On "Lies For The Liars", the third studio album from The Used, one of rock's most fearless and incendiary bands ratchets up the heavy factor. "The Bird And The Worm" is the first track to radio and video.

Sound effects and overdramatics........2007-07-12
Utah-based post-hardcore giants The Used are back for a third run with longtime producer/auxiliary band member John Feldman. While the loyalty the band shows to the decidedly hard-working sometime Goldfinger frontman, and the preservation of the mentor/student relationship they share is commendable, it's hard not to wonder what the group might sound like without Feldman at the controls. His squeaky-clean production is predictably intact on 'Lies For The Liars' as is his trademark employment of superfluous sound effects where appropriate. Only, this time it's as if every vacant space was filled with some oddball sample or sound effect, almost to the point where it actually detracts from the songs. In fact, one might actually wonder how much of 'Lies' was crafted by The Used and how much Feldman was responsible for.
As for the songs themselves, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with them. In fact, most of 'Lies' is remarkably solid. Hard-driving 'bangers like 'Pretty Handsome Awkward' and 'Hospital' are some of the heaviest, most groove-laden songs the band have ever written while the romantic balladry of 'Earthquake' and 'Find A Way' clearly display why frontman Bert McCracken is one of contemporary punk's best vocalists. Even the rhythm section has become more prominent (see the disco breakdown in 'Hospital' or the start-stop tempo changes in 'Wake the Dead').
In the end, the worst thing that can be said for 'Lies'(aside from Feldman's inability to comprehend the word "moderation") is that The Used are still relying on the same formulas and song structures that comprised their first two albums. 'Lies', although flawed and far from grounbreaking, remains a solid, enjoyable hard rock album.
And you call yourself a fan?.......2007-07-12
Wow. I don't know which amazes me more - the album or the response it's getting by "fans" of The Used. Do you kids kiss your mothers with those lips?
First off, I have to get something off my chest about some of the reviews this CD has recieved. Are you guys deaf? This CD is fantastic. Exclamation point, exclamation point, bold, underline, exclamation point. I must say, having listened to the first two albums, "Lies for the Liars" definately wasn't what I expected. Much like Linkin Parks latest CD "Minutes to Midnight," I had to listen to the CD three or four times to get used to the changes the band has made as they have evolved. But by no means was I disappointed. What difference does it make if they're music is slightly more emo than what you normally listen to. If you think you're a fan and then you ditch a band because they're new music has a new "label" (label as in emo/punk/goth/etc, not as in music label) then you're NOT a fan. A fan would stick by their band and grow and evolve as the band does. Maybe you just need to grow up.
As for the album itself, "Lies for the Liars" is an excellent show of The Useds talent. The two ballads are beautifully written and give the album a softer touch (that apparently some people can't handle.) The rest of the album is upbeat and fun to listen to. If you truly like The Used, give "Lies for the Liars" a listen.
Not The Used we know, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be!.......2007-07-09
Great CD. My personal favorite is The Bird and The Worm, which is very good lyrically and musically. I'll rate the tracks as follows:
The Ripper - 5/5 Very good song, one of their best if I might say so myself.
Pretty Handsome Awkward - 3/5 I rate this one lower because the music sounds the same as The Ripper with a couple changes. Makes you think you're listening to the same song. However, still a good song.
The Bird and The Worm - 5/5 Obviously a very good song. My favorite on the cd. Very good beat, and very catchy.
Earthquake - 4/5 Your typically song about a boyfriend/girlfriend leaving/breaking up. Not bad, and every cd needs one of these right?
Hospital - 4/5 Almost sounds like emo. You know about death and such. Pretty decent song.
Paralyzed - 4/5 Another good song, very catchy tune if you ask me, could listen to it over and over.
With Me Tonight - 3/5 Another song about a boyfriend/girlfriend. Guess it's ok, the music is basically drums, trumpets, and clapping.
The Dead - 4/5 Here's a good song definately worth listening to. Very good music, that goes great with the good lyrics.
Find a Way - 2/5 This sounds like a song avril lavigne would sing. Not a song that The Used should sing. Reminds me of springtime with flowers blooming and animals everywhere.
Liar Liar - 5/5 Good song, very good tune, catchy tune. One of the better ones on the cd. Careful though, cuss words in this one ;)
Smother Me - 2/5 I didn't know that Alicia Keys joined them. Piano music with soft singing. Not one of their better songs. Sounds like something you would have played at a wedding.
I give the cd 4 stars. If it wasn't for two of the songs sounding like they needed to be sang by Avril Lavigne, and 3-4 sounding more like Panic at The Disco, than Alternative Rock it would get 5 stars, but I don't have anything against emo so I still give it 4 stars, just if I want to listen to panic at the disco I'd put their cd in, not The Used. Not The Used we know, but it's not as bad as some people say.
The Used.......2007-07-05
Awesome CD. As for the actual quality of the physical CD its self... Ok that's boring, but The Used did a great job on this one!
AMAZING!!.......2007-07-04
I am a HUGE fan of The Used and this album DID NOT disappoint me. Out of all their songs, I have yet to find a bad one. My favs on this cd are:
Pretty Handsome Awkward
Earthquake
The Bird & the Worm
Hospital
Paralyzed
Wake the Dead.
To tell the absolute truth it is very hard to pick a favorite. This album has the perfect mix of screaming and slow songs. I also noticed that they used more experimental sounds. I would have liked a little more hardcore screaming like on their first album, but what he does scream works. I recommend this record HIGHLY.

Amazon.com essential recording
When it comes to making albums of epic proportions, few rival this magnificent production that a trip the band took to New York City inspired in 1973. The underlying story is of a street kid named Rael who, thanks in part to the realities of big city life, undergoes a weird and mystical transformation. Containing extended instrumental sections showcasing the extraordinary talents of Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins, as well as the expressive vocals and often disturbing lyrics of Peter Gabriel, this is the album that located Genesis truly on the map. --Paul Clark
Customer Reviews:
The Path not Taken.......2007-06-16
This is the greatest achievement of the band Genesis. SinceTrespass they had been building toward a musical monument like this. And here they construct it.
I listen to the album now with deep regret. "Lamb" shows the innovative directions the band was going in. Back in NYC anticipates electro-rock (like Gary Numan) by 4 or 5 years; the Eno-esque soundscapes, while dated now, show a desire to experiment; the intense complexity of the songs is offset, unlike in their prior work, by a solid foundation of bass and drums, driving rhythms (just listen to the bass and drums in In the Cage); the songs are generally shorter and more varied in tone and style.
What could have been had they continued down this path ... such remarkable possibilities unrealized. But the creative chemistry of the original line-up was lost when Gabriel left and then, a few years later, Hackett. Genesis survived the transition into the 1980s, but only by selling themselves by the pound. They collapsed into a pop band.
For me, then, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, represents the apogee of the Genesis genius, a signpost to a path not taken.
Genesis at thier peak.......2007-06-16
This record is just truly great. I always wanted to hear this record, because I always enjoyed the concept albums of Rush. Because I have always liked Genesis around the time of Phil Collins, I wanted to give Peter Gabriel a chance. This record is considered his magnum opus so I gave it a shot. It really is as good as everyone said. If you like Genesis or the idea of concept albums, get this CD. It really is a great one.
Opera Prima.......2007-06-08
Here you can find the essence of Genesis and Peter Gabriel.
Also have the vinyl, but decided to go digital, and both sound alike.
You can buy it and enjoy it, no doubt.
True perfection!.......2007-05-28
What a classic! Modern eqip truely brings out the hidden side of this masterpiece! Vintage perfection!
"Dock the Dick...".......2007-05-03
This is a terrific album and the whole experience has already been thoroughly documented in these reviews. Top-notch musicianship, daring lyrics, addictive hooks, innovative concept, the whole bit.
I've read lots of speculation about The Lamb's plot, but I think one possible theory has been overlooked. I believe it's given away in the second verse of the first song on the album:
... Metal motion comes in bursts,
But the gas station can quench that thirst
Suspension cracked on unmade road
The truckers eyes read Overload
And out of the subway,
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Exits into daylight, spraygun hid,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
A few seconds after the introduction of Rael, I believe he's immediately killed by this out of control truck with cracked suspension careening out from an alleyway, and lying dead on Broadway his soul is reborn and sent on this quest through some sort of "purgatory" (?). The album documents Rael's path to salvation with reflections on society, his own life and adventures in the afterlife. Rael has become the sacrificial lamb of societal decay, and in the end he finally does right by regaining his own lost love of self and others - at last discovering the "it." that life and compassion are made of.
One of the most amazing aspects of this album is that it allows a unique experience for each listener. The story lends itself to endless speculation and countless interpretations so it never really gets old. The lyrics are just vague enough and the music layered enough to constantly re-discover it. Once you "get it" it will haunt you for a very long time. Simply an amazing accomplishment.
Buy it, listen to it, listen to it five more times, then try to put it down. I dare you.

Nice Boys Don't Play Rock N' Roll.......2007-06-30
While Guns N' Roses debut album "Appetite for Destruction" (1987) initially failed to make a major impact, over the course of a few months, with singles like "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child `O Mine," almost overnight, Guns N' Roses became the biggest band on the planet.
To capitalize on the band's success, Geffen re-released Guns N' Roses first release, the "Live like a Suicide" (1986) EP along with four new recordings. Together, these eight songs made up Guns N' Roses second album "GN'R Lies" (1988).
"Live Like a Suicide" had been released one year before "Appetite" as a way for Geffen to introduce Guns N' Roses to the public. Although it was released under the "Uzi Suicide" label, that was just a front for Geffen. It was thought that if the EP had been released under an indie label it might have given the band added street cred. And while "Live Like a Suicide" is supposed to be a live album, that's not really the case. Crowd noise was added to the recordings, to which singer Axl Rose would later decry as "contrived."
While "Live Like a Suicide" or "side A" of "GN'R Lies" isn't as powerful as AFD, these are still great songs. While they may not have been recorded in front of an audience, they still have a live sound as they don't sound overproduced or have a lot over overdubs. Hopefully, however, one day "GN'R Lies" will be re-released without the faux crowd noise.
The opening "Reckless Life," featuring Rose's mightily signature wail and Slash's signature screeching solos, can be seen as a precursor to "Welcome to the Jungle." Rose Tattoo's "Nice Boys" is another fine hard-rocker and follows nicely. An early GN'R classic and the best song on "Live Like a Suicide," the groove-laden swagger of "Move to the City" has a clear element of vintage Aerosmith. A cover of Aerosmith's "Mamma Kin" is good, if not great.
The second half of "GN'R Lies" consists of four new acoustic recordings, demonstrating early on how versatile GN'R were. The Izzy Stradlin penned "Patience" is just plain terrific. A gorgeous balled, it's not overdone or overly sentimental, yet shows a sensitive side to the band none-the-less. "Used to Love Her" a song about killing your wife/girlfriend is one of the band's more misunderstood songs. As Rose states in "Live Era" (1999) while introducing the song, it's just a joke, a fantasy.
The country-esque "Your Crazy" is an acoustic version of the same song released a year before on "Appetite." While the "fast" AFD version of "Your Crazy" is probably the album's weakest song, the slower version on "GN'R Lies" is one of GN'R best recordings.
Guns N' Roses most controversial song, "One in a Million" closes out the album. This is the song that Axl Rose/Guns N' Roses detractors single-out when they refer to either Rose or Guns N' Roses as racist and/or homophobic. Listening to the song, it's easy to see why the song generated a storm of controversy upon its release. However, to simply condemn Rose and GN'R would be simplistic and a knee-jerk reaction.
Does "One in a Million" have racist, xenophobic and homophobic undertones? Yes. Is Axl Rose a white supremacist that hates gays? No. Essentially, the song is a gritty, honest confessional taken from the perspective of an ignorant young man who has grown up in Indiana his whole life, and upon arriving to LA, has negative experiences with blacks and gays. It's a song from the perspective of how Rose felt at the time and it doesn't reflect his current world-view.
Overall, GN'R's "Appetite For Destruction" and "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" (both 1991) may be more satisfying than "GN'R Lies" but this album still contains many gems and is overall a great collection of songs. This CD is also recommended for fans that didn't care for the more artistic leanings of "Use Your Illusion" but like the rawness of AFD.
On "I Used to Love Her".......2007-06-21
People, people--"I Used to Love Her" is NOT about killing and burying a girlfriend, it's about putting down and burying a dog. The word that in clean contexts means "female dog," but which is usually used as a derogatory word for women, takes its literal meaning in this song. That's the joke. That having been said, it isn't a very funny joke.
As for my review, I bought this album a long time ago for "Patience," but rarely listen to the whole thing, since it sounds just like what it is--a cobbled-together album to keep the group in the spotlight. And I do object to "One in a Million." This album is pretty much for completists only.
Patience.......2007-03-23
Patience is one of the best song I have ever listen to. Sorry for Gn'r fans but the rest is just 'ok'.
Why 100 Bucks ?.......2007-03-18
I am writing this message , for the people who might have clicked on a "GN'R LIES" , that might have a very high price next to it.It could be the price is for the limited MFSL 24 K Gold Ultra Disc/original Master Recording. If you are a GN'R obsessed fan , that might be for you , but if you are just looking for the regular CD , you can find much cheaper here at Amazon on another GN'R LIES icon , if you keep looking!
As for the songs , I am an avid fan , but looking at a perspective , of what I thought of "LIES" when I first heard it , I was not impressed with the "Live Like a Suicide" stuff (Mamakin,Reckless Life, etc)at first , but it eventually grew on me , and now I would recommend to any fan.I love the acoustic stuff on here the best , and even though the lyrics might cross the line with some people , the overall songs are a great listen.I like "Used to Love Her" , "One in a Million" along with "Patience" as well.Great sing alongs, that give you great escape.
GN'R Runs in Place.......2007-03-17
Uncomfortably positioned between the amazing Appetite for Destruction and the miserably indulgent Lose Your Illusion project, this is very much a stopgap release. And like most stopgaps, it's a complete middle-of-the-road project. Combining the pseudo-live (read: in the studio with crowd noises dubbed in) EP Live ?!#* Like a Suicide and a collection of new, acoustic songs, this could've made a great four-song EP, rather than a lousy eight-song LP. I like Reckless Life, a fierce rocker that should by all accounts be a classic, arguably the most underrated GN'R song out there. Same for their version of Mama Kin. On the other end of the specturm are Nice Boys and Move to the City - neither really make much of an impact on me.
Onto the new stuff. First, the good news - this contains the Top 5 smash Patience, easily one of the group's best songs ever, once again nailing the sensitive-guy routine (which had also previously been done on Sweet Child O' Mine and would happen a third time on November Rain). It's the perfect song - hell, I even like the whistling at the beginning. For whatever reason, I prefer the acoustic You're Crazy to the one released on Appetite - I don't see why it wasn't included on the album in the first place, as it would've added some variety and pounds the living crap out of the full band one.
Okay, now we've got Axl's infamous, borderline-sociopathic stuff. What the hell inspired him to write One in a Million? Was he trying to offend every group of people imaginable, or had he just been dancing with Mr. Brownstone on the Night Train (wink wink nudge nudge) while he was writing it? Even when you look past the lyrics, it sounds like a demo, with Axl singing vocals that sound like he was being castrated as he sang or something. Same with Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her). Jeez, Axl, what the #@)*!) did the world do to you? I mean come on, the guy wore a frickin' Charles Manson shirt, for the love of Eric Clapton (or whoever it is you worship). The sad fact is, he probably just wore the damn thing for the shock value, since it would take somebody even more psychotic than Axl to support that moron. But I digress.
Okay, so what's the point of Lies? Uh, to get Patience on an LP, I suppose, and to make Life !?@* Like a Suicide more widely available. Ooh, ooh! I know! And to hold fans over while they worked on those bloated Illusion discs.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
With the rise of more and more forms of media, the American storytelling tradition has become increasingly fractured. Praise be then for This American Life, a weekly radio anthology of stories that never fail to move even the most casual listener. Lies, Sissies, and Fiascoes purports to be a best-of compendium, but at two discs there's plenty more where this comes from. --Randy Silver

Are you a sucker for a well-told story--one that'll make you hoot with pleasure, drop your mouth in disbelief, tear up with empathy? If that be the case, you're likely already a fan of the brilliant beyond-hip This American Life. If you're not yet familiar with the Public Radio show and its ingenious host, Ira Glass, Lies, Sissies & Fiascoes will tickle your ears and engage your sense of wonderment. Underscored by adroitly chosen musical bits from Jonathan Richman to Liz Phair to Yo La Tengo, The Best of TAL springs into action illustrating the criterion for true fiasco with Jack Hitt's lively narrative of an uproariously bad production of Peter Pan. David Sedaris recounts reeling off insults and complaints in iambic pentameter as a teen bitten by the Drama Bug (which bites "Jews, homosexuals and plump women who wear their hair in bangs" the hardest). Dishwasher Pete tells how he duped the Letterman show, Scott Carrier gives a moving account of how his life unraveled and came back together during the season he conducted interviews with schizophrenics, and Ira Glass sounds off on getting over heartbreak. --Paige La Grone

A few great ones, the rest mediocre.......2004-06-04
I enjoy listening to T.A.L. whenever I'm able to catch it, which unfortunately isn't very often. I had anticipated that this disc would contain the show's very best segments, but it was a bit of a mixed bag.
For example, "Shooting Dad" by Sarah Vowell is a terrific essay about Sarah's relationship with her gunsmith father. Well-written, funny, sharp and poignant. But compare that with the dreck that follows: "Get Over It!" by host Ira Glass, where he mopes at length about his recent encounter with a former girlfriend. Sarah Vowell once stated in an interview that radio stories are "edited down within an inch of their lives", but Ira's segment -- full of his own deep sighs, his laughter at his own comments, his voice often choked with emotion -- seems to have undergone no editing whatsover. It reminded me of the scene in "Broadcast News" where William Hurt's TV reporter character inserts a shot of himself shedding a tear during an interview. It reeks of "look at me, aren't I so 'real'"; that is, until you realize that it was created with multiple takes.
As for the rest, I enjoyed Sedaris's "Drama Bug" and Bindler's "Hands on a Hard Body", but many of the others struck me as mediocre for one reason or another.
This American Life from PRI is fabulous!.......2003-12-16
What a fantastic "best of" This American Life CD. It was the first and one of the best. I have been a fan of the program distributed to public radio by PRI, Public Radio International (NOT NPR) for years. This American Life describes such wonderful stories in such a unique way, and creates "driveway moments" for me! It truly is some of the best public radio has to offer and its story telling is up there with ANY medium.
Mostly good stories from NPR's radio show.......2003-01-29
As a fan of NPR who no longer lives in the US, I jumped all over the chance to buy a best-of compilation of "This American Life". The 2-CD set is split into funny stories on the first disc and serious ones on the second, although I thought both "Hands on a Hard Body" and "Christmas Freud" had some nice funny bits. Also on the second disc are the very chilling pieces "Test" and "Apology Line".
The only segments I did not like in this set, in fact, are the first one on each disc; these happen to be the ones that feature the show's host Ira Glass. I found "Peter Pan" (a piece about a small town drama production that goes awry) to be patronizing and overly long; the remainder of the first disc was very funny. Opening the second disc is "Get Over It!", a segment in which Mr. Glass explores an awkward weekend with an ex-girlfriend for whom he still has feelings. Although it has a good ending, I thought that he was just begging for sympathy with this story, and I felt manipulated. It's admirable in a way that Mr. Glass is willing to showcase his private pain for our entertainment, but not if he's going to make it a pity party.
But otherwise I think the compilation is great and I thank him for creating and hosting the show. I recommend it for anybody who's been a fan of the show (and most of you will probably enjoy Mr. Glass's pieces more than I did).
disappointed baby boomer.......2002-11-22
perhaps I'm too old to appreciate these stories. I was too impatient to hear several of them out to the end, though all I was doing was driving to a destination, without alot on my mind. A few were good, but not good enough to immortalize on a CD.
Absolutely compelling and entertaining!.......2002-10-17
I have long been a fan of This American Life, and when I went to review this CD at Amazon, I realized that I have owned it since 1999. I have listened to it in bits and pieces several times since then, but just recently did I get a chance to listen to the entire thing from start to finish. For those of you who are looking for some really good listening for a long car trip or perhaps an introspective vacation, you have found the right CD.
Lies, Sissies, and Fiascos is a wonderful blend of sarcasm and sentiment, of tenderness and hilarity. Host Ira Glass's voice is soothing and familiar, and you really can't lose when it comes to anything involving David Sedaris. Sandra Tsung Loh's entry is one that is particularly memorable to me. She tells about how her relationship with her father is enriched when she views him through the most unlikely viewpoint imaginable: that of a local punk rock band, which has idolized her father and thinks of him as some kind of spiritual icon.
I immensely enjoyed listening to this CD, and I will return to it and find the stories familiar, not repetative (as I would with some audio books). Highly recommended.

Amazon.com essential recording
Power, Corruption & Lies established New Order's identity separate from its previous incarnation as Joy Division. Containing "Blue Monday," one of the most sacredly important dance songs of all time, this album truly stands not only as New Order's most defining moment but perhaps as the most standard-setting moment in alternative dance. Yet as definitive as they may be, New Order have outsmarted any copycats. Owing in substantial part to Peter Hook's prominent and melodic bass lines, New Order's songs have always aspired to a complexity that maintains the band's timelessness. Rarely formulaic, New Order's songs are seldom overwhelmed by a four-on-the-floor throb. But interesting rhythms are just one facet of this musical diamond. Their foreboding, grim, and often just plain heartbreaking lyrics present a contradiction to most dance-pop songs, whose lyrics are almost always uplifting or even evangelical. With this album, New Order cut a path for themselves that was rarely, if ever, explored by other artists. --Beth Bessmer

Why you may have to throw away all of your previous ideas on music........2007-07-06
New Order , in the throws of casting off the shadow of ian Curtis suicide; desperatly trying to find a voice of their own have created one of the greatest pieces of art in the world. This record stands as the quintesential piece of work from the manchester based band. From the opening "age of consent" to the pop mastery of "the village" to the icy futuristic prophecy known as "blue monday" , they consistantly push the envelope of what could be considered pop music. Bernard Sumners child like whimsical lyrics, Peter Hook's edgy and intensly original bass melodies; and not to mention the near robotic almost perfect timing of stephen morris's drumming make this a listening experience that is rivaled by few others. You may think it a bit much for some one to write such praise but honestly , listen to it then decide for yourself. You will be shocked.
A solid album with two classic New Order songs.......2006-05-02
"Blue Monday" probably stands as the very best techno-pop dance song that New Order ever did, and, indeed, must be considered one of the best songs of this genre. But "Blue Monday," and its instrumental (and somewhat redundant) counterpart "The Beach" are only a part of what makes "Power, Corruption and Lies" such a strong album, the second in New Order's discography. A much different song, but just as compelling, is "Age of Consent," with off-beat lyrics and bass line you can't get out of your head (copied, by the way, by "The Jesus and Mary Chain," towards the end of their classic "Head On"). These two songs alone would probably make this a worthwhile album. Other strong tracks include "586" (I would have cut out the introduction and just gone right into the danceable part), the ethereal "Your Silent Face," and "Leave Me Alone."
P.C.& L. does have it's moments where it sounds dated. Synthesizers in the early 80's, of which New Order (too?) often heavily relied upon, could sound cold and tinny. I'm also not usually crazy about drum machines. But there are moments where Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook really play the heck out of their guitar and bass repectively. Sometimes you hear a little "Joy Division," and other times "The Cure," but, after all these years, New Order has remained a unique band who has evolved, but kept true to its own voice. I might be in the minority, but I think that the band's best albums have been their last three ("Republic," "Get Ready," and "Waiting for the Sirens Call") which have a lusher, more melodic sound than their predecessors, with Summers' voice continuing to grow better with age.
New Order has remained relevant and productive for over 25 years, and that, by itself, says everything.
Total Classic.......2006-02-28
One of the best rock records of all time. One of the best dance/electronic records of all time. Way ahead of the pack at 1983?!, timeless and not stuck in 80's /new wave AT ALL if you ask me. Much more musically varied and interesting than much of today's electronica scene as much as I like all of that too. Early electronic dance music with a post-punk attitude. Emotionally moody and yearning. Great imagery. Sumner's vocals are weak and strained but ultimatly that becomes a huge charm as it seems vulnerable and..well..punkish in spirit in an odd way. Also..a surprizingly soulful record too with the italo-disco element...but this time existentailly wounded. Funky and pyschedelic too with all the key bending stuff on the synths. If all alternative and dance music could be this interesting. All this AND one the best record covers of all time by Manchester graphic designer Peter Saville also..way ahead of the curve. A reason to have it on vinyl however(which includes a secret message in the color codes on the the back of the album which refer to Factory Records' release catalogue system!). This record is a total winner.
New Order's Apogee.......2006-01-14
If you think "Blue Monday," New Order's signature New Wave dance track, is the only song worthwhile on this 1983 release, you couldn't be more mistaken. As I'm sitting here attempting to collect the necessary words to write this review, I hear wave upon wave of Gillian's magnificent synths in "Your Silent Face." With an album filled with songs of this high calibre, where can one go wrong? I suppose I've got to say that POWER, CORRUPTION, & LIES is THE New Order album, my favourite out of the band's (currently) eight LPs. While the others have their own charm and spirit, this one perfectly captures and blends the post-punk ethos of Joy Division with the new lease on life that is New Order--and it's the one I find myself drawn to the most whenever I feel the need to pop in a CD and enjoy some music. Incessant, stacatto, almost militaristic beats courtesy of Stephen Morris and an assortment of drum machines icily pulse in the listener's ear while the aforementioned synthlines, delicate and forever lovely, create a dreamy, lush, and warm effect. This album is thus a very strange mixture of frost and warmth as displayed on the cover, a still-life of roses (now the desktop picture on my personal computer). When you're finished looking at the cover and you pop the CD into the stereo, you're instantly grabbed by the urgent riff of "Age of Consent"...and you're not let go until the last notes of "Leave Me Alone" fade away (well, unless you choose to listen to "The Beach," the instrumental/dubbed version of "Blue Monday," which was rather uselessly tacked onto the American re-release). While "The Beach" may ruin the ending flow of this masterpiece ("Leave Me Alone" is the PERFECT closer), "Blue Monday" fits snugly in between its prototype, "586" (quite possibly my favourite New Order song), and "Your Silent Face" (certainly in my top five). If you, however, feel the need to listen to the album minus the "bonus" tracks, feel free to do so. But I've written enough: if you're reading this page and looking for something new, something different, something grand, read some of the wonderful reviews already posted and do purchase this album. I can't guarantee you won't regret your decision, since we all have different musical tastes, but I can tell you that this album changed my life and the way I listen to music--and it continues to do so every day.
##Three miles to go-o-o##.......2005-12-10
After Technique, Power, Corruption & Lies is the next best New Order album. Fragile, delicate, tentative, its the band blinking into the sunlight after the shadows of Joy Division. The opener Age of Consent is a racy opener which declares the band's identity as different from Movement's pseudo-Joy Division gloom. There are plenty of other highlights. We All Stand ambles along sleepily, Your Silent Face is is delicately sombre, Ecstacy features some shimmering drum-work from Steven Morris, and Leave Me Alone is one of the best songs New Order have ever written- a beautiful bitter-sweet lament driven by Hook's two-note bassline. Its a pity that the US version contains Blue Monday, which I think spoils the flow of the album, which is delicate and tentative, wheareas Blue Monday is such an obvious hit single- a stormer which I dont think fits with the rest of the album. New Order left it off the intial release, and for good reason. But, as one of the other reviewers says, maybe I shouldn't be such a purist!

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12
This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Love These Two-For's!.......2007-07-04
This one that features their 2nd and 3rd albums, and the price is nice, and it was smart to leave them at a low price, I can't see the average person taking a chance if this was 20 bucks, can you? And I can get the song again "You're Only Losing Your Heart" (on 3.V), I used to have the cassette of 3.V, but it is long gone. I do have "In Black and White", and many of the songs here are on that one also, along with quite a few from the debut, but Zebra doesn't have a huge official catalog; so it's not really that difficult with the price of these to be a completist for the bands music in this case.
The band has always intrigued me in the style of the singer, his high pitched sound, along with a hard rock sound and melody also seems to be the late 70's meeting an early 80's alternative rock sound. It may not be an complex and progressive as a band like Rush, or Yes, but they seemed to have carved out a niche in the rock world over the years. You don't hear alot of people say that Zebra is one of their favorite bands, but perhaps they need to take another listen to this classic stuff and rethink it?
Zebra is a band to me that really I like just about every one of their songs. Probably the only song I don't like and skip each time is the "La-La Song", and it still bothers me that that one is on the greatest hits instead of "You're Only Losing Your Heart".

amazing.......2007-06-24
i must say, i'm a bit jaded when it comes to trying a new artist based on one song that i've heard on the radio. i mean, how often is it that the rest of the songs can hold up? sometimes it sounds like the 1 or 2 songs were written by someone else, there is that much difference in quality/goodness. i hate that.
the used took me totally by surprise.
every song is horribly catchy, unique (don't you hate it when all the songs sound like a mutation of each other?), and expertly sung with great lyrics. innovative, strange lyrics. thought provoking even. thank god. this album will hold up to MANY re-listenings.
singing style... (which again, was impressive) has elements akin to the way patrick, from fall out boy, sings in their "from under the cork tree" album. he also has excellent range, and versitality.
bully for them, this album is awesome.
best money i've spent in ages.
Amazing.......2007-06-11
I waited a long time for this album, just like a lot of fans, and I'll tell you, it was definitely worth the wait. The album differs in many ways to the first two albums - They tried something new - And they made it work. 'Lies For The Liars' is incredible. I completely recommend you check this out.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidishish!.......2007-06-11
This CD, the 3 studio album from the awesome Utah quartet, The Used. Each song has its own sound, and attitude. It's got great lyrics, very catchy. The music is...indescribable (the good kind) I rate this album a sideways 8(infinity) out of 5.
Anyone who loves music will love this album.

not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.
