Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Customer Reviews:
Should be required listening.......2006-11-13
Peter Mayer, brother Jim, Roger Guth, and the rest of this band are some of the most brilliant musicians to come together and form a band. This album is fantastic from start to finish. Peter's voice and guitar work, the wonderful lyrics, and the stylistic melodies are a pleasure to listen to again and again. Very relaxing yet inspiring music. This is a must have for every music lover!!!
Not only a great: singer/songwrite/musician/composer/etc.etc.......2006-10-13
Peter has his own recording studio and does all the sound mixing for Jimmy Buffett. He has years of experience and talent; even enough to make Jimmy sound good. When someone that knows the how and why behind taking something that sounds good and making it sound great becomes the artist, they start with great and make it superb. Music Box is just that, superb!
Breath of FRESH air!.......2005-10-17
I bought Peter's "Music Box" & "Stirrin' Up The Water" CDs last year and haven't listen to anything as much as these two since. If I could write and produce songs like this I'd be a happy man, well lets just say way happier. The dynamics, musicianship, detail and production chops on these two albums are stunning. Forget that he is Jimmy Buffett's guitarist... you'd never know it. Any recording musicians out there that need inspiration... this is it. Total ear candy. Truly an original breath of fresh air.
The best album I've heard in many a year..........2004-10-15
...and that's not just rhetoric. This album is wonderful. The lyrics are deep and insightful, the production is very pleasant and not overbearing, and it has the hallmark of all Peter Mayer work - incredible musicianship and wonderful arrangements. That and a boatload of hooks.
When I say Peter Mayer, people say "who"? Then I tell them that his day job is the lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett's band, and he plays to his real muse in his own group. I tell them that his sound is like a cross between Dave Matthews and Paul Simon (and on this album there's some more poppy stuff that I swear could be on a Sugar Ray album if it was only a little poppier). The music runs the gamut from folk to jazz and dixieland to pop to world beat and gospel. And it all works. This album is that good. (And the song Faith in Angels was just broadcast on the MTV show "Made"). The title track is stirring, both lyrically and in the song structure.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Peter Mayer and his brother Jim (the bassist) and they are amazingly humble for the talent they possess. Don't let them be secrets, for this music needs to be heard. "Adult Album Alternative" radio should be all over this.
A Very Special Album.......2004-10-07
Peter Mayer has been Jimmy Buffett's lead guitarist for 15 years. Sadly, his incredible guitar playing and song writing, which has inspired 7 fantastic solo albums, seems to be a well-kept secret within the Buffett fan base and a small but dedicated fan base for Peter.
But that fan base is growing every day thanks to consistently great new releases, such as "Musicbox."
This album has all of the great attributes that make Peter such a great songwriter, musican and performer. The songs are lyrically deep and introspective, and feature likeable textures created by the world-class musicans that make up the Peter Mayer Group.
This includes artists like Roger Guth and Jim Mayer, accomplished musicians who share the stage with Peter in Jimmy Buffett's band. But it also includes appearances by legendary jazz drummer Dave Weckl, and the extremely accomplished and diverse songwriter, pianist and producer, Jay Oliver.
With all of this in mind, the album still has tremendous pop value, and Peter's virtuoso guitar playing and crystal-clear voice combine with these other incredible musicians to form 14 great songs.

Customer Reviews:
Great vocal virtuosity.......2005-04-07
This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.
Christoph (Berlin, Germany)
Confuzzled.......2004-01-03
While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.
An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02
American popular song, whether standards, show tunes, jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."
This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.
Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.
The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.
more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20
I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).
I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.
I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.
At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.
The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.
delightful art songs.......2002-01-02
rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.
carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.
this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.
anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.
one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

AWESOME.......2006-03-05
THIS CD IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD. ALL OF THE TRACKS ARE SO VERY STRONG IN LYRICS AND CONTENT, NOT A WEAK SONG ON THE WHOLE CD. I URGE ANY MUSIC LOVER TO PURCHASE THIS ONE FOR THEIR COLLECTION. I MUST HAVE PLAYED IT EACH DAY FOR 5 MONTHS STRAIGHT.

Featuring both renowned and lesser-known English composers who flourished between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries, this collection is indispensable for lovers of great songs and great singing. It comprises 33 songs of great variety: Elizabethan plaints of love and death, Roger Quilter's famous settings of Shakespeare, Tennyson and Waller; the lovely title song and "Linden Lea" by Vaughan Williams; and A. E. Housman's moving lament for young lives lost, "A Shropshire Lad," in Arthur Somervell's beautiful setting. Surprisingly, the two most venerable composers, Hubert Parry and Charles Stanford, are represented respectively by a parody on love and two Edward Lear nonsense songs. There are Benjamin Britten's charming folksong arrangements, settings of John Masefield's roistering sea shanties by Frederick Keel and Peter Warlock, and two settings of Yeats' magical "The Cloths of Heaven," one by Thomas Dunhill, the other by the Welsh composer Dilys Elwyn-Edwards, the only woman included on the record. Michael Head creates his own contrast with a swaggering song about money and a setting of the Lord's Prayer. The music throughout is utterly enchanting. Its melodic and harmonic contours and pastoral atmosphere make it unmistakably, though indefinably, "English." The performance is beyond praise. With Martineau as matchless collaborator, Terfel can color and adapt his glorious voice to fit every mood, character, and expression, from dreamy, yearning tenderness to decisive vigor. He ranges from full sonority to a delicate, floating mezza voce; there is mournful nostalgia and drunken defiance, as well as passionate ardor and humorous, sarcastic rapid-fire patter-songs. Terfel's diction is so clear that one hardly needs the texts. --Edith Eisler

Memories of Kathleen Ferrier.......2006-02-24
I bought this CD because it contained "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" and "Silent Noon". It should have contained "Fair House of Joy". I had heard Kathleen Ferrier sing these songs previously with such exquisite beauty that I thought that no other rendition would satisfy me. Bryn Terfel sings these songs with such grace, style and beauty that I doubt that his performance could be easily surpassed. His and Kathleen Ferriers' styles are so embracingly warm, discerning, affectionalte and tender that it is difficult for me to pick between them. So guess what I play them one after the other, alternating whose CD I play first. This is one you should purchase!
Silent Noon.......2006-02-10
Silent Noon~ Bryn Terfel is a very well done recording of English songs. Terfel is a quite accomplished singer and vocalist but some of the tracks sound a bit alike and some of the lyrics are less then stellar. And sometimes his deep vocals some out of place with songs that were meant to be sung by amateurs and not opera singers and this becomes apparent on many tracks. The book-let is well done and the photos are nice (if a bit boring and his clothes look drab). Even so this is a good album not to be missed for his stunning (if sometimes over the top) vocals.
disappointed.......2005-09-20
considering the magnitude of Bryn Terfel as a star, it's almost a let down. Granted the songs are beloved by some, still does not fully validate to create an album.
Silent Noon never sounded better........2005-08-05
This is one of my fvorite collection af art songs and Bryn Terfel does a fantastic job of interpretating this great classic song cycle. His voice is dramatic enough yet gentle enough to allow the listener to feel what the composer is portraying.
Silent Noon, Too big a voice.......2005-07-14
Those familiar with Bryn Terfel could hardly argue that his physical and vocal presence is generally enormous! If we can travel back fifteen years to his early days at the Welsh National Opera, we would hear this enormous presence combined with delicate subtleness in the great character bass-baritone roles of Mozart such as Figaro, Masetto, and Leporello. An enormous open-throated voice combined with sensitive heart-felt interpretations have made Bryn Terfel the most celebrated and commanding baritone voice of his generation. Only in his early forties, Bryn Terfel has made legendary recordings of Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro, Falstaff, Elijah, and the Brahms Requiem.
However, Opera megastars such as Bryn Terfel do not always portray art song well. This may be due to the intimate settings of art song, particularly English art song, and the mammoth instruments that try to interpret them.
Let us speak of the Victorian English Art songs found on this CD. Many of these songs were written for the amateur singer to be performed at his/her home. Typically, accompaniments in this style are light and often lack inner voice movements. Many times they are chordal, and vocal lines often float on the fifth of a chord. These characteristics yield to very colorful, lyrical, and sensitive singing. The title track, Vaughan William's Silent Noon, ought to be one of the highlights of the disk. Instead, Bryn's voice is rather thin in color (maybe trying to blend with the light accompaniment) and we loose the intensity of the singing voice and the beauty of the vocal line.
Generally lighter voices do not overpower accompaniments while maintaining the intensity in their singing. Very often they bring a more appropriate dynamic range to this subtle genre. Take a listen to Stephen Varcoe or Stephan Roberts; you'll see what I mean.
On Terfel's latest album Silent Noon, the accompanist Malcolm Martineau plays wonderfully while trying to compliment the robust nature of Bryn's singing. Notable favorites on this disk include Roger Quilter Elizabethan songs and Arthur Somervell's rarely heard version of A Shropshire Lad.
It is worth a spot on your collection but it should not be remembered as Bryn's greatest recording.

Album Description
The Elephant's Baby is indescribably witty, urbane, slick and all around unique. Fader has the proverbial way with words and her imagination is a frightfully bizarre living room full of animal noises, weird lovers, threatening furniture, strange childhood stories, and the occasional romantic holiday. It's all played out as cabaret (she calls her ensemble The Vaudevillains), part New York 1999 and part Berlin 1927. It's a cabaret act that has gone off its meds. It allows for nursery stories with masochistic leanings, simple love songs that catch you off guard, and a subtle sexuality and blatant carnality that are disarmingly sweet and slyly dark...
Arranger and conductor Damon Camona has assembled an orchestra of strings, woodwinds, percussion, reeds and brass that harkens back to the Carl Stalling ensembles of Looney Tunes fame. He has them spinning like tops, turning on a dime and a whim...It bubbles, growls, pops, and snaps, evoking merriment and foreboding in equal measure, lush to a fault, edgy to distraction...
[Fader and Carmona] seem to have fed each other's strange sensibilities to produce one of the more unique American Recordings I have heard in recent years."

The Cat's Meow........2006-08-08
Refreshingly cool. Back-alley-smart. Street-sassy. Capricious. Non-cliched. Captivating. Intriguing. Humorous. Elegant. After-hours Martini mingle. The Cat's Meow. At times the album sounds simultaneously gritty and debonair--kinda' like Midnight Cowboy's Ratso in tux. That's my brief FIVE star review for Clare Faders "Elephants Baby." If you like this I'm sure you will dig her other musical creations as well. Do yourself a favor, enjoy one of her international concerts as I have in Gothenburg, Sweden! Stefano Musitano, Sweden

Clare Fader has mastered bringing cabaret back to life. Her debut album contains some great songs and shows promise for the future (her future would produce an even better album a little while later).
1. Animal Charm - quirky, catchy, and fun... a sing-a-long type of song. A
2. Sister Of Mine - another catchy song. B+
3. The Wine - fun, quirky, and catchy... this song was featured on MTV's The Real World for a reason. I dare you not to sing along. A+
4. Love is the Cruelest Cliche - a slower song with strings, oboe, and piano backing Ms. Fader. B
5. Drunk on Skin - great lyrics, great music, Clare's done it again. A-
6. Wedding Day Lament - a slower, storylike song that'd fit perfectly into a musical. B
7. Alice - my least favorite Clare fader song... it's slow and not overly catchy... doesn't seem to fit well on the album, in my opinion- but I'm glad it's here, because it's something else from Ms. Fader. C
8. Johnny - the album picks back up in pace with this one... a great sing-along. A
9. Cabin Fever - another one I can't help but singing along to. How does she do it? Great lyrics. A-
10. Queen - a slow-down point again... but not necessarily bad. Another song that'd fit well into a musical. B
11. Isle of Summer - the climax of the musical that is the album. Wonderful way to close the album. A
Alternative Listening .......2005-08-12
I was interested by this album from what I heard of the track "The Wine" especially the use of German made almost Garbo like in sound. I was pleasantly surprised at finding a kaleidoscope of listening pleasure whith each track containing its own unique sound and thoughtful lyrics - listen to "Drunk on Skin" or "Johnny" and be amazed. I am looking forward to listening to more of Clare Fader in future.
The Next Big Thing.......2005-07-31
I respectfully disagree with M.Elkins, I think ELEPHANT'S BABY is for everyone, at least everyone with the merest hint of taste.
THE ELEPHANT'S BABY is both wonderfully retro and perfectly contemporary at the same time (not an easy trick to perform).
Clare Fader's voice is spectacular, the arrangements superb, but what puts THE ELEPHANT'S BABY over the top, and what makes Clare Fader feel like "The Next Big Thing," is her incredible song writing ability. Each song is a well executed short story in and of itself. Her tales are fairly twisted, but in a sweet rather than dark way.
I urge you to buy it now so that when Clare Fader is famous in a year or two, you can say, with haughty delight, "Oh, I've been listening to her for years!"

Jana's songs are of a rare breed. Pure, honest, unpretentious....Jana is a true original - above and beyond. The album comprises material of many genre's including Singer/Songwriter, Jazz, Folk & Rock. Fantastic music & Vocal production work.
Customer Reviews:
This CD is by Jana Thornton, not Jana Mashonee.......2007-04-08
Troy Santi's March 31 review got it right, this Jana is not the one who did "Flash of a Firefly". The photo in the CD liner is of a blonde white woman (Jana Mashonee is Lumbee Indian, at least enough that it shows in her face)who- by indications of her website link (nothing like Ms. Mashonee has)is a woman named Thornton.
The musical style is as Amazon describes it, not too bad at times although I found myself skipping ahead pretty often.
This Jana's voice might be pretty good but the music tends to overwhelm it, not like the Jana most people buying the CD are expecting.
Amazon really needs to check closely when singers have such similar names, I know I can't be the only one who wouldn't have bought this CD if they'd been correct in who/what they associated it with.
CAUTION: Not the "Real" Jana.......2007-04-01
FYI. This is not the beautiful, talented, native american singer Jana who produced Flash of a Firefly, American Indian Story, American Indian Christmas, plus various singles. The other reviews made it sound as if it could be and even Amazon's editorial review is somewhat vague. They should be a little more clear when there are two artists of identical names. Seems as if others thought as I did since Amazon shows those who bought this album, also bought all of Jana's other albums. Just wanted all to know since this is not readily apparent.
Worthwhile !.......2004-06-24
Jana's music subverts traditional structures by moving freely without paying heed to convention. The opening track, "For You", is a fine example of this - the song has only one line without rhyme, which is repeated at various junctures throughout the track. By doing so Jana makes her first track with neither traditional verse/chorus structure nor typical rhyme schemes and predictable song segments. In fact, unlike most albums, the music here doesn't feel segmented at all. Rather the songs feel natural because the usual swift transitions from verse to chorus are gone and replaced by music that more gradually rises and falls.
The instrumentation on this record is unpredictable as well. Disparate elements exist throughout the record - from the hard-rock guitar wail at the end of the folk laden "Enchanted Minds" to the soft soulful patches on the otherwise funky "Lucky Day". Several tracks on what could be characterized as a new age folk record represent genres by mimicking their conventional forms. "Private Gates" is the repetitive blues track, "Many a Time" the rocker which attempts to break Neil Peart's record for the most drum rolls in a single track.
Jeff Tweeter and Jeff Thornton produced this record to good effect making heavy use of echo and layering to give Jana a slightly different voice on virtually every track. Acoustic guitars sound lucid and dominate the soft bass and drums. Considering the wide assortment of styles on Smoke & Mirrors the production incorporates different elements to better suit the specific songs. Overall the production and instrumentation combine to make this a worthwhile record.
Jana's vocals are beautiful, strong and melodic.......2004-06-05
First of all, you need to know that in listening to this CD you are going to hear sounds and stylings which cross many musical borders - from light, ethereal pop to harder-edged pop-rock. Along the way, you'll notice an overall infusion of light jazz elements, and of course, Jana's soaring vocals.
Jana's vocals are beautiful, strong and melodic. The musicianship is absolutely topnotch.
The production is strong, even and sensitive to the music and the vocals.
She sings about love & life in a very simple and straightforward way.
To me, this CD is very very good, and Jana's words and melodies carry the tunes very well.
I would recommend this CD highly to anyone who is interested in a laid-back pop/jazz feeling or to anyone who appreciates very high-quality playing in that genre.
INTELLIGENTLY WRITTEN, ARRANGED AND PLAYED.......2004-06-05
The music on "Smoke & Mirrors" is pleasingly difficult to categorize. I hear what
I would describe this as folk rock, new age, r&b pop. It is by no means elevator music or sleep inducing yet it is peaceful and relaxing.
The music is very groove laden and layered. The lyrics are more to create an atmosphere or point the way to a mood than they are literally telling us a story.
Jana does all the writing of words and music and Jeff Tweeter plays all the instruments. I'm quite impressed with his versatility and the way he has shaped the sound. It seems a perfect match to Jana's poetry and expression.
This is a unique sound that is intelligently written, arranged and played.
