Best yet.......2007-05-14
This is the best collection of Glenn Miller! It doesn't sound "tinny" like so many remastered CDs. The only one you need.
I love this stuff!.......2007-03-22
I think I was born in the wrong time! I love this old stuff.
A wonderful musical document.......2007-03-12
This box-set is an wonderful musical document, and an exceptional value for the money. The 40-page booklet of bio, session & discography info makes for pleasant reading while listening. I'm going to enjoy this for a long time. The only minor disappointment was that the compiler was unable to find room for "St. Louis Blues March", a personal favorite & memorable selection from Hollywood's The Glenn Miller Story (1953) -- an excellent film, the DVD of which is also available here on Amazon.
Greatest Collection Ever!.......2007-03-12
If you love Big Band, This set is a must have.! Definitely worth the money!
The Golden Years.......2006-11-10
This CD is just wonderful. If you like Glenn Miller, this is the CD to get.

The introductory album to what is an ongoing series on the music of Ethiopia from the '60s and '70s features a variety of vocal and instrumental tracks from artists mostly unfamiliar to Western audiences. This brief period of liberated creativity before a military shutdown yielded an astonishing burst of creativity, melding the traditions of Ethiopia (geographically and culturally straddling Africa and the Middle East) with R&B and European pop in unexpected ways. Loping rhythms merge with Memphis-style horns, wheezy Farfisa organs, and quavering but passionate vocals that at times shimmer with brilliance. Early tracks by superstar Mahmoud Ahmed merge with rarities like the stunning Teshome Meteku, whose career spanned only four tracks total. Ending with the biggest ever hit, Getatchew Kassa's "Tezeta" (5,000 copies sold), this will leave you wanting more, as will the wonderful and comprehensive liner notes. --Derek Rath
Customer Reviews:
True Ethiopian nostalgia.......2000-02-03
This collection presents songs from what to me are the best years of Ethiopian music (1969-1975). The first three songs are by Muluken Melesse, who enjoys some kind of a legendary status among Ethiopians. These songs justify his reputation. His voice is really extraordinary, and the band plays in what was then a new style in Ethiopian music, which was more rythmic and smooth than the earlier "police orchestra" style. Muluken is followed by Mahmud Ahmad, in songs that are well known and sound as good as any. The two songs by Seyfu Yohannes are very special "Mela Mela" and "Tizita". These are arranged and performed so well that you wonder why he did not become a star. Four songs by Teshome Metuku are in the highest standard - Jazzy arrangements and mellow singings. There is the classic Tizita by Getachew Kassa, which to me is one of the best two versions ever recorded (the other is Muluken's version). Three instrumentals by Mulatu Astatke's band add to this classic CD, especially "Hewete" which should be recognized as one of the most beautiful Ethiopian instrumentals ever recorded. This collection makes you wonder where has all this talent disappeared, and sure makes you ask for more of the same.
Don't miss this one........1998-12-14
Wild, beautiful Ethiopian Deep Soul music - this album is sublime. Definitely in the same league of ethnic R&B as the great Intensified Ska reissues, but with the conspicuous presence of middle eastern and eritrean melodies and innovation. I would recommend this to any sensitive person who loves authentic music of any sort.

Customer Reviews:
The finest set of western swing ever. Timeless fun!.......2006-07-07
Western swing fans will be dancing in the streets over this brilliant box set. It features 99 cuts dating from 1932 through the late 40's. They run chronologically and features all the great architects of western swing: Milton Brown & his musical Brownies, Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys, Light Crust Doughboys etc. Even if you're not a fan of country music, you may enjoy this one. It is genuine feel-good, stomping music with honkytonk pianos, fiddles, drums, guitars and even saxes. This is without a doubt the best buy for any fan of this genre. It is timeless fun! Crank it all the way up, pop open a cold one and all of sudden it's 1938 and you're in a Dallas honky tonk. By the way, the liner notes in the booklet are outstanding with dates, pixs, stories. Most interesting was that the Crystal Springs Ramblers from Ft. Worth were a favorite of Bonnie and Clyde's at a popular dance hall down there. Great job by Proper Records!
Good Luck in trying to find something better !.......2006-06-21
I read some of the other reviews and I can apperciate a lot what other folks are saying. I really agree with the one who said that todays Country Music makes them sick. What in the name of God does a naked Faith Hill rolling around a bed under the sheets singing some half baked so called Modern Country have to do with the music that I was raised on and grown to love. As the Great Bill Monroe stated "That junk ain't part of nothing",(I saw that on a FH video that was being played on cabel TV). What a moral let down, instead of appearing as one of our Country Stars she looks a lot more like a B-girl- that's where we are today. I said all that to say this: If you love WesternSwing like I do then you will love this set - it really has a lot of good stuff and takes you back to the days of Bob, Milton,Tommy,Leon, Spade and many other outstanding Western Swing artists. This set was a real welcome to my Swing Collection.
Keep in mind that this music ain't for everybody. If you like spending time listening to the likes of a feuding Toby with the Dixie Chicks then this real Roots Music ain't for you. But if you would be willing to sell your top coon hound to get the money to get tickets to see "Asleep at the Wheel" then you might be a fan that can apperciate what was started by Bob & Milton way down in Texas back in the early 30's.
While I type this review I'm listening to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys perform "Faded Love" on my computer so I'll cut it short. Buy this set - at this price you can't afford not too. While you are at it do what I did and get the "Proper Records - Bob Wills/Take Me Back To Tulsa" also - you will be Blessed !
"ENJOY" Joe Kopeck / Parkville,MD.
A Great Overview Of Western Swing.......2005-06-16
This 4 volume box set by Proper is a fantastic overview of that great American musical art form Western Swing.
It's not country, it's not cowboy, it's not swing, it's just great toe-tapping fun music!
The songs in this album are presented in chronological order thus allowing the listener to experience the growth and progression of this great music.
The songs are remastered originals and the sound quality is first rate.
There's also a booklet containing liner notes about all the artists and a discography.
I own several box sets by Proper and every single one is a bargain, well worth far more than the asking price.
Musical history that is alive and well today.......2004-09-13
My first exposure to Western swing was the first Asleep At The Wheel Bob Wills tribute CD, and I have been hooked ever since. However, up until I bought this collection, I have only heard Bob Wills. I was pleased to buy this in a local branch of Half Price Books. In addition to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, it also has selections from Milton Brown, Patsy Montana, the Light Crust Doughboys, Spade Cooley - just to name a few. This vibrant blend of cowboy/fiddle music and black blues/swing has yet to wander far from my CD player!
Western Swing is Western Folk Jazz no Hillbillies here!.......2003-12-12
This is a great panorama of Western Swing from its origins with Bob Wills and Milton Brown working together inthe Original Light Crust Dough Boys in the early 1930s to Tex Williams' great electric swing band from just after WWII. I've had these sides since Columbia issue an earlier version on LP more than 20 years ago.
This music has little to do with what was considered Country music at the time or its emasculated mutant descendants in Nashville.
This was not marketed as Country music. In fact in 1945 when Bob Wills, the acme of Western SWing, was the biggest grossing public attraction in the entertainment business, he had his sole invitation to the Grand Ole Opry, and then he almost walked out of there before he played a song because the hayseeds wouldn't let him bring on his drums and horns (not allowed onthe Opry until the late 1950s!).
Western Swing comes from Jazz from the pop Jazz of the 20s and early 1930s, included people who went back and forth between bands like Wills and Spade Cooley to the white big bands (though Bob Wills once tried to hire a black alto player[against the law in Oklahoma] and of late Les Paul has taken to claiming he saw Charlie Christian sit in with the Playboys at Cains and there are pictures of the Playboys having drinks in Chicago with black Jazz greats like Ben Webster!!). Townsend Wills' biographer interviewed many Playboys and none of them felt they were part of Country, but part of Jazz.
Basically it begins with people trying to play Jazz and Blues influenced music with the instruments of the old Southwestern Barn dance bands: guitar, fiddle, piano, adding in drums, and in many bands all the instruments of the Jazz orchestras. Very quickly Bobby Dunne added in the electric Hawaii, pedaless steel guitar and Leon McAuliffe who replaced him in the Doughboys and went with Wills was so well known that Bob Wills' introduction to him "Take it Away Leon" became a catch phrase in the whole country and beyond in the 1940s!
At its most hyperbolic height (captured here in the Space Cooley Orchestra's Oklahoma Stomp, a recording anyone with a set of ears should treasure) you had 16 and 18 piece orchestras with full fiddle sections (in the early 1960s Wills even rounded his fiddles with a violist from the Lawrence Welch band!), complete reed sections, and more brass than they needed, and exotic additions like the Harpist who kicks off The Oklahoma Stomp.
Further on than these recordings go, you would have players like Tiny Moore and Johnny Gimble who incorporated Bebop styles in their solos.
Along the way, mostly during that war time period when recording bans and players going in and out of the army and different bands make following a little harder, the straight western swing style of combining a guitar, steel guitar, and sometimes electric mandolin trio alternating with fiddle choirs took hold as the paradigm for Western Swing. For some reason in most bands the horns seemed to disappear or roll down to just one after WWII.
One thing about this music is that a very high level of musical technique and education became more and more part of the Western Swing environment. We know that European Jazmen like Stephan Grappelli followed the recordings of Hugh Farr who played with the sons of the pioneers and later Spade Cooley, and that Down Beat magazine described Eldon Shamblin out of Bob Wills' band as the best rythm guitar player in the country (slighting Freedie Green who even Eldon probably acknowledge was better).
The other thing in contrast with much of what was being presented as country music contemporaneously is that this was not being presented as "old time music," craddling close to old conventions, but a new hot dangerous music, drawn as close as comfort would allow from Black sources, from the dangerous white swing bands, and from the part of down home music involved in drinking, dancing, cheating, and other things not permitted in the Baptist Southeast.
WSM Grand Old Opry Stars toured the deep South playing in school auditoriums, church houses, and public squares. From the beginning Western swing belonged in barrooms, in dance halls, and other places where "the wine and liquor flow." Even Hank Williams wasn't allowed to use the word "beer" when he sang "My Bucket's got a hole in it" on the Opry. Meanwhile Western Swingers like Wills and Brown were singing about Cocaine and Opium, whiskey and beer back in the early 1930s.
And Smokie Woods wasn't called smokie cause he liked Tobacco. LOL. In fact his tune here called "Everybody's Trukin," about what is done "up in Harlem" includes much use of a word that does sound like truckin', but does not contain an r or a T but does start with an F!!
No this is not Nashville Country or even old time country music. This is Western guys and gals trying to be jazzy, bluesy, wild, whiskey soaked, drug high, hip to the secrets of Negroid nights of "truckin," playing their hearts out fast hot and heavy!
Anyone with ears should own this collection!
ps another wierd side note to this is on the great Hit\
"Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette)" both Tex Williams who sang it and Merle Travis who wrote it died of lung cancer!

Creaking horns, wheezing Farfiza organs, and soulful, Middle Eastern-tinged vocals are the hallmarks of these rare recordings from the Golden Age of Ethiopian popular music (1969-1975), made during Haile Sellasie's reign before the military shut down of Addis Abbaba's nightlife. Soul, jazz, and UK '60s pop had infiltrated the hipster milieu, adding new color to the swirling, elliptical local grooves, laid down by moonlighting members of police and military bands (they had the instruments), often with stunning effect. The unfamiliar Arabic vocal flavor actually shares common roots with R&B, and any hint of ersatz kitsch is dispelled by their passion and integrity. Recorded with just one or two mikes, these selections are reminiscent of early Jamaican bluebeat in quality, heightening the effect of glimpsing a magical time, long passed, through a dusty keyhole, and the other individual releases in the series are equally as fascinating. --Derek Rath

Wow, what a gem. A marvelous fusion of traditional Etheopian music and funk which works on every level.
Amazing Ethiopia.......2005-07-28
This CD exemplifies the artistic ingenuity of the Ethiopian people. Though the music is quite obviously very Westernized, employing electric guitars, drum kits, saxophones, and even muted trumpet solos, the music retains native Ethiopian elements, such as a propensity toward triple meter rhythms, strict adherence to a variety of pentatonic scales, and the use of the Amharic language. This music truly was the golden age of modern Ethiopian music. Many of these recordings were the last of their kind to be released before the oppressive and all too long-lasting Marxist regime of Mengistu Hailemariam came to power.
This CD showcases some of the superstars of Ethiopian pop music - Muluqèn Mèllèssè, Alèmayèhu Eshèté, Tlahoun Gèssèssè, and Mahmoud Ahmed, just to name a few. The music ranges from the fun - 'Yèqondjowotch Mendèr', sung by Hirut Bèqèlè, with the groovy and bouncy Police Orchestra jamming on saxophones, trumpets, drums, and electric guitar. Hirut sings a happy melody about the 'village of the beauties,' where none are as handsome as her lover - to dramatic - 'Tènèsh kèlbé lay', where Muluqèn Mèlèsse begs for his heart to be left alone by the torments of love - to energetic - 'Kèlkeyelegn', sung by Tèfèri Fèllèqè, backed by the Army Band. The song starts with a funky 60's organ and brass over an undulating bassline, with bright electric guitars imparting an almost Kenyan sound - to sexy - 'Sèlam Almazeyé', Mahmoud Ahmed's famous song about his passionate love for the beautiful Almaz.
I've only been listening to Ethiopian (and Eritrean) music for about a year so fare, but this is yet another jewel from the wonderful Ethiopiques series. I highly recommend it to anyone remotely interested in the music of this overlooked and misunderstood land.
Musique Ethiopiques, vol. 3.......2002-03-25
Each track on this CD is a gem. Just when you think it can't possibly get any better, the next track is. It is hard music to describe... If you enjoy Om Kulsum you will be in a good position to start with this, although this is probably more broadly accessible than Om Kulsum. Some of it sounds almost like some older Indian and Japanese pop music. These people certainly listened to James Brown and you can hear Motown and central African influences, but an artist like Muluqen Mellesse takes these influences and makes something new and beautiful. Read the lyrics translated in the informative insert that comes with this CD. Everything about this collection is wonderful.
Best disk of the series!.......2000-10-30
The first song has a trance-inducing beat, snake charmer saxophone stylings, and passionate vocals. The rest of the disk rocks out like some sort of "middle eastern" James Brown. Nice hammond organ work on a few tracks. Brilliant vocalists. Beautiful clarinet on the last song.

BARKING DOGS, WALTZING CATS, AND A RIDE WITH ROCCO!.......2006-12-05
Every year about this time, I like to add some new Christmas related item to my collection of Ammyland Reviews, Lists, or Guides. This year it was between reviewing The Jingle Dogs album, where they bark holiday favorites, or THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON, where the composer conducts his own miniature orchestral compositions, including the classic version of his original instrumental, SLEIGH RIDE. If you're reading this, then you already know that the annoying canines got the boot. And they ran all the way to the Spring of 2007 with their tails between their legs. "And don't come back! Shut them dawgs up, April!"
OK, where were we? Oh, yeah: It was in December of 1996 when I kept hearing this particular instrumental version of Sleigh Ride played on the radio station I listened to every day while delivering fresh squeezed organic juice to a grocery store or health food store near you. This was the most imaginative, briskly paced, and snowy version of Sleigh Ride I'd ever heard: the horses were clip-clopping, the whip was cracking, and I was bundled up warmly with a lovely lady friend at my side in this imaginary Santa suit-red sleigh polished to a high sheen after twelve coats of wax and a Laurie Partridge in a pear tree. (Yeah, I know I get a little carried away, but what are ya gonna do?)
Soon I was obsessed with that musical piece. "Who does THAT version, Mr. DJ Man? Who does it?" Finally, on the thirteenth day of Christmas, my DJ said to me, "That was Sleigh Ride - Leroy Anderson." I was about to yell at the radio, "I know it was Sleigh Ride, and my name's not Leroy Anderson!" when all of a sudden, the light bulb lit up above my head... in the same moment that the light bar on the police car behind me lit up. (When the cop finally managed to catch up to me, he found me at the counter of my local music store, paying for a copy of THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON.)
To this day, my four favorite instrumentals of all-time are MOONLIGHT SERENADE; THE TRUTH WILL ALWAYS BE; BUMPIN' ON SUNSET; and SLEIGH RIDE. But not just any version of Sleigh Ride. No! It must be THIS recording, the one found on THIS disc, conducted by Anderson himself. I believe that Anderson may have recorded Sleigh Ride more than once, but THIS 1950 version is the one you want. Hey, would I lie to you about something so important this late in the season, and risk finding only lumps of coal in my stocking again?
Of course, there's other "stuffs" here that you might like also. As the informative liner notes say, "Many of these pieces have become part of the musical fabric of American life. Most everyone knows one or more of his tunes, though they may not know the name of the composer [*It's Leroy Anderson, remember?*] or even the title of the composition." For instance, there's BLUE TANGO, the first instrumental piece ever to sell over one million copies. And THE SYNCOPATED CLOCK, used as the theme for "The Late Show" on WCBS-TV in New York for over 25 years.
Anderson was incredibly imaginative and he composed each piece almost completely in his head. He stated, "When I'm making something up I never play a melody on the piano, because your fingers are used to falling into familiar patterns. You don't give your imagination free rein that way. In other words, your fingers are holding you back." I find his brief musical pieces to be very evocative. For instance, when I hear SUMMER SKIES, in my mind I seem to see images of Lee Remick romping in a bathing suit at the beach as if in a black and white montage from some classic movie of the 1950s. Or when I hear THE WALTZING CAT, I always seem to imagine a cat waltzing in my mind. THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING always makes me think of the first day of Spring ("Shut them dawgs up, April!"), and FORGOTTEN DREAMS always reminds me of... hmmm... I forget. But anyway, SLEIGH RIDE takes me for a ride in a sleigh in my wintry mind. And just how imaginative WAS Leroy Anderson? Get this! He composed Sleigh Ride during a 1948 July heat wave in Woodbury, Connecticut! OK? Uh-huh. That's what I'M talkin' `bout! So, what else ya wanna know?
For me, Christmas season begins the day after Thanksgiving every year, when I pull out my copy of THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON and blast the one piece of music that says "Christmas" to me like no other Christmas song does - this 1950 recording of Sleigh Ride. And I usually play the song at least once a day up through and including the 25th of December. Then I put the compact disc away for another year (after all, who really wants to hear about a waltzing cat? I mean really?!) Get into the swing of the Holiday spirit with THE BEST OF LEROY ANDERSON. Otherwise, I may just have to send Rocco over there to take you for a little (sleigh) ride... if you catch my (snow)drift.
Sleigh Ride: The Best of Leroy Anderson.......2006-03-09
Excellent CD. Got here very quickly.
Leroy Anderson rings a bell .. and wood blocks .. and .......2006-02-01
I have been a fan of Leroy Anderson ever since I played his music in middle school band in the 1950's. His classics were very inventive: imitating a typewriter (remember those?), a cat on a piano, a sleigh ride with bells and whips cracking, bugle calls, and so much more, most of it composed for highlighting specific instruments: trumpet, wood block, sandpaper block, pizzicato violin. Anderson is truly an accomplished, American composer. In this CD he conducts his own compositions. And the CD insert also taught me more about Anderson, the man, and his involvement with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Buy it, read it, and listen to it.
Wonderful Lite Classical Composer.......2005-09-23
Leroy Anderson was one of the best Lite Classical American Composers of the mid 20th Century and this CD won't dissappoint you. Taken from original recordings that Anderson conducted you'll hear the orchestrations as he wanted them to be heard. There's a mix of familiar and unfamiliar pieces that are all satisfying to listen to.

Customer Reviews:
"Golden" Indeed!.......2006-05-08
Dick Haymes had one of the most mellow voices of the early bona fide crooners, and this collection is "golden" indeed! It is virtually a "complete" collection of his very best work. He was among the best crooners of an era that brought forth many, such as the early Sinatra and the great Buddy Clark. If you enjoy great baritones, rank Dick with the two named above, and such true crooners as Jack Jones, Matt Monro, Steve Lawrence, Perry Como, Don Cherry, and John Gary. For those of you who are too young to recall these super male singers, you have no idea what you are missing - like, real music.
Great Price, Great pressings.......2004-01-06
This Jasmine Music collection of Dick Haymes on 4 cds with over 100 tracks is a great price!
For collectors of Haymes some of the tracks are duplicated on other recordings but this is definitely worth the price.
Duets with Helen Forrest, Bing Crosby, the Andrew Sisters (I guess that counts as a quartet !) are all represented.
The pressings are clean and the sound is wonderful.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Every song from the first half of her career.......2006-10-19
Please note that this is a re-issue of a long-out-of print double CD (Crazy dreams - the Four Star years) with exactly the same track listing but different packaging.
Patsy's recording career lasted from 1956 to 1963 and was divided between two record labels - Four Star and Decca, the switch occurring in 1960. Most of her success came with Decca but this collection focuses on the Four Star recordings, for which this is the best ever released, containing every song she ever recorded for the label, superbly re-mastered. There are extensive liner notes including session details for these recordings, even including an outline of her career with Decca. The style of Patsy's music on Four Star was solidly traditional country with none of the strings that were used on her Decca recordings.
Patsy's only hit during her time with Four Star was Walking after midnight, a song that Patsy later re-recorded for Decca. Part of the reason for Patsy's limited success (and the main reason that she eventually left Four Star) was that she was only allowed to record songs for which the record label held the publishing copyright. Despite this limitation, there are many excellent songs here.
Apart from Walking after midnight, the most famous original song here is the classic ballad, Just out of reach, a song that has often been covered by country, pop and soul singers. Now, why wasn't Patsy's recording a hit? Among the other great songs here are Pick me up on your way down, A poor man's roses (later covered by Reba McEntire, a huge fan of Patsy's music), In care of the blues and Come on in.
Towards the end of Patsy's contract with Four Star, the label relented and she was able to record some other songs including covers of Lovesick blues, Life's railway to heaven and Just a closer walk with thee. It was too late. Patsy moved to Decca and suddenly became a major star by recording some of the best original songs available.
If you are new to Patsy's music, I recommend that you should first look for a collection of her Decca music including such classics as I fall to pieces, Crazy and She's got you. If you want to explore further, you will enjoy this.

Customer Reviews:
A Trip Back in Time.......2007-06-08
Great reproduction of these old and beloved tunes. A real bargain with three cds, sixty songs at the price of one. His famous tune "If I Only Had A Match" is worth the price. This truly is "A Trip Back in Time".
Jolson fan.......2007-06-05
Al Jolson was a phenomenal success as an entertainer during the vaudville years and in early films (app 1915-1935). He had a voice and style that was youthful and energetic. This was the hallmark of the great Al Jolson. You get very little of that Jolson in this boxed set. Most of the songs (47 in this set of 60) were from recordings made in the late '40's after his film biographies. The voice is an octave lower than the original Jolson voice and the style is a bit tired. Add a third star if you like the songs. But if you want to hear the style and voice that made Jolson great you'll find very little of it in this set.

"Golden Years of Al Jolson" presents the listener with a good overview of the work of the great Al Jolson.
The sound quality of these CDs is first-rate.
Many of these tracks don't appear to be the original hits but they are very well done and a real pleasure to listen to.
Jolie even teams up with Bing Crosby for a couple of tunes!
music lover.......2007-01-06
The product was in excellent condition. Al Jolsen's singing is so clear and beautiful. It is like he is singing for you in the same room. It's fun to listen to the old songs. It's songs are in a whole different century. I think some of the songs have funny words in them. They make you laugh and feel good. If you want to hear real talent, buy this. You will never hear a voice like this before. "A MAN WHO LOVED TO SING"!
A Must Have Item for any Al Jolson Fan.......2006-06-19
I was so pleased to receive this item as a gift for Fathers Day. This 3CD Deluxe Edition contains many of the songs I have listened to from The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again, but are in there original presentations free from the Movie makers arrangements to compliment the story line. It was so refreshing to hear such a crisp and clear delivery from the Legendary Al Jolson accompanied with outstanding instrumentals. Many of Al's early works are included in this set, but with outstanding clarity. I have heard some of his early deliveries and the sound quality wasn't very good when reproduced on a CD. I was very impressed with all of the sound reproductions included in this outstanding 3CD set. If you are an Al Jolson Fan, you will certainly do yourself a huge disservice if you do not purchase this item. It is the best set of Al Jolson recordings that I have ever heard.

not worth it.......2007-01-19
Too many songs that I did not care for. I'm sure there is another "best of" CD that is cheaper and less expensive.
MODERN TALKING----LEAD THE EURO-POP IN THE 1980S.......2004-11-01
Modern Talking found a niche
when they created a synth pop
dance sound inspired by
Donna Summer's early disco album
From then on, other groups followed
the lead. Blue System, Bad Boys Blue,
Fancy, Joy, and C.C. Catch developed
their styles in this genre we called
Euro New Wave

Simply the best. You get all of Modern Talking's best songs from 85-87 on this 3cd disc collection. It's a must for true Modern Talking fans. Great price!!!
Absolutely Fabulous.......2003-01-23
Modern Talking made their official debut in 1985 when they released "The First Album" which was packed with excellent hits such as "You're my hear, you're my soul", "You can win if you want", "Do you wanna", "One in a million" and "There's too much blue in missing you"... their success did not stop then, on the other hand, it grew bigger and bigger when they released hits like "Brother Louie" and "Cheri Cheri Lady". Anyway, more and more compilations of their best hits were released during the years, but this one is special. It is a 3 CD boxset containing all of their hits during 1985-1987 era, 12 songs on each CD plus two additional extended versions of "Brother Louie" and "Cheri Cheri Lady".
Please note that this CD compilation does not include any of the late 90s remixes from "Back For Good" CD or their latest hits after their reunion.
A Must for any Modern Talking or 80s fan.

Customer Reviews:
an outstanding introduction to rebetika artists.......2003-06-01
This is an excellent compilation of famous older artists of rembetica. The info pamphlet with the cd is the best I've ever seen. It makes a wonderful introduction to this music style. This recording has led me to get some albums of some of these artists: Dalgas and Papagika in particular.
Music of my heritage........2000-03-16
Do your roots reach back to Asia Minor? Did you hear the stories from your grandparents about their flight from the old country? Yes? Then you're primed for this outstanding CD! The loving passion of these artists will allow you to experience the emotions your grandparents felt when they listened, and sang, to these folk classics. And I mean passion!
A fantastic recording of Greek Music of Asia Minor.......1998-09-09
Put simply, this is a fantastic recording. It is a fine recording of urban music of the Greek communities of Anatolia (present day Turkey) which were wiped out earlier in this century. It spans the years 1927-1932 and features the pre-eminent instrumentalists and vocalists of the era. It features artists whose music continues to influence Greek and Turkish music to this day. Not surprisingly, many of the numbers are laments for a lost love, a lost way of life or a lost homeland; however, many of the numbers are upbeat and relect the vibrancy of this lost community. A few of the songs feature Antonios Diamandithes, nicknamed "Dalgas" (Turkish, for wave) for the extraordinary ululations of his voice. He has rightly been called one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century, and the proof is on this record. His "Ponos Tis Xenitia" is a song of the searing pain of exile. It is among the most moving, evocative songs ever recorded. I grew up listening to this type of music and this record is like a gift from heaven. Contrary to another review listed here which states that the instruments are all "Turkish" and that the music loses all it's Greek elements, nothing could be farther from the truth. These instruments can more accurately be called Anatolian or even Middle Eastern, no country or people can claim their origins, moreover, most of the virtuosoes of these instruments were Christian Greeks or Armenians. Also this "Smyrnaic" music (from the Greek city Smyrna on the coast of present day Turkey) forms the foundation of much of modern Greek music. The analogy has frequently been made that this music is to Greek and Turkish contemporary music what the blues is to American music. The allusion is very accurate in more ways than one. I would highly recommend this recording to anyone who has an interest in Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Klezmer or world music in general. It is a paradigm of the genre, and no aficiando's library is complete without it.
