Hmmm... this one was, first of all, not nicely marketed. The real title of this album, as released in the 80's, is ''Lou Reed Live''. Its content is no more than rests from the ''Rock & Roll Animal'' sessions, which despite of being his best-selling album is not EVEN a register of one of his best live performances. The first time I saw this item announced here, with no cover picture and the 'live' thing excluded from the title, I instantly bought it hoping that it was a compilation of extended versions and that I would, for instance, get the complete sax session of ''Walk On The Wild Side'' and other nice stuff for freakie fans. But this has not been the case, and due to the misleading title I got a 3rd unnecessary copy of ''Lou Reed Live''. If you really know what you're getting here (so-so Reed live performances), then go ahead and complete your collection. Otherwise go check ''Take No Prisoners'' for the raw, real acid Lou or ''Perfect Night live in London'', ''Animal Serenade'' or ''Lou reed live Italy'' for more anthological live performances.

The searing guitar work alone is worth the price. This CD is the necessary companion to Reed's "Rock 'n' Roll Animal."

I was pleased to hear about this album because Rock & Roll Animal is one of my favorite "live" albums of all time. If not one of my favorite of all time period! The musicians on that album are great, especially the bass player. My only complaint was that it didn't seem long enough. Then a friend told me he thought there was another album that contained the rest of the show. This was before I had internet access, so it was hard to find what I was searching for, espesially without a name for the album. I finally found it and the name said it all "Lou Reed Live" If your a big of a fan as I am of Rock & Roll Animal then you'll love this. It has all the songs that you might have imagined or wished were on Rock & Roll Animal, it was like coming back to the concert after a beer & bathroom break. As I said it has the same great musicians on it & Lou's singing couldn't be more emotional. The sound quality isn't up to todays standards but that's what I think gives it that great 70's "live" sound. The only thing that would make this album better is if they would package it as a 2 disc set. That would be a great introduction for any listener to Lou's genius. If your not a fan of live albums I'd suggest "Transformer & Berlin" for a great start. Both of those albums have songs represented here, as well as some of his work with The Velvet Underground. If you've purchased this c.d. grab your beer, take a seat & enjoy the show!

    This is a very sleazy record company trick of repackaging music and get unwary fans to buy the same thing twice.

    There is a whole series of these "Extended Versions" CD's from BMG Special Products. All they have done is repackaged material from a group's live album or albums. They don't even include all of the songs from the original album. Plus the packaging is very cheap and there are no liner notes.

    Beware of anything that comes from BMG Special Products. If you are any kind of fan of the band, you probably already own it.

        THIS IS A SLEAZY RECORD COMPANY TRICK TO STEAL YOUR MONEY.

        BMG record company has relased a whole series of "Extended Versions" CD's. They take some songs off of a previous released live albums and repackage it in a very deceptive way. The packaging is cheap and there are no liner notes, so you don't know the source of the music. If you are any kind of fan of the group, you probably already own the original live CD and then you get excited when you see this CD, buy and then find out you just wasted your money on something you already own.

        Also deceptive is the titles "Extended Versions". In most cases, these songs are just live versions that are about the same length as the original studio versions.

        Beware of anything from BMG Special Products. It is almost always repackaged music with deceptive packaging, with the sole purpose of stealing your money. If they were honest, they would include notes about the source material so you knew what you were getting.

        Listen to these other reviewers who say this is kind of a ripoff. It's just the King Biscuit Flower Hour live show in different order minus about two songs. I actually saw the POWER tour on two occasions in early 1987, and on this IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS tour they don't seem to be playing as tightly or as good as they did on the previous tour. Still they are KANSAS, and they never seem to give a bad show, but still they could have been much better. They were so great on the POWER tour that's why I had to see them a few weeks later when they were playing about 90 miles away from me. Don't even bother with this waste of a live album, when you can have the extra two songs and the songs in the correct order on the KING BISCUIT offering. Like one of the other reviewers said, BMG is just trying to cash in a bit with this Encore Collection.

        Now don't get me wrong, I an a HUGE Kansas fan. But this album is a rip off! It's the King Biscuit Flower Hour album just re-ordered! Not a cool thing to do to Kansas fans. Looks like BMG was out to get some cash...

        Made in USA in 2000, Serial# 75517-45617-2, Playing Time 47:15

        This CD lifts tracks from the "King Biscuit Flower Hour" CD, and is missing 2 tracks: "Point Of Know Return", and an 11-minute version of "House On Fire", making this CD shorter by about 18 minutes.

        The album was recorded during the "In The Spirit Of Things" tour back in 1989, and features Ehart on drums, Greer on bass, Morse on guitar, Greg Robert on keyboards, Walsh on vocals, and Williams on guitar. Like most KBFH, the recording quality is impeccable. However, on this version, the tracks have been shuffled around, so some of the songs that originally segued into each other have sometimes been re-organized (why?).

        This is your only opportunity to hear live versions of "One Big Sky", "All I Wanted", "The Preacher", and the acoustic "T.O. Witcher".

        Unless you're on a very tight budget, go for the real thing: the KBFH version has liner notes, the tracks in the order in which they were originally performed, 2 extra tracks for a total CD playing time of 65:57. And I still don't understand why this series is called "Extended Versions"...

        If you already have the King Biscuit Hour CD that is Kansas recorded live in 1989, then you may want to stay away from this CD. It is the same concert, with the same songs as the KB Hour CD minus "Point of Know Return", and "House on Fire". If you do not have the KB hour CD, then you may be interested in getting this one. Along with the 2 missing tracks from the KB hour CD, it does not have the nice CD sleeve that the KB hour CD has, but if you are just into the music, this CD, if you don't have the other, is a great buy.

        LIVE from the OUTSKIRTS pays tribute to the great live albums of the 60's and 70's from the Allman Brother's LIVE at Filmore East, Jimi Hendrix's Live at Monterey, Santana, Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus, all the time keeping that deep blues roots going whether they're jamming over a New Orleans street beat, Willy Dixon's "Same Thing", or a John Scofield funk tune.

        This is simply one incredible disc. I tend to seek out Live recordings mainly, due to the raw, inspired, creative energy only found on those, and I must say that CYRIL LANCE: LIVE FROM THE OUTSKIRTS may very well rank up there with the best of them, those "definitive" Live recordings that we all dearly love. This is truly epic, world-class material that deserves a lot more attention than it currently has received.

        The band is caught on tape in top-notch shape, they are tight and talented, with incredible energy and excitement injected into every single performance. Neel's solid vocals and neo-Juliard-league piano add such a refined and sophisticated touch to the whole experience, and Cyril's guitar work is absolutely riveting. The instrumental sections just go on and on, the whole band pulsating as one balanced, cohesive organism, steadily increasing in energy and complexity, until you just think they HAVE to start winding down, but that's when they shift into high-gear and take off into the Stratosphere. Pure adrenalin rush! The material is a mixture of blues, blues/rock, funk, and soul (while eschewing all cliches), and should appeal to a very wide audience indeed.

        The digital recording and final mixdown is of impeccable quality. Rip as lossless AIFF to your iPod and enjoy the sonic purity.

        I cannot recommend this CD highly enough.

        5 out of 5 stars Cyril Lance- A True Innovator.......2004-10-02

        When Cyril Lance moved to North Carolina, the Old North State had a VERY good day.

        Lance is truly indefinable by genre, but is acknowledged as a true guitar virtuoso. He can play Blues as authentically as the masters and stacks up excellently against any of today's Jam Bands.

        Live from the Outskirts is as fine an example of capturing the essence of the artist's live performances as has come along in quite some while. The album sounds studio quality while capturing the energy of an Outskirts performance perfectly.

        Cyril has surrounded himself with some of the finest musicians in his adopted State. B-3 ace Dave McCracken can hang with anyone who has ever played the organ. Kelly Pace is the drummer who everyone wishes could be in his or her band and Bassist/singer Chris Carroll has the chops and voice that excite music lover.

        This is a perfect follow-up to Cyril's breakout release, Stranger in My House, a definate must-own release. Anyone who appreciates awesome guitar playing and exceptionally well crafted songs will love these two items.

        And on a personal note, Cyril is a wonderful person and an absolutely driven musician as well.

        I love Nazareth...But the quality of this recording sucks...It sounds like it was recorded inside a tin can...This is a shame because what could have been an excellent concert(recorded 2002)has been reduced to audio crap...Shame on BMG for this one...Nazareth deserves better...

        This compact disc can usually be found for $7 to $8 bucks. It is yet another version of the original KBFH show released in 1992. This version actually drops two tracks, from the original 12, to only 10. I'm sure the sound quality is no different. Besides, with the bad vocals on this (according every other review) I would not waste my time on it.
