This is Etta James's first full-length album, recorded for Chess Records' Argo subsidiary in 1960. It taps all aspects of her then-blossoming talent. There's the crooning rock ballad "My Dearest Darling" and the elegantly symphonic "Sunday Kind of Love." Her classic, brokenhearted "All I Could Do Was Cry" follows the sweet title track and the bawdy blues stomper "I Just Want to Make Love to You." And there's a version of Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather," which Lena Horne made famous. James's fine way with such a wide embrace of material wouldn't again be this well displayed on a single album until she was united with producer Jerry Wexler for 1977's Deep in the Night. --Ted Drozdowski
Amazon.com
The R&B queen's classic collection is augmented this time around by a long-overdue digital remastering, plus a few bonus tracks, presumably for those who found the original album a little on the brief side. In addition to James's well-known hits, including "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "Stormy Weather," there are four additional songs: "My Heart Cries," "Spoonful," "It's a Crying Shame," and "If I Can't Have You." Although one might cynically suggest that these were added to give Etta fans something to purchase besides The Essential Etta James, it's definitely true that these tracks are worth hearing. --Genevieve Williams

We used the song "At Last" at my daughter's wedding as the recessional when they left the ceremony. It was so cute. Great CD with the "old" sound.

She's no stranger to the towering highs and lows of the heart, and Etta James's soaring, gospel-tinged pipes match up well with the rigors of unabashed bliss. Happily, the good people at Chess Records recognize this, and they have thoughtfully collected some of the best examples into one tidy record. Kicking off with her classic treatment of "At Last," the collection moves through the lilting strings of "My Dearest Darling" on into the expressive tones of "I Want to Be Loved (But Only by You)" with grace and emotional candor. James can be simultaneously tender and deeply honest and her ability to express the desperate joy that is the soul of love remains one of life's marvelous pleasures. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
New Edge to "Old" Love Songs.......2007-07-07
For years I have said that even though Etta James did not have many "Top Ten" hits on the charts, she is the best interpreter of other singers' songs, the best who ever lived and sang on a New Orleans or a Chicago stage or bar stool. She takes every song she sings and makes it all new and all Etta. She is the single most important reason I became a fan of the blues _ _ _ years ago. You get the picture? I am an old lady and am an old fan.
She's been through many years of problems and heartache, but then, here she still is, with a voice that is even better (if that's possible!) than when she was a sweet young thing performing with Louie Armstrong, Ray Charles, BB King and all the great band leaders and blues singers. She even has a new thin physique!
A couple of the tunes are ones she had in her regular repertoire forty-five years ago and others are contemporary hits from other artists. Each one is "pure Etta." I seem to play this one over and over and over. I can't get enough. I even have it on my computer so I can listen to it when I am doing other work!
This CD is a great example of what the blue are and the influence it can have on all kinds of music. Some of the tunes one will hardly recognize at first. And--the best part of this recording is that you don't have to be in love to enjoy it! (though it wouldn't be bad that way, too)
Etta.......2007-05-30
Great songs and some very sensual! Perfect for a romantic dinner at home with candles.....
Gets better each time.......2007-04-02
This is one of those CD's that just keeps getting better with familiarity. Etta really puts her heart and soul into each song. I bought it for "At Last" but now love all the songs on it. It sounds like my old 45's, but in a good way.

Californian Etta James decided against accepting filmmaker Martin Scorcese's personal invitation to sing at The Blues gala in New York in early 2003. The well-celebrated soul and blues queen makes amends here with what is one of the most blues-centered recordings in her expansive discography, bringing her big, no-nonsense voice and her feisty, proud woman's point of view to bear on classics, many identified with Chicago. The likes of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," Jimmy Reed's "Hush Hush," and Muddy Waters's "Got My Mojo Working" may be hackneyed choices, but she seizes each of a dozen as her own, and clearly, as she says herself, these are the blues songs that touch her the deepest. No argument here. --Frank-John Hadley
Customer Reviews:
Etta at Her Best.......2007-07-07
With the renewed interest in blues by a new generation, Etta James in recent years has published many of the old favorites on fresh CDs. This recording is an excellent example of the old-time blues that should please all fans, young and old. I am a blues fan and an Etta James junkie. I have always claimed that she is the best that ever was. Since I bagan going blind, my appreciation of her magnificent voice is only heightened. Any of her recordings--old or new, studio or live performances, are essential for a true appreciation of the genre. However, this CD, in addition to being educational, great example of the genre, funky song choicees and of excellent quality, is simply fun.
So Sad.......2007-06-25
I can't even believe that this was actually Etta James. She must have been having a very bad day when she cut this one. Her voice is empty, weak, emotionless and she sounds exactly the same in every single track. The best part of it are her sons who play back-up. I know what she is capable of so I am just chalking it up to illness or something. I don't even want to listen to it again.
ETTA IS OUT DOING THE BEST BLUES CLASSICS.......2007-02-28
YOU HAVE HEARD ALL THESE SONG'S BEFORE BUT NOT LIKE MISS ETTA JAMES CAN DO THEM. I LOVE ALL THE 50'S AND 60'S ETTA LOVE CLASSICS BUT THE BLUES IS HER CALLING. SHE IS THE BEST LIVE PERFORMER I KNOW, HER LEGS MAY BE A LITTLE SHAKEY BUT YOU WILL NEVER HEAR HER SING ANY SONG THE SAME WAY TWICE SOMETIMES SHE'LL SLOW SONG DOWN AND MAKE YOU CRY. AND SOMETIMES SHE WILL GET FUNKY ON A LOVE SONG AND MAKE IT RAUNCHY SO THAT YOU ARE LAUGHING AND SMILING INSTEAD OF CRYING. I SWEAR SHE CAN READ THE CROWD SO WELL SHE KNOWS WHAT THE AUDIENCE HAS IN THERE HEART'S AND SHE WILL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED. IT'S A PRIVATE SHOW FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN THE ROOM. BUY THIS ALBUM AND PLAY IT WHEN YOU ARE IN ANY KIND OF MOOD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Darvin Deva Queen.......2007-02-07
It is only a few artists that can evolve from one genre to another and capture and create in each one. This album proves that with time Etta ages like fine wine. She is light and sassy in the beginning but smooth and brilliant as time goes by.

Whether she sings string-laden pop ballads, lively soul, or gritty electric blues, James's high-powered, enormously expressive voice displays a knack for passionate blues inflections. Emotionally charged ballads including "At Last" and "All I Could Do is Cry" find James blasting through the orchestra with unearthly wails and moans. "If I Can't Have You," a duet with Harvey Fuqua, drops the orchestra in favor of horn-driven R&B and "Something's Got a Hold On Me" is a gospel-flavored romp reminiscent of Ray Charles. A live version of Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" shows her raunchiest Chicago-blues style, and "In the Basement," with Sugar Pie DeSanto, is a funky workout. Also here are three classics from her soul-drenched 1967 Muscle Shoals sessions. --Marc Greilsamer

A DECENT MIX OF ETTA.......2007-01-31
now i prefer her earlier stuff, but a lot of that later stuff is pretty enjoyable to listen to. if you wanna get into what etta did, i would recommend this one. however, if it was me, i would go for either her early albums when she was starting out and was hungry (ROLL WITH HENRY). however, if you become an instant fan by her more recent stuff, then check this out and see why people see her as an icon (who should get more credit along with ruth brown and baby washington).

Good Rockin' Mama!.......2007-06-12
How do you cover an artist with nearly 50 years worth of recorded material
on one disc? Use this as an example. With so many different collections of artists like Ms. Etta James out there, it can be a complicated task of what to choose. Others may focus on one particular area of her recording career, but this one goes all the way back to her 1955 smash of "The Wallflower (Dance With Me Henry)" all the way up to a 2004 recording of a blues recording "The Sky Is Crying" in which her sons take part in the production. Many of the well known Argo/Cadet sides from the '60s are represented like "At Last", "Something's Got A Hold On Me", and "Tell Mama" and then moving on to her gutsy and gritty rendition of "Take It To The Limit" from 1978, which was so chilling and moving, and ending up in the '80s and '90s with some Nashville recordings containing a country tinge to them as well as a Gershwin tune "The Man I Love", and Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Etta had such a versatile style from cool, refined, and seductive to passionate, gutsy and rollicking. If only some young female singers today could take a lesson from her; she could do it all, and is still doing it today. That's why this package can do wonders for somebody who wants to know which great artists from the past are still performing today and wants to see a dynamic balance and mix of different material in a career-spanning perspective. This one certainly has it. With so much material from her earlier years, some things may be missing, but as stated before, with one disc in a complete career overview theme in mind, the debate rests on what really is essential in representing the artist's entire career. All 23 tunes are very enjoyable. If you're new to Etta, this a great place to start.
Super Fine Lady of Rock and Roll, Blues and Soul.......2007-02-21
I've been a fan Of Etta James's singing ever since hearing her sing "My Dearest Darling" and my true, true, favorite of all her songs, "At Last". I think she's a rare and very touching soul singer. Her singing always has touched my heart and soul in a very emotional way. This lady sings feelings and emotions that you know she's really lived through. And when she sings happy more upbeat songs she rocks and rolls your heart too. In fact I did'nt even know that that was her singing "Dance With Me Henry" back in the fifties. Of course I was just about nine or ten and I was just discovering all the great rock and roll music of the fifties. That's why when I hear her singing "Something's Got A Hold On Me" "Tell Mama" , "All I Could Do Is Cry" "Stop The Wedding" whew that girl's singing still blows me away. Etta has that powerful voice that even in her later years can still sway your heart just listen to her version of the Eagles "Take It To The Limit" or Otis Reading's "I've Been Loving You Too Long", her voice is a little deeper but can still grab your soul. God Bless Etta James she's a national treasure.
What a Singer.......2006-01-18
Etta James is Queen of the blues in my book. I remember the first time I herd her sing her signature song "At Last", I just had to find out who she was, and if there were any more CDs by Etta James. I found them all here on Amazon. I bought every one of them so far. When Ms. james sings in her soft voice, my wife and I just want to cuddle up together and watch the sun go down slowly. When Etta sings in her bawdy blues voice the listner will find him or herself wishing they were in a somkey blues joint sipping on whiskey and chugging a beer. You just can't keep you feet still when Etta James sings the blues.
This collection of songs is good for the beginner, or for a person who does not want to delve very far in to Ms. James music. When you get hooked on "The Queen of the Blues" you'll need to check out the Chess collection recordings of Ms. Etta James.

Tell Mama: The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions.......2006-11-10
Not my favorite piece, but Etta always pleases.
Lord Have Mercy.......2006-03-16
Tell me mamma... I love this CD. I think it should come with a warning label. "Caution: You will wake up the neighbors". Buy it. I can't play it quiet... I can't not sing along with it... I can't stop dancing when it is on.
A wonderful, varied soul record.......2005-06-11
More soul than blues, Etta James' "Tell Mama" originally came out in 1968 as a twelve-track LP. And here it is in its remastered 2001 incarnation, bolstered by no fewer than ten bonus tracks which earns the reissue the subtitle "The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions".
The sound is terrific, clear and realistic, as is the production by Rick Hall. And those who feel that Etta James' Chess recordings featured too many violins and not enough power need to pick up "Tell Mama" right away!
The original album was top-notch in its own right, featuring the all-time classic soul ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind", excellent covers of Ed Townsend's "I'm Gonna Take What He's Got", Otis Redding's "Security" and Jimmy Hughes' "Don't Lose Your Good Thing", and a couple of driving up-tempo numbers, most notably Don Covay's "Watch Dog" and the magnificent title track.
Etta James never sounded better than during these four 1967-1968 sessions, and the various musicians never set a foot (or a finger) wrong.
There really isn't a single weak track among the twelve songs originally issued. Even practically unknown songs like the swaggering soul stomper "My Mother In Law" and the slow "It Hurts Me So Much", which have never been covered by anyone and don't appear on any of Etta James' compilation albums, are highly enjoyable, and Etta's rendition of "Just A Little Bit" (AKA "I Just Want A Little Bit") is a supremely funky slice of soul-blues.
And the bonus tracks aren't rejects by any means. They include "Almost Persuaded", "Misty", the rocking "You Took It", a very good interpretation of Sonny Bono's "I Got You Babe", and two soulful takes on "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", a song which has been interpreted by everybody from Aretha Franklin to the Flying Burrito Brothers.
I'm no big Etta James fan, actually, but this album is something special. I completely fell for it the first time I put it on, and to me "Tell Mama" is the best record Etta James has ever made, one of the finest, most cohesive soul and R&B records of the late 60s.
You really ought to give it a listen.
What a re-issue should be!.......2005-02-23
In addition to the 12 re-mastered original tracks, there are 10 more (including 2 versions of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"). There are some good songs here that are not included on either "Her Best" or "The Chess Box", including "Watch Dog", "My Mother In Law", "It Hurts Me So Much", "I've Gone Too Far", and her funked-out Soulful rendition of "I Got You Babe". This is a must-have for Etta fans.
Blistering, bluesy R&B.......2003-01-15
The ever-vivacious Etta James is one of R&B's true greats, an artist whose work will always stand the test of time and this album, originally released in 1968, is one of her best-known and most powerful. More dynamic than expressive, James was a gal who clearly knew how to rock, capable of the same sort of expansiveness as Jimmy Rushing or even jump blues shouters such as Wynonie Harris, but also with a touch of the sleekness seen in Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald. The "Tell Mama" album is a flawless, timeless crowd pleaser, packed with upbeat, compact material, a tailormade showcase for James' mousy snarl. Backed by the best of the Muscle Shoals crew, this is music that can't easily be faulted; with ten bonus tracks added on for good measure, this CD edition is pretty hard to resist.

Throughout a near-50-year career that has seen few low points, at least professionally, Etta James has established herself as one of music's most talented R&B, blues, and jazz singers. On All the Way, she attempts to tackle the easy-listening genre with a diverse set of ballads that span the Frank Sinatra-approved title track to covers of songs by Prince, Simply Red, John Lennon, and R. Kelly. Appearing after two roof-raising albums--2003's Let's Roll and 2004's explosive Blues to the Bone--this is a jarring change-up. Amidst schmaltzy production, cushy trumpet, and mushy keyboard strings, James settles into a Sunday-morning-coffee-and-newspaper approach.
Occasionally the force of James's distinctive, compelling voice overpowers the syrupy backing, but, for the most part, the plain-vanilla arrangements diminish and even enervate her typically spicy vocals. Unlike the classic "At Last," on which James pushed the romantic song into overdrive, she remains in neutral for the majority of these tracks. There's no interplay with the band, and she makes a few missteps, such as the lackluster version of West Side Story's "Somewhere" (that goes nowhere). Those seeking low-key yet accomplished background music versions of James Brown's "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" will find this just what the elevator operator ordered. The rest of James's fans may feel the woman who could once sing the phone book and make it sound riveting has dialed a wrong number. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
All the Way - Etta James.......2006-11-10
I wanted this CD quite badly and was somewhat disappointed. I have been an Etta James fan for over 40 years. Her voice is much deeper and throaty, but the selections of songs just weren't to my liking. Hope her next one is better. One great review is how great she looks.
Etta takes a diverse chance!.......2006-10-02
Only Etta would take on a diverse song selection like this, now some of the arrangements are a little simple but they work, Etta's voice is still strong and she brings her unique approach to each of the songs... 'Calling You'(which has never been a favorite of mine) Etta makes it work, just listen to Etta mimic a trumpet and then ends the song on a funny note, "Purple Rain" a tough choice is turned into slow blues number, "Stop On By", "Strung Out", "Holding Back The Years" are the best cuts on here, "Somewhere" is good but ends to soon. I hope Etta sticks with this direction but on the next cd have the arrangements more R&B\Soulful.
Still got the voice - And still needs a good producer.......2006-09-21
Etta never fails to deliver in the vocals. Gutteral bombast, sweet soul, gospel, blues, the lady is a living legend. But this album, like the last album "produced" by her son, is a nightmare. Chessy arrangments, tinkly bass, poor sound all around. She is a fierce mother and I'm sure she thinks her kids know best, but there is a reason why labels pair vocalists with the right producer. Should Etta get the chance to work with a fresh ear at the deck, she wouldn't need the novelty of some of the song choices.
PS - 200lbs lighter and she remains the best live performer; blues, R/B, soul, whatever, in the world.
ETTA MEETS PURPLE RAIN.......2006-06-27
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
In my youth I gave Etta James' music short shrift because to be honest I did not like the so-called 'bubble gum' music genre that I believed she represented. In retrospect I do not think I was wrong to reject her early offerings, having replayed her early work recently. What got me interested in Etta was hearing her do The Jealous Kind and I'd Rather Be Blind at the Newport Folk Festival years ago. These songs reflect a more bluesy, gospelly tradition that my tastes can appreciate. The selections here while not exactly in that same vain do come close, especially Purple Rain. These are mainly covers that are tastefully done and reflect both her powerful voice and range of interests. You may not like all the selections but there are more than enough to keep you interested.
A Quiet Beer Before Bed.......2006-06-04
A late night, a storm and a quiet beer before bed set the stage for this new jewel by Etta James. "Who knows where the road will lead us? Only a fool would say," the title track starts out, bringing that familiar refrain. You could fill an album just with versions of this Sammy Cahn classic: Sam Cooke, Bobby Darin, Celine Dion, Michael Feinstein, Billie Holiday, Brenda Lee, Julie London, Patti Page, Gene Pitney, Lou Rawls, Neil Sedaka and of course Frank Sinatra. Etta fills the stirring track with a slow baked certainty that comes across as utterly real. Bobby Womack's "Stop On By" swings and pops to life with Etta's touch. Etta's version of the "West Side Story" classic "Somewhere" is soft & warm and builds with Etta's voice teetering uncertainly, even though hopeful. Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years" fits Etta theme-wise. One professional critic felt that Etta didn't add much to John Lennon's classic "Imagine." For a song that's been recorded by Chet Atkins, Average White Band, Joan Baez, Blues Traveller, Eva Cassidy, Ray Charles, Randy Crawford, Richie Havens, Mark Knopfler, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, Sophia, Andy Williams, Neil Young AND others, maybe it's hard to do a reading that is totally unique; but Etta's version stirs me with its quiet certainty, and the elegance of the arrangement that allows this classic melody to shine through her, "Imagine no possessions; I wonder if you can, No need for greed or hunger, a Brotherhood of Man." Can this song ever be sung enough? The arrangement on R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" is slowed for Etta here. One of the jewels on this collection is Etta's treatment of the James Brown classic "It's A Man's World" adding some flamenco touches. Prince's "Purple Rain" shines under Etta's touch. Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is another lovely classic that might have fared better by keeping up the tempo, but is silky smooth. Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and Jeff Buckley all recorded "Calling You" from the film score of "Baghdad Cafe." Etta's version is slow and sweet with Ronnie Buttacavoli's trumpet flavoring the arrangement. Any set of familiar tunes will invite its share of comparisons. This sweet set crowds my changer @ the end of a hard day. Enjoy!

Music to enjoy in any circumstance. She has such a sweet voice I'm glad I took the time to find this CD.

Loved this CD. And her version of "Don't Go To Strangers" for my money is even better than that of Etta Jones.

Etta James--still a queen of the blues........2005-10-09
No one can deny Etta James's legendary status as a queen of the blues, and here, in this 1995 recording, she still wails with the best. Surrounded by extraordinary musicians--especially the brilliant Cedar Walton on piano and Eddie Harris and Herman Riley on tenor sax--she turns standards into big, bold, assertive statements, capitalizing on her lower register (much lower than when she was younger). Full of passion, she proclaims her songs, as much as she sings them, using volume and her somewhat harsh voice, instead of sweetness and subtlety, to convey her messages.
"Don't Go to Strangers" is her joke. Often confused with Etta Jones, she begins the CD with Jones's most famous song, giving it her own style and interpretation. Jo Stafford would never recognize what James does with "Teach Me Tonight," an R & B treatment that features one of Eddie Harris's great sax solos. "Fool That I Am," one of her best songs, includes an unusual accompaniment, almost completely limited to the flugelhorn of Ronnie Buttacavoli and guitar of Josh Sklair, who have terrific solos, and one can hear Etta in the background offering them encouragement.
The best song on the CD is "Willow Weep for Me," a stunning song which she begins a capella and sings as if she were one of the originators of old-time blues. Here she keeps the tempo slow, letting out all her emotion in pure blues style, the accompaniment kept simple and very much in the background.
With jazz and the blues embedded deep in her soul, James is still a fine interpreter, and the musicians with whom she surrounds herself are top notch. Her voice, now very deep and dark, is still fine in the middle and upper ranges. Unfortunately, she sometimes misses notes in the lower range (particularly noticeable on "Time After Time" and "My Funny Valentine"), especially when she tries to sing the lowest notes quietly, rather than at full volume, and she often slides up and down to hit her notes. Because of this, newcomers to this lady and long-time fans might prefer to look for some of the new releases of her earlier work, such as "At Last," a remastered version of her 1960 debut. n Mary Whipple
I Love It, I Love It, I Love It!.......2000-08-22
I play this cd so much in the car, my daughter knows ALL the words to most of the songs and she's only five years old. Etta's rendition of "Willow Weep For Me" is "The Bomb"! I love it when she adds what I call, her little "personal punctuations" of "Yeah!", "uh-uh", or "that's right" as her band plays. Her style is earthy, soulful and unique.
I purchased "Mystery Lady" not long ago and it's getting equal play time with this cd. (Did I mention that I love it?) Etta is something special!

Amazon.com essential recording
The real mystery is why it took so long for Etta James to win a Grammy. But this great American vocalist claimed her first statue by paying tribute to another grand singer. James's versions of Billie Holiday-identified tunes like "Don't Explain," "You've Changed," "Lover Man," and "The Man I Love" are the best readings of Lady Day's signatures in a generation. Pianist Cedar Walton leads the seven-piece band in spare and graceful arrangements faithful to the mainstream jazz sound of the '40s and '50s, which gives James ample room to exercise her soaring range and deliver a dazzling, seductive, and warm tour de force. --Ted Drozdowski

Wonderful, Simply Wonderful.......2003-12-24
I was surprised that I would love this CD so much because I had heard of Etta James but I didn't know to much about her or her music (she was a little before my time). I have to say this CD is timeless. I love the words of the songs and the richness of her voice. Etta truly makes me wish I could have been around to hear Billie do the honors herself.
The only woman to do Lady Day some justice..........2003-06-02
'Ya heard? I'm'a make this as short as possible. Etta James has one'a the mos' passionate an' wrenching voices in all blues n' soul music an' when she takes on THESE numbers, you hear that an' them some. As a big fan'a Billie Holiday not many singer could give much credibility to performin' the songs that she made famous. But this jus' works. Ms. James, rather than adopting the ballads with her own style, jus' adopted a DIFFERENT style than she normally does so that she can sing 'The Man I Love', 'Embraceable You', an' 'The Very Thought of You' with all the relaxed subtlety that Lady Day did. With a nice jazz backing section, she lays the loveliness on thick. Strictly fans'a her work only may not be as enthralled by this set, but if your musical tastes cover the whole spectrum from blues to soul to this ol' traditional-style jazz, then definitely check this out. This is one'a the most earnest, sincere, an' well-done tribute albums of all time. Ms. Billie would be proud.

You'll enjoy this.......2002-12-12
If you adore Billie and love Etta then you should be in heaven! I bought this on impulse and consider this one of my most treasured CDs. All the wonderful "old school" lyrics - the way they don't write them anymore - but with the full, rich sound of modern technology. Great tribute to Lady Day by a legend who can blow away a room full of Britneys!
My Favorite CD.......2001-04-21
I was always liked Etta's, A Sunday Kind of Love, so I was checking Amazon for CD's by her. I sure picked a great one. Mystery Lady is my favorite CD. I play it almost everyday. Her voice is so clear and strong. I recommend it to everyone.

Few vocalists can muster the power and sass of Etta James when she's rocking the mike on classic R&B tunes like "Tell Mama" or "Something's Got a Hold on Me." But James also had a way with a ballad, and her sensitive readings of songs such as "At Last" and "All I Could Do Was Cry" made her a fan favorite in the early '60s. Had she not been sidelined for a while by an addiction to heroin, today we might think of James, not Aretha, as the Queen of Soul. Because this set offers only 11 cuts, it's generally inferior to Her Best: The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection, which boasts 20 tunes. Still, it's a satisfying intro to the delightful "Miss Peaches" nonetheless. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
THERE ARE BETTER SELECTIONS, BUT THIS I DO LOVE.......2007-01-31
for those who prefer etta's early material, this is essential. though there are better selctions out there, this one will surely satisfy. i wish that they put IN THE BASEMENT on here, but hey, a lot of the etta i dig is included here.
her early stuff.......2006-11-11
I enjoy listening to Etta James' early recordings a lot more than what she has been doing for the past few years. Her voice was a lot sharper and crisper then, now it is more gravelly. Plus the productions and arrangments of the recordings were a bit better. Having said that, I am giving this CD 4 stars, not five, because there are only 11 songs on it, and I can think of many more songs by Etta James that would have to be included on a "Best Of" release, but for a budget CD, it's a greatlisten.
A fiery and passionate Ms. Etta James delivers! .......2006-05-22
Etta James was and continues to be one of the greatest female vocalists of her time. Her voice is rich, vibrant and capable of conveying every emotion there is on the planet. This CD is a great choice if you are looking for a budget priced introduction to Etta's work.
Etta could--and can--sing just about any type of song. Whether it's about the joy and fulfillment of a new found true love ("At Last,") the angst of being left behind for a new lover ("Stop The Wedding," "I'd Rather Go Blind,)" or the frustration of getting caught up and used by other people who are just playing games ("Pushover,"), Etta delivers an incendiary and unforgettable performance. Her heart is completely committed to each song on this CD; and my only complaint (which costs it one star) is that it doesn't have as much material as it should have. I agree with other reviewers who write that the CD entitled Her Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection is a better choice if you don't mind spending the three extra bucks.
Right from the start, Etta possessed the capacity to smoothly handle many different types of music and this built for her a sizable repertoire. She could do a passionate, traditional style ballad ("At Last,") a song influenced by gospel ("Something's Got A Hold On Me," "All I Could Do Was Cry,") or really rock when she recorded the song "Tell Mama." Awesome!
The quality of the sound is great; Erick Labson at MCA Music Studios did a superb job of digitally remastering this song set. The liner notes boast a lengthy essay about Etta written by Joseph F. Laredo. You get the song credits and recording dates for each song--a nice plus! There are a few really nice photos of Etta taken in the 1960's as well.
All in all, this is not a bad CD--IF you want just a starter and you prefer to stick within a budget. If you really want a more comprehensive view of Etta's talent then try the CD entitled Her Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection. Either way you go, however, one thing is clear: Etta's talent is abundantly clear on either CD and we are better off because of her fine contributions to the arts!
Great For Starters, But Better Choices Are Out There.......2004-09-06
I've always looked at "greatest hits" albums as "starter" albums.
A great way to sample the artists work, then decide whether you want to further explore (ie purchase)more from their body of work. This collection from Etta James serves the above premise to some degree. Although it is somewhat short in length (a trait common to all the 20th Century Masters releases) and doesn't contain some of her better "blues" work, it is decent way to sample Etta James's music; especially for someone on a budget. However, if you can afford a few extra bucks, I would highly recommend the "Her Best : The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection" ablum over this one. For a few extra bucks, you get 9 more tracks, better sound and better packaging. But for less than 5 bucks on zShops, this is not a bad purchase.
Love it! Love It! Love It!.......2004-06-15
Etta is my favorite Lady Of Blues by far. I bought this cd for the song,"At Last," but my favorite is, "Trust In Me." It WILL be played at my wedding.
She is amazing. Order this cd now!
