Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Here we have the reissued classic Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recordings of four primary Copland ballets: Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, Rodeo (dances sequence), and Billy the Kid. Even in comparison with the composer's own recorded performances, these readings stand out, a bit above. The sheer wide-open-prairie sound that SACD multichannel now allows ... now how did those old CBS stereo master tapes become multi? who knows?... in any case the surround sound now achieves new vividness, and a kind of "you are there" accuracy of tonal presence, whether the orchestra is temporarily engaging in play among one or more reduced, chamber-sized groups, or gathered up in typical Copland massed effects. All of these ballets are given completely superlative readings by Bernstein and company, here. But this new SACD mastering/pressing allows the greatness to come through more completely than ever before. As if Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, and Rodeo were not enough: the recording of Billy the Kid tops it all. Even though this is the earliest recording, made in 1959, it was done in Boston's Symphony Hall. Although the differences in acoustic are subtle, if you listen closely among the changing tracks, you will hear the extra clarity and musical power of the Boston hall, long and deservedly renowned for its own special greatness of sound. In sum, you can buy this SACD for the sheer authenticity of the performances; or you can use it to test drive your multichannel system. In the latter case, you will be evaluating more than glitzy or floor-shaking sound effects, in favor of hearing just how much sheer music your rig can produce. The best of both worlds ... I am listening on five full-range speakers ... leaves a listener breathless with amazement. Billy the Kid is almost fifty years old, and sounds the best of the lot! Who can bear the agony of waiting to hear what contemporary BMG might be able to do with those equally famous Reiner/Chicago Symphony master tapes, also recorded in the pace-setting days of early stereo recording? Get this SACD disc, now. Forget movies for a while. Use your ears for fun, while you still have them. Highly recommended, for performance. Highly recommended for sound, especially in multichannel playback.

Secret of an Emo Pop Prince.......2005-01-25
How many artists can call themselves "an emo pop prince" as publisher Village Voice has suggested? Probably only the likes of Val Emmich. Emmich's album, "Slow Down Kid (SDK)", reflects his remarkable past success with events such as the 2003 Asbury Music Awards and his video, "Privacy Attracts a Crowd," rotating through MTV's Advance Warning as an unsigned major label artist at the time. SDK is not simply "just indie emo," but its grunginess and piano and xylophone ballads add a wide range with complete flow musically and lyrically. Emmich questions his own existence "I could care less if my brakes fail" (Bury Me) and frustrations with significant others "My love for you or a lifestyle" (Separate Things) to admitting that life is difficult but we can move on "It's hard to get your foot on the brake." (title track) With such forthright song lyrics to a band he respects as "The Rescue Effort" to even thanking "the message-boarders and the street teamers," Val Emmich is truly emo. The natural talent and fresh personal concern placed into the making of the album are what make SDK an indelible keeper.

Artist of the Year/ The Emo Pop Prince.......2005-01-10
This album is incredible. Val Emmich is an amazing song writer, as well as an amazing singer. Each song on the cd is written in such a simplistic yet haunting matter. Everyone can relate to what hes saying. His voice however, is really what brings these songs to life his voice is filled with such raw powerful emotion. Definately the best album of the year, this is an artist to look out for.
Medical Display 8/10 ~ A great opener that previews the album perfectly, this song is all over the place.
Bury Me 7/10 ~ One of the harder tracks on the album, lyrics are tough and agressive. He sings about the emotion we all get where you just give up and want to relax.
Privacy Attracts A Crowd 10/10 ~ One of the more emo tracks, wouldnt be out of place on a weezer album. Lyrics are simple and straight to the point "Privacy Attracts A Crowd...So Do us a Favor and Get Out"
Boy Who Cried Wolf 10/10 ~ The singer/songwriter song. You feel as if Val is a young boy whose on the verge of crying, it has this innocent feel to it.
Seperate Things 10/10 ~ Another hard track about two people who want different things, it has a somewhat punk uptempo sound to it.
Shock 10/10 ~ THIS IS USUALLY PEOPLES FAVORITE SONG. It carries such a simplistic melody, and is just really catchy, however its not corny and Val shows major emotion in this song. He goes from sounding sad, to angry, to screaming, to his falsetto. Great song a stand out track.
The Patient Patient 10/10 ~ My favorite track on the cd. Lyrics can be interpreted many ways but it does posses the line "my words are viens thru which my lifeblood spits" Amazing track.
Unstable 8/10 ~ A harder track and his voice gets deeper in this song sort of reminecent of H.I.M in some parts.
A Voice 9/10 ~ A real emotional song, about losing someone you love, the music goes from hard to acoustic to this jingle bells winterish sound.
Slow Down Kid 9/10 ~ The piano ballad of the album, wrapping up the albums entire theme in one final song. Sounds like something that can be found on a ColdPlay album, or Ben Folds, just less poppier.
Check him out hes truly a unique amazing artist.

From the art and word of mouth I was expecting this to be poppier, and it is fairly on the melodic and hooky side, but it also has some seriously rockin moments. Val Emmich's vocals sound like he's singing right at you, and the lyrics leave a lasting impression. The band is tight and the production is smooth but not over-the-top. Mostly what shines here are really, really strong songs and heartfelt energy. This is equal parts satisfying, punchy rock and sparkling pop...it's top shelf in my book, definitely worth your time.

For some reason, the convention is that bands make more rocking music and solo artists do mellower stuff. I was expecting this to be soft and pretty and something I could fall asleep to, but it's actually a warm, punchy alt rock album. It's got big guitars and a lot of choruses that stick in your head. It seems influenced by rock from the 70s and 90s, but also sounds fresh and not quite like anything else I've heard. It's melodic, catchy and has memorable lyrics. Emmich's voice and songwriting skills are what really make this record. The band is tight too. The production is subtle and just lets the infectious, well-written songs stand on their own. Standouts (to me) are "Bury Me", "Privacy Attracts a Crowd" and "A Voice". Anyway, I've babbled enough, you should really just get this album.
really good CD!.......2004-11-29
"bury me" was a tune i got hooked on through a mix CD-r that my bff had made me. when i saw the name "val emmich" was expecting some wussy songwriter stuff but what i got was a pretty rocking tune that reminded me a lot of my old favorites, the sheila divine or maybe even rival schools! really, really good stuff here. i bought this record (not from amazon) and really enjoy it. my favorite song on the record is actually one of the more acousticy ones, "shock". it reminds me of "undercovers on" by rival schools but with a husker du/bob mould kind of vibe to it. what a great CD!

Best emo out there.......2006-01-17
This CD is a must have for music with substance! It has raw guitar and bass sounds to it which may even seem a bit of a turn off at first, but if you listen to the entire composition and give it a few listens, it may become easier to appreciate the life these songs are made out of. This CD is one of those where the music stands out as something unique, yet it's arranged so well. Some hard rock songs, a few moderate rock songs, and a few slow rock songs with a keyboard ballad thrown in the works.
The songs may be very relatable, as they refer to the usual topics of relationships, drugs, and death, and also other subject matter such as forgiveness, greed, and desire are explored.
What makes this CD special is not just music or what the songs are about, but the way the lyrics are spoken. More frank than one might expect, and to the point.
There is not a single listed track on this CD which doesn't deserve a listen, and I do not say that for too many artists or CDs.

This cd has so much to offer. Val's voice comes as soothing yet disturbing at times. The lyrics really reach out the listener and I just get lost in the guitar riffs every time I hear their songs. This cd is highly recommended to all emo listeners out there.

On Val Emmich's "Slow Down Kid," he uses music that expresses a myriad of emotions, ranging from the tender, heartwrenching angst of Ben Folds and others to the impassioned, burgeoning upheaval of so many young artists today with whom the world just doesn't seem to sit correctly. He cleverly satires his television acting career in "Rat Race," sardonically mocking the conflict between earning so much and losing oneself in such a faceless, image-obsessed field. He show his fire burning withing with the first single, "Shock," and wraps the album perfectly with "Slow Down Kid," a moving piano-backed piece with enough vocal power to summarize the entire effort. Val's album is a definite must for any fans of the whole emo scene...or anyone just wanting to catch a glimpse of a new musical power on the rise. Check it out..

Val is emo at it's best. His voice and lyrics are both comforting and disturbing. I lose myself in the music everytime I listen to the album. There's something for everyone. The music is so intimate so you may want to listen to it alone with the stereo turned all the way up. Amazing stuff people, pick it up if you can.
