A Difficult Future
Editorial Reviews
Grooves Magazine, January 1, 2002
This group has...accomplished with analog synths what Sigur Ros and Godspeed have been doing with guitar and strings.
Product Description
With the signature horn-like and buzzing moog completely replacing the vocals, a shimmering foregrounded guitar unveiled from the depths of reverbs past, and the full integration of guest Wurlitzer and keyboard wizard, Jason Terchin, The Timeout Drawer have restated their sound. Tactful melodies guide you through corridors of pop refrains, moody sedation, ambient jazz sessions, heated emotionall fits and catchy anthem rock. These nine new, carefully structured songs lend an original subtext to the post-rock/electronic genre, with nods to the dry instrumentation and rock grandeur of Mogwai, the melancholic and heartfelt guitar work of early Cure, and the misinterpreted yet emotive jazz renderings of a 5th grade music class. Sad, yet optimistic and upbeat, ADF is a montage of emotional stirrings and daydreamed adventures...

Swimming in an ocean of sound.......2001-03-10
The swimmer by Helms is an artistic masterpiece. I love the way the bass lines intermingle with the guitar and the drums pull you in, creating a sound that envelopes your entire being. The lyrics are thought provoking and sung in a kind whimsical tone with occasional eruptions of feeling. I love track 3 the smallest world in the world, the sounds that come out of the gutiar are unlike anything I have ever heard before, creating a beautiful image in your head. Track 6 starts off like a wave of sound. By chance I happened to see them play in Richmond, VA and I was instantly hooked. I bought the CD and have not stopped playing it yet. If you are looking for a new sound to carry you into the next level this is definatly it. Try it out I am sure you will love it just as much as I do.

the heart of the machine.......2002-12-05
this is one record for which the adjectives "textured" and "intricate" seem inadequate.
beneath its sullen, robotic exterior and cascading electronic flourishes, this record succeeds mightily in expressing fundamentally human emotions and states of mind: unlimited possibility, regret, nostalgia, inspiration, uncertainty (hence the title, one might assume) and most of all hope.
two records into their career, the timeout drawer continues to create the thinking person's soundtrack to the mundanities and small miracles of everyday life. listen and understand.
simply put, great album........2002-04-16
i stumbled onto this band because of thier label (some odd pilot) who has released other stuff i dug. this is a great album, soaring, and anthemic. the reason i shorted it one star was because i kept wanting the songs to keep going, keep building. but they max out just shy of where i want them to. its like wanting to visit europe and only making it to montreal. close, but not quite ;) it might be a limitation of the synths, and the loss of dynamic that can come from instruments of that nature. either way a fine release, that im happy to own. the comparisons to sigur ros and godspeed are acceptable, but id liken them more to TNT era tortoise. simply because they have a more clinical sound, very clean and precise and not quite as emotive as sigur ros. i recommend it, and look forward to future endeavors of thiers.
