Released partly to celebrate International Women's Day, a holiday recognized by the United Nations, these eleven unplugged tunes from as many female singers make wonderfully varied and pleasurable listening. And the performers' backgrounds are equally fascinating. Some are comparatively well-known; Sandrine Kiberlain is a French movie star while The Wailin' Jennys, from Canada, have appeared on Prairie Home Companion. Meanwhile, Emiliana Torrini, of Icelandic-Italian parentage, made her mark with "Gollum's Song" from the second Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Others found their voices through travel--Luca Mundaca was born in Chile, irresistibly drawn to Brazil, and now lives in the USA. Marta Topferova has achieved such an effortless command of South American traditions that hardly anyone ever guesses that she is originally from the Czech Republic. As each lady in turn assumes center stage, she bewitches all comers with her own brand of adroitness, confidence and charm. Although the music is, for the most part, richly redolent of folkloric sources, many of the artists display a neo-cabaret sophistication that somehow never lapses into world-weariness. A final note: a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the Global Fund For Women, a good cause if ever there was one. --Christina Roden

Album Description
Each March women all over the world celebrate International Women's Day. A national holiday in many countries, this day celebrates everyday women as makers of history. Though often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, this day allows women everywhere to look back on a tradition of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. Women of the World: Acoustic celebrates this tradition with an exploration of acoustic music by some of the world's leading female artists.
Some of the women featured on Women of the World: Acoustic include the following. Sandrine Kiberlain is known first and foremost as an actress, having appeared in over 20 French films. "M'envoyer des Fleurs" is from her first and only album. The Canadian trio The Wailin' Jennys harmonizes together beautifully on "One Voice," a song from the group's debut album 40 Days.
The half-Icelandic, half-Italian Emiliana Torinni is perhaps most recognizable as the voice behind the enchanting "Gollum's Song" from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. She has also toured with Thievery Corporation. "Sunnyroad" is taken from her second.
Marta Topferova was born in the Czech Republic, but found her voice in the folk traditions of Latin America after discovering the Chilean protest group Inti-Illimani. Colombia native Marta Gomez contributes the haunting "Paula Ausente," a song based on the book "Paula" by noted Chilean author Isabelle Allende.
Rounding out the album is Luca Mundaca. Originally from Chile, she now resides in the U.S. Mundaca fuses her contemporary folk sensibilities with bossa nova and contributes "Não se Apavore."
A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the Global Fund for Women in support of their efforts to promote and defend the human rights of women and girls around the world.

Ah, Brazil!.......2007-04-11
I just love a good bassanova- this album delivers a great cross section of latin jazz.
I absolutely loved this CD.......2007-03-02
Women of the World: Acoustic arrived at my door unexectedly and what a wonderful surprise. This CD features ladies from France, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, Brazil, Cape Verde, Algeria, Croatia, Greece, Colombia, Cameroon, and Canada.
I'm already a fan of World music, but Putumayo always seems to find the performers and sounds that make for great crossover music. I expecially liked the Wailin' Jenny's take on One Voice, and Sandrine Kiberlain's M'envoyer des Fleurs.
All the performances were somehow calming and energizing at the same time. Most I would put in the jazz genre.
I love this CD.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST.......2007-05-13
I shouldn't have to convince anyone of the musical genius that is Van Halen. The music on this CD will stand the test of time, and will never lose it's value to those who appreciate rock.If you don't have this, you should. You will have made a wise choice.Feel good about that.
Worst Roth-era disc..........2007-03-12
By far. Can't beleive all of the glowing reviews for this one. Well, i guess thats what this page can do sometimes. Just a lousey, confused effort in my book. Love VH too, favorite band of all time, but just could never warm up to WACF. "CRADLE" and "EVERYBOY WANTS..." are decent VH staples and fine in their own right, but the REST! Much of the material on this album sounds like B-side and outtakes! "LOSS OF CONTROL" "COULD THIS BE MAGIC" AND "TAKE YOUR WHISKEY HOME" are just failed experiments. WACF is just a weak, limp-wristed transistional album for the band. It still gets two stars because this is atleast better then III and much of the dreck put out under VAN HAGAR.
Here is the 3 best VH albums;
(1) "Fair Warning"
(2) "VH 1"
(3) "Diver Down" (the most underrated VH album)
Here are the 3 worst;
(1) "OU812"
(2) "Women and Children First"
(3) "VH III (everyone loves to bash this monstosity)"
Growth.......2007-02-12
The short 20 second song after "in a simple rhyme" is the uncredited/unfinished "Growth", and that symbolized this record, big improvement from VHII, better songs and ed's first Keyboard song "...and the cradle will rock" done on a distorted electric piano through a flanger.
THE VAN HALEN LEGEND CONTINUES WITH WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST! .......2007-01-07
I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album entitled "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" by one of Rock's most ALL-TIME greatest legendary bands ever, I'm talking about the GREAT LEGENDARY V-A-N H-A-L-E-N! "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" was originally released in 1980 on the Warner Brothers Records label in association with Van Halen Productions Inc. I purchased the very first release of this album on Compact Disc and the matrix or ID number is 3415-2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
WOW! What can I say about this legendary album and the great legendary band that recorded it all those years ago that hasn't already been said? Instead of writing and adding my own personal notes, I will quote word for word what is written on the inner sleeve album notes as follows: "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" was Van Halen's third album and third consecutive multi-million best seller. Released in March of 1980, it contained nine original songs including such instant Van Halen classics as "And The Cradle Will Rock...," "Tora! Tora!" and "Everybody Wants Some!!"
The Netherlands-born Van Halen brothers were originally trained as concert pianists. When the family relocated to Los Angeles, Alex (drums) and Eddie (guitar) joined forces with Midwestern-bred vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony to form Mammoth. After changing its name to VAN HALEN, the group became a club favorite and was signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1977.
Van Halen's first two albums and the group's legendary live performances on two sold-out world tours established the band as a premiere rock attraction. Returning to the studio in 1980 with producer Ted Templeman, they recorded "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" in two and a half weeks. The album raced into the Top 5, where it remained for more than two months and became a certified Platinum seller.
As you can see, this is definitely a great legendary treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will also prove to persevere and endure the test of time and will get better with age like wine. This legendary priceless gem will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, As we all fully well know, the VAN HALEN legend does not even come close to ending here either! If anything, IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! VAN HALEN would continue to release many more great albums that were still yet to come that lied ahead. There would also prove to be more tales and stories in the VAN HALEN legend that would still need to be conquered and written in chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviews, is something that you will have to stay tuned and read further on at a later date. Here's to you David Lee, Eddie, Alex and Michael. Keep Persevering! Keep The Faith! And as the saying goes folks, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong or need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. VAN HALEN RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock n' Roll, J.L.
Brutal album that spawned Pantera, Slayer, etc........2006-12-30
There are three Van Halen incarnations, the original line-up with David Lee Roth, the Sammy Hagar era, and the one shot with Gary Cherone, "Van Halen III", which was a disaster.
It's disheartening to see a band that broke so many rules in its DLR heyday flounder to the unemployed ranks they are today, but that's the price they paid when Roth was fired or quit, depending on whose story you believe.
But let's face it: Van Halen had four great albums, the first four. "Diver Down" and "1984" were watered down with too many covers - "Diver Down", and pop schmaltz - "1984", not to mention the most horrible production for a major league band ever. No wonder Roth left.
"Women And Children First" could lay a fair claim to the first thrash metal album or bonecrusher ala Pantera, however you choose. "And The Cradle Will Rock" starts the CD out in familiar enough territory, with Dave's smug but clever vocals and Eddie's tapping, but that's where any resemblance to the first two outings ends. "Everybody Wants Some!" is the threshold heavy rock had to cross to go into uncharted waters, redefining the very genre of metal with Eddie's brutal attack chords and Armegeddon whammy dives. The assault continues all the way through "Take Your Whiskey Home", then cools down for the stoopid title track (which we could have done without) and the closer "In A Simple Rhyme" that probably would have been better placed on the first album with its harmonies, but that's okay. We had to come up for air.
What made Van Halen's first albums special was Roth's bigger than life stage presence, lyrics that often bordered on stupid but were clever enough to give the band an edge that showed it was in on the joke, too.
There can be no comparison to the insultingly horrible Sammy Hagar-led line-up. The music was atrocious, and Hagar tried to equate himself as funny and smart as Roth, and only came off as the bumbling stooge he is. Roth got away with sexism through implication and humor. Hagar, referring to women as cuts of beef on "5150" showed about as much intelligence and humor as a dead cactus. Ditto the remarkably stupid album titles that followed, and a once cutting edge band became as banal as Hagar's love for Rush Limbaugh.
For a while, though, they were the best in hard rock, and maybe if Roth rejoins, as the rumors persist, we might just get a taste of what made them special in the first place. Meanwhile, get the first four CD's and hound somebody to remaster them.

Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women concerns four sisters in post-Civil War Massachusetts, but at times it feels as if its musical adaptation should have been called "Little Woman," so focused on a single sibling it is. Both Allan Knee's book and Sutton Foster's natural charisma and energy help constantly train the spotlight onto tomboy Jo. Yet it's not that much of a problem because Foster is strong enough to carry the show. She gets excellent support from the rest of the cast and especially cabaret artist Maureen McGovern, who as Marmee gets two beautiful ballads ("Here Alone" and "Days of Plenty") that are tailor-made for her imperial, burnished tone, and could well acquire a life outside the show. Composer Jason Howland worked as either musical director or musical supervisor on three period-set Frank Wildhorn musicals (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Civil War), which gives him a distinct experience in dealing with the historical setting here. Although the score oftentimes veers to the bland side, Howland also shows encouraging signs of spryness ("Five Forever") and melodic confidence that at one point slyly honors Sondheim ("Astonishing"). Old-fashioned in the best possible way, Little Women makes a good complement to Wicked for those trying to entice a younger audience to the delights of the musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Love It!!!.......2007-06-27
My school is going to be doing this musical next spring so I bought this CD in order to prepare for it. I fell in love with the music. Much like the book, it is personal, tender, and real. Some songs are just so heartwrenching I want to cry (but maybe I am a little bit of a drama queen). Simply gripping, I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves musical theater.
Beautiful and better than expected.......2007-05-15
I had heard so many mixed things about this show, and so I missed the chance to see it on Broadway. Well, now I am sure wishing I had seen it, because the story that unfolds on this CD is so beautiful and so reminiscent of the book I adored when I was a "little woman." I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying the joyous romp and sense of adventure that imbues this musical journey. Nearly every song captivated me, though I must admit it took a few passes before I finally embraced the entire score. Now I giggle with delight at the "Operatic Tragedy," "Our Finest Dreams" and "The Weekly Volcano Press." I also love "I'd Be Delighted," as Meg and Jo prep for the ball, and I adore Laurie's "Take a Chance on Me." Such passion! And the composers completely capture Jo's yearning to be something more in "Astonishing." Fantastic!
The ballads are simply gorgeous! I cannot get through Maureen McGovern's song, "Days of Plenty" without sheeding tears. And "The Fire Within Me" is likewise a heartfelt testamanet of love for one's family. So beautiful!
Open your heart, ears, and imagination to Little Women and enjoy the journey.
Good Idea Gone Bad.......2007-03-16
I loved the book Little Women, and I love musicals, but this CD did not blend the two well at all! I could barely get through the CD, there may be one or two songs I would listen to again, but not very often. It was difficult to see how these songs could do justice to the mood of the book. I feel that they hurt the story. I don't recommend buying this album.
What a BORE!.......2006-07-22
Saw the show in Washington and nearly fell asleep. Should never have been made. The score is dismall with a couple of all too brief moments of musicality, wisely given to Maureen McGovern. However, it's not enough to save this misguided mess. Skip the CD, pick up Jane Eyre, a musical version of a classic that works beautifully and deserved more success than it acheived.
Foster Showcase.......2006-05-06
Little Women is all about Sutton Foster. She does a great job, but as shown by the earily closing of the show it, one actress can't fix a flop. The songs in Little Women which tell a story or forward the plot of the show like "Weekly Volcano Press," "Astonishing," and "An Operatic Tradegy" are good and very entertaining, however a lot of the other songs in the show are stagnant. Basically any number without Foster or McGovern in it is not worth listening to. The show comes across as having good intentions. Though it has some good songs (I know people who have used some as audition pieces well), it does not seem to jump out at the audience at all.

Excellent but very short tracks.......2007-03-14
I bought this CD because I've always loved listening to the music on the movie. However I am a bit disappointed that at least half of the tracks on the CD are less then a minute long. One of them is only 23 seconds and some only 35 to 45 seconds each! I still enjoy the CD for what it is, the music is excellent it's just a little annoying that the tracks are so short.
Beautiful music.......2007-01-19
This CD contains the beautiful music from this classic movie. All music without singing or talking is included, so, sadly, you won't find songs like "For the Beauty of the Earth," or "Here We Come a Wasseling." Every great movie has an overture, and this soundtrack includes that. It brings back memories.
Lovely Soundtrack.......2007-01-16
Little Women soundtrack is lovely.
This is the kind of CD you can listen to any time even when you have a dinner party.
If you enjoy the movie you will like the soundtrack.
Beautiful.......2006-12-30
This CD is beautiful. I had loved the music from when I first saw the movie. The music is great and I listen to the music when I'm away at college studying. It keeps me up.
Absolutely amazing!!.......2006-11-02
I have loved the music of this movie ever since I was a little girl and the movie first came out. I finally got the CD and I am very pleased!
Though the 26 track cd is less than 40 minutes, each track is incredibly moving in their own right. My personal favorites are Orchard House, Spring, Harvest Time, Valley of the Shadow, and the last track Under the Umbrella.
If you love good orchestral music, this soundtrack is for you. You will not be disappointed!

masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk

Absolutely peerless.......2006-11-17
"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?
Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.
once-in-a-lifetime greatness.......2006-10-06
Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.
But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."
A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."
And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."
All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.
"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.
Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.
And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.
"I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'." "Bess, You Is My Woman Now." "A Woman Is a Sometime Thing." "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York." "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" "Oh Lawd, I'm on My Way."
All brilliantly conceived, orchestrated and recorded.
The greatest trumpet player in this history of jazz.
The father of scat singing.
The queen of the jazz vocal.
There are no-brainers, and then there is this Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong collaboration --- music that imprints on your soul.
We love this album.......2006-08-22
We hope they will someday bring this beautiful story back to the stage
Simply great.......2006-03-04
The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.
A must have for everyone!

This set of Anna Russell's inspired satirical monologues should be labeled with a warning notice. Why? Because after listening to her whirlwind explication of Wagner's Ring Cycle, even the most confirmed Wagnerite will be unable to listen to the Ring for weeks to come. Just listening to Russell declare in an incredulous voice: "I'm not making this up, y'know" is enough to induce you to shed bucketloads of laughter-induced tears. Gilbert and Sullivan fans will find their heroes savaged in her concoction of a typical G&S product, complete with a soprano lead who "loves below her station." Other targets include "the nymphs and shepherds" style of quavery English singing, complete with "hey-nonny-nonny's," coloratura mad scenes, and much else, including Russian folk songs, like her "Da, nyet, da, nyet." This disc is packed with laughs, chuckles, smiles, and everything. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Intelligent and musical fun.-.......2007-01-13
Due to the recent passing away of the legenday Anna Russell I bought this record and certainly did not regret it.- Inspite of having been originally recorded in 1952 and 1953 the sound is very good.- Ms. Russell combines a great sense of humour with profound musical knowledge, a wonderful timing of her jokes, and the talent of a gifted and very musical singer.- She captures the essence of the German lied, the French mélodie, the efforts of a dramatic soprano to make herself heard over the huge Wagnerian orchestra, culminating in her famous, already classic, 22 minutes long analysis of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs.- I listened to this recording three times in a row and had great fun.- Only Victor Borge can be compared to her with respect to this rare combination of deep musicianship with a real gift for comedy.- If you don't know yet these numbers, don't hesitate - buy the record, you will not be sorry.-
The Genius of Anna Russell.......2006-03-15
If you love music, but are happy to see the funny side of even the great composers, then this album is for you. Anna Russell is a singer of note but a comedian of greatness. She finds the pivotal styles of composers and caricatures them to great effect. The explanations she gives of the basics of Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas and the way she dissects Wagners Ring Cycle bring tears to the eyes with laughter. I recommend this album to all music lovers with a twinkle in their eyes. Truly a great comic experience.
If you enjoy laughing.........2006-02-23
I love opera, but I also enjoy spoofs of opera. Anna Russell was a classic "spoofer" of operatic stories and conventions. Nobody does it better. My favorite on this album is her take-off on Wagner's "Ring."
This CD can probably also be enjoyed by those who have only a nodding acquaintance with opera, but may not be enjoyed by those who take opera with 100% seriousness.
Anna Russell strikes again!.......2005-10-14
I have heard all of these Anna Russell selections at one time or another, but having them all together in one place, and on a CD, is a real plus. She is absolutely riotously funny. I teach a course in "Introduction to opera" and use her segments on Gilbert and Sullivan and on the Ring Cycle in class, just to lighten things up a bit for the students.
Anna Russell is a SCREAM!.......2005-08-05
I've had the vinyl of this album for over 20 years; the CD purchase was to update my system. For anyone who loves classical vocal music, and in particular the Wagner Ring Cycle and Gilbert and Sullivan, this album is a MUST. You will split your sides laughing; Ms. Russell is so very accurate in her comedy. Also, truth to tell, her Ring synopsis gave me, a newcomer to Wagner (years ago) a solid understanding of the musical plot and story line.

Great practice.......2007-05-04
I am so happy I found this cd! I started doing yoga at the gym about a month ago, but quickly found myself wanting something I could do anywhere, on the beach, in the woods, ect. I first bought Tracy Rich's Yoga Anywhere and was hugely disapointed as it was way too easy and could only be done in your home, not outside as she she asks you to use chairs, doorways, kitchen sinks ect.
This cd was my second try and I feel I got it right this time. The practice is challenging to me as a beginner which I like, I want to be able to practice and work on improving. I like that there are poses in this cd that I cannot already do. I feel like I've gotten a great workout after using this cd, one that comes close to actually going to class.
It will take some time of looking at the poses and coordinating the practice to know what she is telling me to do, but after a few times more of listening and looking I should have a great portable practice that I can do anywhere, anytime.
I am bringing this to Belize with me next month for the month so I can still do yoga even though I won't be able to make it to class. Thank you Shiva Rae!
awsome.......2006-12-21
I've had this CD set for about a year and a half now. It is one of the best investments I have made in my yoga practice. $20 is nothing for what this CD offers. Doing yoga at home to this CD, using combinations of various tracks has brought my yoga practice to a higher level. I notice it when I go to actual classes. It's nice to have the private space of one's home to work on poses. It's also nice to have guidance. So often I tell myself I'll just do the CD for 45 minutes. Next thing I know, it's an hour and 45 minutes later and I've just had a killer yoga session, feeling so much better than when I started. Shiva Rea has a great voice, great pacing, great music, great thoughts to inspire yoga practice, etc. This is a great way to save money on yoga classes. You can still go to class, just less often. I love that this is a CD rather than a DVD/video. I have no desire to do yoga with the TV on. Light some candles, set up your sacred yoga space, and get yoga-fied at home. Highly recommended.
soothing, rejuvinating, challenging.......2006-07-03
For anyone who craves a thorough yoga workout, but is still interested in a moderate and soothing journey, this is for you. Shiva's instructions are well-detailed and easy to follow. If you don't know the sanskrit names for the poses, you will begin to learn quite a few of them with this cd. There is both a solar practice cd and a lunar practice cd. The solar practice is energizing and challenging, while the lunar is perfect for unwinding after a stressful day at work. I highly recommend this for more intermediate practitioners. It is also a good challenge for the adventurous beginner as well. Enjoy!
Classic Shiva.......2006-03-26
Shiva Rea's "Yoga Sanctuary: A Guided Hatha Yoga Practice" is fantastic for yoga on the go. This vocally guided practice is well rounded out from beginning to end. The spotlight review nicely covers every aspect of each track, so I won't repeat that. I really like that it suggests track sequences for sessions ranging from 20 minutes to about 60 minutes. Shiva dictates in her classic soothing voice with it's impeccable timing making transitions from pose to pose as smooth as can be. You will love how you feel after you've done this!
As with any at-home yoga video, it's essential that you are familiar with naming of postures, otherwise you can really injure yourself. With that said, I recommend this for intermediate level and up. If you're a Shiva fan, you will enjoy this great portable yoga work-out.
More conscientious instruction required.......2006-03-20
While I like the basic idea of this CD set, it seems to be appropriate only for people who don't really require much instruction or advance warning about which pose to move into. The transitions between poses are sometimes very awkward, occasionally because there isn't enough time to move into the pose, at other times because Ms Rea does not coordinate her instructions for body movement well with breathing, and finally at other times because the pose to be moved into is ambiguously described so that it just isn't clear where to put what part of the body where.
Those who may wish to compensate that fact by looking at the poses pictured in the poster included with the CD will find that several transitional stages of a pose or flow sequence are simply not pictured. So if you are new to vinyasa yoga, you will probably find yourself feeling inadequately guided. In addition to the audio description and the photo collage sometimes wanting, it is apparent that Ms Rea does not take care to ensure that both sides of the body are worked for an equal length of time. There is a clear emphasis on the right side of the body, which leaves the afterimpression that the body has been given rather lopsided attention during the workout.
Given all these limitations, my conclusion is that there are other, more effective home yoga practices on the market now. This practice is alright, but only alright, for people who are not new to yoga and preferably who have already had an introduction into vinyasa yoga somewhere else.

Album Description
Third album from the brotherly British trio (Ryan, Gary and Ross Jarman), the follow-up to their 2005 breakthrough album The New Fellas. Their past success allowed them the freedom to pick their producer and the band ended up choosing Franz Ferdinand maninman Alex Kapranos, who was on the same musical wavelength and understood what the band wanted to achieve. Features 12 tracks including the first single 'Men's Needs'. Wichita. 2007.

Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23
If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.
I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25
I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.
Great Music as usual.......2002-10-08
This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are
favorites of audiences everywhere
in the world...
A gem!.......2001-10-29
Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.
As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!
Amazing truly Amazing.......2000-05-09
This 2 CD is amazing. It is great for plane rides and other things. I always listen to it at work. Allmost every song on this CD is beautiful and graceful. The blue danube is a classic and my personal favorite song on this album. Some of the songs are okay but none are bad. Overall this is an amazing 2 CD collection and it is worth every cent of your money . . .
