when I had less to worry about.
The music itself has a great affect on me, besides the impressive way in which it is delivered. Great sound. Great precision. Great music that just isn't played or used much anymore. How fun to relive those moments--especially the ones featuring the trombone.
Nice and lively!.......2004-04-28
I was specifically looking for music of the circus and this recording just blew me away. It is clean and well done -- technically speaking. The Eastman Wind Ensemble is spectacular! If you are looking for something that sounds like a circus band, this is NOT it. This is a very professional, high quality recording of some of the best march music ever composed.
Sounds even better than when I first heard it.......2004-03-01
When I first heard the last eleven marches on this recording; I heard them on tape, and I really enjoyed them, this was back in 1988 when I was in the seventh grade. When I moved in the winter of 1988, I lost that tape. I was very sad when I did, and it was not until the summer of 2002 that I saw this recording at amazon; 14 years later still great, and sounds even better on CD than it did on tape. This time was even better, because it has even more marches, in the old tape, it had what on this recording are tracks 17-28. Tracks 1-16 are equally good, this recording is of a great sentimental value for me...I hope you enjoy as much as I have 14 years later....
A staple.......2003-06-14
A great collection of marches not by Sousa conducting by none other than Fennell. You can't go wrong having this in your band CD collection.

Canuck Brass' Salute to the States.......2004-03-03
CBrass has for some years now been one of the premiere brass units in the world. Having seen them twice in person, they are true showmen and ambassadors for their country, their music and instruments.
Here is a CD that is needed in our time: a collection of patriotic, good ole' American music.
This is 4th of July clap your hands firework watching music at its best. In fact, that is exactly what listening to this collection does for me: it takes me to the excellent Greenfield Village at Henry Ford's annual 4th Fireworks Concert.
This is good stuff, well done by early CBrass.
Fun.......2002-01-29
The Canadian Brass never fail to please, and this CD really lives up to that reputation. Even with the added orchestra, the songs never get bogged down or unevenly weighted. This was one of the first CB CD's I bought several years ago, and still one of my favourites of theirs.
Fun.......2000-10-24
This cd is a lot of fun to listen to, mainly because of the entirely too impressive trumpet playing. While the quintet may be a bit trumpet heavy, it does not detract from music in this corny, showy style. It is a lot of fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it to those who love brass music.

Album Description
Hotly tipped Danish nu-rock band! Whip It On is basically a soundtrack album, a film noir storybook of eight solid tracks blazing with attitude. Digipak. Columbia. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Vibes are all it has going for it.......2006-04-08
You only need to look at the title of the song "Attack of the Ghost Riders" to know what you're in for. As that song title would suggest, this album has a campy, 50s teen slasher flick feel to it. You can almost see the supernatural antagonist riding off into the night on a motorcycle, looking to cause some chaos. Unfortunately, that vibe is all this album has going for it. Most of the songs sound the same, and almost all of them are skip-worrthy. Beat City is good, and Attack of the Ghost Riders is almost memorable, but you'll forget everything else the moment the stereo turns off. This band has good ideas, they just haven't completely developed them yet.
(Four and a half stars) Who knew three chord songs could be so much fun.......2006-03-29
Start with a heavy dose of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Psychocandy," sprinkle in some surf music and raunchy lyrics, and limit each song to just three chords (in the key of B-Minor) had you have "Whip It On" by the Raveonettes, a Danish duo consisting of Sune Rose Wagner and the ravishing Sharon Foo. It's pure and simple rock-and-roll with crunching reverb guitar, bass and drums, reminding me somewhat of the Ramones when they first started out. "Whip On It" is an E.P. really, in that it includes only eight songs which average less than three minutes each. But what a fun time it is, and it leaves one wishing for more.
My favorite song on the album is a four-way tie between "Attack of the Ghost Riders," "Do You Believe Her" (where Sharin repeats the word "Honey"), "Chains," and "Beat City." Right behind these are "Veronica Fever" and "Cops on our Tail." Sub-par, but still not bad, are "My Tornado" and "Bowels of the Beast." The Raveonettes are just alot of fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing them live in a small venue, which I can imagine would be like one big Frat party.
Irritating.......2006-03-26
This is an irritating CD for a couple of reasons. Many of the songs have what sounds like a pretty cool guitar riff, but it gets buried in all the muddy lo-fi noise. The songs are sung in an emotionless monotone with some effect that makes them sound disembodied. If one song were done this way, it might be effective, but the entire CD drones on, each song sounding pretty much like the previous one. I think there are some decent songs here that would be entertaining done by another band.
Incredibly catchy--Buddy Holly meets Sonic Youth.......2005-12-02
I'm not usually into musically simplistic three minute pop punk, but I can't get this EP out of my stereo. Yes, this duo does wears their influences on their sleaves, but it's incredibly catchy and well-written for what it is, so who cares? Plus, I think they display a wider range of influences than they get credit for. For example, as a longtime metalhead, I state with confidence that the tuned down riff on "Bowels of the Beast" is total Black Sabbath worship. And considering the title of the song, it's obviously meant to be. Also, "Cops on our Tail" seems very much to be referencing The Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian," itself rather retro, but one has to admit that channeling the '60's through the '80's is a brilliant move. I bought this CD for $1.99 at a used CD store and it may well be the best use of two bucks I've ever made.
A Challenging Concept Album.......2005-10-22
When listening to this album, I feel its images evoke a movie full of surfing, car chases, lonely walks through the desert, and raves, all filmed in a film noir style.
The Raveonettes, with their jangly, simplistic lo-fi chords seem to have been pulled straight out of rock-n-roll's nascent years. However, the album takes a darker spin. Not only are the lyrics of a more plaintive, depressive tone, but the monotonous minor key brings the tone down into rock's dank basement.
Critics cite the minor key as a weak point for the album, but what few understand is that this is a concept album, the concept being "I wonder what would happen if we wrote an entire album in a single key?" The answer is that you get an album that flows seamlessly from track to track, lulling you into a place where all that seems to matter anymore is the music.
Critics also claim that this band has absolutely no versatility, which seems true for this album. They should give "Pretty in Black" a spin, because it seems that after "Whip it On," the band decided to take a different turn and let all of their influences shine.
It's hard to name a star track from "Whip It On," but I think the story the album tells is best summed up in the final track, "Beat City." The raucous chords and melodious harmony line whip up the images that stick with me every time I listen to this album. Other favorites are "Veronica Fever," "Do You Believe Her," and "Bowels of the Beast."
Comparisons are drawn between The Raveonettes and The White Stripes. Both bands are guy-girl duos, but that's where the parallel seems to end. While WS lovers will enjoy this album, the sound is largely different from WS's sparse, laid-back melodies. Fans of Garbage will like the Raveonettes as lyricist Sune Rose Wagner may be seen as the second coming of Shirley Manson, and the brooding words are sometimes reminiscent of Garbage's ranting lyrics. Also, fans of Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Cheifs, Hot Hot Heat, the Bravery, and the Arcade Fire would be wise to give this album a spin.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

American Whip is the second album by the very good-looking couple Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale. This decadent "newgazer" pop is woozy, beautiful, and more than a little tongue in cheek, a pleasant surprise as almost every contemporary group you'll hear that displays inspiration from the British "shoegazer" movement of the 1980s totally blows. Joy Zipper has been criticized for being too referential and kitschy, but it's precisely their dark sense of humor and knowledge of perfect/ fuzzy pop of the past (MBV , Zombies , Stereolab , Association) that makes this the kind of record you want to fall in love to, at least sonically. The obvious single, "Christmas Song," is a sugary masterpiece of Symbolist post-pop: "I feel you most when I'm deep in madness/ I love you more than a thousand Christmases/ I want you more than any gift I can think of." The words are druggy but smart, and their overwhelmingly downer vibe is offset perfectly by the sunny California pop. The lyrics are the sole reason none of these songs have appeared in a Volkswagen commercial yet. --Mike McGonigal

Ahhhh.......2005-09-20
Some days there is just nothing more enjoyable than sitting in the open air - whether on a porch, or near a lake; it's just down right refreshing... Every once in a while, you might see something that provokes deep thought, or maybe a sweet smile... American Whip by the Joy Zippers brings that feeling to mind through the ears. Yes, an 'Ahhhh' to my ears & mind it is.
Whip smart.......2005-07-10
If the White Stripes got really, REALLY stoned, they might sound something like Joy Zipper.
This talented duo smothers any sign of a sophomore slump in "American Whip," with its lush mesh of sixties psychedelica and shoegazer pop. The resulting album is languid, expansive and dreamy, but laced with a dark edge that you won't find in any Zombies or Beach Boys album.
The delicately blurred "Sunstroke" slowly opens into a whimsical little love song: "I need you more than the rain in springtime/love you more than the open sea." It's an exceptionally sweet song, and it does lure you in. But don't expect all to be happiness and light -- despite the colorful, hazy sound, the songs can get pretty grim at times.
Examples: The swirling lo-fi pop number "Alzheimer's" is from the POV of an old woman with Alzheimer's Disease. "Why do I keep forgetting my name?/Maybe it's something I ate/What is this terrible thing coming over me?" Vincent Cafiso drones. Parent/child alienation. And odes to "Drugs" and magic mushrooms.
Despite their obvious debts to bands like Stereolab, Zombies and fuzzy psychpop, Joy Zipper doesn't sound specifically like anything but itself. The duo's hazy, mellow music just sweeps the listener off their feet, as it brings to mind visions of California sunshine, summer days, flowery fields... and lots of drugs.
Cafiso and his bandmate Tabitha Tindale share keyboard duty, weaving a thick electronic fog around Cafiso's slow-burning guitar riffs and mellow basslines. There are some guest musicians, mostly contributing violins to songs like "Dosed and Became Invisible," which has a strong string presence from beginning to end.
Cafiso and Tindale have wonderfully synchronised vocals -- he sounds stoned and melodic, she sounds ethereal. And they're suited to the smart lyrics: "I dosed and became invisible/A compilation of my dreams/Exploded in my sleep." The "Alzheimer's" song hedges on bad taste when Cafiso sings about Ivory soap, but the lack of humor saves it from seeming grossly insensitive.
Like a shoegazer Fiery Furnaces or a stoned White Stripes, Joy Zipper churns out beautifully foggy rock music. "American Whip" is definitely worth checking out.
sometimes you find it.......2005-06-23
This was way too strange. I heard 33x on XM's XMU station. I write down the group and song. I am unfamilar. I buy American Whip. I also buy the first album... with nary a listen at all. I think there are elements of Stereolab, Ivy, Flowchart, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, and maybe even that vocal standard of Juliana Hatfield from just a limited exposure to a single song. I knows what I like. I jump.
When I get the album American Whip, I am reading thru the liner notes.. so who is doing some of the mixing? None other than Kevin Shields... what the.... no wonder I like it. I wondered what he was doing since there is no other MBV album on any horizon since Loveless. The sound is unmistakable... you can hear that poppy vocal sound along with great guitar riffs and analog electronics.
To say the least, both albums are excellent. They are on continuous play. I purchased everything else I could find. That should tell you something.
Great CD and great live show!.......2005-06-03
I saw Joy Zipper play at the Avalon in Hollywood about a month ago and thought they were amazing. I had heard their album once before seeing the show and liked it, but now i'm just obsessesed with it. It's got that Beach Boy feel to it but with much darker lyrics. I highly recommend it!
albums of this quality are a rare commodity these days.......2005-03-09
Albums of this quality are a rare commodity these days and this goes especially for rock. The sound, though not ground breaking, is fairy uncomplicated, guitar-based psychedelia with some striking vocals. Not only are they fabulously produced to an arguably deeper emotional level than the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows," but they lyrically tackle some frankly dark and thought provoking subject matter. Aside from the obviously depression founded "33x," "Dosed And Became Invisible" relates one of the least glamorizing yet knowledgeable accounts of psilocybin mushroom use I've heard on record, and lord knows I've looked. One of the most spiritually educational drugs, and completely natural at that, theories even circulate about the symbiotic relationship we have with them, that is they could have been the black omen from "2001: A Space Odyssey" which jumpstarted our evolution and gave us such gifts as insight, religion, philosophy, and much more. It's no giggling hippy account but a contemplative celebration and subtle encouragement for this spectacular, naturally growing fungus. "Alzheimers" has to be the most powerful song here though with its gripping sample of an old woman trying to guess her own age and coming up about thirty years short to which the melancholic drone of Vincent Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale lends its most fitting atmosphere and brings much needed attention to a truly paralyzing and family stressing disorder propagated by chemicals and additives that governments and the industries that support them shroud in lies. Calling this a Rock album would be an insult to its integrity. This is a compelling work of emotional magnitude that should be taught from in schools.

Heirs to the White Stripes' new-garage throne, the Raveonettes have delivered a debut of enormous spirit and purpose. Only 21 minutes long, it's one of those rare albums that leave one aching for more. By deliberately setting limits (all songs are under three minutes long, are in B minor, feature three or fewer chords, and don't have high hats), the Danish duo--like the Cramps, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Suicide--give themselves run to go wild within narrow parameters. "Attack of the Ghost Riders" is thrillingly volatile rock & roll, overlaid with the shrieking of tortured machinery. "My Tornado" is a churning plea to a pitiless, glorious lover. Better still is the slow, grim "Bowels of the Beast," which sounds like the Cramps performing Black Sabbath, and the closing "Beat City," in which the sweet harmonies of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo tumble into a maelstrom of howling guitar. Whip It On is simple but amazingly energetic. --Dominic Wills

nice..........2003-07-27
This album is a strange one. After only hearing "Do You Believe Her", I immediately went out and purchased the cd.
After it was put into my cd player, it was like nothing I've heard before. I mean, sure, some would say it all sounds like one long song, but the beauty of the way this EP is put together is magnificent.
Each song has a haunting value about it.
All in all, it's just a fantastic listen, especially for those who dig the new old-rock-revival type thing. It has a bit of a 60's influence, and that makes it all the more enjoyable.
This is good stuff.
1 Star for each of the songs I liked.......2003-07-21
I bought this CD knowing what to expect: A mini album with very similar songs in the same tone. I was a little dissapointed after finally hearing it. Don't get me wrong, this is a very original group with a very distinctive sound and I respect any group who will go out and try something new, but this album really didn't move me. Hell, it didn't really even touch me. I bought it after hearing Attack of the Ghost Riders because it is a great and original song, but everything after, with the exception of Beat City, is quite dull. Beat City is a great song which actually gets this cd going. Unfortunately, that kick is at the very end of the cd. I really think they have the potential to make a great cd, they just need to make a longer cd with a little more diversity. I will give them credit in being original and for the two great songs on the cd.
"Whip It On".......2003-07-12
This album is magnificent, it's so simple it's brilliant. Like The White Stripes, The Ravonettes are a duo. Sune Rose Wagner & Sharin Foo, from Denmark, are now European breakthrough artists with the release of 'Whip It On'. Although none of the songs are over 3 minutes long, they satisfy the ears. That's one of their strange rules, that & all songs are recorded in B Minor.
All of the songs are good, but the ones that stand out would have to be "Attack of the Ghost Riders," "Do You Believe Her," "My Tornado," & "Beat City."
The sound of "Do you believe her" is incredibly sexy. In fact The whole entire album has a mysterious, haunting, & sexy sound. As long as the Ravonettes keep making albums like this, they'll be legends.
A promise.......2003-06-10
Distorted punk-pop-rock, with an eerie 50s-style cover and a small number of short, hard-hitting songs. Either it's a pretentious waste, or a glimpse of future excellent music -- for the Raveonettes' "Whip It On," it's a little hard to tell just what it is. Taken alone, "Whip" is a fairly interesting rock CD.
Starting with a piercing electronic screech, "Attack of the Ghost Riders" is a steady track, followed by the more flowing "Veronica Fever," the siren-filled "Cops on Our Tail," the heavy-thumping "Do You Believe Her," the rocking "My Tornado" with its haunting whispers, and a few others.
Comparisons to the White Stripes may be the wrong thing to listen to; the Raveonettes sound quite different from the Stripes. They don't have the flexibility or versatility; the songs are a lot more monotonous musically, as many of them seem alike. It's also very short -- only eight songs, and most of them are about three minutes or less.
Despite this, the music is fairly raw and dark, but broodingly danceable. The distorted, slightly vocals seem to blend in with the whirling guitar feedback, and the songwriting has the same dark quality as the music, sometimes well-written and sometimes just repetitive. ("Delinquent girl/and all her angels on death row") The words dwell on darkness, crime, Vegas lights, and catching rays off the sun.
The Raveonettes may be the next big thing, or they may not. "Whip It On" is a nice diversion but gives only some hints of what may be ahead for the Danish duo. A nice (if short) listen.
3.5 Stars, I won't mind whipping this into my cd player........2003-06-04
I credit The Raveonettes for help getting me into the Jesus and Mary Chain about a year ago. I bought this album for around say five dollars because I had heard a few mentionings of it plus it was just cheap. When I bought this album I liked it a lot, I thought it was a really great album. So I looked around for reviews and such for the album and I saw many comparisons to a band I had never heard of before called The Jesus and Mary Chain. So I downloaded their album Psychocandy and I was simply stunned, it soon became one of my favorite albums and it still is today. After hearing Psychocandy I realized how much The Raveonettes sounded like them, and not as good. So a lot of the greatness that was originally in Whip It On, even though I still thought it was a decent cd.
Now to talk about the actual songs. One thing that hurts this album because they are all strung together maybe too tightly. This creates a feeling that every song sounds the same. Most of the songs, well all the songs, have the great wall of soung reminiscent of shoegazer bands and pop songs. Unlike JAMC, The Raveonettes songs are more dance oriented and are similar to a new band called The Faint. I'd say the strongest tracks are My Tornado (that whisper is cool), Cops On Our Tail, and Bowels of the Beast. When I listened to this album I realized that it was plenty good in its own right, even though it borried much from other groups, but then again so do many bands. I suggest you buy this album if you don't want to dish out the twenty bucks for Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy.

A great five track sampling of Southern heavy metal.......2003-03-03
"My Daddy Can Whip Your Daddy" offers a great five track sampling of what the Southern heavy metal power house called Disciple has to offer. Each of the five tracks show off a different aspect of the band's sound, making the album good for long time metal fans or for those who are looking for just a taste of what folks are talking about.
I was surprised, in that the strong points of the album are not the classic hard metal tracks, but the more laid back songs in the middle of the set. The title track starts off with a great drum and bass line and belts it out fast and hard. Showing off the heavier element of the band, there are plenty of raw screaming vocals to fill the need. The band reminds us of their Southern roots with 'Pharisee', a rhythmic and heavy blues influences number.
The track that gets the repeats, though, is the laid back 'Fill My Shoes'. The guitar elements are still there, and combined with the down-tempo beat make a great emotional cry almost all of us can relate to, "I believe, help my unbelief". Coming right in at second winner on the album is 'Fill My Shoes'. Imagine the heaviest track from Souther Rock bands such as Black Crows or Third Day, raise the beat a notch, and you've got a great song. The CD wraps up with 'Easter Bunny', a track spoken more often than sung as it rails against the replacement of Jesus with the Easter Bunny and Santa Clause.
A good glimpse of a great band, the album offers a taste of good metal to tide you over for the main courses the band is renown for.

Elijah sings Rock and Roll.......2002-09-12
Every time I hear the song, My Daddy can Whip Your Daddy, I think of Elijah and the prophets of Baal. And everytime I hear this band, the words "singing prophet" always are planted firmly on my lips. Stylistically, these guys share their genre most closely with Galactic Cowboys. The lyrics to their songs are prophetic in nature (not futuristically speaking, but as vision about God's view of society in the present). Visions of Jeremiah, Elijah, and Paul the apostle come immediately to my mind when I hear them.
The songs here are great. Be sure to find a copy of the song, "Thousand Years" as it is one of the most powerful worship songs I've heard in years and the passion in it cannot be missed...This is music is not for the seeker sensitive - unless of course they are really seeking. ...
Rage Against the Machine meets Jesus!.......1999-10-13
Although this band does have a strong flavor of Rage against the Machine and Guns N' Roses and such, they also have their own style mixed in that rocks! The songs vary from the slow and groovy tones of 'Fill My Shoes' to the hard metal rock sound of 'Fall On Me'. This CD is absolutely worth buying, the only thing I don't like about it is that there are only 5 songs!
Buy it! You won't be disappointed........1999-07-26
What an amazing discovery..had never heard of these guys before reading the article in HM (July/Aug '99 issue). Bought this CD and now I have to go find their other two albums.
Heavy...love it! If you like Precious Death or Galactic Cowboys, you'll love these guys.
Lyrically awesome!
Keep on rockin'.
