5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection Of Their Post-Motown Years.......2004-01-30

Gladys Knight & The Pips have been one of the most durable groups of all-time. During their Motown/Soul years, they racked up lots of hits, but always seemed to be overshadowed by the likes of The Temptations and The Supremes.

However, this collection during their latter years is just as exceptional as their earlier material. While critics will view their time era (1973-1988) as an "uneven" or "scattered hits from several record labels", this song list should not be taken lightly. "Midnight Train To Georgia", "On And On", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", and "Save The Overtime For Me" are R & B classics.

The packaging is superb: exhaustive, enjoyable liner notes with a few pictures during the time period. They looked very happy in the pictures. This collection works for both the casual fan (who would only want the pop and R & B hits) and for the serious fan (who would have a hard time trying to find their albums on CD). Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Where Peaceful Waters Flow.......2001-12-11

This song "Where Peaceful Waters Flow" always make me cry with tears of JOY. Gladys Knight is the Singer of singers. And this CD is the Best of Gladys & The Pips of course. I suggest if you're a fan This is THE CD to Buy.

4 out of 5 stars First-rate Song Selection.......2000-01-13

This CD is only the best of the best from the latter half of Gladys & The Pips's career. As it was said when the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, they never let the sound of the times pass them by. Aside from the well-known big hits, casual fans might not be familiar with Van McCoy's disco-era Baby, Don't Change Your Mind. The tune is well-crafted and in a style you don't often hear from Gladys. I just wish they'd omitted Lovin' On Next To Nothing in favor of I Will Fight.

earth volume 4! check out bukems "earth volume 4" here on amazon.com.

the songs are obviously different but the track listings, titles, producers, and order of songs on both double cd's are exactly the same. what the heck is that all about?

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful drum 'n bass.......2002-02-16

It looks like the Bukem "Progression" discs, and it sounds like it too, but in this compilation Tayla doesn't fall in the jazz moods that seems to have conquered the Bukem label: it is pure classical Good Looking Records' drum'n bass. Very beautiful dnb indeed, but not sounding very different from 5 years before (maybe the drums are a little more aggresive, but no more). It is unmissable if you are fan of that sound, and forgettable if you really think that this sound is death because it has stucked in the same formula... The first CD is mixed, and in the second you can find separate tracks. Most of the first cd tracks are from "Future engineers", which seem to be really good. But as I said before... more of the same. Just interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Drums as a melody instrument.......2007-01-16

The career of Max Roach has been one of change. In the 1940s he established the role of drums in the bebop era. In the 50s he established the role of the drums in hard bop or progressive jazz. In the 60s he did the same for free bop and also developed the drums in polyrhythmic contexts. He also demonstrated excellent skills as a composer.
In the 80s he experimented with free jazz and with extended compositional forms.
On this record the 20 minute long piece that was composed for him can be looked at as a Bartokian string quartet with drums as the solo instrument. This recording in no way should be confused with the kinds of things Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown did with strings--both of which have Max on drums.
This is Max in the 80s continuing to experiment.

The remaining part the record features some of Max's best drum compositions, showing that Max is not only a great composer but that his understanding of the drums in unparalleled. In his hands the drums are not only a rhythm instrument but a harmonic and melodic instrument as well.

For fun pick his daughter's string quartet record Max Roach Presents The Uptown String Quartet where he and daughter Maxine orchestrated one of those drum solos.

3 out of 5 stars 20-min. Title Piece Awful, But Album Redeemed by Solo Work.......2001-01-15

When I purchased this CD I was under the impression that the album was Max with a string section on each of the tracks. Looking back, each source I consulted (Penguin Jazz Guide, various internet sites) never really said this, but I wish I had known that the CD has only one track with Max and the strings. It is track #1, 'Survivors', and it runs over 20 minutes. It is awful. Expecting a song with Max swinging along with strings, I was annoyed to find that it is Max free-form soloing with the strings accenting at seemingly random points. Now I'm a fan of free jazz, but I still couldn't get into this (a caveat: I must admit I wasn't able to get past the first 10 minutes, but I've tried on several occasions).

So why 3 stars? Because the remaining tracks are examples one of Max's great contributions to jazz, the solo drum composition. Anyone familiar with Max's 'Conversation', 'The Drum Also Waltzes', or 'For Big Sid' will know that his drum compositions are distinct from drum solos, which are often a series of showy technical exercises. His compositions have a (basic) melody, sections, and include some tasty technical and polyrhythmic stuff. I like these immensely, and the ones included here make for some fascinating listening. Except for the last one, these solos are between 2 and 3 minutes, a display of rare taste. Drummers will dig them most of all.

So let's be clear, jazz fan: The first track (awful, 20 min.)is Max with strings, and all of the rest are Max on the drums only (not to all tastes). No other musicians. Do not expect a bebop album here.
