Though Cold's music has become more melodic and accessible, that doesn't mean that they've turned over a new leaf. Scratch the surface and you'll find these Florida soreheads are still mad at the world, but happily able to channel that rage into compelling, brainy head-banging. In fact, it wouldn't be going too far to call them post-alt-metal Beck, what with their collage of disparate sounds and effects and their self-referential declarations, mimicking the diminutive singer's early outings: "I'm a loner / I'm a loser / I'm a winner in my own mind / I'm a bad one / I'm a good one / I'm a sick one with a smile." But they're not just a hardened bunch of nihilists. Their bleak worldview is rescued by a staunch sense of self and the quaint but sweet notion of the healing power of love. The affection of a good, but flawed woman is pervasive on the album's 13 tracks. this album is very powerful yet slows down at the right time. And for those that are patient, 17 minutes after kill the music industry goes off, gone away plays.
Another Masterpiece from Cold.......2006-09-19
This was definitely one of the best albums released in 2003. One of the things that really sets Cold apart from some of their nu-metal brethren is the phenomenal musicianship that continually shines through in each release. Sam McCandless on drums is the standout, in a group of quality musicians.
The album kicks off strong with a song about taking your own path in life, "Remedy" and never lets up. There isn't a single bad track on the album. The music is a bit softer and more accessible than on previous albums, but the lyrics retain the same dark mournful soul that has characterized Cold from day one.
While the album is solid throughout, with one great track after another the highlights of the album are definitely "Remedy", as I said earlier a heavy track about doing your own thing in life, "Suffocate, w/Sierra Swan", a slightly lighter fare that is highlighted by the guest vocal of Sierra Swan, "Stupid Girl", their hit single that was co-written by Rivers Cuamo, "Wasted Years", a lighter song questioning the value of life, "Rain Song", a beautiful piece about suicide and "Kill The Music Industry", a thunderous ode to the sad state of music.
If you have ever wondered what redneck gothic music would sound like, what The Cure or The Smiths would sound like if they made a great HARD ROCK album, "Year Of The Spider" is the answer!
In addition, the DVD is a great piece to have if you're a fan of the band. Some great candid interviews, the full length video to "Stupid Girl" and some great behind the scenes footage.
I unsderstand the ways of Cold.......2006-08-20
I may be a little late discovering the true power of Cold. I was a little familiar with them but had no idea how talented and powerful they really were. It has all changed due some issues I had in a relationship and the opportunity to buy this CD came along. I felt like they were talking to me thru there music.
"Cure my Tragedy" just broke me down. All of the songs on here move me in many ways. These guy are amazing.
Give yourself a chance to feel how Cold really moves the mind.
Kinda soft for Cold but still awesome.......2006-06-21
This is Cold's third album, and they seem to soften up with each one. But these guys make great music no matter how they sound. The best song on this cd is ''Stupid Girl.'' My other favorites are ''Remedy'', ''Suffocate''', '' Wasted Years'', and ''Kill the Music Industry.'' The recording quality of this album is better than the previous two releases and it is WAY easier to understand what Scooter is saying. There is almost no screaming in this album, so super hard rockers probably won't enjoy it that much. It is good pure rock but it can get annoying at some parts. That's the only reason i didn't give this album a 5 star rating. However it is easy to listen to if you are in the right mood. There is some explicit language in this cd but there is an edited version for those of you that do not like cussing. Overall this is a fantastic album and a must-have for any Cold fan or any fans of good rock.
I Came Too Late to the Party, But I Wiill Party Hard With Cold! .......2006-04-23
It is a shame I didn't get this album when it first came out, but I suppose any time is better than no time at all. Allow me to go into how I actually FINALLY got turned on to Cold's unique, and spooky sound. Let's just say that a friend of mine showed me a link to a fan made "Animated Music Video" or AMV from a place called YouTube.com, it was one set to a Rammstein song, and it did kick ass. However, I felt like seeing what was on there for Fatal Frame, so I typed that in, watched a few of the videos there, wasn't exactly impressed. But then a video titled with the caption "Pray For Rain" tantalized me.
What was it you ask? It was a video using in-game clips from Fatal Frame III: The Tormented set to "Rain Song", which happened to be on this album and I didn't realize it at the time. As I listened to the song and watched the video, I was just completely and utterly blown away. Not only by the music, but by how this person was able to capture the emotion of both the music and the video at the same time. I was absolutely moved to tears by the whole thing.
I immediately contacted this person and thanked them for making that video, and finally really getting me into Cold. I used to think of them as "just another Staind clone", and lemme tell you folks, I HATE Staind, so essentially these guys were associated with them in my books (they are good friends after all), but oh how wrong I was. Unlike Staind, they are emotional but without being ridiculously depressing, and in my books they're much better musicians too.
I was so impressed that I decided to buy "13 Ways to Bleed on Stage" and "Year of the Spider" in one fell swoop. I listened to both albums all the way through in one night, and while 13 Ways was indeed impressive, sporting some good tracks like "No One", "Just Got Wicked", among many others. Year of the Spider ups it in production value, and overall feeling from the tracks.
There are a couple filler tracks, but overall, the album is just fantastic. Aside from the single "Stupid Girl", which is not my favorite song on the album, there's some good ones with the opener "Remedy", "Suffocate", "Cure My Tragedy (A Letter to God)", "Whatever You Became", and "Change the World". And the rest are mainly average, but definitely listenable.
But in my books, the standout track is "Rain Song". All the other tracks on the album are great, but this one really, REALLY took it to a whole new level. Scooter Ward shows that he truly can sing, and that he DOES have a beautiful voice. Before people ask "WTF? Beautiful?!! He's a man for crying out loud!"
Allow me to explain that part, you see, I recognize when someone has a beautiful voice, and I use that word to describe their voice regardless of whether or not they're male or female. And yes, you heard me correctly folks, I said that Scooter Ward really has a beautiful voice, and that "Rain Song" really brings it out. When it comes to showing off his pipes, he proves that he's indeed quite raw and emotional with the lyrics.
The rest of the musicianship is gravy in my books, but knowing that Kelly Hayes and Terry Balsamo left the band for other projects (come on Terry, what's the matter with you? Why Evanescence? If there's a band that needs to break up, it's that one.), it kinda saddens me that we might not hear anything like this again.
Overall, I feel that Year of the Spider really was a step in the right direction for Cold, and I am glad I finally picked up this strange bedfellow of a masterpiece. Anyone who even remotely likes a band with a fresh and unique sound should check Cold out. I promise that you won't be disappointed. Thank you.

The album kicks off strong with a song about taking your own path in life, "Remedy" and never lets up. There isn't a single bad track on the album. The music is a bit softer and more accessible than on previous albums, but the lyrics retain the same dark mournful soul that has characterized Cold from day one.

Give yourself a chance to feel how Cold really moves the mind.
Kinda soft for Cold but still awesome.......2006-06-21
This is Cold's third album, and they seem to soften up with each one. But these guys make great music no matter how they sound. The best song on this cd is ''Stupid Girl.'' My other favorites are ''Remedy'', ''Suffocate''', '' Wasted Years'', and ''Kill the Music Industry.'' The recording quality of this album is better than the previous two releases and it is WAY easier to understand what Scooter is saying. There is almost no screaming in this album, so super hard rockers probably won't enjoy it that much. It is good pure rock but it can get annoying at some parts. That's the only reason i didn't give this album a 5 star rating. However it is easy to listen to if you are in the right mood. There is some explicit language in this cd but there is an edited version for those of you that do not like cussing. Overall this is a fantastic album and a must-have for any Cold fan or any fans of good rock.
I Came Too Late to the Party, But I Wiill Party Hard With Cold! .......2006-04-23
It is a shame I didn't get this album when it first came out, but I suppose any time is better than no time at all. Allow me to go into how I actually FINALLY got turned on to Cold's unique, and spooky sound. Let's just say that a friend of mine showed me a link to a fan made "Animated Music Video" or AMV from a place called YouTube.com, it was one set to a Rammstein song, and it did kick ass. However, I felt like seeing what was on there for Fatal Frame, so I typed that in, watched a few of the videos there, wasn't exactly impressed. But then a video titled with the caption "Pray For Rain" tantalized me.
What was it you ask? It was a video using in-game clips from Fatal Frame III: The Tormented set to "Rain Song", which happened to be on this album and I didn't realize it at the time. As I listened to the song and watched the video, I was just completely and utterly blown away. Not only by the music, but by how this person was able to capture the emotion of both the music and the video at the same time. I was absolutely moved to tears by the whole thing.
I immediately contacted this person and thanked them for making that video, and finally really getting me into Cold. I used to think of them as "just another Staind clone", and lemme tell you folks, I HATE Staind, so essentially these guys were associated with them in my books (they are good friends after all), but oh how wrong I was. Unlike Staind, they are emotional but without being ridiculously depressing, and in my books they're much better musicians too.
I was so impressed that I decided to buy "13 Ways to Bleed on Stage" and "Year of the Spider" in one fell swoop. I listened to both albums all the way through in one night, and while 13 Ways was indeed impressive, sporting some good tracks like "No One", "Just Got Wicked", among many others. Year of the Spider ups it in production value, and overall feeling from the tracks.
There are a couple filler tracks, but overall, the album is just fantastic. Aside from the single "Stupid Girl", which is not my favorite song on the album, there's some good ones with the opener "Remedy", "Suffocate", "Cure My Tragedy (A Letter to God)", "Whatever You Became", and "Change the World". And the rest are mainly average, but definitely listenable.
But in my books, the standout track is "Rain Song". All the other tracks on the album are great, but this one really, REALLY took it to a whole new level. Scooter Ward shows that he truly can sing, and that he DOES have a beautiful voice. Before people ask "WTF? Beautiful?!! He's a man for crying out loud!"
Allow me to explain that part, you see, I recognize when someone has a beautiful voice, and I use that word to describe their voice regardless of whether or not they're male or female. And yes, you heard me correctly folks, I said that Scooter Ward really has a beautiful voice, and that "Rain Song" really brings it out. When it comes to showing off his pipes, he proves that he's indeed quite raw and emotional with the lyrics.
The rest of the musicianship is gravy in my books, but knowing that Kelly Hayes and Terry Balsamo left the band for other projects (come on Terry, what's the matter with you? Why Evanescence? If there's a band that needs to break up, it's that one.), it kinda saddens me that we might not hear anything like this again.
Overall, I feel that Year of the Spider really was a step in the right direction for Cold, and I am glad I finally picked up this strange bedfellow of a masterpiece. Anyone who even remotely likes a band with a fresh and unique sound should check Cold out. I promise that you won't be disappointed. Thank you.
