Amazon.com essential recording

Dusty Springfield never claimed to be a soul singer, but Dusty in Memphis effects a unique and deeply moving synthesis of her brand of stylish pop and the Southern R&B of the late '60s. Her soft tones and hushed, confessional readings make for definitive versions of everything from "Son of a Preacher Man" (a later version by Aretha Franklin is good but less thrillingly sensual than this one) to Randy Newman's ballads "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" and "Just One Smile" to a swirling take on "The Windmills of Your Mind." The soul obscurity "Breakfast in Bed" even gives a knowing spin to a line from an earlier Springfield classic: "You don't have to say you love me." This expanded edition features vastly improved sound and a number of bonus tracks not on the earlier CD. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars just a little dusty.......2007-05-11

as a child, i grew up on 'a brand new me' so i knew who dusty springfield was. one day at the library, i saw this album and thought 'what the heck?' and gave it a try.

then i played it pretty much for the next two weeks! where there is a little restraint evident on 'brand new me', there is none of that on 'dusty in memphis'. the range of tunes, from carole king to movie tunes, is something to behold. and dusty handles each with that painstaking process of hers and turns each one in to its own little three-act play of love, devotion and heartache.

and then every time it was re-released, i would buy the newest release with more re-releases on it. and each one was better and better. the most recent is almost like two albums in one there is so much wonderful dustystuff on it. from 'cherished' to 'through the darkness', each one of these unreleased tunes is fun and one more example of what made dusty springfield one of the hippest, most soulful singers of her generation.

5 out of 5 stars Most underrated Album from Dusty.......2007-05-09

One of Dusty's best, even though it failed commercially, it was a critical hit! A must have.

5 out of 5 stars bigfan.......2007-03-27

A must for any Dusty fan, the re-mastering and packaging is first class. Grab yourself a copy, you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2007-01-15

Great, classic Dusty. I love her voice and this is a good example of what she can do. Son of a Preacher Man, better than Aretha (just, no offense meant for Ms. Franklin).

5 out of 5 stars How did I never buy this until recently.......2006-12-24

I always loved Dusty Springfield. Maybe it was her eye-liner. Maybe it was that blond helmet that she wore for hair. I'm sure her voice had something to do with it too, but after her first flurry of hit singles, I wrote her off. There was too much else to listen to--Bowie, Bolan, heroine inflected Marianne Faithful. Just recently I broke down and ordered this, probably because with the price, it guaranteed me free shipping from amazon. What a great cd! Some of it sounds a little dated (like some sitar solo in the middle of nowhere), but overall it's just pure Dusty. Her voice is like a good cup of tea: soothing and invigorating at the same time. You don't have to worry for the length of one very long cd. You just have to sit back and enjoy one of pop's greatest voices.

5 out of 5 stars Great Al Green Classic.......2007-02-08

This is one of the best of Al Greens' collection. I buy it, I play it until it's unplayable, and replace it. My cd collection can't be without it.

5 out of 5 stars 5 star album, 1 star mastering job.......2007-01-31

I agree with the other reviews -- this album is excellent and, for me, is Al at his best.

I wanted to add my two cents about this particular edition of it, though. I bought this when it came out just to hear the bonus tracks and was horrified at how horrible this cd sounded compared to the previous cd edition on the same label (The Right Stuff) as well as various other cds that contain some of the same hit tracks. The mastering engineer here definitely used too many of the tools at his disposal in an effort to enhance what was already on the master tapes. Unfortunately removing the analog tape hiss (not that it was excessive to begin with anyway) removed the sense of life from these recordings. And other processing REALLY screwed up some of these songs, causing the vocals to become an unfocused mess (I've heard that this is the result of an attempt to widen the stereo image). Do yourself a favor and seek out the previous cd on the same label (unfortunately no bonus tracks there) or an import version on the Demon label.

5 out of 5 stars Soul has never been better!.......2006-06-09

I agree, why aren't there more reviews of this album?

Al Green is quite possibly the most underrated artist ever, soul music or otherwise. Though some might disagree, most of this is due to the fact that the 70's was extremely competitve music-wise. Whlie The Reverend is remembered, he is not remembered as fondly as Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and Barry White. And that beloved is a shame.

Still in Love with You is a complete album. The type of album that you can play straight through, in order, time after time. Each songs flows into the next creating the sense of a man giving a melodic testimony concerning his innermost feelings about love, life, longing, pain, sadness melancholy and redemption. Not a wasted note, sound or breath is to be found on the entire album.

Of all of the instruments used in the making of this album, Al's voice is the greatest of them. It can be heard best on "Simply Beautiful". It is simple, controlled and seductive. He purposely teases with a falsetto that's as light as a feather yet as powerful as a tiger. All within his control at the same time. He sings as if he's whispering in his lady's ear - the moans at the end are potent enough to produce babies themselves.

You cannot be a music fan or collector of any kind without owning this album. Masterpiece is an understatement..this is what the soul afterlife must be like.

5 out of 5 stars this is his best.......2006-03-05

Al Green was the first great soul singer in the 70's. Plenty of releases until today; yet he failed to release a better album than this, with another one called "call me". These 2 albums stand apart from all the rest of his work.
This album definitely sets the standard of what we call today Smooth Soul.
If you are new to Al Green's work, this album next to "call me", are the ones. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Forever Al.......2005-08-21

Listining to this cd brought back fond memories of my early 20s in Detroit rivaling the Motown popularity when music was king,
Al Green is a timeless testamony of love and happiness.Yes Al we're still in love with your music.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis at his best! .......2007-06-20

Off the heals of his 1968 Comeback Special, the King hit a ton of home runs during his Memphis recording sessions. This album just has everything! Top 10 hits in "Suspicious Minds", "In The Ghetto" and "Don't Cry Daddy", along with the great "Kentucky Rain".

Every song is pretty much a winner in this bunch. I could write out several paragraphs on each one and its unique qualities and what Elvis brings to the table with his awesome vocals, but I think Amazon.com would write me a nasty e-mail saying I used up way too much space in the review column.

I'll just say that if you are an Elvis fan, or even a rock fan of any kind, this album is some of Elvis' best work of his career, and arguably his best work period. He was a man with something to prove, an image to revive, and he scored in every aspect with this set of songs!

5 out of 5 stars This Is What a Broken Heart Sounds Like.......2007-06-14

After spending years putting out lame movie soundtracks (singing songs like "Do the Clam" and "The Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce"), Elvis Presley's confidence as a performer was about as low as he could get. Getting out of the movie contracts, Elvis returned to the music studio with a desperate desire to retake his throne and remind everyone what made him the king of rock and roll.

The raw energy and pure determination we all saw in the Singer TV Special, or "The 1968 Comeback Special," is on full display on what is definitely one of his finest albums, FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS.

About ten or fifteen years ago, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the 100 greatest rock albums of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s (I don't take RS too seriously since Yoko Ono is usually one of the judges for these things), but this is album was the one of Elvis' to make the list. They even called his version of "Long Black Limousine" a "harrowing" take.

I don't think I've ever heard a more tortured voice who sounded like he had some much to prove than on these songs. The despondent wail of "Long Black Limousine" IS harrowing. Other songs, after nearly forty years, still can bring tears to the listener's eyes.

That to me has always been the lasting appeal of Elvis Presley: his voice could make the most painful agony sound so good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Remaster.......2007-02-16

I have the 1969 release as well as the newer one from BMG. The songs and performances from either release are all excellent. Sonically the newer release is clearly a much superior product.

5 out of 5 stars Best Elvis Album of All-Time.......2006-12-08

I first heard this album almost 20 years ago...I was in Grade Nine. I had bought the vinyl at a second hand record store - and dubbed it onto a cassette to listen to during a school trip. From the moment "Wearin' That Loved On Look" started, I knew this was not a typical Elvis album. It remains quite frankly the best Elvis album of all-time. The rich rawness of his voice, the vulnerability of his career at the time, the classic arrangements by Chips Moman, the brilliant Memphis sound - are clear with each track. I fell in love with this album and this era of his recording history. I even had a gold album specially made of this record to hang on my wall. Simply the best the King had to offer. Better than Sun, RCA, Hollywood and Vegas, "From Elvis in Memphis" is not only my top choice, it deserves to be one of the greatest achievements of the American songbook.

5 out of 5 stars His return to making REAL music!.......2006-09-09

After years of recording mediocre soundtracks, this was Elvis' long-overdue return to making real music. And what a return it was! In a rare smart move, Elvis' management loosened their reigns on him setting him up to work with Chip Moman at Memphis' American Sound Studios to produce this album. The new environment and material seemed to refresh Elvis' creative spirit and he delivered some of the best performances of his career! The majority of the album has a strong R&B flavor, with some country thrown in for good measure. The original album was made up of the first 12 songs which included only one hit "In The Ghetto". This release has 6 bonus tracks that were recorded during the sessions for the album, including the hits "Suspicious Minds", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "Kentucky Rain". If these songs had been included on the original release, it probably would have went all the way to number 1!

Inexplicably, after the success of these recordings Elvis would never work with Chip Moman again nor be given this amount of creative freedom and quality material.

4 out of 5 stars Otis, My Man!.......2007-01-19

Simply Awesome. If you're not moved by this live version of "These Arms of Mine" you have no soul.

5 out of 5 stars OTIS LIVE.......2005-08-25

for some reason, I've always preferred the Otis Redding live recordings to his studio work. He was undoubtdedly one of the greatest live performers ever, and his live albums capture some of that, if not all of it. The Monterey Pop Festivel recording is great as well (in addition to having some great live Jimi Hendrix on side 1).

4 out of 5 stars A great album, but not perfect..........2003-07-15

It's easy to understand how people can arbitrarily give this album 5 stars based on the genius of Otis, the man, THE BIG O. But unfortunately, although the man himself is in top form at this juncture, the band isn't up to snuff.

The track selection is fine, and the band handles capably enough, but they're not on equal footing, both in regards to performance and recording; the mix is a little unbalanced. Far better is his "Live In Europe" release, and (if you can find it) his "Live At Monterey Pop Festival".

5 out of 5 stars Otis was unquestionably one of the greatest.......2002-03-17

soul singers ever. On this side, recorded 35 years ago, he and his band are in top form, threatening to "blow the roof off" The Whiskey.

Look at the list of tunes: Respect, These Arms of Mine, Satisfaction, Pain in My Heart, Any Ole Way -- I mean this album hits you upside the head and you come back asking for more!

My favorite cut, though, is Otis' version of James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Hey, I like it every bit as much as James's! This thing just cooks, baby! And keeps on cookin!

You like soul from the 60s? Don't fool around, buy this CD. You couldn't spend your money any better! Hey, I've had the vinyl issue of this side forever, and it's been through so many parties, that it's scratched, mutilated and damn near worn out! Glad to see this being put on CD.

Wasn't no one better than Otis!

5 out of 5 stars Otis Redding's Best Live Album.......2001-03-06

Recorded in 1966, Otis Redding's In Person At The Whisky A Go Go is his best live album, beating out Live in Europe, and is one of the best and most energetic live albums ever made. The album kicks off with the great I Can't Turn You Loose followed by Pain In My Heart, from Redding's first album. This is followed by the soulful plea of Just One More Day and a great version of his earlier hit Mr. Pitiful. The recording of Satisfaction on here is even better then the version on Otis Blue, and easily rivals the Stone's version. This is followed by three great soul songs, I'm Depending On You, Any Ole Way and the great ballad These Arms of Mine. Reddin then goes into a kickin' version of James Brown's Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, which at least as good as the original. The album closes with the classic Respect. This is just a tour de force performance and you can feel the energy coming off of it. This prooves just how great of a voice Otis Redding had and just how soulful he was. This is an essential album in Otis Redding's catalog and in the history of Soul and R&B.

4 out of 5 stars What's in a name?.......2007-02-20

I'm not sure what the band's moniker is referencing, be it the southern city, an ode to Elvis, or a nod to the architectual & design movement of the 80's??? Regardless, the band's second CD is a nice continuation of their gentle sound. It's becoming clearer who contributed what in the band Stars, as the members record solo. Unlike Amy Millan's trip to Southern Appalachia, Torquil Campbell's explorations seems much more authentic. It brings to mind the debut CD by Stars, Nightsongs. Nothing contrived, just simple and pure beauty of mood and vibe. Thank you for continuing the "Soft Revolution".

This album is awesome as everything this group does. There is not a day that goes by that I do not listen to at least one song by this group. Lee Williams has put in words what is in my heart. And "Child of God," if YOU really were, you would know not to judge and if this man is not Annointed, who is?? The power that comes from him, standing in one spot, is nothing less than a blessing from God. No one is perfect and I doubt anybody will try to claim such. Remember, Jesus did not come for the righteous, but so that sinners can be saved. We all fall short somewhere. We are all entitled to our opinions, but when you are talking about someone's connection to God, only God knows. Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC's have touched hearts all over the world and have led me to read many scriptures on account of listening to his songs and the stories about Jonah, Daniel, Moses, etc. and that's just me, you do not know what God has called him to do, so be careful how you judge. Lee Williams and the Spirituals have helped me in praising my God and I can only pray they never stop. God bless you too..........

This is a great album even though it isn't the best from Lee Williams! Yet how do you continue to out do yourself over and over anyway? Considering all their home runs this is still a slam dunk! To the Child of God Review, you've made yourself Judge of this group's salvation and beliefs and you aren't qualified! Only the Lord sees the heart! I Samuel 16:7

5 out of 5 stars Done It Again!.......2006-02-13

Lee Williams and The Spiritual QC's have done it again! This dynamic group has nothing to prove to anyone but they do what they do and do it well! I enjoy the entire CD and my first picks are "God's Got A Blessing", "Jesus Rose", "Call Him Jesus" and "Glad To Be Here". Songs lead by other group members demonstrate a beautiful bond between the QC's. Keep it up!

This 73-minute project demonstrates that the power of the gospel quartet will never diminish. Recorded live in Memphis, this project features Williams's singing-preacher persona on a vocal foundation built by the tight harmonizing of QC's Tommie Harris, Al Hollis, and Patrick Hollis. Though Williams and his cronies have the talent to pull off an a cappella album, the gospel-sung truths of Good Time are done up with all the pomp and flare of a full gospel band and horn section. From the funk jams of "Let's Get Down" to the intimate moments of "You've Been Good," Williams's vocal nuances carry the authority of one who has gained the kind of wisdom that only experience can bring. Throughout this record his steadfast and relaxed testimony of God's greatness pushes this music beyond entertainment, and creates a sacred environment in which the deepest and simplest truths are revealed with conviction. On the tail of success from their last project, Love Will Go All the Way, Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC's are now poised for a wider range of influence and the opportunity to write part of gospel history. --Israel Button

Album Description

William Christopher Handy "The Father of the Blues," was born in Florence, Alabama, on November 16, 1873. As a young boy, Handy had an almost insatiable desire to learn more about music. While the Florence Concert Band practiced inside the local barber shop, Handy would peek through the windows and play his cornet, along with the help of a fingering chart displayed on a blackboard. In 1893, he organized a vocal quartet and travelled to Chicago, St.Louis and Evansville, Indiana, ending up in Henderson, Kentucky, where he joined Mahara's Colored Minstrels. Handy stayed on the road for the next seven years, save two years spent at A&M College in Huntsville, Alabama, where he taught music. The year 1903 found W.C.Handy leading the "Knights of Pythias" Band in Clarksdale, Mississippi. One afternoon in Tutwiler, Mississippi, he heard an itinerant musician playing a guitar with a knife blade and singing "Going where the Southern Crosses the Yellow Dog." (The Southern and The Yellow Dog were railroad lines). Handy made a particular mental note of the singer and his unique songs and style and moved to Memphis. Trying to keep in step with the demand for music in Memphis, Handy organized his own band to compete for the more lucrative jobs in a burgeoning musical community. There was, however, stiff competition with the likes of Eckford and Higgins' Imperial Orchestra and Bynum's Superb Orchestra. The mayoral race in 1909 saw a ticket with three candidates and three bands. Handy and his band were hired by the Crump campaign to draw and entertain the crowd's (E.H.Crump had a huge political machine that ran Memphis for most of the first half of the twentieth century). Handy turned to the blues form, and to that itinerant street musician for his composition "Mister Crump" (this song would later be retitled "The Memphis Blues." In 1913, Theron Bennett, a Denver publisher, reissued "The Memphis Blus" with lyrics added by George A.Norton. The song was a huge success, however, Handy was misled by Bennett and Phillips into thinking the song has flopped and, consequently, sold the copyright for $50.00. Undaunted, Handy went back to writing and produced "St.Louis Blues" in 1914, a song which has been one of the most recorded songs in history and has been hailed as the "National Anthem of the Blues." In September of 1917, Handy, along with four band members from Memphis, made the trip to Chicago. There, Handy acquired 4 Chicago musicians and 4 others who had previously played under his direction. With the band assembled, Handy's Orchestra of Memphis headed to New York to make their first recordings. For the first time in over three quarters of a century the recordings of W.C.Handy have been preserved and are available from Memphis Archives in this unique collection.

4 out of 5 stars Solid introduction to W. C. Handy's work.......2007-06-13

The CD's notes begin by saying: "William Christopher Handy, `The Father of the Blues,' was born in Florence, Alabama on November 16, 1873." He began his musical career in earnest in 1893. One of his best known works, "St. Louis Blues," appeared in 1914; it is described as "one of the most recorded songs in history and has been hailed as the `National Anthem of the Blues.'" It seems to me that his music crosscuts ragtime, jazz, and blues.

The recording quality varies from poor to adequate. Many of the cuts are very scratchy but on a par with the technology of the time period. The various works were recorded between 1917 and 1923.

Some illustrations: "Moonlight Blue" is played at a more stately pace. There is an orchestra of 12 persons (plus Handy as Conductor and Coronet player). The resulting sound is distinctively Handy's. No vocals. There is some nice piano playing (apparently by Charles Hillman).

"St. Louis Blues"--the musicians are unknown (except for Handy). The tune begins with some bawdy brass and the song is taken at a quick pace. It is, in effect, most infectious. Overall, the playing is pretty crisp, although is sounded to me like things got a little loose toward the middle. Nonetheless, a lot of fun to listen to, scratchy sound and acoustic technology notwithstanding.

"Yellow Dog Blues" is another sprightly paced tune. After listening to a number of cuts, one can begin to pick up what might be called the W. C. Handy "sound."

Finally, "Muscle Shoal Blues." Again, an infectious tune, well played.

This represents a useful beginning to the work of W. C. Handy. This is the first CD I have ever heard of his work, so I can't say how it compared with any other recordings. But it seems, to me, like a very nice introduction to his body of work.

5 out of 5 stars handy beginnings.......2007-05-14

I do a jazz radio show, as well as fill in on a blues/roots one here in Sydney. Not only is this a useful CD to have, it is musically interesting, falling between ragtime and jazz. Hearing the real thing from back in the day is lovely and there is not all that much(Archeophone Records is one place to go)out there. In part, because much never made it into an acoustic recording laboratory of the time [check out the books by Lynn Abbott and Doug Seroff for more on that]. Truly "dinosaurs in the morning".

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime to jazz.......2004-10-15

Magnificent performances that, to my ears, document the evolution of ragtime to jazz. "Fuzzy Wuzzy Rag" (a piece blatantly borrowed from "Maple Leaf Rag"!) may very well be an example of pre-Original-Dixieland-Jazz-Band jazz, albeit recorded after that group's first waxings. Delayed history, I'm guessing. If "Fuzzy Wuzzy" hasn't gotten its proper historical due, perhaps the title has something to do with it. (Couldn't the composer have called it "Omnivorous-Mammal Stomp," or something?) Seriously, "Fuzzy" is ragtime gone wild, lively and contrapuntal as can be. The Six Brown Brothers, cranked up. Paul Whiteman, wired. No improvisation within earshot, but much early jazz, after all, had precious little ad-libbing. First-rate musicianship, including a bowed double bass that apparently gave the 1917 recording horn fits. Columbia-label 78s from this period are no gift to modern pick-ups; in light of this, the restored sound is quite good. Handy's place in jazz history is due for reevaluation.

4 out of 5 stars Irreplaceable History, And Fun Old Music.......2000-04-08

If you're familiar with the typical ragtime orchestra sound, and like it, you're in for a real treat. This is a very spirited group, and it makes other bands of the era (Art Hickman, Isham Jones, early Paul Whiteman) sound stoic and stale.
First became aware that W.C.Handy had recorded these "big band" sides when I saw the original entry in a Columbia Records catalog from 1918. All of the sides that he recorded then are featured on this CD, plus some he recorded in the early 1920's (for another label).
Sadly, the original masters were not used - commercial copies of uneven quality were the only source material available. Considering that, this reissue is nicely done, but be advised of the scratches and wear noises.
Though I could wish for better sound quality, I am well pleased with the fact that these indespensible ragtime orchestra sides are available once again.

5 out of 5 stars Good solid blues from an unlikely source.......2006-02-09

We don't normally assocaite sweden and Northern Europe as a hotbed of blues like Mississippi or Chicago but this is good stuff. Her love of the material shines through, there's a nice mix of covers and originals here, and there;s a fresh approach. A very enjoyable effort.

5 out of 5 stars Louise Plays Blues For Today.......2004-05-01

I love this album for a couple of reasons. 1st is Louise's obvious love of and reverance for true blues music. It comes through on song after song, particularly the covers of such classics as "God Don't Ever Change",and "I Just Wanna Make Love To You". Then there are the tracks on which she infuses her own
brand of modernenity, the opener "Ballad Of Sweet Louise", and "Baby Don't You Tear My Clothes", reminiscent of R.L. Burnside's "Wish I Was In Heaven Sittin' Down".
The other thing I love about this album is that I can see the evolution in her music. You see, I knew Louise when she was an exchange student from Sweden at my brother's high school in Jupiter, FL and lived up the street from me, way back around 1983. At the time Louise gave me a demo of some songs she had recorded with her punk band at the time called "Dysenteri" in Sweden. Even then though, she was blowing her harp in the tradition of the blues masters. I still have that tape.
All in all, if you're a blues fan or just love really great new music, you owe it to yourself to check out this amazing artist.
