Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Since 1990, Nod have been self-releasing music which runs the gamut from unconvetional and experimental to conventional yet wonderfully astray. After a significant career of releases, the Rochester NY-based band, led by Joe "the Bard of Breck Street" Sorriero, have delivered their latest batch of goodies to Smells Like Records. It's an undefinable melding of tunes that continues to draw on disparate but recognizable influences (classic rock, free jazz, funk, blues, etc.) with some considerable detuned freestyle tweaking. Industry people have attempted but failed to pin down the Nod muse; at times drowsy, at times crushing, at times just spaced out. Shaggs-like incompetence accusations from some quarters quite frankly baffle us; precious few of today active music bands are as (un)holy intimate with their sound as Nod. Folks' reactions have been positively polarized; they either wanna strangle or suckle at these chaps, but we're AOK with both impulses b/c as Sir Dave Hickey has said: "the art we hate is more important than the art we like but don't really feel the need to get that excited about..." Certainly these boys have done some bongwater-bathing but when shit's said and done they take acute action towards the task at hand - a creepy as all get out caucasoid funk which swings like Lynfield Pioneers fronted by Drungo LaRue Hazewood.
