Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19
A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....
Pure joy.......2005-03-08
I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.
A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09
I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.
I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.
All in all, a nice CD.

Kelly Hops Again!.......2001-04-01
Compared to the "original" cast album, which was the two writers and a piano, this album is a dream. Still, it would have been great to hear the original orchestrations instead of a studio band. The performances on this CD give the show some credibility, unlike the first album. One wants to see more of this type of thing done. But put in the original orchestrations. How about Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Yearling, La Strada? If you are a serious collector nab this while you can.
A FITTING TRIBUTE TO MOOSE CHARLAP.......2001-03-22
HAVING BEEN ONE OF THE VERY FEW WHO SAW "KELLY" in 1965,I WAS VERY PLEASED TO FIND THIS STUDIO RECORDING OF THE ORIGINAL MUSIC. I DO MEAN ORIGINAL. SOME OF THE SONGS THAT WERE WRITTEN WERE LATER REMOVED BY A GROUP OF PANIKY PRODUCERS PRIOR TO THE NEW YORK OPENING. THEIR ACTIONS RESULTED IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOW THAN HAD BEEN ENVISIONED BY THE COMPOSERS. IT ALSO MADE "KELLY" A MONUMENTAL FLOP SO MUCH SO THAT ITS DEMISE WAS THE SUBJECT OF A COVER STORY IN "SATURDAY EVENING POST". IF YOU READ THE CD NOTES..IT IS ALL EXPLAINED THERE. THE CD IS DEDICATED TO MOOSE CHARLAP. THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, INCLUDING BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES (TITANIC) AND RIGHT OUT OF THE 60'S, SANDY STEWART. IT MAY HAVE SOME SHORTCOMINGS, BUT OVERALL..EDDIE LAWRENCE SCORED WITH THIS CD!
WHERE ARE THE ORIGINAL SONGS?.......2000-02-10
TO START OFF WITH. THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A BROADWAY CAST ALBUM. IT SOUNDS LIKE AN OFF BROADWAY ALBUM BY LISTENING TO THE ORCHESTRA. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE A BAND THAN AN ORCHESTRA. SECOND,I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL SHOW. WELL, READINNG MY BEST PLAYS OF 1964-1965, THEY LIST THE SONGS ON OPENING NIGHT AND A BUNCH OF SONGS ARE NOT ON THE ALBUM AND SONGS ON THE ALBUM ARE NOT LISTED IN THE BOOK. I AM CONFUSED. ANWAY, WHATEVER IS ON THE CD IS FAIR. ALL THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, BUT LISTENING TO THE CD, IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH. PRETTY AVERAGE MUSIC. TAKE A LESSON FROM THE DRAT!THE CAT! RECORDING ON VARESE SARABANDE. NOW THATS A GREAT STUDIO CAST ALBUM. I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY PICKED KELLY OVER MANY OTHER SHOWS THAT HAVE A MUCH BETTER SCORE THAT WERE NEVER RECORDED LIKE THE BODY BEAUTIFUL OR SHERRY OR LOVELY LADIES, KIND GENTLEMAN TO NAME A FEW. IF YOU ARE A BROADWAY SHOW COLLECTOR THAN THIS SHOULD BE IN YOUR COLLECTION, OTHERWISE, I WOULD PASS.

Album Description
The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.
The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? In this unprecedented 2-CD setfeaturing over 145 minutes of vintage recordings and 64 pages of lyrics, photos, notes and synopsisyou can discover how The Wizard of Oz entertained the American public for the first two decades of the 20th century. And like the audiences of nearly a hundred years ago, you can hum along to "Budweiser," "Sammy," and "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay"everyone's favorite songs from The Wizard of Oz! Also included in this comprehensive collection are recordings from later Oz musicals, The Woggle-Bug and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz written by Oz creator L. Frank Baum, as well as vintage non-Oz recordings by original "Wizard of Oz stars" Montgomery & Stone and Bessie Wynn
Customer Reviews:
A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07
This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?
Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20
I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!
Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20
This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.
A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30
Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.
Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17
One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.
Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.
As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.
Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!

Customer Reviews:
Highly Enjoyable!.......2004-09-01
First of all, I want to address some comments made by the previous reviewer Gina R. Dalfonzo (Springfield, VA USA).
1). "Who that saw the movie would think that Faith Prince could pull off the role of Holly Golightly? But she does it with flair! If you can push Audrey to the back of your mind for a while (difficult, I admit-she's my favorite actress) and think of this as a stand-alone version of "Tiffany's," Prince's performance is thoroughly enjoyable. She brings a lot of spirit, humor, and poignancy, and of course that wonderful voice of hers, to the part."
I agree wholeheartedly that Prince gives a riveting performance here. I am absolutely blown away by her voice and her characterization. She starts things out wonderfully with, what I view as the scores best song, "I've Got a Penny." I do not have issues putting Audrey to the back of my mind, it's hard to compare the two actresses when one is a singing role and one is not. I was never really a huge Prince fan, but this cd is definitely making one of me.
2. "And John Schneider is terrific-as the romantic lead who appears in only six numbers out of 33 (and in three of those, he gets only a few seconds)! If you look at the liner notes, it seems that when they tried to reconcile two different versions of the show for this recording, some songs that would have been his got handed over to other people. It's a shame, because he's got a great singing voice and, by the sound of things, could act circles around George Peppard (who I've always thought was too laid-back in this role). Schneider and Prince make perfect sparring partners in "Who Needs Her?" And "The Bachelor" is a hoot-especially for those of us who know him best as the quintessential family man on "Smallville"! "
John is fantastic, but I'm not sure how the reviewer concluded that some of John's songs were handed over to other singers. The liner notes clearly state that two versions of the show were combined, with the songs being placed together in an order that makes the most sense. If you look at what songs were in what version, than Sally's role is not bigger than John's. All Sally's solos are not in both versions. To get a true picture of the show, you would have to listen to each version by programming the tracks based on how they are very clearly indicated in each synopsis.
3. "It's silly that a secondary character like Holly's friend Mag Wildwood gets more time than the leading man, especially when nearly all her songs convey the same message. (You used to be a good girl, now you're a bad girl. Thanks, Mag, but we heard you the first time.) The same goes for Holly's ex-husband, Doc. Sally Kellerman and Hal Linden both do an excellent job in their respective roles, but all the repetition gets annoying. "
Again, Sally's role is not bigger than John's. What we are seeing is that Sally's songs were replaced from the first version to the second version. Therefore, we get more songs for Sally than John, but again, programming the versions based on how they are laid out in the synopsis clearly makes sense. Also, the songs are similiar in theme because 1/2 of them were replacement songs from the first version. It makes sense to me that they would want the newer songs to continue the themes of the songs they are replacing.
I will say that Sally steals the show on this cd. She is absolutely fantastic and her vocalizations completely blow me away. She is awesome!
4). My suggestion: Someone needs to stage a concert version of this one. There's so much good material here and it's so well performed, it could probably find a good-sized audience. Get as many of the stars from this recording as possible; in particular, do anything necessary to get Prince, Schneider, and the great Jonathan Freeman, who also doesn't have enough to do in the recording. Cut most of the songs for Doc and Mag and give most of the extra time to Schneider, but save a little for Freeman. And then put it on PBS so we can all enjoy it!
I disagree. As much as I love the music and the performances (there is not one weak link in the cast), I can understand why this show didn't work. It would take extensive re-writes to make it work. While there are brilliant songs (many) there are some real hokey ones, like "Lament for Ten Men" and "The Party People" - very enjoyable musically - but lyrically horrible.
All in all, this is one fun show featuring great music sung by thrilling voices. If you want to be entertained, pick this puppy up....but don't over analyze it. It works best if you just enjoy the beautiful music and beautiful voices.
(By the way, whoever compiled the track list was pretty careless. Freeman is listed as a soloist for at least two ensemble numbers in which I can't hear him at all, Schneider and Prince aren't listed for one song in which you can clearly hear them, and so on.)
Great cast, good songs, a few flaws.......2004-05-06
Who that saw the movie would think that Faith Prince could pull off the role of Holly Golightly? But she does it with flair! If you can push Audrey to the back of your mind for a while (difficult, I admit-she's my favorite actress) and think of this as a stand-alone version of "Tiffany's," Prince's performance is thoroughly enjoyable. She brings a lot of spirit, humor, and poignancy, and of course that wonderful voice of hers, to the part.
And John Schneider is terrific-as the romantic lead who appears in only six numbers out of 33 (and in three of those, he gets only a few seconds)!
It's silly that a secondary character like Holly's friend Mag Wildwood gets more time than the leading man, especially when nearly all her songs convey the same message. (You used to be a good girl, now you're a bad girl. Thanks, Mag, but we heard you the first time.) The same goes for Holly's ex-husband, Doc. Sally Kellerman and Hal Linden both do an excellent job in their respective roles, but all the repetition gets annoying.
(By the way, whoever compiled the track list was pretty careless. Freeman is listed as a soloist for at least two ensemble numbers in which I can't hear him at all, Schneider and Prince aren't listed for one song in which you can clearly hear them, and so on.)
Very pleased and thankful.......2003-01-26
I'd give this recording 3-1/2 stars. The music and lyrics are not perfect, and if this were a recording of an on-stage version, I'd question the casting of Faith Prince as the lead role. (Maybe it's just hard to escape the idea of Audrey Hepburn in that role.) But the music and lyrics, while not perfect, are intersting, with many interesting and successful moments; I find myself humming the songs hours later, without thinking about it. Definitely an addition at least for collectors of musicals.
Now Make it a Play!.......2001-09-04
This is a 1996 studio cast recording from the most hyped show that never opened on Broadway. Never opened because of terrible previews, a bad book, and a poor choice of MTM as the lead. After listening to the outstanding tunes on this 2-CD set, it is clear that a singer with a strong stage voice could have made the show a hit. Too bad Faith Prince was only ten at the time! The material is incredible, with tunes that rival the best from any musical. I highly recommend this disc, and only wish that the show could be finally put on stage!!!
For All Faith Prince Fans.......2001-08-29
This CD has finally seen the light of day. It was recorded over 5 years ago. Another showcase for Faith. I am sure some day it will be hard to find this CD so buy it now!

Romance! Music! Comedy! And ELLEN FOLEY!.......2000-02-02
Live stage shows are an art form much overlooked in America; so finding this CD was a wonderful surprise, as it allowed me to enjoy something I wouldn't otherwise ever have a chance to see: a play starring my favorite actress, ELLEN FOLEY! I've always been more impressed with her acting (NIGHT COURT) than her singing (BAT OUT OF HELL) and this CD contains more of her presence and personality than any record I've heard her on! It's mainly the story of a woman who has 2 encounters with a man who, while he comes across as optimistic and uplifting on the surface, is really a self-destructive personality with problems of his OWN! (I could probably relate because I've met the type!) Highly entertaining; highly recommended! (Now if only someone would reissue her solo album, NIGHTOUT; or get her to do a new album... we can hope, right?)

Old & New.......2005-12-24
Michelle Pirret is a young chanteuse of the New York jazz scene who has found a charming musical and lyrical connection with aged composer and musician Bernard Bierman, the end result of this thoughtful collaboration being the album "Somewhere in the World (Original Cast Records)." Michelle's vocals play clear and refined, never straying too far from the melodic line, yet fully exploring the jazz genres she has chosen to play upon with Bierman's original compositions.
"Forget about me," is the album's opener, framed in a classical Samba-style jazz guitar lightly outlined with building percussive influences, and allowing Michelle to deliver lyrics with class and matter-of-fact charm. This song is repeated in part at the close of this CD, allowing the listener to hear Bierman's voice and piano, giving insight into the mindset and intent of the songwriter. The immediate transition of sound and idea is to a torch-styled ballad with piano, titled "Vanity," a track that climbed up Hit Parade's Top Ten in 1955 under the vocals of Sarah Vaughan. Michelle handles the vocal duties with delicate charm.
The album's title track "Somewhere in the World" is an American rumba warmly presented with romance, allowing passion and energy to connect Pirret's heart with the lyrics. Some of the more exotic Latin jazz percussive elements can be a bit distracting, like running water, but the overall composition and execution is pleasant.
Tracks like "Anything for A Laugh," "What Must I do," and "Am I Being a Fool?" all articulate ideas from relationship and yearning love perspectives that allow Michelle to show her refined talents of expressing an emotive idea. The medley track "Town of Make Believe/I Wish That I Could Learn to fly," is the artistic expression of reaching for one's imagination and dreams, the real heart of art and performance. The lyrical and tuneful presentation on all of these tracks relates heavily to the feel of New York off Broadway musicals. This idea is carried through to a crescendo in the duet shared with Steve Ross on "Let Me Be the One." The listener can almost see the stage actors and the set decorations. It's no surprise that the Pirret/Bierman connection began with the New York Dramatist's Guild.
For tracks that swing, the listener may find the soft and jazzy sounds of "Hanging Around," or Stop Pussyfootin' Around" to be well-written pieces that convey the heart of jazz lounge, entertaining and upbeat with playful reverence. Along this same line, but transporting back by a few decades is the charming "Unless it can Happen With you," a pure ragtime-style piece complete with scratchy record transition, and plucky bubble gum lyrics.
This album as a whole is a fitting tribute to the writing talents of the great Bernard Bierman, as well as a showcase for the grace and charm of the young songstress Michelle Pirret. The ideas and the music are more often than not soft and reflective jazz, peaceful, thoughtful ideas linked by the old and the new.
A great place to be in the "world".......2003-10-15
Michelle Pirret's debut CD "somewhere in the world" is a delight from beginning to end. Her voice is soulful and smooth with just that hint of vulnerablity that grabs the listener from the get go. The CD is produced with clean pure sound that allows Michelle and the songs to shine. The song choices are also a wonderful surprise. All and all not to be missed.
so great.......2002-10-20
This is music to fall in love to...and with. Pirret's sexy, soulful voice is backed up by a killer band. Her lyrics are sweet & sassy and the tunes vary from lover's ballads to swingy jazz sets. It's good for the soul...and it's not bad for the bedroom either.
the perfect cd.......2002-10-13
Have a listen to Michelle Pirret's CD "Somewhere in the World". She has the voice of an angel--or she would, if angels were this sexy. The bassist and band backing her up are fabulous. Great for romancing your sweetheart or just to float away on a cloud with.

"A beautifully realized album that is sultry and mellow; the perfect accompaniment for the upcoming fall evenings."

Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21
No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

Customer Reviews:
JULIE BUDD SHINES IN A HACKNEYED, PEDESTRIAN MUSICAL . . . . . .......2007-04-17
LATE NITE COMIC, Brian Gari's studio recording of his failed Broadway show, was Original Cast Records' first CD release. Fortunately, their reputation doesn't ride on this recording alone. Among the company's gems (I'm not being sarcastic) are A . . . MY NAME WILL ALWAYS BE ALICE; THE BAKER'S WIFE; CARMELINA; IN TROUSERS; ONWARD, VICTORIA; to name a few. Composer/lyricist Gari based the musical on his relationship with a ballet dancer - sung on this recording by the marvelous Julie Budd - a tedious and predictable story line if there ever was one. It comes to life only when Ms. Budd (and, briefly, during Robin Kaiser's number) is involved, but unfortunately, she is given very little to do: "Clara's Dancing School," a lovely ballad; "It Had To Happen Sometime," a duet with Brian Gari; "When I'm Moving," an up-tempo number; and a reprise of "It Had To Happen Sometime." However, except for the first song, the rest are encumbered by trite melodies and hackneyed lyrics. In fact, the only lyrics Mr. Gari seems capable of writing are ones that rhyme "last" with "past" and "dance" with "chance," "tights" with "nights," etc. You can see the rhyme coming a mile away.
To make matters worse, he assigns most of the 21 numbers to himself, singing in an anemic, nasal tenor usually reserved for whiners. Perhaps Robert LuPone (Patti's brother & "Zach" in the orginal production of A CHORUS LINE) made the songs sound better than they actually are. Perhaps not. When LATE NITE COMIC opened at the Ritz Theatre on October 15, 1987, it was roasted by the critics and closed after 4 performances. It's one of the few show recordings about which I kept thinking, "When will this ever end?"
Better to buy one of Julie Budd's solo albums instead.
Julie Budd is sensational........2001-12-28
As much as I have loved this album for its more than valid attempt to capture the trials and tribulations of an aspiring stand up comic who is totally into himself, the best and most collectible songs are the DUETS WITH JULIE BUDD, and the SOLOS BY JULIE BUDD. The quality and style of her singing is almost incongrous to the rest of it, she is brilliant in the duet Had To Happen Sometime.
