Product Description
Part of the immense body of work of this ex-member of YES and THE STRAWBS is presented here. Rick WAKEMAN has frequently been described as a keyboard prodigy. After a spell as a session musician at the end of the Sixties (Notably working with David BOWIE, Cat STEVENS, T-REX and BLACK SABBATH), he reached the peak of his fame during the following decade, contending with Keith EMERSON for the title of "most skillful keyboardist". In 1973 he launched a solo career with an adaptation of the famous Jules VERNE story "Journey To The Center Of The Earth". "White Rock" was the soundtrack to the film of the same name, recorded in 1977. It was intended for the Winter Olympic Games. 1998 saw the release of "White Rock II", seven beautiful instrumental themes, still linked with athletic performance.

Customer Reviews:
Too cool for some.......2005-02-22
Julianne Baird is breathtakingly good at what she does: intelligent, stylistically convincing, technically brilliant ornamentation, in a sweet, phenomenally accurate voice. I love it. Those not accustomed to this sort of thing, though, may find it lacking emotional immediacy. Consider also Kathleen Battle with some of the same material: not that she's better, but the appeal is more directly sensual rather than intellectual.
Ethereal and Hauntingly Beautiful.......2003-11-05
How could you go wrong with the clear seraph voice of Julianne Baird accompanied by the delicate skill of Ronn McFarlane on the Lute. Not only is the talent exceptional but the composed works of Lute music divine.
You listen to each song and are carried away to time/place devoid of any worry let alone any task other than to listen to Julianne and Ronn execute perfection. You truely feel part of the Elizabethan Court listening to this CD it is both beautiful and dark simutaneously.
Another fabulous feature to this CD is the simplicity of the recording of only lute and vocals with no special effects. To retain the warmth and purity of the composition it was recorded on location in 'The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall' in Upstate New York and is one of the finest acoustical settings in the world. Unlike modern pop music Lute music as written needs no manipulation or adjustment in the studio if executed by skilled artists and musicians in an acoustical atmosphere and this recording does exactly that.
I highly recommend this CD of beautiful music. It truely will evoke deep feeling and emotion.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni
Customer Reviews:
excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12
Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.
To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24
Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.
A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.
My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.
A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11
The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.
It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.
Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.
OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15
Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.
Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17
This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"
Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.
It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

Here's a novel approach to Christmas music cooked up by the award-winning New Century Saxophone Quartet. Part chamber music holiday fest, part playful holiday pageantry, A New Century Christmas embraces klezmer, Latin, pop, classical, and improvisational music for an inventive, 19-song overview of Christmas from a handful of composers. Saxophonist Benjamin Boone turns "We Three Kings" into "We Four Kings"; Lenny Pickett, a notable veteran of the rock music world, illustrates with "Funkin' with the Bells" just how much fun one can have with musty old standards; and symphonic master David Ott recasts "O Little Town of Bethlehem" for sax. Not just for serious music lovers, this disc is fun and easy to recommend. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
That's only Four Saxophones?.......2002-01-01
"What orchestra is that playing?" my friend asked me one night when I had this CD in.
"Its the New Century Sax Quartet." I said.
"That's only Four Saxophones?" he asked in disbelief.
"Yes, that's right." I replied.
As with any sax ensemble the sound is so rich and full that it sounds like much more than only a few saxophones.
The music is quite varied... yet recognizable. It isn't a CD to sing along with, but makes excellent background music. The CD Liner notes have information about each composer.
I found it a little hard to balance the CD on a cheap set of speakers, but I'll blame the speakers and not the recording for that.
An excellent collection of music, I recommend it for any sax lover.

The addition of Robert Faub to the quartet has proved to be not only a stabilizing force, but also an opportunity for an influx of different influences. The NCSQ Christmas rep is unique in that not only is it excitingly new, but it is also quite varied. Included are deeply stirring chorale-like settings, hot jazz influenced arrangements, and an ironically Yiddish version of "God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen" with Mr. Stephenson effortlessly executing difficult voicing techniques on the soprano saxophone. This collection of arrangements showcases the individual players' accurate technical chops along with their ability to always blend and move together. Thank you Mr. Stephenson, Mr. Faub, Mr. Pollock, and Mr. Hubbard; and I look forward to hearing the next 3 albums.

Great Second Part.......2004-10-10
In 1976 Rick Wakeman was asked to compose the music for the official film of the Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck that same year.
The Score he produced revolutionized the way that music and sport were to combine and not only was the film a box office success, but the soundtrack album, WHITE ROCK, was a huge best seller reaching the top ten in the album charts in the UK and top twenty in numerous other countries around the world.
In 1997, Rick was contacted by Konrad Bartelski at R=Trans World International who was involved in the re-editing of four official Winter Olympic games films for television transmission later that year. One of them was the 1976 Winter Olympics from Innsbruck.
After evaluating the scores from the remaining three films, Konrad felt that as they were being edited anyway, thai was the perfect opportunity to have them re-scored, and so after lengthy discussion with Rick, new scores were produced for the edited films and the Reflections of Winter programmes were born.
The response to the music was so positive that Rick set about the task of rearranging and recording the various themes from Reflections of Winter, just a he had done back in 1976 with the Innsbruck film, and produced seven tracks of outstanding quality well worthy of the title of WHITE ROCK II

Excellent Shakespeare Compilation.......2001-09-27
This CD has it all: Shakespeare period music for mood and background music, Songs actually written into Shakespeare's plays and talent infused into every track. Every song is done well by talented musicians and vocalists and the selection is great. If you are looking for the songs you see featured in your favorite Shakespeare play and would like to hear them, or would like background music to play while you peruse "The Merry Wives of Windsor" or any other plays from that time period, I recommend this CD.
Evocative Shakespeare.......2000-08-31
To your joy you can find beautiful old english songs of he shakespeare era. Nice selection but incompleet. Recomended for those intrested in Shakesperean plays as well.

Customer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music and lyrics.......2004-08-17
I love this CD. When I first got it, I listened to it over and over ... especially the second half. Fine musicianship from the musicians and the singer, I think. I passed it to other baroque aficionados who were similarly delighted. Those not used to baroque instrumentation may think the songs all sound alike. I felt, however, that there was great emotional variety in these many lute songs. Beautiful.
Dissapointing.......2004-01-25
I recently purchased this cd and had high hopes for it, being a fan of such music. When I actually got to listen to it, I was quite dissapointed. All of the songs sound identical, the same voice, and the same tunes. The woman's voice on this CD got a bit annoying since it sounds as if she's singing with her gag reflex. All in all, I'm not very thrilled with this cd.
