not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

I'm on your side..........2005-12-07
This should've been a bigger seller for Jennifer, a very good cd that was overlooked by her weight loss and the major problem of signing with Arista records!
the first single 'I'm On Your Side'(also recorded by Angela Bofill)got some airplay, displays Jennifer's powerful vocals, this cd has nice mix of ballads and mid-tempo R&B cuts, it's a shame that someone with her talent hasn't done a full length R&B cd since this 1991 release..
An Outstanding CD.......2004-07-10
This is an outstanding album of Quiet Storm ballads. There are soulful, robust vocals on every song. The singles "Love Stories", "More N More" & "I'm on Your Side" are excellent as is the other songs.

Customer Reviews:
A good, solid contemporary blues record.......2004-08-29
Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson is no Muddy Waters, even though he played with Muddy's band in the 70s, but "Slammin' On The West Side" is a really solid slice of contemporary Chicago blues.
It doesn't smoke all the way through, sure, but there are plenty of highlights, including a rocking, piano-driven rendition of Buddy Johnson's "A Pretty Girl (A Cadillac and Some Money)", the swaggering "I Ain't Doin' To Bad", the slowies "Early In The Morning Blues" and "Sittin' On The Back Seat Of A Greyhound Bus", a few nice, soul-flavoured numbers ("It's Good To Me", "Hey Little Girl" and "Every Woman Needs To Be Loved"), and the acoustic "Get Up And Go" (which is actually "Bottle Up And Go" in a slightly different guise).
Johnson is backed by a tight, down-to-earth combo (two guitars, bass, drums, piano and occationally a Hammond B-3 organ), and while his voice isn't terribly powerful or distinct, he is an adequate singer, and fans of the classic West Side sound should enjoy this fine set of soul-tinged blues.
No flashy guitar, just good blues.......2000-07-01
It's true -- he goes through many different styles of blues; from the delta/acoustic "The Woman I Love" to the slathered-up-with-grease kind o' funk of "It's Good to Me". What I really enjoy about this album is that Luther allows the other musicians in his band play solos in his songs, the horn is really nice. Good for both parties and after-hours!
A lot of fun for your money.......1998-06-24
What you'll really love about this CD is the many styles of Blues that Johnson explores in less than twenty songs; you'll get the famous West Side (Chicago) Electric Blues, Acoustic Blues, well done Blues covers, pseudo-jump blues and songs that will make your speakers start dancing. This CD is a must have for fans of Electric Blues. Play this CD at your next party all the way through......twice, and then some.

blues on the southside rather dull.......2006-01-15
When i first heard this album over thirty years ago I gave it 5 stars, but hearing it again i think it's good but NOT the greatest album i've ever heard
Probably Homesick's best.......2004-04-25
"Homesick" James Williamson's 1998 album was called "Last Of The Broomdusters", and he is indeed.
Originally a rhythm guitarist in his cousin Elmore James' band The Broomdusters, Homesick James plays smouldering slow blues, tough mid-tempo grinds, and up-tempo boogies backed by a superb little combo which includes Jimmy Reed's lead guitarist Eddie Taylor on bass, Bo Diddley's legendary drummer Clifton James, and Howlin' Wolf's sometime pianist Lafayette Leake, one of the best in the business.
Probably the best album he ever laid down, "Blues On The South Side" is the reason why Billy Boy Arnold's 1963 album is titled "More Blues On The South Side".
It is not the most original blues record ever released, and Williamson's stylistic similarities to Elmore James are obvious - as is his apparent fondness for John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Good Morning Little School Girl", which is recycled as "The Woman I'm Lovin'".
But Homesick's playing is tough as nails, and his expressive vocals make up in intensity for what they lack in pure power (just listen to his rendition of Robert Johnson's "Stones In My Passway" and Tommy Johnson's "Big Road Blues", re-worked as "Lonesome Road").
The sound is excellent, digitally remastered as early as 1990, and every song is worth a listen...no need to keep the remote nearby. Not everything is as immediately memorable as Elmore James' best sides, sure, but there is more than enough good stuff here to keep any fan of classic electric blues with plenty of grit interested for the entire 37 minutes.
4 1/4 stars - highly recommended.
Homesick James.......2001-06-29
Homesick James never quite got the accolades that his legendary cousin Elmore did, but I can assure you as a huge fan of both, he is just as powerful in his playing and singing.. There is rumor that during the Fire/Fury sessions that Homesick played for Elmore as a sideman on, Homesick even played lead on certain cuts such as "Homesick's Blues" but gave the credit to Elmore who actually was playing 2nd guitar not lead. Homesick even claims to have taught Elmore the Dust My Broom Groove which is probably the most copied and emulated guitar lick ever.
This 1964 setting is just pure Chicago Blues. Drums, bass, and piano lay a mean groove and let Homesick weave his slide guitar and anguished vocals through one of the best sessions I have ever heard. Standouts include the burning slow groove "Goin' Down Swingin' and a version of the aforementioned "Homesick's Blues" that includes the Dust My Broom slide groove. I can honestly say there is not one letdown on this recording. From start to finsish this is Chicago Blues the way it is supposed to be, powerful and passionate. It is a credit to Homesick that now in his 80's is still performing festival dates and occasional shows. I looked for a long time to find this whole session after getting 4 track from it on another CD, I strongly urge anyone who likes Chicago Blues and/or slide guitar to purchase this without hesitation!!

The Best of the Best.......2006-02-17
This is absolutely the first Irma Thomas collection I'd buy...I agree with the reviewer who says it has the highest concentration of great early songs.
The Razor and Tie "Soul Queen of New Orleans" set is very good, too (mastered very well by Steve Hoffman), and catches three greats this one misses ("Cry On," "Long After The Night Is All Over" and "Hittin' On Nothin'"), as well as some strange obscurities and historically interesting misfires unavailable elsewhere. (Irma attempting Motown???, etc.)
BUT....this Kent collection has a superior mix of "Break-A-Way"...and a VERY mysterious and superior alternate version of "It's a Man's Woman's World." No matter what the notes claim, this is NOT Pts 1 & 2 of the single, but a different edit that contains a far more feminist and funny monologue than the single. (The actual side 1 of the single is on the Razor and Tie collection.)
This collection also contains the following super-essential songs missing from the Razor and Tie: "Baby Don't Look Down", "Wait Wait Wait", "Somebody Told You" "I Haven't Got Time To Cry" "Some Things You Never Get Used To" "Look Up (When Ever)" "(I Want a) True True Love", "Two Winters Long", "Gone" ....and two or three others I don't care about so much. But...that's ELEVEN recordings not on the Razor and Tie that you really, really need to hear. The mastering is excellent, too.
I'd probably follow up these two collections with something containing the remainder of the 16 Allen Toussaint-produced Minit sides, though most of them are on one or the other of these collections. Unfortunately, the CD I have of those complete sides, "Ruler of Hearts", has incredibly bad sound. I'd hope that one of the other more recent collections has improved on it.
But again, start here.
--.......2003-09-18
This compilation is a straight gas. That's not to say that every song is great, but there aren't any bad ones. Irma's voice is one that no longer exists in the world of R&B - muscular without being aggressive or theatrical, and sensitive without being breathy and fey. Her failure to come up with a crossover hit is the only thing that's kept her on the 'B-list' of legendary R&B singers, though that's been OUR failure, not her's.
She's perhaps best known for her original version of 'Time Is On My Side' which the Rolling Stones took to the top of the pop charts in a drastically inferior form. The Stones also robbed the melody to 'Wish Someone Would Care' and grafted it right onto their 'Heart Of Stone' with no apologies.
The songs on this compilation only cover her work from 1962-66, but it's arguably the best work of her career. There's a stylistic consistency in the songs that isn't always there with non-songwriting singers of that era (see Ruth Brown), with a few exceptions like the poppy, up-tempo 'Break-A-Way', the early motown sound of 'Two Winters Long' and the smooth '(I Want A) True, True Love' that's vaguely reminiscent of Gladys Knight & the Pips with its male background vocals. 'Take A Look' is a wonderful kind of heartbreak. 'Wait, Wait, Wait' and 'Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)' are both country-esque, and one can easily imagine Patsy Cline singing them as well.
Anyone who digs classic R&B will dig this, and those who don't know any better should also hear it, for you can't find singing like this anymore in the diva culture modern R&B has cultivated.
