A Real Treat! Especially the DVD!.......2007-06-27
This version of "Pet Sounds" is a real treat for fans; the fuzzy green packaging is very sturdily built and is nice to the touch although it remains to be seen how well it will stand the elements over time. As to the discs themselves if you already have a mono and a stereo version of the album then the cd will be nothing new for you. I have never been a fan of duplicating albums with both mono and stereo versions on one disc but for me as I only had a mono version prior to this version, I didn't mind getting this for the stereo version and especially for the DVD 5.1 surround version. What I didn't like was that "Trombone Dixie" is missing and it was on the Dutch version of the stereo version that I used to have years ago.
The dvd has some promo videos and candid interviews with members of the band and especially of Brian Wilson but the sound quality of the DVD Dolby Surround is truly fantastic. You just end up hearing sounds that you didn't know were there when you were just listening to the cd. It's made me decide to forego the cds and to go straight for the DVD whenever I want to listen to the album. For this reason alone I'd say go get this version unless they end up just releasing the DVD in an mlps format the way they have just done with U2's "Rattle and Hum". If they do that in the future, I'd say go and get that if you already have the cd. Oh yeah, and they really should include "Trombone Dixie" in addition the "Hang On to Your Ego" that they included with the cd but not with the dvd as well as the other outtake sounds that were part of the bonus tracks that were released in the 1991 stereo version.
Confessions from a curious listener.......2007-01-20
I must confess, I bought Pet Sounds out of curiosity, since it has been ranked as one of the best albums in history, behind the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. In addition, I also confess that before Pet Sounds I had very limited knowledge of the Beach Boys and/or Brian Wilson's music and after playing it once I sincerely say: PET SOUNDS IS INDEED A MASTERPIECE CRAFTED BY A GIFTED ARTIST !!!.
The 40th Anniversary edition comes with a wonderful DVD that documents the making of this album through interviews and original footage, plus a video showing a visit Sir George Martin made to Brian Wilson's home.
This album is a MUST-HAVE for music fans, and I totally agree with Sir Paul McCartney's views on this album (printed on the CD's booklet), expressing that "NOBODY IS TRULY MUSICALLY EDUCATED WITHOUT LISTENING TO PET SOUNDS"
You can never have too much Pet Sounds.......2007-01-04
Pet Sounds is the ultimate aural experience. I enjoyed the 5.1 Surround mix. I sat in a chair, closed my eyes and drifted into a soundscape of textured notes and voices.
I already own the box set, the 1st CD edition and even an original vinyl copy. It seems that every time I upgrade I am never disappointed.
Purist seem to like the Mono version of the album. I love the all the sounds that scream out of the stereo version.
If you do not have the box set or the other stereo Cd, I would highly recommend this set. It covers everything Pet Sounds that you will want. If you do not care for the interviews and film, you will appreciate the surround mix on the DVD. The box set is more for Brian wilson Fanatics(Myself included) and collectors.
Finally, a HIGH CLASS package for a high class album.......2006-11-11
Brian Wilson made a generation of kids look at love lost/love gained/love period, the way they never had before. It really wasn't an "age of innocence" back in 1966, but it was less complicated than what it would be like in the following decades, having to reconcile issues like E.R.A. amendments, growing tolerance/promotion of homosexuality, H.I.V./AIDS, and, ahem, the preponderance of man-made global warming. SHEESH! Back then we (I was a teenager in 1966) only had love and a war to deal with, beyond getting our school grades up for mom and dad (most of us had both, in the same house back then).
So, this work of art was literally outstanding in its field, and those of us who actually listened to it were challenged with our feelings, thoughts, and actions toward this thing that we called LOVE. It was an absolute shame that Capitol Records was spoiled by their cash cow producers (The Beatles and The Beach Boys) and only wanted more of the same stuff that paid their salaries, and yet couldn't see the "art" part even as it was smacking them in their corporate faces! This album, Pet Sounds, spawned a deeper penetration into mainstream pop music of artistically developed poetry and music. Now we were getting exposed to productions that challenged our senses: abstract forms like "MacArthur's Park", self-divulgences like "17" by Laura Nyro, and of course John Lennon's 2 great anthems "All You Need Is Love" & "Give Peace A Chance".
....all thanks to this work of angst...I mean, ART, by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds". And this package is a fine tribute to its existence...with a Bonus DVD too!
What's better than Pet Sounds?.......2006-11-10
The essence of Brian Wilson. The full bodied sound to the ear not unlike fine wine is to the pallet. This great package gives you your choice of production, both mono and stereo and caters to all the diehard Beach Boys fans with a variety of things, including a DVD to enjoy. A must have for those who never experienced Pet Sounds at its fullest. After all, this is one of the most important albums of all time!

ChiCago, the best movie, the best soundtrack.......2003-11-10
The movie was sensational, it seems almost impossible to capture all of it in a soundtrack, but they did a wonderful job of it. Every sngle song captured the spirit of the movie, it was almost like going to a broadway musical because of the quality of this music. Catherine Zeta- Jones did a amaizing job of singing the songs "All That Jazz", "Cell Block Tango", "I cant Do it Alone",and so many more. This music is almost magical, I would recammend this soundtrack for anyone!
The Best of Chicago.......2003-10-08
If you loved the movie Chicago I'll garenty that you'll fall in love with the soundtrack. You can never get to bored of "all that jazz" with Catherine Zelta Jones singing it, you can tell that she's the real star of the soundtrack. Don't be surprised if you run across "The cell block tango remix" and all that junk, it just didn't blend in with all the other songs, I always avoid it.
great.......2003-08-28
the movie had great songs and great music and this soundtrack captures all of it.
I'm sorry, but this is overrated; get the 97 Broadway record.......2003-08-09
I'm surprised by the enormous volume of glowing, 5-star reviews here. This soundtrack isn't THAT great. Maybe I'm biased. I was fortunate enough to see "Chicago" on Broadway in early 1997 (the matinee right before the cast walked over to Radio City for the Tonys, of which it won 3 or 4). That was a few months after it opened, with the original revival cast: Bebe Neuwirth as Velma, Ann Reinking as Roxie, James Naughton as Billy, Joel Grey as Amos, Marcia Lewis as Mama Morton, and D. Sabella as Mary Sunshine. Right afterwards I bought the CD and have listened to it many times since. So I can't help but be stuck on it. (I even have the 1975 Broadway recording, which I like though not as much as 1997.)
This soundtrack simply does not feature the vocal chops to be found on the Broadway recordings. The music itself is comparable, but certainly not an improvement. And the rap version of "Cell Block Tango" is a too-obvious attempt to take modern pop "stylings" (if you can call it that) into consideration when they are NOT at all relevant here. (Okay, more bias, since I despise rap.) Plus that last track with Anastacia, or whatever her name is, is awful. She tries so hard to sound like a modern R&B singer, but she can't do it. (And, again, I hate modern R&B, so yet another pre-disposed strike for me).
I liked the movie, but it (and the soundtrack) don't hold a candle to the Broadway "original revival" cast. I highly suggest getting that recording instead. You'll hear Bebe Neuwirth wail even better than Chita Rivera did, and James Naughton blows away Jerry Orbach (and certainly Richard Gere, by FAR).
And the DVD version isn't worth it. It really only has a 10-minute featurette that I'm willing to bet is on the DVD that's about to come out. And I can see that some people here have taken Richard Gere too seriously when he mentioned that Renee Z has a Billie Holiday quality to her voice. I laughed when I heard it then, and I laughed again when I see people repeat it here (as if it's their own words--yet they spell her name Billy). Not that Renee is bad (nor is Catherine ZJ), but by no means is she anywhere near the ballpark Billie Holiday is still in 45 years after her death. (And before anyone else takes Richard Gere too seriously: no, Catherine Zeta-Jones isn't really like Dusty Springfield, either).
Razzle Dazzle Me!.......2003-06-15
Wonderful sound track! Anyone, who enjoyed the movie, will certainly relive the experience listening to the CD. I cannot wait for the DVD to be released in August.

When we last left the ever-confounding saga that is Bob Dylan's now-superhuman recording career, he'd reunited with producer Daniel Lanois, with whom he cut 1997's Time Out of Mind, his most coherent and appealing collection in nearly a decade. Now the still-reigning prince of musical contrariety and potent wordplay is back with his most focused, well-played collection since 1989's Oh Mercy, another Lanois production. One listen to the fade-in of the opener "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum" and it's clear that all Dylan's roadwork has shaped him and his band (including guitarist Charlie Sexton) into a mighty musical weapon. And while his craggy howl continues to resonate, it's the songs here that astonish. A sturdy midtempo melody makes "Mississippi" the equal of the best numbers on Time, which it was actually written for. He convincingly puts over the R&B swing (yes, swing) number "Summer Days." "Honest with Me" ("I'm not sorry for nuthin' I've done / I'm glad I fight, I only wished we'd won") is a driving rocker that packs a genuine punch. And the light, lounge-like "Bye and Bye" and the southland ramble "Floater (Too Much to Ask)" show extraordinary confidence. He's labeled these songs "blues-based," but in typical Dylan fashion what would promise to be the most overtly blues number here--"High Water (for Charlie Patton)"--sounds like a banjo-based gunfighter ballad. But then that's this artist's gift: confounding expectations. --Robert Baird
Customer Reviews:
Love and Theft will steal your heart.......2005-09-21
Being a recent Dylan fan, I was drooling to know his latest studio album. So I got my hands on Love and Theft, a double disc set.
Overall this album is excellent. The musicians are wonderful, the sound is crisp, the instruments are varied. The different styles used by Bob make this record very appealing to fans of rock, ballads, rockabilly, blues, etc. The lyrics are very hilarious too, and some of them really make you think, as we have come to expect from Mr Dylan.
Now, we all know that Bob has been singing and playing harmonica for 40 years now, so his voice sounds nothing like it used to in the sixties and seventies. If you have listened to "Time out of Mind", you can make yourself a good idea of how he sounds. A person that does not know him, though, may not be impressed. He has an excellent crooning, though, and this is why "Moonlight" is one of the best songs of the album.
And there are many gems in here: "Mississippi", "Floater" and "High Water" are my favorites. The latter is dedicated to Charlie Patton, the Delta Blues singer and composer. The banjo sounds excellent in this one!
The final track is a beautiful and sad ballad, the longest running song of the package ( the same that he made in Time out of Mind and Blonde on Blonde )It closes the disc just the right way, leaving you with the desire of playing it again soon. And like all Dylan's records, you hear and discover more and more things with each playing. That's why it will steal your heart.
About the two extra songs, the best one here is the alternate version of "The Times". Bob plays his guitar only, so the track is shorter, a bit darker, and very simple. The other one is a traditional song, very sad, and not that good.
If you like Bob Dylan ( and who doesn't? ) , you can buy this record with the knowledge that you get a bang for your buck, and that you are in for hours of pure listening enjoyment.
Now, if you are new to Dylan, I don't think you are gonna like or appreciate this disc. I would recommend getting an anthology first ( the Essential Bob Dylan is an excellent choice ), and when you get to like Bob's music, then don't hesitate to pick this Sugar Baby up.
The Extra Tracks are Worth the Price, Just Extraordinary.......2005-05-05
Still again, after a long hiatus of no albums with original tunes, many people hailed "Time Out of Mind" as still another comeback for Dylan with this record, delivered four years later in 2001, building upon said comeback. Only this time he isn't as eerie, haunting and dark as he was on "Time". In fact at times it seems Mr. Dylan has turned downright playful with his music. We have Dylan kind of crooning on some of the songs in this set of very good rock and roll songs, many of which have kind of a jazzy inflection to them.
And then there are the two extra songs on that extra CD in this set, the alternate version of "The Times The Are A-Changin' is interesting, but in my opinion there was a reason the went with the other version back in 1963. However the price of this set is worth it and more just to get your hands on "I Was Young When I Left Home" which till now had only been available on the "John Birch Society Blues" Bootleg that came out back in the early Seventies. This long, acoustic ballad is just simply extraordinary.
In my opinion Dylan's gravely voice works well with this set and the songs blend into each other making a whole that is much better than the sum of its parts. I play this record quite a bit, but then I play most of his good records quite a bit. Some have said, my Gal Sara, for instance that perhaps I play Mr. Dylan's music a bit too much. Thank goodness I've got an iPod, so that when I'm up alone at night working on the computer or trying to hammer out words on paper with pen or pencil, I can listen to this record as loud as I want. My hearing may be going though, but so what, it's worth it.

not as good as Time Out Of Mind.......2005-02-16
BUT, the song, 'I Was Young When I Left Home,' and although it was recorded in 1961, is one of the most heart wrenching, achingly, beautiful recordings I believe Dylan has ever done. Whoever chose to put it on as a bonus track, thanks.
One of Dylan's Best, Plus Great Extra Songs.......2003-10-02
I've heard it said that Bob Dylan said of this record that it's like "a greatest hits without the hits." Well, when you listen to this masterpiece, that's exactly the kind of feel you get for this album. It's like each of the songs is an old friend, like we've heard them all before. How did Dylan do that? Maybe it's because he recorded "Love and Theft" with his touring band and they were all so used to playing with each other. It shows. In a way this album reminds me of "Blood on the Tracks" the album that I consider Mr. Ds best. Every song on "The Tracks" belongs there, an integral part of the whole. Sure every song stands alone, but together they make a masterpiece. That's the way it is with "Love and Theft." I don't know if this is the best album Mr. D has ever done, cuz I still listen "The Tracks," all the time, but if it's not the best, it's certainly number two. And who knows, after listening to it for another year or so, I may reevaluate that, but for now I'll give "Love and Theft" five stars. This CD is so good it'll make you cry.
As for the extra songs, the version of "The Times They are A-Changin'" doesn't come close to being as good as the original, but it's interesting. However "I was Young when I Left Home," which Sony claims is unreleased, but those of use in the know, know that it originally came out in 1970 on the illegal bootleg, "GWW John Birch Society Blues," is an outstanding piece of work.

True Folk.......2003-07-12
I give this album 13 stars.
I thought for awhile that this was Dylan's best album since Blonde on Blonde. Then for awhile I thought NO, it's his best album since Highway 61.
Then, like Wittgenstein, I changed my mind again, undergoing a paradigm shift, and realized that it is actually his best album since Freewheelin'...
As far as the Theft charges; Malcolm Lowry once said - "If you steal from one person, it's plagiarism; if you steal from everybody, you're a genius." Case closed, the Judge done hammered down his hammer, and we can all leave the courthouse and amble on down into the sunny square outside, where Bob is playing, his guitar case lying open on the bench. The sound of bees fills the air in the background.
Bob has mined the hills of folklore again, and shown us once again what varied and colorful Mother Lodes there are to be found in the Folk. If you haven't joined his jingle jangle travelling band by now, this album will initiate you.

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

Classic Grace.......2003-01-30
Bravo! This CD, is such a great compilation of all Charl's albums. It's sort of sad though that this was a Prelude, to a different type of music.
However I think Charlotte is just so talented and she is getting better in every album I hear her. Bravo!
Great CD and DVD!.......2003-01-08
This is my first Charlotte cd and dvd. I wasn't really into this type of music but I work at a retail store and when I saw her cd fly of the shelf, I wanted to know what the fuss is all about so I bought this cd...and I'm glad I did. I also liked the dvd included. I was awed.
too pretty too bad.......2002-12-27
This album is appropriately dubbed as greatest hits. Appropriately because, judging by how much the voice has deteriorated over the last 4 years, it's unlikely that we'll see more of Charlotte Church's albums. What's needed now is a skilled vocal coach who might (!) be able to restore Church's originally pretty soubrette soprano back to the way it sounded when "A voice of an angel" was recorded. Big labels, shame on you. A talent needs to be nurtured and brought up SLOWLY, so that it could first develop into something. By shamelessly exploiting Charlotte's adorable looks and youth, Sony executives have ruined a promising career before she could even develop into a real opera singer.
Charlotte, if you're reading this, STOP singing now and look for a good teacher. Or just be content as one of richest children in the world.
This CD is SO good! A must for Charlotte Church fans!.......2002-12-20
This CD is filled with her best songs from all of her albums, including new ones. My favorite new ones are "It's The Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." They are all really good! It is the best! Go Charlotte!
