Product Description
ATOLL is one of the most renowned Seventies French Progressive rock bands, if not one of the best. Singer André BALZER, drummer extraordinaire Alain GOZZO and their colleagues display a music both complex and very elaborated, with sophisticated arrangements and constant melodic research. Recorded in 1974, "Musiciens-Magiciens" reveals itself as a great debut album. Undeniable masterpiece of the band, "L'Araignée-Mal" (1975) saw the arrivals of the talented guitar player Christian BEYA and a violinist obviously influenced by Jean-Luc PONTY. The two keyboards players know perfectly how to use their Mellotrons and Moogs with accuracy, into varied and tricky compositions. This opus is the most ambitious piece of work ever made by ATOLL, recorded as the band was at the peak of its form. The inspired and masterfully played jazz-rock of "Cazotte n°2" is the perfect counterpart of two long tracks filled with lyricism. And watch out for the conceptual title-track clocking at twenty minutes ! The whole puts ATOLL besides YES or KING CRIMSON for musical sophistication, as well as THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA. An impressive calling card, isn't it ? The four first ATOLL studio albums are now reissued by the Musea label in Digipack format, reproducing the original vinyl cover.

An impressive calling card, isn't it ? Recognised then both for their melodic perfection and for their composing and arranging skills, the members recorded "Tertio" (Without a second keyboardist or a violinist) two years later, resolutely performing a refined Progressive rock in which the singer's peculiar voice became verbal music. "Rock Puzzle" (1979) presents a more concise and varied music that followed the same orientation as the one taken by ANGE and MONA LISA at the same period. The first two albums include some live bonus tracks, and the fourth one three previously unreleased tracks with the great John WETTON ! Disappointed by the split-up of UK, the British singer-bassist had seriously thought about joining the band from Metz. He gave them such songs as "Here Comes The Feeling", performed a few months later by ASIA ! The four

With Tertio, this album has been considered as their best. I agree. Their music reminds me of Mahavishnu Och. instead of YES though. Especially their rhythm section is really strong. Try, you will be satisfied (also, do not forget Pulsar, another great band from France, for whom, I would give 5 star!)

        4 out of 5 stars A fantastic musical trip.......2007-03-09

What a complex and intriguing album! This is a french prog rock masterpiece, full of passion, tempo changes and ideas. Everytime you listen to this record you grab something new from its musical magma, a real wall of sound in perfect 70's prog rock style. That doesn't mean Atoll is just an early copy of Genesis or Yes: this group has its own brand, blending rock and poetry, rythm and melody in an ever changing and surprising balance. I recommend this album to all prog fans.

4 out of 5 stars This is their best stuff!!.......2005-04-09

It's one of the best French prog albums ever made...sometimes their style is different, closer to Mahavishnu Orchestra, but in the other circumstances their standard prog is "aligned" with the same impact, as within the albums by Ange and the other best Romantic Prog Bands!Well honestly I don't get crazy for their hystrionic vocals, neverthless I recognize their personal and very interesting approach inside their experimental music passages, reminding me sometimes of the fusion style by Arti& Mestieri!!For instance the track Cazotte no 1 is different, in comparison to the music "clichè" within the progressive rock scene at that time, but also the other tracks are excellent and complete this good work...well check it out at least!!

        5 out of 5 stars Unchecked Virtuosity.......2004-03-01

This stuff is extraordinarily good progressive rock with tinges of jazz/rock fusion that features intricate ensemble playing; excellent and occasionally histrionic vocals (in French); virtuosic soloing and playing by all musicians (they are all talented beyond belief); and spacey mini-moog and mellotron parts. The compositions are superb and display shades of 73-74 King Crimson here and there with a little 71-73 Mahavishnu Orchestra thrown in for good measure. The track Cazotte no 1, which clocks in at 6'00", is the best example of the Mahavishu influence and the lengthy live version of this piece included at the end of the disc is just unbelievable. The centerpiece of the disc however is the massive 21'20" L'Araignee-Mal suite, which is absolutely excellent and equals the English in terms of the quality of the arrangement and the level of ensemble and individual virtuosity. I cannot say enough good things about this band, and if you only get one French prog CD, make it this one. Also recommended is TILT by the Italian group Arti & Mestieri (1976), which is quite similar stylistically.
