5 out of 5 stars "Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-22

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Battle does it again.......2006-03-29

Ms. Battle covers musical styles from baroque all the way to spirituals on this CD, and excels at each song she sings. My personal fav's are "Frondi tenere...ombra mai fu" "Mein herr marquis" "Vocalise" "Swing Low" "Piangero la sorte mia". One impression I get when I hear this CD, is that Ms. Battle had fun with each one of these songs. She sounds like she is enjoying singing them and is totally relaxed with full confidence in her voice. So many singers you hear sound tense, but not here. It's hard to explain really, but generally, when a singer is struggling and fighting to sustain a good sound or sing artistically, you can sense it. This CD is would make a wonderful sampler for someone new to Ms. Battle's voice. It is a shame, though, that she is such a "diva". Nevertheless, this is a delightful recording and I would strongly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars A charming, lightweight song recital.......2005-09-18

This recital is a pale shadow of the great one Battle gave with Levine from Salzburg, so I wasn't satisfied with one track after another of pretty, charming singing without deep musicality or committment. battle is capable of much beter. Her fans will be pleased, and that's about all.

5 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle Takes On Carnegie Hall.......2005-04-04

Every big artist wants to perform at Carnegie Hall, its' a sign of a true career. For Kathleen Battle, this must have been quite a night. This album captures that great night, solely built around her, in which she sang aria after aria in a spectacular showcase. Handel was a specialty of hers, and the lyric texture and coloratura heights are nearly dizzying. She makes it all seem so effortless. Furthermore, Miss Battle was a magnificent French singer- most coloratura sopranos excell in the French repertoire- as Beverly Sills did and as did Madie Mesple. However, Battle always makes me feel mixed emotions. One the one hand, she does have a classic, lyric-coloratura voice that nearly became extinct after the reign of Beverly Sills and even earlier with the likes of Lily Pons and Amellita-Galli-Curci. Battle has a bright, golden voice, capable of sweetness and refinement without hysterical declamation or any unpleasant sounds. It's such a shame she did not behave proffessionally. The stories were true. She behaved like a diva holding a whip! She was ungrateful and selfish and couldn't work well with her colleagues and co-artists. She was always late to rehearsals, left early, refused to socialize or ride in the same car with her other artists and went far beyond perfectionism- she behaved like she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But for all these shortcomings, we love her voice. Her fans, and yes she has fans, continue to buy her albums even though she has long disappeared from the world of opera that once tolerated her but said enough is enough........

5 out of 5 stars I'd give this CD 20 stars if I could! Sheer perfection!.......2003-12-07

God made the nightingale, and somewhere down the line, he touched a little girl named Kathleen Battle with what he originally gave to that bird from the beginning of creation. I cannot, for the life of me, believe that a voice could be so beautiful. I hear it, I marvel, but sometimes the sheer incredible beauty of this woman's vocal artistry is mind altering and surreal. Even the nightingale must suffer a moment of jealousy when a Kathy Battle tune is played!(This is bordering on blasphemous I know, and I beg forgiveness!) But Kathy Battle is simply amazing! This CD captures her at her best.
I'm not an opera buff by any means, but I love the human voice and great singing. There is not a bad song in the bunch. Like one reviewer, I too, am not a big fan of the spirituals segment, but I have a higher tolerance for it than she..I can still enjoy them for what they're worth.

Just BUY this CD...buy more than one if you can. One for home and one for your car. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.

P.S. Can someone tell me if this Carnegie Hall recital was also filmed and where I can get a copy of it? I cannot find many filmed recitals of Kathleen Battle anywhere. There used to be many at the Metropolitan Library in NYC, but all they seem to have now are her appearances in operas. I remember seeing a Met recital of her in a red gown on the cover of the vhs box, but they must have retired it. Any Kathy Battle fans out there who can help me get a video collection going, I would be most appreciated! (ryanmarcus1@juno.com)

Having miraculously survived decades of personal and creative turmoil, Brian Wilson re-emerged in the '90s to reclaim his incomparable pop music legacy with joyous tours that celebrated both the music that made him a star and Pet Sounds, the album that forever secured his legend. Utilizing the remarkable, dedicated band of musicians who backed him on those shows, Wilson re-entered the studio to once again pick up the promising, yet ever fitful recording career that last yielded '96's vocally gorgeous, if production cloistered Imagination. It's that renewed dedication to organic musicianship, coupled with a robust slate of Wilson songs new and old that will thoroughly delight admirers of the Beach Boys mastermind.

Three of Wilson's '60s/'70s contemporary superstar/admirers contribute performances: Elton John's forceful take on "How Can We Still Be Dancing" evokes the rollicking, youthful prime of both legends; Paul McCartney's guitar and vocals are considerably more subdued on the typically wistful "A Friend Like You"; Eric Clapton's searing guitar nearly overwhelms the chunky rhythms of "In the City." There's also a touching reunion with the disembodied voice of late brother Carl as Brian completes the latter's unfinished mid-'90s track "Soul Searchin'," but the real star here is Wilson's enduring muse. He variously evokes the spirit of Spector past and his old band on "You've Touched Me" and "Desert Drive," respectively, then reunites with Smile/Orange Crate Art collaborator Van Dyke Parks on the rustic, fiddle-adorned skewed romance of "The Waltz." The lovely, timeless title track effortlessly dispels any whiff of nostalgia, securing its place as one of Wilson's best contemporary ballads and delivering on this album's most rewarding promise: Brian is indeed back, and gloriously so. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The creative genius behind The Beach Boys' phenomenal hit recordings and the landmark album Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson is widely considered the greatest American-born popular music composer of the rock 'n' roll era. On this, his third solo release, the legendary artist returns to stellar melodic form with a disc's worth of original compositions and unforgettable performances. Superstar cuts include "City Blues," boasting lead guitar from Eric Clapton, "How Can We Still Be Dancing," spotlighting Elton's vocals and boogie-woogie piano, and "A Friend Like You," written by Wilson for McCartney, and featuring guest vocals by Sir Paul himself! Also features several Brian Wilson/Andy Paley songwriting collaborations from the '90s, including the title track and "Soul Searchin'," a moving duet with Brian and his late brother and fellow Beach Boy, Carl Wilson. Featuring artwork by Peter Blake, best known for creating the cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and booklet includes complete lyrics and in-depth liner notes by Wilson historian, David Leaf.

5 out of 5 stars YOU THE MAN BRIAN....WELCOME BACK BRIAN....A NICE RECORDING...................2007-01-17

Beautiful recording by Brian Wilson. Some may consider it boring and slow, but I dont. Brian may still be getting his recording knack back and hopefully he will be doing more recordings to enhace his skills. Brians duets with Paul McCartney, Elton John, Carl Wilson, and Eric Clapton are simply splendid vocally. "Soul Searchin" with brother Carl Wilson is my favorite on this cd. "A Friend Like You" with McCartney is a nice classy duet both vocally and harmonically. "Rainbow Eyes" a nice Psychedelic trip back to Brians heyday of the 1960s."Saturday Morning In The City","You've Touched Me" and "Gettin In Over My Head" are all great songs, nicely written and hold up vocally despite Brians older voice. I like every track on this cd and I can't stop listening to it. I admitt Brian could still hold his own vocally. For those who consider this recording boring and slow, I look at it this way, hopefully Brian will make more recordings and excercise his amazing skills for even better music. Highly recommended listening for Brian Wilson fans, Beach Boy fans and music fans in general. WELCOME BACK BRIAN EVERYONE MISSED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It Grows On You.......2006-05-10

Listening to today's Brian Wilson is a surprising and uplifting experience. While the voice tremors a little, and sometime reaches for those notes, his musical sense is still exciting, warm and inventive. I find his work inspiring today becuase he actually survived the last 30 years, versus many of his peers who are now gone, tragically, taking their genius with them. This album has some great cuts on it, and while a first listen may leave you wondering, a second and third listen builds a comfort like a new shoe that just needs a little breaking in. This is a favorite CD of mine, and with some help from Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Elton John and even Carl Wilson, it is a happy keeper. I highly recommend it, and hope he'll release another soon. Brian has a great future, and I want to enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Tepid at best........2006-03-19

I am a Brian Wilson Fan. Been a Beach Boys fan forever. I thought the "All Star Tribute to Brian Wilson" was out of this world - espesh the Billy Joel segment. This CD however is rather monotonous. It is difficult to listen to. I haven't listened to it all the way thru yet. Too boring. This CD is for Die Hard Brian Wilson Fans Only!!

5 out of 5 stars lookingforward&back...allsmiles...nofrowns..........2006-02-05

great cd. fav songs Getting in Over My Head, and practically everything from Make a Wish onwards. The guest stars do a great job at what they do best ie E. John does his melodic rockpop cabaret piano thang; Clapton rocks and Wilson LETS him; McCartney brings his poppy se'f and doesnt overshadow Brian but complements him in the best sense of the word. A great sense of friendship is felt in each piece...

The album as awhole does so much by incorporating alot of the BB 40+ years of harmony and innovative instrumental compositions that Wilson has specialized since the latter half of the 60s. You have doowopish, rock, pop, jazz, countrywestern, carnivalesque influences all thrown together as only Wilson knows how...maybe even some beatlesque and latin jazz stuff there too...

...a terrific album that encomposses many infulences, yet Wilson makes it all so natural as only the greatest musicians can. Alot of american guitarists (as well as the beatles, led zep, even the who and the grateful dead, back in their prime...) do this kind of harmonious collage/combination of different musical styles to create something new and accessible...who says pop music cant have creative depth to it..

...for me this was a great experience and after over a year I still enjoy it alot...thats what made me write this while listening to it right now, for the 2nd time today :-)

Dont let Her Know is quite stunning...

4 out of 5 stars A credit to Brian.......2005-10-25

This album is a great listen for all Brian Wilson fans. It just makes you proud of being a fan of his and must make him proud having songs on it collaborating with the likes of Elton John, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. And especially with his late brother, Carl. Gettin In Over My Head has all the ballads and pop songs that we love about Brian. A fantastic listen.

IT'S JUST VIOLINS!!!!!! there are no lyrics, just sh*tty violins! it would help if songs even sounded in any way like a sum 41 song!! lol! honestly! just listen to the preview of 'fat lip' and you will know what i'm talking about!! i'd give it 0 stars if i could!! overall, this CD is a big bag of SH*T!!!

    1 out of 5 stars what?.......2005-07-23

this should have gotten 0 stars. anything by the string quartet tribute is s***. why do these people make tributes to any good rock group? this is just patheticly made. NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!! (i listened to the samplers.) it makes me wanna puke. you should not maked good hard rock music sound like s***!! Disgrace to sum 41 and any other cd like this made.

    4 out of 5 stars odd.......2005-07-15

this cd is odd, i must say. I wouldnt have expected anyone to do a tribute to a new band like this. Nothing against sum 41, but lets face it, their songs arent that unique or moving in any way. they arent pioneers of their genre or of anything really. they werent deserving of a string quartet tribute.
    thats just my opinoin.
otherwise this is an all right cd.
    they did a nice job.

    by the way...
    that other reviewer is right.
the samples are a bit screwed up.
as far as i know, the "still waiting" sample sounds a lot like "summer" to me.

    3 out of 5 stars just read.......2005-06-09

i didnt actually buy the cd but i listened to the samplers on the amazon site. i dont know if it was just me but the songs werent matched up to the right names. for example still waiting, that isnt how it goes. i should know i listen to them every day and have all their cd's. it might just be me?

5 out of 5 stars I thought this would suck...........2004-10-05

Was I freakin' wrong or what? This CD is totally sick! You can play it for your friends and see if they can figure out what songs that are playing. My best friend said it is actually cooler than Does This Look Infected .... I don't know... it is prety damn good, but I think I probably like the real thing just a little bit better. But this CD really rocks and I was surprised by how good it is. It definately doesn't suck.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

I purchased this a few years ago in Canada while on a trip to King's Landing. This is a very soothing, relaxing type of instumental music with background sounds of different birds, from Loon to Goldfinch. Well worth buying. Very well done CD.

    Album Description

From the sleepy sprawl of America's Mile-High City comes The Fray, a Denver-based foursome whose melodic pop-rock songs and soaring vocals resonate with sprawling tapestries and tales of hopefulness and heartache.

5 out of 5 stars Let me ride! .......2006-09-04

Every once in a while there is a song that just hits right. It does not matter what it is about or whatever, hearing it is just a great experience. This is one of them. What is it? The way the words are sung, The melody? The hook? The bet? Perhaps all these things work in concert with each other for that perfect song.

This is the first single from (whaddayah know) Denver, Colorado's own The Fray, from their debut Epic release called "How To Save A Life". The title song runs second to "Cable Car".

If you enjoy Coldplay - sorry but I am another one comparing them to Coldplay - you may enjoy this for it's resemblance to them. Whether it is good and/or bad, perhaps both, it seems that bands tend to imitate others to the point that several bands are all too easily compared to the initial band's signature sound. Although I do enjoy Coldplay, I have yet to hear this type of song from them, but then again those "perfect" songs come few and far between.
