C.C. Shows It All........2005-08-24
For some reason--she didn't put in enough time with Stan K., she didn't do 40 rehabs, she was too late in the cycle--Chris never seemed to get the attention that Anita and June did. She demonstrates her great voice and jazz sense here, a pure joy. And she can handle any tune.
Only okay.......2005-08-22
There is a reason Chris Connor does not figure more prominently in post-WW2 jazz; it's not her orchestra and it's certainly not her voice. It's her choice of material. There is not one memorable, singable track on this album. Do not pay full price for this CD: it's good for background music (cocktail parties, seductions, etc.) but not as something you would hum while making the bed...
my heart is yearning for Chris Connor.......2004-01-13
this was a surprise, introduced to Miss Connor via A Portrait of Chris my expectations were for something similar, and the second part of this two record set, Witchcraft, fell along those lines. But before that came I Miss You So, which felt more like being put under a spell of witchcraft. The first six songs are so softly smooth they put me in a tearful swoon, too beautiful to leave, a version of forever I would gladly sign up for. Chris picks up the tempo, I wish she hadn't, but there are some nice choices, truly we're in the presence of a remarkable talent. My desert island choice would have to be this lady, though choosing between Portrait and I Miss You SO would be difficult. See other reviews for this CD, erudite and right on the mark, terrific, enjoy
CHRIS CONNOR; SONG STYLIST EXTRAORDINAIRE.......2003-09-01
Chris Connor's I MISS YOU SO, and WITCHCRAFT, both released by Atlantic in the fifties and now re-released on a single disc on the Collectables label, contains 24 original tracks--that's two LPs, folks. Half as many would be worth the price. In spite of the bargain price, this is an excellent recording. Chris Connor couldn't offer anything less.
This collection is a great example of Chris Connor in her prime. Her voice, her phrasing, her styling are just so sweet. Her song choices have always been a little off the beaten path; not those that have been done, and overdone, by lesser talents. Every song she sings belongs to her.
Smooth as silk, she glides through "My Ideal," a wistful "Go `Way From My Window," "I Love You, Yes I Do." and the steamy "Past the Age of Innocence." An alto sax echoes the lonely note on "Time Out For Tears" and "Mixed Emotions." She swings "How Little We Know," stirs the blood with "I'll Never Be Free," and pulls out all the stops on "I Hear the Music."
On her swingy "My Heart Is So Full of You," the orchestral and choral work could have been toned down a bit, and in a few scattered places one wishes they'd back off, but it goes with the times. Some things that were standard, or even experimental, practices in the fifties have been improved or abandoned, thank goodness. Connor was strong enough at a very tender age to sing over the energetic Stan Kenton so she can handle these guys with one hand tied behind her. She doesn't let it distract her from her always-perfect performance. The smoky Connor voice and a wailing alto sax more than compensate. Anyway, with WITCHCRAFT, the big band takes over and things find a better balance. Just relax--it's not that bad--and let Chris Connor waft over your nerves like a cool breeze.
All these songs evoke that old feeling, but the CD version is a refreshing experience after watching in dismay the slow disintegration of those old collections of scratchy LPs, misplaced 45s, and stretched and broken tapes.
Excepting Diana Krall, Steve Tyrell, and a scant handful of others who did their homework--you know who they are--this album should be required study for those of the current crop of songsters who sometimes tire one with their over-enthusiastic styling. An afternoon spent with Chris Connor could show them how a serious musician does it.
In the vanguard of ladies of jazz, arm in arm with June Christy and Ella Fitzgerald and very few others, Chris Connor is still a vital force, and has stepped up to prove she can hold her place in line by continuing to release new albums. Her latest, "Everything I Love," is now available.
A great compilation, and a great bargain.........2003-07-18
Chris Connor was/is by far one of the greatest song stylists that ever came from the 1950's. Still active today, this compilation of her two successful albums, "I Miss You so" and "Witchcraft" showcase her great phrasing and sense of time. My only complaint about these recordings is the use of "voices", a popular 50's technique used in recordings of other artists such as Nina Simone (Nina Simone sings Duke Ellington) and Dinah Washington (Unforgettable). Occasionally, this choir of voices ruin an otherwise terrific track, i.e., "Mixed Emotions" from I Miss You So. Others on the cd are great, especially I Love You Yes I Do, Go 'Way From My Window, My Ideal, and I Miss You So. Likewise, the Witchcraft album has mostly standouts, including the title track, I Hear The Music Now, You Don't Know What Love Is, Just In Time, I'll Never Be Free...while I Miss You So is primarily a ballads album, Withcraft is a combination of slow songs and uptempo tunes, a testament to the fact that Connor was capable of swinging like Sinatra and belting like Peggy Lee, one of her contemporaries...Connor will be releasing a new album on 7/29/03 called Everything I Love, her 3rd on Highnote Records..the 1st two, Haunted Heart (2001) and I Walk With Music (2002) are worthwhile listening, proving that even in her 70's, Connor is a force to be reckoned with..

primal rock at it's best!.......2004-11-09
Front-man Arrington De Dionyso flaunts major rock 'n' roll chops on this, his finest release. The man is driven by primal motives that most of us have forgotten through the passing of time. He looks at the world of good and of evil, light and dark, Fire and water and screams, wails & rocks it out in an impressive display of vocalism. You really have to hear it to fully appreciate it. The cymbols/drums have a lo-fi tin can-like sound, with the exception of the bass drum, which is huge. The stand up bass is an excellent accompaniment and the manic Bass Clarinet almost mimics Arrington's manic vocals. I highly recommend this Old Time Relijun release in particular.
Check out "King of Nothing". That's my pick.
It's Terrifying/Beautiful/Terrible.......2004-03-11
I have always liked alternative music, but this isnt even alternative. It is a trio of musicians who make beautiful/terrible/horrifying noises at the same time. It is outrageous how 3 musicians can make something so terrifying yet beautiful. If you aren't fond of pointless music I dont suggest this for you, but if you want something truly different this is the album. Between his Yoko Ono impressions and his blaring bass clarinet solos Arrington De Dionyso is no ordinary musician. Also I enjoy how Aaron Hartman plays a stand up bass instead of a regular bass which i think sounds much better for their type of music, and Phil Elvrum's almost primitive sounding drums sound great with the music. Like I said if you want something different get this.
Old Time Relijun is crazy lo-fi rock..........2001-09-26
These are not traditional pop tunes, even by indie standards. The vocals are crazy-excellent (and occasionally Yoko Ono-esque (but don't let that scare you)), the music uses unconventional scales, the drums are killer primitive. The album has a raw, lo-fi sound; it reminds me of old-school Beck in that respect but with tons more energy. Musically, Old Time Relijun somewhat reminds me of The Residents, so if you're into that and don't mind a rougher sound, Witchcraft Rebellion is probably worth your cash.
I somehow like this..........2001-06-19
First of all it might be wise to point out that most people are going to find this stuff simply unlistenable, so it's advisable to download a couple of samples before buying the record...
Now back to the review: OLD relijun sound a bit like Birthday Party, only that they can't play their instruments, they merely strum them, producing out-of-tune, deranged loops of sounds. Arrington Dedionyso, OTR's mastermind, sings a bit like Black Francis which means that he babbles odd ravings all the time. Still, this sounds to me a bit like comedy-rock, with a lo-fi cabaret athmosphere. It surely isn't a great record but you may find it funny and enjoyable after awhile. I do!

Album Description
When Dave Chandler of Saint Vitus penned the doom anthem "Born Too Late", he could hardly guess at just how accurately this prophecy would come true, and how the embodiment of that sentiment would be birthed in the Swedish city of Orebro nearly two decades later, with the alchemical creation of WITCHCRAFT
. Despite his tender age, Witchcraft mastermind, Magnus Pelander has been an active member of the Swedish Doom scene for some time now, and initially started the band as a tribute to former 13th Floor Elevators legend Roky Erickson and vintage Doom rocker Bobby Liebling of cult legends Pentagram. In early 2003 the band, now completed by Jonas Arnesén - Drums, John Hoyles Guitar & Ola Henriksson Bass, began assembling vintage 60's & 70's recording equipment in a basement and started work, with producer Jens Henriksson, on their debut album. That album, 'Witchcraft', was instantly hailed as a classic by the international Rock press and quickly taken to the hearts of music fans everywhere. Opting for a clean, heavy sound quite unlike any other contemporary bands, the album swung effortlessly from orthodox doom to blues, folk and jazz whilst always remaining shrouded in the cloak of influence from some of the more obscure moments of the 70's cult rock underground. So, again enlisting the help of producer Jens Henriksson the band traveled to the pastoral English countryside in early 2005 to work on their follow up "Firewood". This time around, the overall feel of the record is brighter and fuller, but with a prevailing sense of melancholy which permeates the strident, heavy anthemic tracks like "If Wishes Were Horses" and "Wooden Cross (I Can't Wake The Dead)" and the more reflective, epic opuses "I See A Man" and "Sorrow Evoker". Whilst their self titled album made a sizeable dent in the minds of the doom cult fanatics, this new slab will go a long way to establishing them beyond the narrow parameters of the underground to fertile pastures anew. Rise Above. 2006

Brilliant.......2006-08-03
this cd is amazing. and i'm not one to just throw that word around as many do. the guitars are cleaned up a little bit. very smoothly overdiven tones, classic rock riffs and a really tight, tasteful rhythm section. the vocals are passionate and very original. the songs flow very well. alot of blazing guitar work, superb lead solos echoing back to the sounds of Cream and the mighty Sabbath. vintage pagan rock at it's finest. this cd rules.
Whistling In The Darkness.......2005-10-23
Every form, offshoot and genre of rock and roll has been rehashed a thousand times over. It's not the notes and arrangements as much as it is what the individual brings to them. Call it chemistry or magic. It's in the heart, not the hands. In part, that's why I've never understood the ballyhooed criticism of "they sound like__________[fill in the blank]and are therefore a ___________knock-off" leveled by many who themselves listen to and laud music that is equally derivative. Everything, including all music, is derivative, hence the point becomes: does the band bring any magic to it?
Witchcraft makes no bones about their retro circa early 70s Black Sabbath, Pentagram[AKA Shades of Darkness]vibe. Sure, there's the unmistakable hue of Budgie and Tull, yet they bring something unique to it.
"No bones" means they don't make any obvious detractions that a lot of bands would in order to avoid unseemly "categorization." The sound of Witchcraft breaks out the double-bubble bong, brings on the heavy, weaves a mystic spell of vintage sounds, Sabbathsaurus riffs and hooks. Good for them. And good for those who groove on that sound because they really know how to deliver the goods.
Admittedly, I don't think their follow up, "Firewood," is quite as remarkable as their s/t, but man, that's nitpicking! It's still heads above most of the 'new' stuff. If you like Witchcraft, make sure to check out[also from Switzerland]the reasonably priced s/t from BURNING SAVIOURS![where's the vinyl?!] Thus far, Amazon isn't carrying it, so you can find it at the All That's Heavy online store, or Brainticket Records. You will not be disappointed!
PROBABLY SUPERIOR...........2005-07-26
....to their self-titled debut, but it took me several spins to come to that conclusion.
at first,i was disappointed by the less-heavy guitar tone.it's still distorted & heavy, but just not as raw to my ears.
also,i can hear many more influences than the Sabbath and Tull vibes caught on the first disc - one can hear the ghosts of Bang,Cream,Pentagram(hidden bonus cover at end of disc)and Blue Cheer.
i find this to be more than a one-dimensional 70's rip off band,as some have branded them.their is some great well written music here, steering clear of parody or pretense
A crisper second effort........2005-07-22
Their debut last year was made from their demos- the back cover credits even say "Recorded in a basement"! For their second album Witchcraft hired a "real" producer. Now we know what they really sound like. "Firewood" sounds like a Jazzier version of early 70s Doom Rock (not so much Sabbath as BANG) with Neil Young on vocals. Neil Young with a Scandanavian accent! And, much like their s/t debut, the occasional use of flute (and here accoustic guitar) shows their Tull influence. Along with Priest's "Angle of Retrobution", Bloody Mary's "Blood & Roll", and Wednesday 13's "Transilvania 90210" Witchcraft's "Firewood" is one of the best Metal CDs of 05. Hidden track: a cover of Pentagram's "when the screams come".

Good Mojo.......2002-10-15
Don't come to this CD expecting nganga, cannibalism and dark witchcaft. Nor should you come to this CD expecting contemporary African music (although you could see some of my other reviews for that). Instead, this CD is a survey of the religious and healing musical traditions in Kenya and Tanzania. Made at a time when many traditions were all but unknown to the outside world, the detailed linear notes do show some dating. For instance, I'm not sure the term "witch" or "witchdoctor" should even be used. Given the negative view of witches in African culture, the term shaman or priest might be more appropriate. None the less, the music here is still potent. This is real tribal music, focusing on healing traditions, as well as spirituality and rites of passage. Give this CD a look.
The BEST authentic tribal music around!.......2000-02-06
This is the best authentic tribal music collection that I have ever heard! Whereas most of today's tribal is found to be only inspired by authentic tribal music and corrupted by outside influences, this is the REAL THING. This CD is a collection of field recordings of everyday people playing their music in the process of performing their sacred rituals. Regardless of negative comments by other reviewers, this CD is spiritual and inspiring and will have you dancing around the room. That is, unless you are spiritually deprived as is common of modern man. I only wish I could find such a recording of this magnitude of the indigenous tribes of South America.
Authentic but on the dark side; not easy listening.......1998-08-02
My acquaintance with Tanzanian music comes from two years' residence near a village on the outskirts of Dar-es-Salaam 20 years ago. The drums beat all night long on many nights, and the women chanted and trilled. This CD sounds reasonably authentic but not the upbeat, vibrant sound I heard most often. This CD sounds like devil music, but lacks the strong repetitive power of many chants I have heard. As the title indicates: bad witchcraft. This CD is definitely the dark side of Africa--a side I never really experienced in two years of speaking Swahili every day.

I was really surprised about there is no reviews of this album..
I am a Guitar player and Abercrombie is one of master that I wannabe...
I own a lot of abercrombie cd and personally this album is best of all of them. this one also easy to listen.
cd like open land is nice but somehow very experimental. the other albums of john also pretty much trying to new things..
but this album You can relax while you listen. and Don thompson' bass line is just fantastic..
in interview he was tried like Jim hall and Bill Evans duo.
but I like this album much.. I own about 500 jazz cds and this one is one of 5 of them....
You gonna love this cd. if you really like jazz lines...

Vintage 70's Sound, Doom, Blues.......2005-01-20
Nostalgic, vintage, doom rock. Hard to believe this album was recorded in 2003, and not 1963 (in a good way). The Animals meets Black Sabbath. Very similar to Pentagram's "First Daze Here (1971-1975)" recordings. Very warm, bluesy metal. Sounds like Zeppelin or the Birds, and sometimes like the Beatles in parts. The track, "No Angel, No Demon" is worth the price of the CD.
Good instrumentation. Great continuity. I've had this CD playing non-stop for about 3 days, now. It has a mellow, English vibe, and not much attitude or agression to speak of. Still, this album is superior to all the nuMetal on MTV and the rap-rock on commercial rock radio stations, and most of what's on the underground rock radio stations, too! Joe Bob says, "Check it out!"
Several very catchy songs, but not as many as hoped (so only 4 stars). We'll see what the band's next album is like. Get Pentagram's "First Daze" album first, if you don't already yet have it.
essential!.......2004-08-27
this album is flat-out fantastic!get ready to travel back in time to the land of black sabbath and jethro tull.make no mistake though in assuming this is just another retread....this album has the look and feel that soooo many bands just cant capture.you need to buy this now!

Another great release from TMC. Recorded and released in 2004, this sounds straight out of prime era Black Sabbath but possibly even better. Retro doom. Just get it and thank me later.
