Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks.It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Album Description

"Kerouac's Last Dream" is regarded as a definitive Ramblin' Jack Elliott CD, even by Ramblin' Jack, who says, "I think this album is better than any of my previous albums." It has also been also cited as his best-sounding recording prior to his 1995 Grammy-winning "Sun Coast." On this reissue of a rare 1980 German LP, with eight previously unreleased tracks added, Ramblin' Jack performs classic songs by his primary inspiration and early-'50s traveling companion, the late Woody Guthrie ("Pretty Boy Floyd," "Talkin' Fishin'," "1913 Massacre"), by a younger Guthrie acolyte, Bob Dylan ("Don't Think Twice," "I Threw It All Away"), by seminal country music artists Ernest Tubb ("Soldier's Last Letter") and Roy Acuff ("Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"), and some traditional folk standards ("Freight Train," "Roving Gambler," "Cuckoo," "Buffalo Skinners," and "Nightherding Song"). For good measure, there are even a couple of Elliott originals ("Cup of Coffee" and "912 Greens! "), always a rare commodity.

Performing solo on acoustic guitar and vocals, Elliott has assembled a showcase of timeless songs and unaffected delivery. As "the last of the Brooklyn cowboys," as Arlo Guthrie has called him, Elliott could be singing these songs at a lonely campfire after a hard day on the trail. Listeners are lucky to be within earshot.

After reading the Amazon description above, with Ramblin' Jacks testimony about this recording, I bought it -- and found it a letdown. I first heard this consummate singer / guitarist forty years ago, beginning with Hard Travelin', which is a masterpiece. At his best, Elliott is a master of the dramatic subtleties of singing-guitar picking performance, and his skills on both sides of his musical coin are way up there. Even on this CD, which I wasn't so crazy about, his guitar sounds unbelievable, and his voice hasn't lost its appeal. So what am I complaining about? Jack got too creative with his material during this period, substituting a Richie Havens type of guitar style for the amazing fingerpicking of his early years, and his phrasing as a singer is often emotionally unconvincing and just over the top. Compare the Woody Guthrie songs on this CD with those on Hard Travelin', or the newer version of "912 Greens" (a BIG letdown) with the gem of a performance on Young Brigham. The reference to Jack Kerouac also seemed gratuitous, although Elliot was part of that "beatnik" scene in the late fifties and early sixties. But there are still some good songs here; "Don't Think Twice" by his old friend Bob Dylan is one of the highlights, and "Buffalo Skinners" is really hair-raising!

There certainly is a theme included in this collection by Jack. He played a live show here in Sacramento and I missed it, but this Music set lets you feel his soul as well and I'm happy with it. It is listenable through several "encores" before I put it aside.

Which means it is a pretty typical Jack Elliot recording. This one, made in 1980 in Germany but not released in the USA until 1997, lasts 70 minutes, so by my lights, about 46 of those minutes are worth repeated play. What I did not like much is the ten-minute talk/story piece that concludes it, "912 Greens", and his versions of "Night Herding Song" and "Buffalo Skinners" (which I never liked by any artist.) In the "so-so" group are the songs "Cuckoo" and "Soldier's Last Letter" (written by Ernest Tubb, the mid-20th century country star.)

But the good outweighs the not-so-good on this CD: Jack's versions of "Pretty Boy Floyd" and "Freight Train Blues" and "Roving Gambler" and "Don't Think Twice, I'm Alright" and "1913 Massacre" are all near-wonderful, and his rendition of "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is perhaps second only to Willie Nelson's, in my experience...and that's a country classic covered by just about everybody since the '50's.

Elliott's 1980's voice is more robust than on his mid-1990's releases on the HighTone label, if a bit more weathered than what you hear on his late '50's and early 60's products. His guitar-picking on this album is a welcome highlight.

Folk fans who don't already know Jack Elliott's work, and his role in the end of Woody Guthrie's career and the start of Bob Dylan's, likely are not reading this review...but if you are new to Jack, this recording is not a bad one to own. If you are already a fan, but haven't heard this disc, you will certainly want it. Jack's voice has never been as good as his friend Cisco Houston's, who remains to me the premier interpreter of Woody's songs (with Arlo coming in third to Jack himself) but lots of people prefer his singing and pickin' to Woody's.

This album is a unique Ramblin Jack album from many vantage points, one being the era (1980) in which Jack recorded it over in Germany... Jack was in the midst of a 25 year hiatus from studio's, in that (between 1970 and 1995's South Coast), Jack toured relentlessly, worked on sailboats, rambled, toured, toured and toured but did not record an album)... this was recorded in Germany and released in America 17 years later... it captures the Jack in between the young Jack that lived/travelled with Woody Guthrie, was friends with Kerouak, tutored a young Dylan, played all over Europe alone and with Derroll Adams on banjo, introduced Kris to Janis, toured w/ the Rolling Thunder review ---- with the Jack we know today that has re-emmerged with several great albums over the late 90's and tours around the west coast today hanging with the likes of former Beachboys and Deadheads and Cowboys and poets.... think Jack in a dungeon with his guitar and just singin' a lot of the songs we all know him to sing.... plus a great version of Jacks own '912 Greens' ("...here come this.. blue car.. i think it was a plymouth--") and Cup've Coffee, and an excellent version of Cuckoo and a touching Soldiers Last Letter and, really, just outstanding versions of all these tunes.... i could write a review on all Ramblin Jack's albums, but i'll choose this one for several reasons as noted mostly above.. it's a great album, i've been looking for the original, vinyl version in Europe for some years now, and i'll find it some day....

I have never been quite so astounded as when this record began. As someone who has heard several old-time versions of 'Pretty Boy Floyd', I couldn't quite comprehend how Elliott had re-styled and stripped down the song until it was totally him and his. Of course, in hindsight, I should have known what to expect from Elliott.
I was given no time to recover from this masterpiece as the opening chords of Roy Acuff's 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' sounded. Hold up. Two slices of perfection? I wasn't ten minutes into the album and it was already the best I'd ever heard. By anybody.
As the album progressed, I began to realise that every one of the 17 tracks was a gem, superbly crafted, faultlessly delivered, and impossibly polished.
The highlights are extensive. An incredible turn on 'Roving Gambler' is followed by the excellent 'Cuckoo', made to Elliott's specfications by including several maverick stanzas to keep you guessing. In 'Don't Think Twice' and 'I Threw It All Away', Elliott tips his hat to his former student, Bob Dylan, and slyly outdoes him to boot.
Best-ever versions of '1913 Massacre' and 'The Buffalo Skinners' will set the heart and mind racing, and there is a trademark comical turn in 'Mean Mamma Blues'.
But just as you think Elliott may be easing off to wind down the collection with a soulful 'Riding Down Canyon', he brings out two self-penned classics.
'Cup Of Coffee' is a wonderfully vivid and mischievous illustration of Elliott undertaking one of his many pastimes, driving trucks. To many RJE fans, this song is at best a one-trick pony and at worst a self-indulgent gabble. I say its some of the most entertaining talking blues you'll hear.
But, try as it might, nothing on this record can prepare you for its ten-minute finale. Elliott brings out the song Jackson Browne described as "a time travelling, spoken-word masterpiece", in '912 Greens'. Elliott teases the distinctive, haunting backing for the song with such care and power that by the time he eventually, almost alarmingly speaks you are ready to break down and cry.
I have never been one for lengthy albums or indeed lengthy songs, but this record is the best I've heard in any genre, and its length and content is nothing short of perfect.

The recordings are simply outstanding. Rex' voice is the best. His style and honesty come through, big time. I just wish he had continued to record, but I understand the reasons why he, most likely, did not. Western/cowboy music has a very loyal, but comparatively small, fan populace. I'm happy to say I'm one of them. I also wish Rex was still with us.

Don Edwards is by far the best cowboy singer in the business. His quiet and unassuming manner, his down home personality when talking with you are what he's about. And it comes through in his music. He's great!

This is a great album, but I'm not sure he shoulda added the "Saddle Songs, Vol. II" to the title, as this collection is much more subdued than his previous double cd "Saddle Songs". If you're expecting a repeat of that collection with different songs, you may be disappointed. Disc 2 gets a liilte more upbeat in spots, but is still quite a bit more mellow than Vol. 1. Having said that, this is well worth the purchase, whichever you like better. I don't know of any other artist who has compiled a collection of cowboy songs as great, and sang them as well, as Mr. Edwards. He has a great voice and is a great picker. Unlike the other reviewer, I would play this at a cookout, but I'd wait till everyone'd had a few and it was time to calm down... My only complaint is that neither this collection, nor the first one, contain the song "Coyotes", which is available on "The Best Of..." as well as "The Bard & The Balladeer" a live cd w/ Waddie Mitchell. It shoulda found a place on one of these...

This is an ok set of discs. A little on the tame side which isn't neccesarily a bad thing. I grew up cattle ranching and at night alot we'd drag out the guitar or just a harmonica or just no instruments and everyone would sing along to quite a few of the songs you'll hear on these cd's.
Don is a strong singer and guitar picker, does a good job. I guess I could say this would be a good reference collection.
If you've had a long hard day and just want to relax on the porch with a cold one and mellow out, this would be good for that. I wouldn't probably play it at a barbeque or a party as it's not a "lets liven this group up" sort of thing. But still good if you just want some Saddle songs like the tittle says.

Compendium of mostly old and not particularly well known western songs. Don Edwards has a very good voice which is the high point of these recordings; otherwise the CD does not reach out and grab you. For the western purist, the old cattle songs are reminiscent of a day gone by.

John Schneider recorded this album towards the end of his country music career (he was about 27 at the time of this recording). His career as an action and musician had him pegged in the "southern gentleman" style of life. He had a lot of people fooled -- he was from New York :)

This album departs greatly from traditional country music ballads and shows John rocking it out a little. Many of his critics did not like this change, but I am not one of those critics. After several "true country" sounding albums, this is a welcomed change. John even tries his hand at songwriting on this album and plays electric guitar as well.

My stand-outs on this album ... LOVE, YOU AIN'T SEEN THE LAST OF ME (written by the co-author of Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England"), ANYONE BUT YOU (prepare for some blues and soul sound), WHEN THE RIGHT ONE COMES ALONG (saxophone solos), and A REDNECK IS THE BACKBONE OF AMERICA (just say "wow!").

Out of print, but worth paying the price for.

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy (or simply "Ledge") is one of the most amazing singers ever recorded professionally. I have been a fan ever since hearing him belt out his classic "Paralyzed" years ago. This is a two CD set featuring 25 new songs by the Ledge. They are all manic or at the very least strange. Most are amusingly listenable although I did not find the power ballad (of sorts) "Linda" very palatable for some reason.

I found the extremely jarring and disjointed "Geiger Counter" and "Egyptian Maiden" to be among the most entertaining tracks, while I found the spoken word (song-poem?) "Someone Took The Yellow From My Egg" to be perhaps the strangest thing I have ever heard on a commercially released CD (that is not to say it's good, it is one of the less inspired songs on the set, actually, but it is very peculiar.) My favorite song on the CD has to be "World's Worst Titles" a song of song titles too bad or strange for even the Ledge to use (for example, "My Baby is Shaped Like an Ironing Board"). For pure surrealism set to music, look no further.

The package is quite nice and includes a lengthy pamphlet (some of which is in French!) describing the life of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and true fans will not want to miss it. These recordings will never have wide commercial appeal, but like all good outsider music, that inherently is their appeal. I recommend this CD set to anyone who wants to broaden their musical horizons beyond the mundane.

Eearly recordings as expected, but adds to ones collection, however, if you are a yodelling fan you may be surprised as I was, " YODELLING Red River Dave" does NOT yodel much......This is the third recording (LP/disc) that I have purchased of R/River Dave. In his era he was a nice singer with some good songs, BUT he should not be adverised as a Yodeller......he only yodels on a limited (small) number of songs...Sorry !
