Ry Cooder has done some of the best soundtracks in the last 20 years or so (I wouldn't live without The Long Riders or the two-disc Music By Ry Cooder compilation, either)--most of them superior to the movies. (Sorry about that, Walter Hill--but it's true.) His lonesome, steel-guitar music for Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas is one of those cases where the movie and its music are equally great. I can't imagine one without the other. Every time I hear Cooder's opening theme, I see those wide western spaces and Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) wandering through them; and every time I see a still from the movie, I can hear Cooder's music playing in my head. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Paris, Texas (the movie).......2006-08-23

Who doesn't like Ry Cooder. His music is just so individual, like nothing else. (Good to listen to when you're spaced out). Or just listening to the soothing relaxing southern twang of his guitar just sends you to another plane. What I see when I hear this music is the wide open spaces and desserted highways on a hot hot summer's day somewhere in the middle of Texas. It just wants to make you chill out! It's so cool.

4 out of 5 stars Elemental and essential........2006-06-15

There are two types of soundtracks, and this is the more significant kind. The first type gives you a selection of tracks in no way related but for the taste and selection of a movie maker. I prefer my own compilations usually, but there are some good ones, usually from films no one really saw like Sleep With the Fishes. The other kind are inspired by images and landscapes no longer seen, but felt in the songs that came from them. They open the same spaces within the listener, but these are no longer owned by the movie maker, actors and their characters; some story in a film. It's not about the film at all anymore. It's music that doesn't demand you attention in the three-or-so minute grab of a regular song. This is music that you put in the background as you look to open your soul and create something yourself. And it's only found in this second type of soundtrack. There's the whole genre of New Age music which tries to do the same thing, though rarely achieves it with such deft subtlety. If you liked this one, listen to Monster's Ball, though skip the first five songs.

5 out of 5 stars In my top 5.......2005-04-03

Paris Texas and Wings of Desire - 2 of my favorite movies. I LOVE them. Beyond Wenders theme of love (in my mind)....is space. Space to think. And the music reflects this beautifully. It is short - I simply play it over and over!! And the dialogue is the point.....haunting, honest and just beautiful. How Travis knows just what the right thing to do is is nothing short of a miracle to me. His love is pure. Yes we all made lots of mistakes in our youth. He learned. Can't wait to see Wenders other movies.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack for a sparse summer.......2002-04-11

I listened to this album (LP, at the time) ceaselessly during the summer of 1987. I lived in a sparsely furnished apartment, painted stark white, with my first and only platonic male roommate.
When I woke up, the album went on. The sun shone brightly through our south and east windows. The ominous, pensive sounds generated by Ry Cooder were the perfect accompaniment to my barely post-adolescent A.M. ponderings.
This album makes an unforgettable background to a life. The movie was good, if melodramatic. The monologue on the soundtrack that people are complaining about is the explanation of the whole movie. It is important. We have CD players so we can program the tracks we don't want to hear out of our listening experience. But I recommend letting the monologue track stay. Let it meander through your head. Imagine the scenes and the logic Stanton describes. Then apply the music to the words and you will see why they are equally deserving of space on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2001-11-13

Ry Cooder drop-tunes his guitar and creates an incredible piece of film music. The title theme, Dark Was The Night are haunting and beautiful. But the real underrated treasure on this soundtrack is "She's Leaving The Bank." Creative, atmospheric and brilliant.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful wind ensamble.......2006-04-19

This was my 1st time listening to this wind ensamble and I was amazed. The "divertimento" by Persichetti is so good, its one of those peices that will make you say yes and have a smile from ear to ear. "Paris Sketches" is also an awesome peice, the quality of sound and intonation is just jaw dropping the ring of the drums (bass in particular) is really good. The peice by Karl Husa strange but exciting its like listening to the "Rite of Spring" for the very first time but all in all this whole cd is amazing. If you're really into the symphonic band and wind ensamle setting I would really suggest getting this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance; superlative sound quality........2002-08-24

This is one of those CDs that qualify for the "desert island" list, for wind symphony fans or just fans of classical music in general. Once again, Corporon and his ensemble have brought forth a brilliantly realized recording of a Percy Grainger classic. In addition to that, the rarely-heard gem by Persichetti and flourishes by Ellerby and Husa get their due, with solid intonation and a wonderful ensemble blend (hard to do in such works). Finney's work is not one of my personal favourites but it's a good piece, and we couldn't have asked for a better performance. If nothing else, however, the one work on this disc which makes it worth the cash is the Gillingham "Be Thou My Vision". (Do not confuse this with Mark Camphouse's similarly titled tunes.) This short piece is worth the emotional satisfaction of a few dollars; the beautiful chord work is excellently performed, as are the flute and saxophone solos; the brass are in a class by themselves; but the overall effect of the piece is nothing short of breathtaking. Let this piece wash over you. Let it take you where angels fear to tread. The journey is tear-inducing, sigh-bringing, and heart-rending. Dry your face and then hang on to your seat, because "Music for Prague" is next, and it's a thrill ride all its own. The sound quality is top-notch. On a good system you should be in the first half of the concert hall. Not too much reverb and a very natural ensemble sound. Put this in your CD player when you buy it and it will probably never see the shelf.

This Wisconsin band may still be scrambling to find its own identity, but that only adds to the excitement on its third full-length release. Part of the appeal is playing guess the influences: Are those big, sloppy melodies a nod to the Foo Fighters? Is singer Scott Sherpe mimicking Morrissey with his inscrutable wails? Are the jagged guitar riffs aping At The Drive-In--or is it Van Halen? Whatever is happening, Paris, Texas shakes off its emo tag with such conviction on firebrand rock songs like "Rebel Radio" and "Hip Replacement" that speculation soon gives way to the much more gratifying act of head-banging. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Awesome disk, great songs!.......2007-02-09

Imagine if the musicians of Rush came of age in the 90's and listened to U2, Van Halen, and a steady diet of Punk & Grunge- oh without the Ayn Rand references and the castrato voice- this is the band you would have. They are like Bob Mould's Sugar on steroids. Bombs Away, Arsonist, and Hip Replacement are still in heavy rotation on my I-pod. It's all killer, no filler. The musicianship, song writing, & vocals are excellent.

        4 out of 5 stars Light up!.......2006-08-03

"Like You Like An Arsonist" is like a Hollywood drama, full of one liners surrounded by explosions. Lines like the chorus of "One Hot Coma" ("I want to live in one hot coma, so I can spend all my days and nights in bed with you") pretty well describe the collision course Paris, Texas leads on this record, taking the soft, poetic introspection of singer-songwriters and pouring gasoline and testosterone all over it. The result is a grungy pop record that's extremely difficult to nail down into any one category except "hard rock," and in my book, that's a sign of a great hard rock record.

The last band with this kind of grasp of rhythmic shifts and an undeniable underground appeal was Quicksand, but they couldn't be called contemporaries. You wouldn't find reverse guitar opening a Quicksand record, for instance, but "Bombs Away" blossoms from a reverse guitar line into an '80s style cricket dance symphony of guitar and finally into a thudding, bombastic singalong.

"Like You Like An Arsonist" is first and foremost about the guitar, but Scott Sherpe is possessed of the vocal tract to complete Paris, Texas's signature sound. His swagger on tunes like "Action Fans Help Us" and the driving-on-drugs heart-thumper "White Eyes" makes these songs something out of the ordinary; rock posturing is easy, but posturing in an original way isn't. Sherpe has a voice and he knows how to use it. One can easily hear influence from the past three decades of music acting on all the musicians in this band, united under the umbrella of energized rock 'n' roll and saying something new in a language the popular culture can still understand.

Lyrically, you just can't beat metaphors like "I feel like an arsonist, because you are my perfect match, and you light up everything around you," which help this band marry danger and infatuation in a way that hasn't been heard since Foreigner and the '70s. Sure, there are other bands around trying to pay homage to this sordid musical time period, but before you get left in The Darkness, take a trip to Paris, Texas, where decades collide.

Exploring the connections between early music and what we know as folksong, Joel Cohen and his very adventurous and competent band of musicians not only show us where many familiar tunes come from, they also give us fresh and illuminating renditions of songs from the 10th century to the middle of the 20th century. Besides the recording's obvious educational value, its primary purpose, according to Cohen, is "to give pleasure." That it does, often in amusing ways, as when a song with religious origins is transformed into a ribald descendant. It's also fun to see how widespread some songs are, with different versions common to many countries. Cohen demonstrates how songs that came from Renaissance forms were preserved by common folk long after the "elite" classes abandoned them. The songs are enhanced by excellent instrumental playing and well-conceived arrangements. --David Vernier

Many early music groups these days explain cross-cultural musical influences in their program notes, and proceed to play their selections accordingly. Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata take it the logical step further by actually performing the "root" pieces side by side with the later music that reflects their particular influence. The result is inspired, thought-provoking groupings of related tunes and texts that span not only centuries but continents. The Boston Camerata is primarily a vocal ensemble, with a sound that is spare, pure and direct. Some of their renditions are performed a cappella, while others are accompanied by light, period instrumentation. If you've ever heard this group live in concert, you may recall the surreal effect of sitting in a theater that is pin-drop quiet, waiting for one or two musicians at a time to step forward and break the silence with a clarity and presence that holds the entire audience spellbound from first note to last. The effect of listening to this recording is much the same. My favorites on this release are the groupings of different versions of the same ballad--"Three Ravens", "Gypsy Davy", and "Barbara Allen", for example. The pairing of the Appalacian song "Betty Anne" with its exact harmonic match--a 16th century ricercada for viols by Diego Ortiz--is also quite striking, and I also enjoyed the "shape-note" and "Fa-sol-la" singing-school selections representative of early American music. In the insert, director Joel Cohen explains: "This unorthodox recording, an intentionally provocative mix of early art song and modern folksong, is meant first of all to give pleasure - but it is also a meditation on history, on archetypes, and on the transmission of human culture." The Boston Camerata succeeds admirably here on both counts!

5 out of 5 stars Tour de Force of American Musical Roots!.......2001-01-05

Prepare to go on an amazing, haunting musical tour when you put this disc on your player. Joel Cohen (bless him) has once again assembled a group of musicians and singers who are up to the task of taking themselves, and you the listener, back through the mists of musical time. This disc contains songs that span hundreds of years, many of which actually originate in other lands. Yet, these songs would find their way into the early diverse fabric of colonial America, and go on to inspire much of emerging folk music in this country. Some of these songs are secular, but others have a distinctly religious flavor (as in the first piece on Judgment Day and the "stars falling"). Others are merry, dance-like tunes, and remind one of what might have been performed in medieval courts in Europe. Some are sung in english, others in different languages. The range of musical style and vocal interpretation is incredible. This wonderful diversity reminds the listener that America always had diverse roots, and even in colonial times, we were a nation that drew its strength and inspiration from many cultural sources. I like to listen to this disc during the bleak nights of winter, but it is wonderful music for any occasion. If you really are intrigued by the historical development of American music -- or any music -- then this disc is a "must" for your collection. Also recommended: "The World Turned Upside Down" (Barry Philips), "A Land of Pure Delight" (His Majestie's Clerkes), and "Simple Gifts: Shaker Cbants and Spirituals" (Joel Cohen and Boston Camerata).

        5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2000-03-25

The album is astonishing. It is rare to find a continuous line of musical thought from the turn of the previous millenium to its end. This album demonstrates the evolution of music over about a thousand year period and includes some very early versions of what we would call modern songs.

It is worth the price of the CD several times over and is one of my favorites in my CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars How can a band no one knows of produce an album like this?.......2003-04-16

...It all began back when Paris Texas released their 1999 CD, and I heard it at the local shopping mall one day. The song played was "Without Even Kissing." I went up the counter and asked what band the song was by, as the song was amazing.

I kinda got out of Paris Texas after that, seeing...I had...no way of finding one of their CDs...>So Paris Texas faded into the background.

        Until now.

I'm going to start off with this statement: If you love punk, and love songs with amazing lyrics but even more musical talent, Paris Texas should be on the top of your list. Frankly, it depressed me to think that a band as good as Paris Texas has virtually no fanbase whatsoever. None of my friends have even heard of them.

This short, although VERY sweet album, is definitely worth a buy. If you don't feel like buying it, at least download "Razor New Neighbors." You won't be let down.
