In the tumultuous years following his ‘99 sophomore jewel Word of Mouth Parade, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Gus Black became variously label-less, a cult hero (having Parade's "The Road Between" covered on Lisa Marie Presley's high profile debut), a father, and, on the evidence of this mature, introspective album, an infinitely more complicated human being. His heart-on-the-sleeve emotionalism and '70s-leaning penchant for pop hooks remain as strong as ever, but they're now focused in service of songs as cautious and brooding as his previous chapters were wistfully effusive. Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri

Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"

Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

With the cd I do not need to see someone's selection of wild animal pics. What I do need is a convenient copy of the lyrics of the songs. Doesn't the band care even THAT much about the words? Shame!

"Admire" will get under your skin, if you let it........2007-07-13

When Interpol first hit the scene in 2002 with 'Turn On the Bright Lights, their detractors accused them of imitating certain despair-rock bands of the 80s and of not creating anything new. I was one of them. It took five listens to TOtBL, over the course of several months (not sure why I kept coming back to it, maybe something in my subconcious) for the CD to grab me. I found that, while they showed their love and reverence to their source material, they'd managed to create something fresh and new. The stark, driven tracks of that disc never me let go. Neither did this band.

`Antics', proved to be more of a commercial album, to my ears. Again, I was a little disappointed at first listen. I didn't want my favourite new band to have been sullied by the luke warm reception to their first album, or make any attempts to please the masses. For a while I refused to even listen to 'Slow Hands', tagging it as an indie radio rock anthem, but I eventually gave in. The songs were just too dang catchy to ignore, and yet they retained that flavour of discontent that I'd come to love. My biggest complaint was the length between 'Antics' and 'Admire'.

`Our Love To Admire' is a continuation of their vision and takes great, though subtle, leaps forward. Rather than taking a musical detour, the boys come forward with more power and confdence; tighter as a unit as ever before. Sonically, they go beyond the boundaries of the previous two disks in ways that are not apparent after one or two listens. In fact, like 'Turn...', I was disappointed after listening to 'Admire' the first couple of times. But I know my Interpol, and so I put the disk on repeat.

Opening with `Pioneer To The Falls' sets the tone for `Our Love To Admire' as a journey of singular purpose. `The Heinrich Maneuver' hints at the force of nature apparent on the appropriately titled 'Mammoth' and 'Who Do you Think' (an obvious choice for the 2nd single). Pace is indeed the trick with this new effort. If you let it, 'Our Love To Admire' will get your "soul all fired up".

They may have risen in popularity on the coat-tails of the so-called Indie Rock Revolution, but they've left their peers in the dust. Yes, Interpol borrows heavily from the past. But rather than languishing there, they drag those sonic undertones kicking and screaming into the present and deliver yet another listening experience that is quite admirable. 4.5 stars!

Thumbs Down to "Admire".......2007-07-13

I was eagerly anticipating this album's release, but upon purchasing it the first day it came out, I have been thoroughly disappointed with this album. Contrary to what others are writing, I think it sounds very little like their first two records.

While the bass lines might be there and the pulsating voice of the lead singer are still in effect, there is something missing on each of these tracks on this record.

In the past, there has been slow-building energy within each song but that seems to be missing this time around. Not to say the album is pop-rock now, because that is not the case, the album does seem to pander more toward the commercial rock radio stations.

I miss the old Interpol. I was hoping for more of "Antics" and/or" "Turn On the Bright Lights," but instead I am left with a record that sounds as though a band is simply going through the motions with NO emotion, passion or intensity in its music. Frankly, the record is garbage.

Admirable, certainly.......2007-07-13

Well, it isn't Turn on the Bright Lights. And it isn't Antics either. I really can't compare the three. Bright Lights was dark and darker, Antics wasn't as dark but added more blatant obtuseness to the proceedings. This one seems more...straightforward...to me. It just seems more obvious to me.

Track-by-track:
1. Pioneer to the Falls- As usual, a rousing opener that builds and builds and builds.
2. No I in Threesome- Not as cringe-worthy as expected, a peppy love song about hoping to find a new spark in an established relationship. Piano plays a big part in this, though doesn't overpower. May be the song with the biggest Carlos D presence (more solid bass).
3. The Scale- This one comes off as a little bland- first of two tracks that utilize backtracking
4. The Heinrich Maneuver- The first single, I have to say it is really quite good. Catchy and sounds great on the album (in the live recording from their early, shows it doesn't come off as solid). First of two tracks that pull a "Say Hello to the Angels" of cutting out.........and then coming back in again (maybe getting a bit cliched?).
5. Mammoth- Another that I'd heard from live recordings, and, again, it sounds really good on the album. Big, loud guitars, it almost starts out like Not Even Jail, but once the song gets going, it isn't really close to NEJ. Maybe it is cliched, but when the guitars cut out for the deafeningly quiet bridge and the piano shows up again, it is truly a great moment. This is going to be a highlight of their live shows.
6. Pace is the Trick- A nice, quieter song after the ruckus of Mammoth. I can hear touches of Take you on a Cruise in it at times.
7. All Fired Up- Decent track, but it just seems a little disjointed....
8. Rest My Chemistry- I REALLY like this song. It has a very bluesy feel to it that just is a lot of fun to me.
9. Who do you think- Maybe a bit of a clunky intro, but a typical Interpol mid-to-fast tempo rocker with a lot of bounce to it, similar to C'mere.
10. Wrecking ball- A nice penultimate track, this will be a big one live as well. More backtracking on this, and even.....an orchestra?
11. Lighthouse- I guess I'm not seeing this one yet. Takes a while to get going. I haven't grasped this one yet...I'm trying to think of what this one reminds me of...OH! I don't know if you've ever listened to them, but it sounds very much like The Walkmen for a while before coming back to 'Pol at the end.

Some comments-
-Paul sounds great on vocals. I don't know what it is- he just sounds....more true?
-Daniel on lead guitar really works hard on this one. His guitar work is really impressive.
-Sam on drums is spot on as usual.
-Carlos doesn't seem to be as prominent in this. Maybe he's just not coming through to me yet. But it sounds like he's just not as big a part of this album.

This is a pretty good album. I am liking it more and more the more I listen to it. It is certainly an album that you have to just forget all expectations and focus on this album. Forget about the past albums. Just don't even compare them, or even try. Just....don't. I'm not saying that because it pales in comparison to the earlier albums, it is just that if you go in expecting PDA or Obstacle 1, you aren't going to get it. You aren't going to get another Not Even Jail. But that isn't a bad thing. Or, at least, it doesn't have to be.

I have to admit that this year's albums by the wunderkind of the indie music world have been a bit disheartening. Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Killers- while they are fine albums, they just don't have that FIRE that their earlier albums had. Bloc Party's Silent Alarm has such a solid bass section, not to mention the political edge, that Weekend in the City just doesn't have. Arcade Fire is good, it just has lost a little bit of the spark and playfulness that Funeral has (even if that sounds like an oxymoron). Heck, I've got the latest Editors album already, and while it is fine, it is missing the urgency that Back Room had.

Interpol is NOT like that, however. The soul is there, even if it isn't quite in the same place that everyone would expect it. But it is there!

Thank goodness for that!

An exciting disapointment or, the second Antics Remix CD.......2007-07-13

This is the first albumn in over a year that I bought on the first day. I was very excited having heard the "Heinrich Manuever" already, even though it sounded like "Slow Hands." When I gave the new albumn a listen I was disapointed. The songs for the most part are slow tempoed drones. The bass and drums, the higlights of "Antics," are pushed to the background. Almost all of the riffs and hooks are lifted from previous Interpol songs, listen to the first 5 seconds of "No I in Threesome" and tell me you don't expect to hear "Not Even Jail". I bought Of Montreals latest albumn last week and have already abandoned "Our love to Admire" to listen to "Heimdalsgate and the Pomethian Curse" on constant repeat.

Sometimes the Memory is Better than the Reality.......2007-07-12

What a disappointment! I adored this record when it came out; it was so different than most then current pop music, calling upon traditions which we scarcely new of at the time. So while highly innovative pop music FOR IT'S TIME, I've since gone on to hear the real older music from which Pepper drew; after listening to Fletcher Henderson my standard for being impressed by innovation has risen considerably. Worse though, the HORRIBLE sound quality deemphsizes all the interesting effects George Martin got. Some of these same tunes are on the Yellow Submarine DVD; they sound fine there so maybe my memory isn't that bad. I'll bet the vinyl version is/was better.

The Genius of the Beatles.......2007-07-02

I can't decribe how much I love this album. I strongly believe that this is the groups best album and the best album that's ever been released. It's meant to be a studio album and not played live cause the guys were just so sick of touring, and it just was the only way with this new direction they were going in.

Paul came up with the concept after hearing about Elvis' Car went "On Tour." He thought that Sgt.Pepper would be an interesting concept to have these alter egos, so the music "wouldn't be songs that they necessarily wrote, but Sgt.Pepper did." The opening track "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and " the Reprise are really the only songs that directly match up with the concept, but the songs inbetween are just as close to perfect as one could get them to be.

With a little help from my Friends is great, but I personally like Joe Cocker's version better (the one from the Wonder Years.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was written after a drawing Julian lennon did and commonly thought of to be a drug song. It's one of my favorite Lennon songs. I love the intro with Paul's Bass, it's so simple but it just hits my ear drums the right way.

Getting Better is about the time when John was really falling for Yoko.
I love George's guitar in Fixing a Hole. It sounds a lot like (Ticket to Ride)

She's Leaving Home is a sad song that's got McCartney written all over it.
The following track has that weird surreal circus sound that's very fitting for the album. George Martin was great at helping the group come up with new sounds.

Within You Without You often goes unnoticed i think. It's a great song by George, that I think is great, the sound, the lyrics, etc.

Lovely Rita and When I'm Sixty four are nice little tunes but not very fitting i don't think, I would have liked to have seen Strawberry Fields be on this album cause it was the first track recorded during the sessions and because it's a great lennon song.

I like the randomness of Good Morning Good Morning. The title comes from a Corn Flakes commerical that John overheard when he was writting one day.

A Day in the Life is right after the reprise. I love how John and Pau tied in their separate parts with a great orchestral crescendo. Everything just goes together and it just works.

Definitely pick this album up if you haven't or download it or check it out at your library cause it's a must have for any music fan or art fan cause this is such an important album in music history and it changed music forever, no joke.

Takes me back to my youth. My kid loves it and doesn't believe I know all the songs and the order they are in on the CD.

It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost." There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature. --Thom Allott

Beatles in a higher dimension.......2007-07-10

I was 15 years old when the Beatles hit. I have been a super fan from the start.

These tracks are superior in their quality and you can hear the harmonies better in both the vocals and instrumentation.

In many tracks the music is interwoven with music from other Beatles songs, making them..in my opinion..better. George Martin should definetly go into the vault and do more of the same. I am hearing things I have never heard before. Strawberryfields was terrific. This CD is a must have.

George Martin, the man who made The Beatles awesome, has done it again. He has just made me a renewed Beatles fan.

LOVE, a 2006 compilation of remixes, is the only remix album which I think has deserved my full $15.00. It is, like the 1 compilation, a compilation of almost 30 of their coolest tracks. It has a few beats changed, and a few classic songs mashed together to make them how they would've been.

Don't let the title LOVE fool you- LOVE is 26 tracks long, and dosen't have 26 love songs on it. It's 26 tracks of pure awesomeness.

Let me make a few notes about a few of the the tracks on this album:

-The biggest single is the Tomorrow Never Knows/ Within You Without You.
-Some of the songs on here are alternated. For example, in "I am the Walrus", the drums are different.
-All of the songs lead into each other, as if the entire album is one looong song.
-Did I mention this only has the best tracks on it?

So forget the 1 compilation. This complation will BLOW YOU AWAY. It will also renew old fans and get them back to their Beatles listening habits, like it has done to me.

And also if you want the real deal, I reccomend you get Love (CD + Audio DVD). It's a DVD and a CD, and the CD has the entire album in a 5.1 mix.

So buy this today!

The sound on this CD is incredibly clear and rich. It's like having the group in your living room. Unbelievable, and the nuances are great from George and Giles Martin.

What a gem of a compilation of Beatle tunes arranged for the unique production of Cirque du Soleil, also of the same title, LOVE! I bought it without even listening to a track from the CD. I knew I was going to LOVE it!

I first heard this song by IZ "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the end of the movie "Fifty First Dates" and I liked it. Then I heard it over the intercom at work. At that time, I did not know who sang it but I liked it so much I searched the net and found it here on Amazon. I love the music and the way he put the 2 songs together, it's very soothing and Israel had a wonderful voice. This is one of those tunes that stays in my head forever. I love the cd even if I only listen to that one song. Sometimes my 6 year old granddaughter asks me to hear my "Rainbow Song"!

This CD starts on a good note with Movin' On and ends nicely with Donnie Hathaway's A Song For You. Elliot co-wrote Movin' On, Find A Way, You Are The One, Train Wreck and Alright. And this is just his debut!

It's tempting to read these songs--many about hope in the face of potential heartbreak--as an adjunct to Keith Urban's own tabloid-fodder life, which lately reads "ex-junkie country star marries Nicole Kidman, enters rehab." But his three previous albums have similar dark undertones. That would also be an underestimation of Urban's creative powers, which are broad enough to balance assembly-line Nashville pop with emotionally fine-tuned artistry. Breezy rockers like "Faster Car," sweet hooky ballads like "Shine," and readymade big-chorus hits like "Once in a Lifetime" rub elbows with more complex numbers like "I Can't Stop Loving You"--an essay about sad courage that starts with an acoustic guitar and adds instrumental textures as it unfolds--and "Stupid Boy," a tale of loss and self-discovery. It's no coincidence that both those songs climax with Urban's own crying guitar solos. As a player, his bold, midrange-heavy tone complements his most nuanced vocal performances. Another highlight is "Raise the Barn," which Urban co-wrote and sings with Ronnie Dunn. The cheerful tune, inspired by the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, is a tribute to the durability of the human spirit--a subject Urban seems to know more than a little about. --Ted Drozdowski

I love Keith Urban, but this is the first album I've purchased of his. I love "Stupid Boy" along with a number of others, however some of the songs just didn't really do much for me. I was just a tad disappointed. It was a good album but not a great one.

Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy thing is a great album. There are love songs filled with the emotions that I can relate too. There are sad songs and there are silly songs. Its is a true compilation of the emotions that we all feel every day put to great tunes. I personally feel that Keith's poetry is beautiful. He is the whole package. The passion that he feels for life and his music come thru loud and clear. Love his look, love his voice, love his talent. Can't go wrong with this album whether you are a country music lover or rocker.......its all here. Rock on Keith and keep sharing your love, pain and crazy things :)

Now I'm a hardscrabble, no holds barred, put up or shut up kind of dude. So, I didn't think these poignant ballads and mid-tempo rockers would agree with my aggressive and in-your-face attitude. Boy was I wrong!

By the end of this CD, I was just twirling round the room thinking about how my life would have been different, if I hadn't been too proud to take that drama class I wanted to. So yes, there is some regret. I think I could have been a powerful performer along the lines of Rob Lowe in St. Elmo's Fire or Freddy Prinze Jr. in the ABC smash hit sitcom, "Freddie."

Not sure why a film star of Prinze's magnitude would take a sitcom role, but what do I know. I'm just a rough cat from the badlands of Brentwood.

Anyway, I want to thank Mr. Urban for giving me the courage to see that my life has been a waste. It's time for me to take that drama class. Look out Mr. Lowe!

Covering songs made famous by Ella Fitzgerald is a daunting endeavor, since only Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan challenge her place as the premier female jazz vocalist in history. But the late Fitzgerald inspired and influenced a wide array of talented acolytes--from Natalie Cole to k.d. lang to Dianne Reeves--many of whom gather on this spirited, Phil Ramone-produced tribute to partially benefit the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. Cole, backed by an eager gaggle of call-and-response male worshippers, breathes fun new life into the swingy "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," while Chaka Khan, showcasing the breadth of her range, delivers a transporting rendition of the enchanting jazz blues "Lullaby of Birdland." (The two also team up for a delicious scat-fest on "Mr. Paganini.") If lang is equally transfixing on the ballad "Angel Eyes," it's newcomer Ledisi who steals the show with "Blues in the Night," her expansive soprano often mimicking a muted or full-tilt trumpet, one of Fitzgerald's hallmarks. Performances from Etta James and Nikki Yanofsky also rivet, even if Diana Krall and Hank Jones's "Dream a Little Dream of Me" comes across as a little too sleepy, and Gladys Knight is probably not the best singer for "Someone to Watch Over Me." The album surprises with a live duet ("You Are the Sunshine of My Life") between Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder, recorded at the 1977 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Although it seems tacked on, it doesn't grate nearly as much as Michael Bublé's "Too Close for Comfort," so slick it would put an eel to shame. Skip over that transgression, and turn to the antidote of Lizz Wright's sultry take on the melancholy "Reaching for the Moon," which plumbs emotional depths not even the ever-joyous Great Lady managed to attain. --Alanna Nash

My favorite part of this collection was Ella and Stevie Wonder singing "Sunshine of my Life." The blend of their voices was amazing. If it possibly could have been done, I'd love to have seen the video of this performance.

Of the tributes, Ledisi's "Blues in the Night" blew me away. Her vocalese imitation of a trumpet was one of the best impressions I have ever heard.

I also liked hearing Natalie Cole and Chaka Khan in duet on "If you can't sing it, you'll have to swing it." Etta James' alto was definitely refreshing on "Wait til you hear from me." She's the only woman on the CD with a voice in the lower registers and definitely different from the other vocalists.

Great CD, especially for someone new to trad jazz.......2007-06-27

This is the second CD I've purchased of music from Ella Fitzgerald's era. I have one CD of Dave Grusin pays Homage to Duke Ellington and I didn't like it at all. But this CD is great! It has a variety of vocalists who are tops in their field, mostly jazz but some rock (Linda Ronstadt and K.D. Laing). The orchestration and vocal stylings are all excellent with great variety. The selection of artists is about as good as good gets. Practically no one great was left out that I know of who sings in this genre. Buy it as a great introduction to this era.

Should Be A Grammy Winner In 2008!.......2007-06-11

'We All Love Ella' is a first rate tribute to the First Lady Of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. While I agree with the previous reviewer on many points, I'll try to focus on the project as a whole. Verve must be commended for asembling such a formidible list of singers & musicians on this CD, and you can't help but feel good while listening to the various interpretations, which are all top rate. The one track which caught my attention from the start was the LONG OVERDUE DUET between Natalie Cole & Chaka Khan! The two divas' voices blend SO WELL on '(If You Can't Sing It) You'll Have To Swing It (A.K.A. Mr.Paganini)', and I also love the arrangement of the song, which is long enough for Chaka & Natalie to sing & scat up a storm.

There are so many other highlights on 'We All Love Ella', BUT the failure to include songs by TWO prominent Ella disciples (Patti Austin & Dee Dee Bridgewater), was questionable (IMO). Both of these legendary singers recorded Ella tribute projects in the past ('Dear Ella' & 'For Ella' respectively!), and they could've shined on this new CD singing 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' & 'How High The Moon ?'. Both of these songs are Ella classics without question, but are absent on 'We All Love Ella'. Oh well, maybe Verve will cook up Volume 2 ?

All in all 'We Love Ella - Celebrating The First Lady Of Song' is a first rate tribute to an American Icon, and I applaud everyone involved for the great music...which is one of the finest 'tribute' projects in recent memory. I'd also like to thank Phil Ramone for NOT releasing a shabby collection of songs (most of those countless 'remake' CDs on Shanachie Records comes to mind!!). Obviously a lot of thought & time was invested in producing 'We All Love Ella', so I'd recommend it to jazz lovers everywhere.

With her vocal twang and timbre, Kelly Willis will never sound anything but country. Even so, she's long been adventurous in her choice of material, and her first release in five years is her most expansive to date, as collaborations with producer/guitarist Chuck Prophet and songwriter Jules Shear (who also provides backing vocals) bring a freshness to her signature style. Translated From Love gives nods to five decades of rock, pop and country with `60s girl group drum sounds one minute and strings-drenched C&W angst the next. Its 12 tracks are comprised of originals, intriguing and unexpected covers (including a vintage Vox organ-fueled take on Iggy Pop's "Success" and Adam Green's retro-cool "Teddy Boys") plus collaborations with Prophet, acclaimed singer-songwriter Jules Shear and Kelly's husband, ace country songwriter Bruce Robison.

Great stuff and Oh that Voice.......2007-07-11

Once again Kelly draws you in with her stunning vocals. She has mastered the ability to surround herself with extreme talent as well in writers and musicians. This CD is better than Easy but not quite as good as What I Deserve. My personal favorite is Don't Know Why and there are several very good tunes her. Maybe one or two duds but her duds are still better than the garbage Nashville puts out. She is a class act.

Alternative(?) Country.......2007-07-10

Kelly Willis will never see much air play, as long as she continues to be herself. Her Austin based sound gets categorized as alt.country, which actually means her style is more country than CMT allows. I have loved her music and have missed her these last few years.

This album explores an expanded vision of her style - straying from the barriers of "alt.country' without ever leaving herself or her roots behind.

If you don't know Kelly Willis and hope you might be getting more of Nashville samo samo, stay away. If country swing is your thing, you probably already know her. For you, this is a must have.

With Chuck Prophet at the helm, Kelly Willis delivers a recording that's worth the wait, and that is the equal of her superb and compelling live performances. One of 2007's best, by far.

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley
