It's true that these latest re-re-[re-, etc.]issues are not being forced upon anyone who already owns other copies of the albums. But for those of us who don't, it's frustrating that the most widely available editions of Costello's albums are now inferior to the previously released ones, which will no doubt become pricey and more difficult to seek out once they're out-of-print and the last lingering copies have been bought up. I've liked EC's music for a long time, but since he's an artist whose work can be heard in popular media, and since I own much of his music in one form or another, I've never felt compelled to go out and buy his albums, title by title, as they've been reissued. Now I feel obligated to buy the Rhino reissues while they're still available.

So, yes, it does suck that there's no incentive to buy these Universal re-releases other than the fact that they're what's in-print. The sound quality is nothing new, and there are none of the incredible bonus tracks that made the Rhino reissues so great. Maybe someday Universal will reissue them *again* with a track or two added to what was released by Ryko and Rhino, so they can shake as many pennies from fans' pockets as possible.

Until then, I'm getting the Rhino CDs while I can, and I recommend them to new fans or others who are buying the albums for the first time.

Up until now, the repeated re-reissuing of EC's brilliant catalogue has been a delight and a thrill, with pleanty of new material added to the Ryko reissue, and then staggering amounts of it in the Rhino releases. But who in their right mind would buy any of these new reissues? How moronic does Hip-O think Elvis's fans are? I don't even buy the line that they are suitable for new EC fans. All fans, new and old, should own the Rhino reissues. This set doesn't even cover the Warners albums. I'm a long time, tragic EC fan, but he should be ashamed to sanction this latest reissue program, at least so far. The plans for later release of new material, and a deluxe MIAT look much more worthwhile.

When Elvis burst on the scene in 1977, he told an interviewer that he was going to quit after three LPs and that artists go on too long in their careers.

Amen, Elvis! Now why didn't you follow your own advice? You'd have been a classic and never have inflicted on the world "Punch the Clock" and the Brodsky Quartet recording of the Juliet Letters. Has any artist EVER suffered such an artistic decline? Well, yes, probably, but you'd have to think hard to come up with one.

As others have pointed out, this is a pointless re-re-re-re-compilation. Apparently it's for really busy people. You know, the ones who can't take the time to click the ORDER button several times for individual purchases. If there really are people like that purchasing this, I predict they won't make it through listening to the whole set. Again, they're too busy.

All of us audiophile/EC fans are fighting hard to resist these digipaks. It's comforting to know that so many owners of the Rhino 2-disc reissues feel the way I do about this new set - absolutely unnecessary. Put 'em out in SACD format and maybe I'll buy the catalog again.

There seems to be a bit of a tug-o-war between fans who have bought the originals, re-issues and re-re-issues and those who mark the re-re-re-issue as something noteworthy. I fall into the former category and find that it makes sense (from Costello's accountants' point of view) and doesn't make sense (from the point of view of any consumer who already owns three copies of "Tokyo Storm Warning"). Personally, I'll wait until the Starbucks re-re-re-re-issue in 2010.

This is the original Elvis Christmas Album as released in 1957. It was considered very controversial when it was released (as were most Elvis releases during that time), but it was still a huge hit commercially, hitting number 1 on the Billboard album charts (before they created a separate category for Christmas albums).

Eight Christmas songs were included in his original 1957 Christmas album along with the 4 Gospel songs from the "Peace In The Valley" EP. His original Christmas album was repackaged and re-released in 1970 with the 4 Gospel songs being replaced by "If Every Day was Like Christmas" (which was originally released as a single in 1966) and the non-Christmas song "Mama Liked The Roses". The 1970 edition was then re-packaged and released on CD as "It's Christmas Time" a few years ago.

Elvis' performance on the songs here are excellent! Several of these recordings have become Christmas classics, still receiving significant radio airplay nearly 50 years after they were recorded!

While this was a great album in its day, it has since been superceeded. All the songs on this album are currently available on the Elvis "White Christmas" CD along with "If Every Day was Like Christmas" and "Mama Liked The Roses" and every song from his "The Wonderful World of Christmas" album which was released in 1971. Unless you just want to buy this CD for its historical significance, I would recommend that you buy the Elvis "White Christmas" album instead. You will get a lot more Christmas cheer!

        The material is shapeless and Elvis's voice is hopeless. Comparing this material with the best in the career of either songwriter would make you feel wan, slightly depressed, and vicariously embarassed. A worthy experiment that might more worthily have been kept private. Truly bleh.

        Elvis Costello was at his best on his first three albums. Since then he has lost focus and intensity, and spiralled down into mediocrity. But with this collaboration he has crash-landed at the very bottom. This is pure schmaltz.

        Why a songwriter like Elvis Costello, who USED TO be able to write good songs, would collaborate with a burnt-out hack like Burt Bacharach is utterly beyond me. The current critical "re-evaluation" of Bacharach is utterly invalid. Bacharach always wrote schmaltzy, stupid, over-orchestrated cocktail-lounge love songs. They are no more insightful or interesting than the schmaltzy stupid love songs that Neil Sedaka, Jimmy Webb, the massively overrated Stephen Sondheim, or any other late 60s-era cocktail lounge piano players have written.

        Artistically this is just about as "important" as any of those early 90's Linda Ronstadt albums where she covered cocktail-lounge music. Like those albums, this is music for overweight white yuppies who like to sit around sipping wine in their Barcaloungers after the kids have gone to bed. It has nothing to do with who Elvis Costello used to be, and it is perfectly irrelevant and disposable.

        In short, a shameful end to Costello's career, the worst recording in his canon, even more pitiful than "Almost Blue." And as far as the abominable Bacharach, well, at least he's got those idiot rock critics' approval now. So you can be sure that like his other songs, we'll be hearing these in elevators all over the world for the next fifty thousand years. One of the low points in the history of recorded music.

        Every song on this album is excellent. The live tracks are worth paying extra for it. It is very listenable and worth every penny.

        This is one of the highlights of Elvis's long and illustrious career. I have seen him live on over 25 occassions and these songs have become the stand-outs in his live act. For that reason alone, spend the extra and get the set with the additional live CD to hear the songs stripped back to vocal with piano accompaniment. You will love it!

        I'm sure that you must have heard about this CD by now. It is truly amazing. You will not have heard anything like it before, and probably won't ever again. The "edge" on Elvis' voice adds pure emotion to this collection of beautiful songs. At first I thought these songs were for "old fogeys" but I now believe that these are possibly the best songs he has ever recorded. The bonus live disc is the icing on the cake - especially since I was at the Melbourne concert where the live versions of In The Darkest Place and Painted From Memory were recorded. "Do yourself a favour!"
