In 1961, the Ventures tried to recapture the success of their breakthrough hit, "Walk--Don't Run." At a point when the "band" consisted of just guitarists Bob Bogle and Don Wilson (nonmembers Nokie Edwards and Howie Johnson are featured on bass and drums, respectively), the album's sound and feel--rock tunes drenched with string arrangements and slow country ballads--are very similar to the approach that made Duane Eddy a star. The standouts on this somewhat conservative outing are "Lullaby of the Leaves," Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" and the Stringalongs' "Wheels." --Dave Provost

The Ventures at their best - this album has always been my absolute favourite by the group and now even more so. The digital transfer made it even better, and the strange thing is that the music on this particular CD doesn't feel as many other "oldies" do, that is somewhat "aged". If you like instrumentals,then this one is a must for you.

The sweet sounds of the twangy fenders reverberate through the years since the original recording. Cut after cut brings back a time when rock and roll was simple and uncomplicated. This light but determined effort is, in my humble opinion, their best all around album.

This is great music to listen to in the car with the top down.

The Ventures started out using Fender guitars, and produced a more smooth sound than their later hits with Mosrite guitars.

"Peridia" is a sentimental favorite.

This CD features the Ventures third and fourth albums.

Another Smash is a typical early '60s Ventures album. It features one chart single, the classic "Lullaby of the Leaves", plus a lot of cover versions of recent instrumental hits and two Ventures originals. "Riders in the Sky" is especially good.

The Colorful Ventures features songs with colors in the title. "Silver City" and "Blue Moon" were chart singles from this album. Other solid covers include "Blue Skies", "Red Top" and "White Silver Sands". But the real highlight of the album is the great Ventures original "Yellow Jacket".

These are the original recordings. NOT MONO.......2000-10-21

I have both the original stereo and mono lps. And yes, there's a difference in the lead guitar track in "Blue Moon" on Colorful Ventures. But that's the way the Stereo version was originally released. The people complaining remember the mono version. These albums were recorded great, especially for 1961. And it really shows on these cds. The godfathers of modern guitar shine. And its all original. Enjoy

I don`t know what to do........2000-04-10

I have been caught before with re-recordings of originals - usually by the Tring label. I had all the original vinyl recordings and now I don`t know whether or not to get the CDs - perhaps we could get some verification as to whether they are the original recordings or not.

I own an original 'COLORFUL VENTURES' dolton album and was set to thinking about the 'DISAPPOINTED' reviewer from virginia and his thoughts of this 'coloUrful ventures' release.

What an incredible find these Ventures reissues are! As a kid I always loved the group, but tended to buy only their singles. Now I can also enjoy the superb sounds of such classics as "Trambone" and "Meet Mr. Callaghan" from "Another Smash"and "Bluer Than Blue" from "The Colourful Ventures" as well. The guy who wrote the first review either never heard the originals or somehow got the group mixed up with somebody else! This disc has magnificent sound, and the tracks are all original.

Return of the Quincy guys!.......2004-07-26

I hope I'm not the only one who treasures the one-shot CBS album by Quincy, released around 1980. Of all the new-wave power pop releases of the era, that collection continues to impress me with its well-crafted, energetic and insanely catchy tunes.

Well, the guiding forces behind Quincy, brothers Stephen and Brian Butler, have returned in grand style to the Beatlesque pop genre with this fine CD.

Every song is lovingly performed, with the kind of tunesmithery younger bands can't seem to achieve. The brothers' harmonies are to die for.

Occasionally I wish the performances weren't so laid back. At the same time, I wish the lyrics reflected a bit more of the creators' experience and maturity. I guess I'm trying to have it both ways: wishing it was 1980 again, but not wanting to relive the confusion of being 19 years old.

To the Butlers, well done! To the rest of you, buy this CD. Then go see if you can find Quincy (Columbia NJC 36471).

One of my high school teachers is a member of this band. They played at my school and it was awesome. They have a great sound and every song is catchy. This cd should be in your collection.

Im in love with this cd. I listen to it constantly ever since i saw Smash Palace play in New York City at the Lakeside Lounge. They are a great live band, real tight and excellent musicians. But its really the cd that sends me. Every song is fantastic. I cant remember the last time i bought a recording of a band where even half of the songs were good. The one thing i cant figure out is why the cd is so hard to find and why dont i hear them on the radio?

I love this record. I saw them live at the Pontiac in Philly and they blew me away. i went right out and bought the cd and its a really cool record. Every song is outstanding. I highly recommend this one. check it out!

this is the best cd ive heard this year. it reminds me of oasis, the beatles, the kinks and many other great bands the have excellent songs. i recommend this record to all lovers of great songwriting.
