Try to think of an enduring, widely respected, artistically progressive female songwriting duo. Now, try to think of one besides the Indigo Girls. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been pounding the folk-rock pavement since the early 1980s, filling the ears of eager listeners with their ethereal harmonies, lush arrangements, and evocative lyrics. Retrospective traces their progression from budding singer-songwriters to stunning musicians, arrangers, activists, and artists. Progressing chronologically, the album allows the listener to appreciate the depth and breadth of the pair's musical growth--from the reedy, passionate plea of "Strange Fire" to the blithe bounce of "Least Complicated" to the dark electricity of "Go." As time passes, more instruments are added, more sensitive political topics are addressed, and more experimental techniques are incorporated. The two new cuts--Ray's uptempo but slightly turbulent "Devotion" and Saliers's heartfelt road ballad "Leaving"--are reminiscent of the Girls' younger days but also reflect their artistic growth through subtle lyrical turns and deft melodic variations. --Sally Weinbach

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2002-06-26

I have yet to be disappointed by these girls! I loved that most of my favorites were on here.
This is one of my cds that I can listen to a hundred times and not tire of it!

5 out of 5 stars Indigo Girls Greatest Hits...kind of..........2002-04-06

...some of their best songs are missing. But I could never fit my choices for the Indigo Girl's greatest hits onto one CD, and apparently they couldn't either. But what they did do really well was create the "Indigo Girl's Primer". If you want an introduction to the IGs, this is it! You'll hear a little from most all of their albums and you can figure out the songs you like. (And then you will probably go out and get all of the other CDs anyway...but we'll let you figure that out yourself!) The only other CD I might recommend for someone wanting to "sample" their songs first is "1200 Curfews". That album is a live double CD with all of their hits and some great covers and other 'treats' as well!

4 out of 5 stars voice from Italy.......2001-08-26

It's true, this CD is the best way to know IndigoGirls

4 out of 5 stars Shows why it's hard to do an IG greatest hits CD.......2001-06-11

I bought this CD out of a sense of duty.

Okay, really I wanted the two new songs. I own the albums with the rest of the tunes on them, with the exception of the studio version of Strange Fire. I can't argue too strenuously with the songs that were picked for this CD -- they're fine -- but they're not the ones that mean the most to me. Great songs that could have been included instead:

Love's Recovery, Language or the Kiss, Welcome Me, Love Will Come to You, and The Wood Song.

But anyway. For the most part, the songs picked for this CD show the essence of the IG sound, with a nod to the way in which it has evolved over the years. Buy it if you need an introduction to the girls. But do yourself a favor and don't stop with this CD.

Get Swamp Ophelia for a sense of the musical complexity they're capable of, get their self-titled CD for a sense of their folk roots, and move on from there.

5 out of 5 stars Fits the Title.......2001-05-09

All my favorite songs on one cd....not too many studio releases fit that category. This disc actually replaces the first intro I had of IG...a tape made by a friend that went with me up and down the east coast for 5 years or so that just wore out from extended play. This is a great compilation--all their most popular songs are on there, and are even arranged so they flow smoothly (more important than it seems).

That said, there are some things missing...where's Joking? Hammer and a Nail? Hey Jesus? But some of the best songs Emily and Amy wrote would probably be under appreciated for the mainstream audience that this seems to be intended for. This collection does seem to skim the surface a bit, but takes all the best and well-loved songs from their past albums...its impossible not to sing with all the songs from beginning to end!

The two new songs are a great bonus. This collection would have benefitted from a live song or two, or maybe a new rendition of some of the old ones (Least Complicated, maybe, or Kid Fears or Closer to Fine). But in terms of collections, 12:00 Curfews is much better...all these songs and many more are on there. (And I'm not even a big fan of live recordings!) In general, this release is an almost perfect compilation, spanning all the years and refreshing the memory of what makes the Indigo Girls a staple in modern folk.

Amazon.com essential recording

A fresh, uncompromising attempt to incorporate 1978 pop techniques into the band's familiar sound, Some Girls opens with the disco sass of "Miss You" and closes with the self-destructive punk of "Shattered." (Both songs, especially "Miss You," with its distinctive Mel Collins sax solo, remain live showstoppers.) So the Stones declared credibility in the dance circuit without sacrificing their hard-rock reputation. Though the anti-love "Beast of Burden" and the stylishly slow "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" continue to rack up the most airplay, the obscurities stand up surprisingly well. Worth replaying: Keith Richards's rickety rocker "Before They Make Me Run." --Steve Knopper

Amazon.com

Few rock stars have played in the intersection of real life, image, and fans' imaginations as smartly (and comically) as Mick Jagger does on Some Girls. With the Stones again running at top pace, Jagger aims his gimlet eye at his and the boys' gossip-column lives (the Chuck Berryish "Respectable," the archly blues-wailing title track), his collapsing marriage (where was Bianca when Mick's pals were trying to hook him up with the "Puerto Rican girls who're just dyin' to meetchoo?) and the mores and modes of New York society in the Studio 54 era (practically everything here). Slot in Keith's lament "Before They Make Me Run," and this is one of the greatest Stones albums. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Rock N Roll ! .......2007-07-12

Some Girls, is one of the greatest Rock n roll cds. The Stones rock the late 70s with some of their best guitar. Lies, Some Girls, Respectable and When The Whip Comes Down are all great Rock n roll. Far Away Eyes is the only country its lighter than the great stones country. Miss You is a great song great sax solo from Mel Collins and Hamonica from Sugar Blue. Some Girls is one of the stones Five best a great guitar based Rock n Roll cd from The Rolling Stones.

5 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) TOP OF THE LINE ROLLING STONES ! (could have been their best with a little more effort) .......2007-04-24

Some Girls (1978) is a very good album on the strength of the funky Miss You, the rocking When the Whip Comes Down, Keith Richards' Before They Make Me Run, punk influenced Shattered, tougue-in-cheek country Far Away Eyes, the semi-soul ballad Beast of Burden, the respectable Respectable, and the tell-it-like-it-is attitude of Some Girls. All Rolling Stones classics, every one of them as good as any other Rolling Stones classic. Just My Imagination and Lies are just so bad they almost ruin the whole thing, and sort of block the flow of this otherwise great album. Whose idea was it cover this Temptations classic, anyway? This sounds like the band was warming up or doing a sound check, recorded it, and put it on the album. Lies is it's twin. If they had replaced those two with songs that matched the quality of the others, this could have been the best album the Rolling Stones had ever recorded. As it is, I rate it a solid 4.5 stars, and recommend it, because it has some of The Stones' best songs.

5 out of 5 stars the last great stones album........2007-03-30

1978. the last great stones album. i happen to think (unlike many others) that they've done some very good stuff since then, but this is definitely the end of the line for greatness in their discography. "just my imagination," "repectable," "before they make me run," which is about as good a thing as keith richards ever did, and "beast of burden" are all classics. mick jagger's voice is brimming with personality here (instead of falling into a caricature of himself, which sometimes has happened in these later years). keith and ron wood splatter the recording with great guitar licks. and every song is strong to great. a wonderful piece of rock and roll. come back, boys. dylan did it. you can too. i know that you can.

This has always been one of my favorite Stones LP's, and recently purchased it in CD form. Still love it!

Three years after the experimental and not-always-successful Come on Now Social, the Indigo Girls return to a more traditional framework with the acoustic-based Become You. A deft melding of folk, rock, and pop--and laced with Latin and soul around the edges--Become You gets to the heart of what Amy Ray (the rocking half) and Emily Saliers (the gentler half) do best: chronicle the complexities of love and socio-sexual politics from a feminist viewpoint. While the seductive and full-bodied melodies leave plenty of expanse for the duo's gauzy, hand-in-glove harmonies, the majority of the repertoire here carries an undercurrent of dissatisfaction and anxiety, whether about the outcome of a rocky love affair ("Moment of Forgiveness"), the still-extant racism in the South ("Become You"), or the ultimate fate of the Mexican women who fight for change with the Zapatistas ("Nuevas Senoritas"). Poignant, thought provoking, and beautifully crafted, with rapt attention to the interplay of instruments as well as voices, Become You finds Ray and Saliers back in top form and as relevant in 2002 as at the start of their 15-year career. --Alanna Nash

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Rocks.......2002-11-07

This album is one of my favorite girls albums. I love the fast shuffles they use. And the sequenced of fast, slow, fast, slow is nice.

5 out of 5 stars From a rabid IG fan.......2002-06-23

Great album, nice in concert, I'm giving it a ten. Nice to hear the acoustical side again. Still some bluegrass influences, still some harder driving guitar, but better poetry and more fingerstylings from Emily. Buy it if you liked Rites of Passage. Which I know you did!

      5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Blend.......2002-04-26

I confess that I am a late bloomer where the Indigo Girls are concerned...so Become You is the first album I've bought as a fan. Boy what a start! There isn't a song that I truly dislike, though I do love some more than others.

Emily's poety is golden, and I find her introspective songs thought provoking and wonderful in their depth and mood. Amy's songs are much more catchy, with lyrics that stick in your head for days. Their blend of styles and emotional states keeps this album moving forward so that you can listen to it over and again, not getting tired of it.

I've been listening to this album almost constantly since I recieved it, still discovering what my favorite song is...so far there's a tie between Collecting You and Starkville.

*chuckle* If only my other problems were so wonderfully hard to resolve.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this CD for the bonus disk!.......2002-04-18

Buy this CD for the bonus disk! For me, the Indigo Girls have always been about the lyrics. Yes, the harmonies are wonderful, but it is how these harmonies work with the winding, twisting, turning journey of the lyrics that make their music stand out. I'm not sure that the IGs will ever again have the consistent journey-type lyrics like they did in the early years.

The album "Become You" does have some of the old fire, but the best four lyrics are found on the bonus disk in amy's solo "Laramie" ("tolerance it ain't acceptance"). The bonus version of "Strakville" is soulful, and the bonus version of "She's Saving Me" is nice as well. Get "Become You," enjoy it, enjoy the bonus disk, but definitely hang on to your collection of 1980's and early 90's IGs.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best.......2002-04-07

Although I enjoy this album more and more every time I listen to it, I can definately say it is not my favorite Indigo Girls album. "Moment of Forgiveness" starts the album off with a bang. It's the best track on the CD. "Yield", "Bitter Root", "Starkville" and "She's Saving Me" are also great tracks. The rest of the songs are growing on me, but they don't seem to have the power that most Indigo Girl songs do. They don't capture my attention right off the bat, but at the same time I don't feel compelled to skip to the next track.
Overall, I'd say if you're an Indigo Girls fan buy this CD. You may not love it as much as the rest but you'll love it nonetheless.
