Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars Smooth sounds..smoother voice.......2004-08-26

Walter's sax is so sweet but I think his voice is just as nice. The first several tunes are instrumental and have a different groove. There are other vocals tracks which are nice. The only tune I didn't care for was All I Want. But Suddently and Don't Know Why more than make up for it. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Love Precious Moments.......2003-11-08

I love "Precious Moments" . It has such a good beat to it . I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!!!.......2003-09-10

The CD is GREAT. Smooth Jazz, Nice Grooves and Walter does a Spectacular version of Norah Jones " Don't Know Why"!
Buy the CD, Smooth Jazz Fans!!!

5 out of 5 stars So smooth!.......2003-08-13

I originally bought this cd for the cut, All I Want which had a smooth r&b feel to it with a little hip hop thrown in via a nice rap track. All this interspersed with the smooth playing of Mr. Beasley makes this song "the jam". The other cuts are nice and have more of a jazz feel. Mr Beasley's great technique comes through on many of the songs and on the last cut, Over and Over, he just shows out. This was the first cd of his that I have listened to and he has immediately moved up the list of sax players I like to hear.

1 out of 5 stars I hate this disc.......2003-05-03

I love smooth jazz and while there are a couple of slick instrumental jazz tracks, the rest is junk to me. If you want to be a music group that does vocals, then promote yourself as that. This disc has too many vocal tracks for me. I wasted my money on this disc and its a shame because Walter Beasley is a great jazz musician.

3 out of 5 stars Some Goth Goodness Remains . . ........2006-03-08

If you are a ardent fan of Queens of the Stone Age (as I am), you should give this a serious listen and suspend disbelief when you do. QOTSA's music lends itself well to strings arrangements because of the harmonizing that (I think) is one of the most interesting aspects of the band's music. It's heavy, gothic, and really subtly textured even with the driving guitar. I think that Homme's and Lanegan's vocals (sometimes) have a certain sweetness that contrasts with the music that strings evoke as an instrument - in a sense.
While some of the covers on this album are lackluster, most of them retain the same dark sound as the originals - particularly 'Mosquito Song' (which had strings in it to begin with) and 'The Sky is Falling'. The latter is, in my opinion, the best on the entire album. It's so incredibly lush and vacant at the same time. i'm not incredibly wild about the "atmospheric" guitar stylings on some of these tracks, and unlike other cover albums, some follow the original arrangements too closely. Still, I like albums that are edgy, and I think that some of this works. Buy it, if only to listen and love a couple of tracks and pass it along.

3 out of 5 stars Not that bad.........2004-05-14

Being a fan that "needs it all" I just had to check it out. Its not going to make you stand up and scream AAAAAWW YEAH but its well done and the music lends itself to this interpitation. Check out the studio stuff first, but chances are that if you are looking here its because you want it all. Not terrible..but a good listen.

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

As one of the leaders of an exciting new generation of countertenors, Brian Asawa benefits not only from his distinctive voice, but also from his record label's publicity machine, which has made his name and his first two recordings strongly recognized by critics and listeners. Asawa's success at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1991 and his many opera performances in the United States and abroad certainly haven't hurt his career. The voice we hear is unquestionably pretty and technically refined, but its throaty, dark timbre sounds more like the efforts of a man trying to sound like a woman. He just doesn't have that uniquely male countertenor quality exemplified by three of Asawa's more engaging colleagues--Andreas Scholl, David Daniels, and Daniel Taylor. That's not to say that these performances of some of the 16th century's loveliest songs are not eminently listenable and occasionally sublime. Asawa's agile voice projects a strong character coupled with an effortless delivery that will appeal to many listeners. He has an annoying habit, however, of singing slightly behind the beat and gradually leaning into longer-held notes. --David Vernier

2 out of 5 stars Too Rushed, Low on Feeling.......2006-03-04

I've really tried to like Brian Osawa but when I hear this CD, it sounds to me like he's faking his way through the songs, though I doubt he in fact is. It's passionless.Thankfully I bought this CD used for only $9.99 CDN. Regretably, I will likely be selling it back to the used CD store from which it came. Daniel Taylor and James Bowman's Love Bade me Welcome would be a much better selection, i bought it new and its worth every cent!

1 out of 5 stars Beyond mediocre.......1999-08-26

Sorry, but this self-involved, primping prissy, gen-x "amerrican" version of lute song is a far cry from what I would have hoped to have heard from this supposed "promising" artist. The only promise we can hope for is that he stops inflicting this pap on us. If this is the future of opera, get me outta here.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty voice sings pretty songs, but it's pretty mediocre..........1999-07-04

This album of 16th century songs was VERY highly recommended to me by a store clerk at my local music retailer. I did not preview the album before buying it, but was intrigued by the seeming popular nature of the albums production and promotion. As a 20th centuruy composer and performer, I have dealt extensively with the human voice, in all it's many guises and forms. Asawa's voice has a sweet and fairly clean alto character, but the desired strenth and passion of the counter tenor labeling is obviously lacking. I do not doubt that future albums, perhaps featuring a more complex instrumentation and format will show that Mr. Asawa's voice can be something more than a young alto with an overindulgent rubato complex. The album is not the worst I have heard utilizing "non-traditional" male voices, but the clarity of line and sensitivity needed to convey emotion in these songs is something that perhaps is better left to a more tenured voice. I am ooking forward to seeing what the future brings us from Mr. Asawa, but I do hope he will be braver with the timbres and colors in his voice. It is truly a shame not to let the emotive quality of the counter tenor voice lead the way over "technical" purity.

5 out of 5 stars HEAVEN!!!.......1998-10-01

When you start the CD and sit back you will literally think you have died and gone to heaven! Brian Asawa is heaven on Earth!

If you have not heard anything from Brian, you are in for an extraordinary treat. Brian's voice is an incredible gift that every person should be exposed to. "The Dark is My Delight" is a wonderful display of Brian's range and vocal gifts. A collection of mostly 14th Century lute songs, it is a perfect subject for Brian's unique voice. "Come Again, Sweet Love" is a perfect opening song as it gives you his full range and style. In the beginning you cannot believe that this sweet, melodious voice can be coming from a human, muchless a male. You'll be thinking that throughout this wonderful CD.

There are few CDs that are so extraordinary but then again this is Brian's first CD. EVERYONE should listen and expose themselves to Brian Asawa's talents. He can only be looked upon as a rising countertenor star soon to be at the same level as the "great tenors!" I am not exaggerating. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! There is nothing more I can say!

5 out of 5 stars HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-09-30

Brian Asawa is simply heaven on Earth! Nothing else can describe that wonderous voice of his. You literally feel like you have died and are hearing the angels welcome you to their kingdom. When you listen to the CD you'll understand!

The compilation of songs here are an excellent line-up for Brian. It allows him to, in a sense, tell you stories with excellent lute accompaniment. "Come Again, Sweet Love" was an excellent choice to lead off the CD as it showcases the extraordinary abilities of Brian. His sweet and melodic voice almost transports you back to the late 1500s when this song was written. In fact, you will probably get that feeling with every song on this CD but it is to Brian's abilities that we credit this.

There are very few CDs that I can/do recommend so highly. Brian Asawa is a rising star of countertenors to the same level as the "great tenors." I do not exaggerate when I say this. He has a vocal gift that must be shared with the world and the more people that hear him the better THEY are for it. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! What more can I say!!!

Here's a great way to introduce kids to jazz. These inspired and swinging nursery rhymes, including "The Farmer in the Dell," "Row Your Boat," and "Mary Had a Little Lamb," are sung by kids and an assortment of jazz players who do everything from scatting and playful phrasing to creating a handful of tasty solos for each piece. As a concept it's great, but the execution is even more exciting, as the kids and the "grownups" act out comic sequences in "Little Lamb" and other songs. Meanwhile, the African-inspired guitar lines, seemingly right out of Senegal, in "Freight Train" and "Eentsy, Weensty Spider" prove to be fluidly melodic and highly imaginative. After hearing this innovative ensemble performing these delectable old children's rhymes, you won't be able to get them out of your head. Besides, when was the last time you heard an album dedicated to--and at times obviously inspired by--"the spirit of Frank Zappa"? That notorious Mother would readily approve. --Martin Keller

    Album Description

The Mother Goose Jazz Band reinvents children's songs in the Jazz idiom. From a big band version of "Little Boy Blue Come Blow Your Horn" to a Thelonious Monk-inspired, "This Little Pig Went to Market." Familiar nursery rhymes are given jazz arrangements that young children can easily absorb.

It's just not completly my cup of tea. I enjoy the jazzy twist they give all the songs, but it's not my favorite. The music is good and lyrics are quality, but it just doesn't make me want to stand up and dance (thus not sure if Olivia will want to once she learns to stand). It's a good addition to her music collection, so I don't feel it was a waste of money. If it sounds interesting to you, I'd say try it.

This is the only kids' CD my husband can stomach. He hates Raffi, is annoyed by children's choirs and anything else he hears in the car. We've taken it cross country and back and around and around on commutes for a couple of years now, and it wears well with all of us. The version of Mary Had a Little Lamb is hilarious, and the mellower tracks quiet the back seat right down whenever the girls are stressed and tired.
The reviewers who point out its impure jazzness are right: Freight Train is sung country and the Potato song is a corny novelty piece that my husband does hate. (my daughter loves them, though) And the price is kind of steep for just 10 tracks. But when I consider the play time it's gotten, we're ready to buy the other Mother Goose Jazz Band CD that I just discovered today.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing. You Can do Better.......2002-04-26

We did not like it and do not listen to it. I say that as a parent experienced with lots of children's music, and a semi-jazz enthusiast.

If you want to expose your children to really great jazz, then buy Joe Cool's Blues by Wynton Marsalis or A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi Trio. And if you want great Children's music, buy a Raffi CD.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is for everyone, not just jazz lovers........2001-11-07

My 22 month old loves to listen to this CD in the car. (I must admit I enjoy it as much as he does.) He laughs and laughs during "Mary had a Little Lamb." We both sing "Hey Diddle Diddle" as we drive down the road. The music is by no stretch of the imagination cutting edge jazz - it is simple jazz interpretations of traditional children's songs (and the songs are very singable). I highly recommend the CD!
