5 out of 5 stars World Class Music from a World Class Talent.......2007-05-29

The great author James Baldwin once stated that "the artist has always been a disturber of the peace in some way." When we hear Nina Simone sing with composed outrage such songs as "Mississippi Goddam," and "Work Song," in protest against the overt racism practiced during the 1960s in the southern U.S., we know that hers was indeed a politically charged consciousness. The singer's recording of "Mississippi Goddam" was so controversial when first released that Simone would come to attribute the decline of her career in the U.S., and her relocation to France, to the fallout that followed. However, the 20 songs gathered here on FEELING GOOD, THE VERY BEST OF NINA SIMONE, demonstrate that the greater range of her musical talents went far beyond social or political protest.

Trained as a classical pianist at the famed Juilliard School of Music, Simone was an extraordinary interpreter of song lyrics as well as of musical genres. In the title track of this CD, she draws listeners into an inspired celebration of life with a song that dozens of artists are now covering in 2007 (please note review of Randy Crawford's "Feeling Good.") She can croon seductively and vulnerably in songs like "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," "Ne Me Quitte Pas," and "I Put a Spell on You." And yet she can also go straight to church on the gospel presentations "Take Me to the Water" and "I'm Going Back Home." Talent of such amazing caliber doesn't pop up every decade. This generous sampling of Simone's genius makes one very glad she came along and gave the world as much as she could when she did.

AIN'T MUCH ANYMORE THAT PUTS A CHILL DOWN MY SPINE. THIS LADY DOES. SHEER PLEASURE TO HEAR THIS VOICE! COME ON FLUSH THE C**P OUT OF YOUR HEAD. POP THIS CD INTO YOUR PLAYER AND JUST LISTEN...

4 out of 5 stars Musical Gumbo from a Class Act.......2007-04-06

I bought this CD right after seeing the Doolittle girl (American Idol 2007 favorite) perform "Feeling Good". That song hooked me! "Feeling Good" (soul), "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (pop), "I Put a Spell on You" (blues), "Love Me or Leave Me" (jazz) are my favorites and worth the price of this CD. "Mississippi Goddam" (awful) is the low point of this "disjointed" compilation disc. This CD is also interesting for Simone's excellent interpretations of Billie Holliday's classics, "Don't Explain" and "Strange Fruit". Stir in a little French a' la Edith Piaf, "Ne Me Quitte Pas", and gospel, "Take Me to the Water", and the listener has musical gumbo from one classy lady that defied all catagories.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2006-11-10

Trying to get to know Nina's music more and this was an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-02-04

My father was given this cd as a gift; not his cup of tea... I'll forgive him that, but this album changed my outlook on soul. More sophisticated than motown, more alive than Loussier. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Love Me or Leave Me" utterly gutting!

1 out of 5 stars WHAAAT? No KISS???.......2007-01-02

I won't even bother buying this CD since it does not include one song from the popular and terrific MTV Unplugged session with KISS!

1 out of 5 stars Never Received It.......2006-11-06

I never received this item and when I go to "My Account" it is impossible to find out whAT HAPPENED. NEXT QUESTION: AM I HAPPY?

2 out of 5 stars Selection is good, quality is very bad!.......2004-09-23

The recording and mastering of this album is so bad that I get an headache if I listen to it with an headphone. I would recommended Vol. 2 though, everything is perfect in that album.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-07-15

Granted, there are some good songs on there, but nothing can compare to the unplugged sessions that were done by Nirvana and Alice In Chains, those two are undoubtedly the two best. If you want some amazing unplugged work, invest in those two instead, I gauruntee that you will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING REMASTERED ELO COLLECTION..................2006-11-25

This cd collection of Elo greatest hits is not in chronological order, but it really does'nt matter. There are some edited versions of songs but I really believe Jeff Lynn put alot of care into this remastered gem. These two cds sounds so awesome that the edits really don't take alot out of this collection. Jeff Lynn believed each Elo song should be treated like a single, each single given the time and effort and care to make each single song stand out in it's own way, weather you love or hate the song, Jeff Lynn had that philosophy. This Elo collection defines that Jeff Lynn philosophy. I listen to this collection and I am just amazed at the skill and craftmanship of Jeff Lynn and Elo. Jeff truly is one of Englands greatest single hit makers. This collection is better than the Elo box sets that have been released in the last 16 or so years. the sound quality of these cds is incredibly pristine. This music may sound like gooey 1970s bubblegum music to some, but to me it is amazingly creative structured music that is catchy with rythm and spiritual form. I have to admit when I hear some of these Elo songs I have to crack a smile. Jeff Lynn and the rest of Elo put alot of pride into each song they ever created, this collection shows that. A true must have for Elo fans and music fans in general. The remastering on this cd set is incredible. Note: Jeff Lynn in 1994-1995 engineered for the three remaining Beatles at the time with "Free as a bird" and "True Love", this shows you the respect even the remaining Beatles had for Jeffs amazing talent.............

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST ELO GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.......2006-05-26

This collection is well worth it. I Highly recommend "LIGHT YEARS" to any fan of the Electric Light Orchestra. The amount of songs compaired to other compilations is hard to beat.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy pop with classical touches.......2004-10-29

Electric Light Orchestra was one of the UK's most consistent and successful bands of the 1970s. They had a long string of hits throughout that decade and the first part of the next one. Their sound was characterised by plush harmonies, loads of strings and catchy tunes. These 38 tracks include the overwhelming majority of their hits from the 1970s and the early 1980s plus some great album tracks. My favourites include Livin' Thing with its captivating fiddle, the addictive Sweet Talkin' Woman, the rousing Turn To Stone and others like Wild West Hero Don't Bring Me Down, Mr Blue Sky and 10538 Overture. It may sound like lightweight pop, but it is a skilfully honed, intelligent and cleverly produced style with classical flourishes that always remained accessible. If you like catchy pop with a touch of the orchestral, this album's for you.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Album, but...............2004-01-08

Again this is one of ELO's best, with ALOT of their best songs on it, but if you paid the " outragious " price here that Amazon is charging you, then you've been royally ripped off.....sorry.FYE's is selling this same album for $24.00 and change. It is a good album though.

4 out of 5 stars Entrancing stuff.......2001-08-12

My,my,what a diverse taste in music I have.Part of it extends to this heavily enjoyable assortion of superb musical numbers.Particular favourites include the funky, fusion noted number Evil Woman, the jolty, unforgettable Mr.Blue Sky,the brilliant Last Train to London and the heavy bass number Confusion.Born, bred and based in Birmingham myself,it makes me proud such musical talent could emerge from my home city.Definitely one of the best bands of the '70's,and significantly make us remember the decade.I thoroughly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic hits you can watch.......2005-05-31

When I saw this disc I thought "Another "Best of Unplugged? Let's see what left-overs were included here".
I was surprised to see that almost all the songs were hits by these artists since the earlier Best Of's included songs I had never heard before.

17 tracks (10 of which were previously unreleased) in their acoustic versions where the standouts are:
Sting - Message in a bottle
REM - It's the end of the world as we know it....
Alanis Morrissette - Hand over feet
Sheryl Crow - Leaving Las Vegas
Kiss - Sure know something
The cure - Boys don't cry
Live - I alone

THe bonus here is that a DVD with the 17 performances is included which makes this a must have for all Mtv Unplugged lovers out there.

Very enjoyable and I highly recommend to all music lovers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "The Very Best..." is right!.......2006-09-05

These are all my favorite Bill Joel songs. I never tire of hearing them and having them compiled on one CD is fantastic! Fans will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Skies?.......2006-03-31

Looking over the track listing, we have all the Joel classics here... "Piano Man"... "Just The Way You Are"... "We Didn't Start The Fire"... "She's Got A Way" and of course, "Scandinavian Skies". Huh? Don't remember that one? Dig out your copy of Nylon Curtain. If you're putting together the Joel staples on one CD, I highly doubt that sits on top of the pile of essential songs. But aside from the obvious choices that could go in place of "Scandinavian Skies", it has a nice selection of songs for the casual listener. But of course, the casual listener would be better off dropping the extra money for the Greatest Hits 1-3 Box. Overall, 4 stars on the weight of the songs included, not on the ones they didn't.

3 out of 5 stars Piano Man From The Standards.......2005-07-22

There are just so many people that sometimes have to know a artist through the sounds of Broadway. Why? Because there is no other way you could find the songs he or she has made but there. For one of the greatest artists of the U.S., Billy Joel, he has truly shown that truthful with the status of Movin' Out. Although it is sad he hasn't recorded a new tune in almost a decade. His songs still remain true from the heart after all this time. Sadly, when it comes to hits packages, they almost hit the nail the nail on the head completely, especially for Billy Joel.

Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel is a single disc collection consisting of 19 tracks that the piano man has truly made a spectacle of. The songs here have really been remastered very well and still show his music simply is still alive. There are so many great songs here that are highlighted here including Piano Man, River Of Dreams, the hard driven We Didn't Start The Fire, all the way to Soul-driven tracks like Tell Her About It, The Grammy-Winning Just The Way You Are, Uptown Girl, and Movin' Out (Anthony's Song).

Yet, with the good sides about this collection, there are a lot of disadvantages from this collection. One of them, is that the collection is a little bit expensive, where you could get most of these tracks from another Billy Joel collection like 2001's Essential Billy Joel. Another disadvantage is that the album also does overshadow so many good songs as well like, The Longest Time, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, A Matter of Trust, and the upbeat Big Shot from 52nd Street.

Nevertheless, Billy Joel has truly made so many great songs for all to enjoy. It is just sad that with a generation that is more into acts like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, doesn't know how brilliant Billy Joel has made pop music. Still, Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel isn't a bad collection especially for anybody who doesn't have any of his records, but die hard longtime fans might want to avoid this collection. It doesn't really go to extremes.

4 out of 5 stars Evidently Chickentown.......2007-05-08

The song 'Evidently Chickentown' - played on the closing credits of The Sopranos on April 15th, 2007 is a track from John Copper Clarke's 1980 Album 'Snap Crackle & Bop' - now available as a remastered CD (on Amazon). If you liked the song and want to hear more from England's original Punk Poet, I would definitely recommend 'Snap Crackle & Bop'. Read the Amazon description of the CD to get a sense of what JCC is about... politically and socially savvy, sarcastic, wickedly humorous, great beats. I have loved this album since the 1980's, when he was hugely popular with the British punk crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Sopranos Episode 79 Stage 5.......2007-04-17

This isn't so much a review just trying to help people find the song evidently chickentown. This is the song that played at the end of the sopranos episode 79 stage 5 april 15th during christophers babys christening. It's not on itunes i did find it on [...] it's the only song i know from these guys 25 bucks is alot of money to spend for one song, i just bought this hopefully when i get it i'll like the rest. I figured though it being different and unique sounding which is pretty rare maybe its worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars One shot wonder.......2007-02-08

Other than "Black Betty", just some mediocre southern rock. But worth it just for that.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not an original band.......2006-04-20

I bought this cd cuz i love the black betty tune...w/great expectation i figured their other material was gonna blow me away...wrong...Ram Jam should have named themselves Rip-OFF
Jam....after listening to this cd i have concluded that they didnt't have an original bone in their bodies...the songs were a mishmash of blatant allman/skynyrd/blackfoot attempts...the vocals were without energy or feel...i can understand why they wernt sucessful where others were

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for awesome riffs, average singing.......2005-12-27

Ram Jam was an accidental discovery. I have been eyeing this cd for a while now, and now that I've listened to it, I can say that if you like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, or even AC/DC, this is your music. The one song that I really don't care for is "keep your hands on the wheel", but that's only because of the singing, which isn't great, but it gets the job done. The song "High Steppin'" is a good instrumental song, too. All in all, buy this, it pretty much rules.

5 out of 5 stars Black Betty Ready.......2005-11-10

The song "Black Betty" is reason enough to buy this CD. It contains the long-play version of this song..crank it up so the neighbors can give you dirty looks. As for the other tracks they are just ok. But Black Betty makes it worth the investment. Rocked in '77, rocks now.

5 out of 5 stars Both of their LPs on 1 CD!!.......2005-03-18

Ram Jam were a very hard rocking 70's band fronted by Bill Bartlett, formerly of the Lemon Pipers (yeah, the Green Tambourine guys). The albums were produced by bubblegum producers Kasentetz-Katz (same guys who produced Lemon Pipers, 1910 Fruitgum Co. and a lot of other 60s hits). But the Ram Jam albums really rocked hard (especially the lesser known 2nd album titled Portrait of the Young Artist as a Ram). Black Betty was a top 40 hit (a remake of an old Leadbelly song)and was fairly representative of their 1st LP. If all you've ever heard is the single version, which is on most compilations, you owe it to yourself to hear the full version which has a much longer middle section that rocks. This import CD contains both LPs and has everything released by this band except Should've Known Better, which was the B side to the Black Betty single. Great very underrated stuff!

4 out of 5 stars wow...thorough retrospective...........2007-01-12

considering Manfred Mann was much more of a chart success in the UK, this collection has all the hits a US audience will ever need, including Do Wah Diddy, The Mighty Quinn, and the full length 7 minute cut of Blinded by the Light. It also has some of the more minor radio hits of the late 70s and early 80s by the band, including Runner--which is, surprisingly, an edit that is a minute shorter than the LP version. The hard to come by Lies (through the 80s) is here as well. The only glaring omission is the song Make the World Go Round, another of his pseudo-synthpop tracks from the 80s era of music. While most of the music is broken into separate discs, 60s on CD 1, 70-80s on disc 2, there are also some odd newer recordings, like a 1997 cover of the new wave track "Pleasure and Pain," originally recorded by the Divinyls in the early 80s.

The mastering is excellent--but there are absolutely NO liner notes past the general track information. You'd think with such a career spanning set there would be some brief history inside.

4 out of 5 stars Hello old friend.......2007-01-15

I used to listen to SB&Q when I was in my 20's and hearing some of these song again after some 25 years, its like an old friend come home to stay. Especially the songs from Lifeboat and Slipstream. Thanx a ton.

4 out of 5 stars Pure pop-rock.......2006-11-02

The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver were one of those hard-working bands of the 1970s who never made it as big as they should have. As a result, they seemed to drift from genre to genre (e.g. reggae to Eagles to Police) in order to hit upon the right success formula. In retrospect, only the reggae attempts were misguided (like many other white-men-sing-Jamaica songs of the time).

The songs that have lasted the best are the classic singles: 'Arms of Mary', 'Sailing', 'When the Train Comes' and 'You Got Me Anyway'. Indeed I was surprised how many of the tunes were familiar. I guess I'm one of the millions who had no idea that Iain Sutherland was responsible for so many standards.

Although there is the occasional tinkling of the piano or organ in the background, SB&Q were very much a guitar band, and featured the marvellous Tim Renwick on lead. To my ear, this is a very similar genre to the Alan Parsons Project and the Eagles, if such is possible.

I have to confess that this is the first SB&Q album I have bought, despite having seen the band in concert. They did a gig at my school (Oundle) in the mid-1970s, and I suspect we enjoyed it but it was just too middle-of-the-road for us hardened, progressive Henry Cow fans.

It may still be the supermarket muzak of the Noughties, but good luck to them, and let's hope they're getting all the royalties they deserve.

4 out of 5 stars great but could be better.......2002-07-05

why do record companies not listen to the people who buy the music??
this cd has some of the best music that this underrated band from the seventies ever made but is still missing tracks which would have made it a must for any cd collection!
tracks such as "if i could have your loving" "every tear i cry"
and the great rocker "bluesy world"
like another great seventies band "badfinger" the sutherland brothers never quite made it to the top but had some world wide hits such as "the pie" "arms of mary"
they have another link to badfinger as the biggest hit they ever had which they wrote was sung by another artist and that track of course was "sailing" by rod stewart ( badfingers biggest hit was "without you" by nillson) and of course the lead guitarist willie i believe played later on with joey molland from badfinger
best tracks on this cd are of course "arms of mary" " the pie"
dream kid etc and is a worthwhile additon to those who love good honest pop/rock and well written songs from the fabulous seventies

5 out of 5 stars Good Compilation Of An Underappreciated Band.......2002-06-27

I've been a fan of this band ever since I saw them open for Elton John here in Greensboro in 1973. At the time, they were the Sutherland Brothers & Quiver. The Sutherlands and Quiver were two bands that merged. Tim Renwick (guitar) and Willie Wilson (drums) were the key members of Quiver. They gave Iain and Gavin Sutherland, both fine songwriters and singers, the musicians they needed to fulfill the potential of their songs. As with all "best of" compilations, there are some songs that didn't make the cut for some reason. Some of the songs that aren't included are: "Ain't Too Proud To Beg","Bluesy World","You & Me","One More Night With You", and "Midnight Rendezvous". There are still a lot of great songs that are here: "Real Love","You Got Me Anyway","Arms Of Mary","Dream Kid","Champion The Underdog","Sailing", and "Love On The Moon". Gavin and Iain both wrote songs that had beautiful melodies, but at times they were lyrically feeble. To my knowledge, the only singles that charted were "Arms Of Mary" and "You Got Me Anyway". Considering the quality of the music in the mid to late '70's, it's depressing to think that a band this talented and accomplished couldn't have had more success. Along with Badfinger, the Sutherland Brothers were one of the bands of the '70's that deserved great success and recognition and got virtually none.
