Authentic Chicago Blues From The UK.......2007-01-14

After hearing this original version of Black Magic Woman years ago, I understand why Santana (formerly The Santana Blues Band before the 69' S/T album) covered it in 1970 and why I DO NOT require to hear Santana's version anymore: 1. It's been played to death 2. Peter Green's version give me the chills. 3. Peter Green wrote it. It's simply incredible how many people all these years still think Santana wrote this song. Anyway, English Rose was the 69' American release on Epic that features songs that were on Fleetwood Mac's UK releases. It is usually considered a compilation, but it is still a truely remarkable blues album to have with an odd novelty cover portrait of Mick in drag (dig the ugliness). Sadly, it does not contain "I need your love so bad" which is my second favorite P.G.F.M. tune during the late 60's. With Peter Green's soulful vocals and genuine blues guitar playing and Jeremy Spencer's Elmore James bag o' tricks, it doesn't get much better than this for Chicago blues. All songs are worth the price of admission here and are a perfect introduction to this incredible UK blues band once called Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Epic never released this CD domestically in the US, so this Japanese import (with the usual misinterpreted lyrics) is the only CD version available. Get it.

One of the Best British Blues Albums .......2006-10-16

Their first debut in the states is one of the finest examples of British Blues. This is not the Fleetwood Mac people know today. This is the Fleetwood Mac of Peter Green - a total different band then the one that put out Rumors. This is an excellent album and there are no weak cuts. The moody slow pieces like 'I've Lost My Baby' and Albatross really stand out for me. If you can find this album at a reasonable price buy it.

English Rose.......2006-07-12

I love early Fleetwood Mac, but somehow I had missed this gem. I took a chance and am glad I did. Very bluesy. A must have in my opinion.

Released in 1969, "English Rose" was Fleetwood Mac's second US release which features the highlights from their second UK release, "Mr. Wonderful", the 1969 UK compilation "Pious Bird Of Good Omen" along with several Danny Kirwan contributions otherwise unavailable on LP. Unfortunately this album is rather hard to find nowadays since it provides a much more natural transition between the blues-wailing nature of their 1968 debut album and the 1970 "progressive blues" stylings of "Then Play On." "English Rose" features a variety contributions from Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer instead of "Mr. Wonderful" which seemed to concentrate only on Spencer's ability to emulate the stylings Elmore James, often to the point of irritating repetition. "English Rose" also subsitutes the Eddie Boyd tracks from "Pious," with newer Kirwan penned tracks which flow a little better with the rest of the material on the album. If you can find this for a reasonable price (or find it at all) I would recommend this over both "Mr. Wonderful" or "Pious Bird Of Good Omen."

A perfect merge between Pontes and Morricone.......2005-06-11

This is one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Ennio Morricone had known Dulce Pontes for many years, but he refused to work with her saying that her voice wasn't ripe.
Now we can see why... Morricone is a genious and managed to get the best out of Dulce.
It is an album full of emotions, either by the greatness of Morricone's music, either by the feeling that Pontes managed to transmit with her voice.
My favorite song is called "Amor a Portugal". It's a portuguese version of the "Your love", included in the portuguese edition as an extra track (number 16). It could become the Portuguese National Anthem.
As for the comment of one other review comparing Dulce Pontes with Celine Dion, I tottaly can't agree with that. At all.
Dulce Pontes is only showing the maturity in her voice.
And she's great doing that...

I have listened in amazement to Pontes pushing the boundaries of fado and folk genres on her prior CDs with her unique delivery and fantastic voice. Here she leaves those boundaries behind and goes off into Celine Dion territory--show off all your technical ability and the entire extent of your range in every single song. Kind of exhausting. On the other hand, if you like fireworks in every song, this one's for you.

Beyond earthly realms.......2004-03-05

As cliched as it might sound, there are no words to describe either the talent of Dulce Pontes or the quality of this recording. This is one breathtaking singer, approximating the status of divinity on "FOCUS". For those lucky enough to understand the Portuguese lyrics, what a blessing; you may as well have discovered a new planet, a new world, particularly with regards to "Renascer" and "Voo". The inclusion of songs in English and Italian is a bonus.Dulce is so much more than a singer on this disc - she is life itself, in all its magical strains, in all its tortuous twists. Listen to "No Ano Que Vem" and you'll know what I'm talking about. No wonder that the album has done so brilliantly in Portugal and is now infiltrating countries such as Greece, Spain, Italy and Japan. Focus is a universal event, a celebration of that exquisite beauty which for so many of us remains a mere longing. Along Dulce's short career, this is the moment we've all waited for - now the world needs to discover it also. When I first heard this masterpiece, I felt that I was transcending, re-emerging, beginning to live all over again. Inevitably, Ennio Morricone must be mentioned - a great genius! The passion of his compositions remains unequalled - "A Rose Among Thorns" is testimony to the brilliance of both composer and singer. Through Dulce's miraculous imterpretation, Ennio Morricone's music must perforce become the new standard. I have been listening to the album for three days... and I feel like buying it again! Bravo, to two magical human beings perfectly poised on the wings of a wonder!

Too much talent!.......2004-02-29

This is an impressive album where Dulce Pontes turned cinematic themes from the Morricone repertoire into songs in English, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, and she is breathtaking in most of them. Dulce Pontes embellishes Morricone's compositions with an epic grandeur that few other singers could have achieved. Her voice is very potent and playful, subtle when necessary, blends gracefully with the music, and succeeds in recreating the absurdity, the nuances, and the overwhelming beauty of Morricone's eccentric musical temperament. My favorite songs are those in English, particularly "Your Love" (with music from Once Upon a Time in the West). Dulce's elegant venture into a Brazilian arrangement makes "Nosso Mar" another favorite of mine. Her best achievement, however, is probably "No Ano Que Vem", a song inspired by Jerusalem and set to the strangely upbeat music from the film Maddalena. Focus is a superb accomplishment in Dulce's career. In the end, one could not possibly deny her the classical stature of Ennio Morricone.

I listened this album over and over. I really loved all the songs, one of my favorites is "Cinema Paradiso", is absolutly beautiful. The voice of Dulce Pontes I think is one of the bigest voices. I really enjoyed this album, i hope you will enjoy this like me.

A reunion some fans,including myself never thought would happen.A one off show(was it?)that after nearly thirty years two early Ash Ra Tempel members,Manuel Gottsching and Klaus Schulz played a gig at the Royal Festival Hall in London,of all places.One track here,just one;lasting 69 minutes.The music progresses and it often settles.A decent effort,but personally,I liked their 'Friendship' effort better(see my review).Takes a little getting used to.

"Reunion" live.......2002-04-09

Invited by Julian Cope to play his "Cornucopea Festival", Manuel Gottsching recruited former Ash Ra Tempel member Klaus Schulze to join him. Third founding member Hartmt Enke opted not to participate, so the 2 old friends played together alone. "Gin Rose" is a 69 minute track, constanly evolving. Themes heard on "Reunion" pop up here and there, but as a whole this album struck me as more low key. As with the "Reunion" album, this sounds like what you would expect if you crossed late 90's Klaus Schulze with Manuel Gottsching. Reccomended.

Gin Rose.......2002-01-29

This is a great cd. After 30 years not playing together, Klaus Schulze and Manuel Gottsching play a sweet show at London's Royal Festival Hall. This is electronic music at its best, taking the talent of two of the biggest names in this musical genre.
The reason I like this release so much is that these two musicians have the highest talent in music improvisation. The 61 minutes of music on this cd are really well done.
A must have for any seasoned music collection or for the already Ash Ra fan.

Fantastic CD! The oboist with this group continues to astound with each of their releases. I don't personally care for the vocal portions added to LeTombeau, but I wonder what Ravel might have thought? The 2 new members of the quartet really seem to pull their weight (and I really liked the former members!) The new accordionist just dazzles. This CD has something to offer for lovers of all musical flavors.

He was my teacher and I had no idea..........2004-05-22

Bernard Peiffer was my teacher when I was a kid in the late 60's-early 70's. Oddly enough, I never heard him play jazz. He was my Harpsichord teacher and he taught me classical only! I knew he was a jazz musician and that he had some sort of fame in France but I had no idea just how talented he was. It wasn't until last year that I began seeing his Albums being re-released on CD. I picked this one up first and I was absolutely blown away. Naturally, I'm biased because I knew him. But, even with that aside, I highly recommend this CD if you want to hear a real master of the piano. Amazing style and technique. ( "Technique!" is what he used to always shout at me when I messed up) Lightning fast runs, syncopated rhythms and probably the coolest version of Jingle Bells you will ever hear. Don't miss discovering this little known powerhouse.

Romantic Paradise.......2004-06-10

Andre Rieu's Romantic Paradise with selections including "The Godfather," "Strangers in Paradise,"The Rose," etc. is absolutely lovely. His violin brings out the best in these familiar songs. There is a second CD with the same title, with "Dances with Wolves" as the first selection, that will blow you away. I got mine in Europe. Hope it becomes available in the USA.

This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!

Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.

That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)

The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.

I bought this cd single for the full 12" mix of the Victor Calderone remix for "Desert Rose". The American cd single didn't feature it so I bought the import. The tracks are as following:Desert Rose Radio Mix(3:54),Melodic Club Mix(9:20)and the Melodic Radio mix(4:44) plus Brand New Day (Murlyn Mix-5:01). The Victor Calderone mix fuses House music with Middle eastern type music very well. Was a top five club play track in 2000 and spent 9 weeks atop the Sales Dance Chart.Great song.

I like the song "Desert Rose" alot. I think it has a good mixture of Arabic words and English too. This song deserves a full five star!

Without question Victor Calderone's remix (The Melodic Club Mix) is one of his best remixes ever. The song keeps building with Arabic chants until the vocals begin. Buy the import because it has the 9 minute version of the Melodic Club Mix. The domestic (for some unknown reason) is cut down in length drastically. As for Sting's vocals - they're excellent as usual. Five stars for this import cd single!

I can not say enough about this CD. Sting's voice is hauntingly beautiful in Desert Rose and uplifting and energetic in Brand New Day. The contrast that these two songs present flatter each other and make the CD a perfect choice for a candle dinner for two or road music for the highway. All in all a great buy and choice for anyone.
