Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!
Stellar cast in a first rate musical.......2006-01-29
A sparkling Broadway lead debut from Sutton Foster (run, don't walk to any live performances given by Ms. Sutton) with superb comedic support given by Mark Kudisch and Harriet Harris (who won the Tony Award for this performance)

Customer Reviews:
Good songs, bad marketing, and not the best of Joe Nichols.......2005-08-07
Every artist has to start somewhere but it's too bad Joe had to start here. This Cd was obviously poorly marketed since I didn't even know it exsisted until a few days ago. After ordering my copy, I have listened to it many times and while there is potential here, it is nowhere near "Man with a Memory" or "Revelation". Joe seems to have vocal problems on some of the songs and seems to mimick other artists style such as Garth Brooks. While this is expected, it does take away from the quality of the album.
On the bright side, there are a lot of songs that any country fan can enjoy and they all seem to fit Joe perfectly. "Old Cheyenne", "Leave the Past Behind", "In Spite of Myself" and "To Tell you the Truth,I lied are superior songs that match the superiority of Joe's love songs on his newer albums. If the vocals were stronger, these songs would easily give this album five out of five.
Like any album, there are plenty of filler tracks here such as, "Independent Girl", and "Wal-Mart Parking Lot" Suprisingly, Six of One, Half Dozen of the other belongs in the filler category as well. I still can't see what Joe is talking about in this song. For an ubeat part of the album, he could've chosen a better song.
Though the album was poorly marketed, it does have some good love songs that country fans should enjoy. However, if a fan expects the Joe of today, then wait for his next release because you won't find it here.
To Tell You the Truth, I lied...this album deserves 6 stars.......2002-09-03
I first heard Joe's single "The Impossible" and since it hadn't come out on CD yet I had to at least get my hands on his older work. Over all his debut and self titled ablum (which now has been renamed Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other) has a uniquely different sound then "Man with a Memory." Joe's voice was still in its developemental stage, but even then held its clear strong sound. Not quite as well rounded as his newer work, Six of One... does beat "Man with a Memory" in its solid acid country base. If your at all a fan of Nichol's, Six of One...is a good place to start in understanding his roots. Check it out, you won't be disappointed...then go check out "Man with a Memory." It just keeps getting better!

Album Description
In the process of gathering tracks for a greatest hits compilation, it was realized that this 15-year-and-running UK band also had an abundance of B-sides, unreleased material, and rare bonus album tracks. So this double CD package is the best of both those worlds put together with a booklet of stories and photos from the band's history.
Customer Reviews:
This is the CD you need to buy........2007-04-07
Contains almost all of their classic tunes including the classic "I think were alone now" If you think of the amount of American punk bands who made it big time, fame and fortune and all (Green Day a prime example) and the amount of great British punk bands who were around at the time who have largely gone unnoticed it realy is a shame.
Snuff were a great band but probably suffered from producing a little too much in the way of music, this CD contains pretty much all you need to know. Some of their great songs such as 'not listening' with a bunch of their classic covers (like the great cover of the Specials 'do nothing') feature here.
a Greatest Hits for a band that never got its due.......2005-10-05
it seems totally bizarre that a 2-disc (not just 1 disc) Best Of has been released for Snuff. it blows my mind in a way. here's a band that had so many great songs, so many tracks that could have been smash singles, so much quality, yet you'd be hard-pressed to find some "punks" that cared. Snuff were milling the pop-punk vein in the early/mid 90's when such well-produced material was in its heyday, but they never really got much attention beyond the odd standout comp track or passing reference to other bands. though i honestly can't think of 1 band over the years that i would compare Snuff to. the vocals are reminiscent of Leatherface, the music of the best pop-punk bands of their day, and the melody/harmonies/hooks that only the rare band like The Clash of Bad Religion ever managed to pull off time & again. as for the tracklisting, it meets standards. one might wonder why only 1 track from Disposable Income (because it isn't on Fat, hmmm?) but otherwise pretty representative. the 2nd disc is fine, but Snuff has a million b-sides (honestly, just ask them) and most of them are that way for a reason. i can't say a 5-star rating means i would rank it with London Calling as greatest album ever made, but it is really 5-stars as a great collection of a great band. i mean, even their one-off side project was a great lost gem of 90's pop-punk (Guns N' Wankers). maybe someday the world will catch up. probably not.
The ULTIMATE 2-disc set, Snuff rules!.......2005-04-07
The first CD is all their best stuff, and Snuff is one of the most amazing yet under-appreciated bands in all of punk rock, so their best stuff is really something. Snuff Said was great, Demma was awesome, Tweet Tweet was amazing, and all those tunes are here along with the best tracks from their other albums that aren't totally essential but still have some killer tunes. Snuff blows everyone away, newer punkers should check them out. As for the 2nd disc, it's made up of really rare stuff so hardcore Snuff fans will have something to look forward to as well I think. I sure did.

great for beginners.......2000-03-01
This is the album that got me hooked on Marillion. I highly recomend it to anyone with a need for something formilliar yet different. Great for anyone on a budget who wants to expand there musical taste.
Contains Good Songwriting And Musicianship........1999-09-19
I just recently bought this greatest hit's package and can say that I'm quite impressed. Strange enough, through the years I don't ever remember hearing any of these songs. I'd always heard of Marillion and the singer named Fish, but that was as far as it went. There's no doubt that these guys are very talented musicians. They're in the same vein as bands like Genesis and Alan Parson's Project. I really can't distinguish between the two different singers on this album, but the singing (whoever is singing) is all pretty good. Of all the songs, "Dry Land" would have to be my favorite--it's just one of the best songs I've heard in a long time--very well played and moving. I like the fact that Marillion infuses a nice progressive touch to a lot of the tunes on here--listenable but also challenging. The guitar and keyboard playing is also exceptional. Other good songs are "Kayleigh," "Assassing," and "Easter." This is a good introduction to this talented band and I'll probably get somemore of their stuff. I'm glad I bought this--give it a listen, it's a cut above the rest and is not disappointing.
Good introduction to this outstanding innovative band.......1998-11-04
Marillion have been a long time favorite band of mine - so this review will be biased. This album is good for those who want to sample some of Marillion's best tunes. If you like rich, challenging melodies contrasted against a backdrop of variations then this album is worth buying. If you like this - try "Misplaced Childhood", "Brave" and the latest release "Radiation" . "This Strange Engine", "Seasons End" and "Fugazzi" are all 4 star efforts. If you like Marillion, other suggested listening: - Simple Minds ("Real Life", Sparkle in the rain") - Yes ("Fragile", "Close to the Edge") - Styx ("Paradise Theater") - Peter Gabriel ("So") - Genisis (earlier material) - Alan Parsons ("Tales of Mystery and Imagination", "Eye in the sky", "Stereotomy")
A great sampling from a great band - spans a decade!.......1998-09-24
This is an interesting collection, as half of the songs have original vocalist/lyricist Fish and half have "new" vocalist Steve Hogarth. Fish split the band in 1988, and the differences in song structure and lyrical direction are obvious - though neither is superior. Marillion is an album band, and taking songs out of context with the time and space of the album isolates them - but they still stand on their own. US Prog fans will know the song Kayleigh - but little else. To go from the prog bombast of Assassing to the pure power pop of Hooks in You provides the listener with a wild, challenging trip. If you want to sample this great band, I recommend this collection. I think you'll find that you'll want to get the albums. I recommend "Clutching at Straws" from the Fish era and "This Strange Engine" and "Brave" from the current era.

Customer Reviews:
Good songs but the vocals?.......2001-12-17
I found the musicians on the recording to be quite good and the lyrics to the songs are extremely funny. However, the singer seems someone more accustomed to opera or madrigals then to bawdy songs. She is a wonderful singer, but seems ill-suited to this type of music. I find the combination of her voice with these lyrics to be un unpleasant one. I am unable to listen to more the 2 or 3 songs at a time unless I am putting it on as purely background music and ignore the lyrics completely, and since the purpose of a CD of "bawdy" songs is usually the humorous lyrics, I found this recording to be a bit of a waste.
music to smirk and smile by.......2001-06-05
This disc of bawdy songs of Thomas D'Urfey is truly charming and thought provoking. Soprano Rosa Lamoreaux creates unique characters for each piece, one a frightened inexperienced young girl, another a dejected lady upset her man would rather go to war than bed her. In the title track she portrays a woman proud to have maintained her virginity, while other women have sacrificed theirs. The instrumental tracks display the virtuosity of the rest of the ensemble - Tina Chancey, Scott Reiss and Grant Herried - in fun, expansive and sometimes explosive dances and suites. Highly recommended to lovers of all sorts of music, not just classical.

Customer Reviews:
AAAAAAAAAAUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHEHHEHHEHHEHYAHYAHYAHYAH!!!!.......2003-12-19
i bought this initially on cassette in austin while picking up furniture for a friend. on the way home, she decided to take a nap, so, needing to pass a couple of hours & being fairly sleepy myself, i needed a little music to keep me going. i unwrapped the cassette, popped it in, & sat back as the leader tape rolled. what followed was the sound best described in the title for this review: no music, just alan vega heavily echoed YELLING AT ME. snapping it off instantly, i listened to pleased to meet me instead, because, come on, shut up, guy! only after i got home & played the rest of the tape was this music redeemed because this RULES! half alive is apt: there's a lot of early demos which are fuller & more cluttered than what shows up on suidide's first 2 albums. essentially some simple heavily chorused synth lines and reverbed vega vocals repeating the title of the song over & over again. (by the way, this isnt placing judgement or denigrating the tunes, merely describing them). the live stuff is much more raw & sloppy, back when audiences quite disliked what they were having to listen to. alan vega is totally in his element therefore; harlem 2, sister ray says, & going to las vegas are all delightfully manic & unhinged, & all night long (which is really just dance with a different title) has alan really frustrated that he's pleading with someone to dance all night long with him, but it clearly isnt happening. to sum up: not for beginners, but man oh man if you loved the first couple albums, you will LOSE IT to hear this. epilogue: the aforementioned cassette that started this review eventually got eaten by my car's tape player, but before breaking, it would fitfully struggle through the tape heads, resulting in a stop & start painfully slow marching gruel of keyboard grunts & deep drawn out screams. almost as good as the real thing, i tells ya.
The greatest Suicide live CD with Zero Hour.......2002-05-04
The Suicide lives are so different than the albums and so great by themselves that I wonder why they don't put out more of them in CD. In this one, Harlem 2, Johnny Dance, Sister Ray Says, the 2nd All Night Long and, above all, Sweetheart are masterpieces. By the way, it would be the least for the greatest band ever to put out more live CDs.
When are we gonna see a few other ones issued, from the 70s, 80s, 90s...??!
Sacul Repooc.......2000-06-28
Suicide are as close to the real thing as it gets. I LOVE THIS CD. It makes all other electronic punk outfits look like B-movies. Marty Rev and Alan Vega invented a unique new genre and defined the parameters to which it could be extended. Every electronic band exists because of these joined-at-the-hip downtown NYC punk-rock scavangers. The ROIR cassette was great...the Cd even better with 3 bonus tracks from the same era and the original classic liner notes by Lester Bangs you can't go wrong.

Customer Reviews:
Diverse Collection of Gratifying Sounds.......2002-11-14
What a gathering together of sounds including oboe, english horn, flute, piano, percussion, harp, bass, and synthesizer.
Even frogs, crickets, coyotes grace this CD, making it a calming and excellent listening piece.
All focused around the well played DR's of Caplan.
Especially enjoyed the William Gtrant Still miniatures and the Ysef Lateef blues number.
LIke in heaven.......2001-07-16
Steve Caplan and his oboe do great things for ones' ear. It is the talent of Dr. Caplan that makes this CD work. The entire music is based upon oboes having a "conversation" with different animals in the forest. It is great for relaxation. Go out and buy it.....
Dr. Caplan is a professor at the music department of the UNLV. He is also part of the Las Vegas Philharmonics. He is an accomplished musician.....
A Tree In Your Ear.......2000-10-04
This is a "must-have" for music lovers - especially those who enjoy the beautiful tones of the oboe and english horn. This CD is a diverse mix of styles that presents newer (but very accessible!) composers as well as those that are more established (William Grant Still and Alan Hovhaness, not to mention the "Saltwater Blues" by jazz great Yusef Lateef...) all brilliantly performed by Stephen Caplan who has a list of credentials and awards too long to list. Satisfaction guaranteed!
