What does a wildly successful purveyor of `80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you're Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band's ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn't let their band's lukewarm `90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ's songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they're seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track's sarcastic riposte to the '04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula--the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad "I Am" can't overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics-it's also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan ("Last Man Standing," the acoustic idealism of "Bells of Freedom"), the hard-edged "I Want to Live" or a winning duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles, "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Bon Jovi may deliver a sonically burnished triumph here by largely going back to the future--yet does it with one ear crucially cocked towards the anxious energy of the recent past. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!!!!.......2007-06-22

Their best stuff ever!!!! Great sound, awesome lyrics! Welcome to Wherever You Are - their best written song ever. I Am, I Want to be Loved, Have a Nice Day, Story of My Life, Bells of Freedom are excellent too! Giddy up!

5 out of 5 stars Have A Nice Day.......2007-06-21

"Now There's the Band - They really Play" Great album and Superb Concert. You guys ROCK!

2 out of 5 stars Morph from Ork.......2007-06-17

Hints of a country band realized.....That said Bon Jovi brings you.....Lost Highway. There have always been overtures towards country music from JBJ from Wanted: Dead or Alive, to The Blaze of Glory soundtrack. You knew, however, that they would be followed up with a Bad Medicine or 99 In The Shade. It is becoming apparent, as they age, that they will rock less and croon more..... Sad but true. JBJ's Slippery When Wet voice abandoned him years ago. He's learned to pick his spots, like an aging fastball pitcher. But....he is from Jersey so...I like him....I'll just listen to SWW and NJ more! Keppin the Faith!

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-06-10

First I must say that the last review is uncalled for. I guess you are just jealous about the Penguins AND Bon Jovi.

This cd is defiantly worth every penny! It's a must have for every Bon Jovi fan!

1 out of 5 stars SUCKY BAND.......2007-06-09

I hate fricking Bon Jovi more then Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby combined. I would like to take a crane and give them a wedgie so huge in their tight leather purple pants that it rips their anuses in two.

More than four decades after its Broadway debut, the Roundabout Theatre's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade is a glorious showcase for soprano Audra McDonald, and an eloquent statement for an underrated and neglected work. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, 110 in the Shade tells the story of a Texas town stuck in a blistering heat wave. Lizzie (McDonald), the daughter of a local widower (Broadway veteran and TV star John Cullum), has resisted all suitors, including the sheriff (Christopher Innvar), until a potential huckster named Starbuck (Steve Kazee) arrives in town promising to bring rain ("The Rain Song"). Just like Marian the librarian, Lizzie thinks she sees right through the scam ("You're Not Fooling Me"). McDonald shines in her solos ("Love, Don't Turn Away," "Old Maid"), but Cullum, Innvar, and Kazee also get their moments either in duets with McDonald ("A Man and a Woman," "Simple Little Things," "Is It Really Me?") or by themselves. 110 in the Shade is obscure compared to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's most famous work, The Fantasticks--none of its songs ever entered the popular culture like "Try to Remember"--but it's a beautiful, evocative score that is tailor-made for McDonald's rich voice. It's also much more sumptuous than The Fantasticks, even in Jonathan Tunick's pared-down, Tony-nominated orchestrations. (Also nominated were McDonald, Cullum, lighting designer Christopher Akerlind, and the show itself for Best Revival of a Musical.) P.S. Classics puts out its usual first-rate package, with color photos, introduction by Peter Filichia, synopsis, and libretto. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cast Album.......2007-07-13

Saw a number from this show on the Tony Awards and ordered it immediately. Was not disappointed. The whole album is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous recording of a terrific score.......2007-07-12

This is simply the best recording of 110 In The Shade, a sadly neglected show by the composer and lyricist of The Fantasticks. It's a far superior score to The Fantasticks, but the original show didn't enjoy a long run on Broadway. Listen to the original broadway cast and I think you can hear why. The original cast sounds pallid in comparison to the cast on this terrific recording led by Audra MacDonald, who seems to have finally found a great part for herself. The supporting cast does not disappoint and the orchestra plays brightly. The only competition to this set is a British recording (now out of print) with cast that featured Karen Ziemba. That's a good set but Audra MacDonald's performance makes this recording the definitive version.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite show.......2007-07-12

Oh wow! The music in this show is beautiful and fun. The cast is loaded with amazing voices with Audra McDonald shining above all. Her "Raunchy" number is outstanding and keeps a grin on your face from beginning to end. I've always loved the "Rainmaker" play and the music, for me, just makes it even better. Both male leads have voices that could melt a maid's heart and I'm just glad it's not me having to choose between the two!

3 out of 5 stars It's not 110%.......2007-07-05

The CD is well produced and Audra McDonald is wonderful, but most of the music sounds dated and old fashioned. Maybe that's because the show is dated and old fashioned.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2007-07-05

I saw this recently on Broadway, and it was an incredibly compelling show. Who knew? I had never heard of it. Audra sounds absolutely magnificent on this cast recording. Her songs alone make it a worthwhile purchase. Add great supporting singers and fun orchestrations, and you have a memorable album to add to your collection.

One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.

1 out of 5 stars zero stars.......2005-11-13

One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09

I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.

5 out of 5 stars not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14

This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

Album Description

One of the most immediately recognizable voices in all of contemporary music, Michael McDonald's signature sound fuses rock, R&B, soul, and gospel. As he evolved onward from his formative days as a backup singer for Steely Dan, McDonald's artistry bridged the gap between jazzy blue-eyed soul and and chart-topping pop rock, earning him superstardom both as lead vocalist/keyboardist for the Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist. Spanning 1976 to the present, this hit-packed new compilation spotlights his inimitable baritone on 19 timeless songs that will have you believing from the very first minute.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you're a Michael McDonald fan............2007-06-26

There are a few "BEST OF MICHAEL MCDONALD" CDs out there, but if I were to choose just one of his "Greatest hits Albums", then this CD would be the one. This CD is recorded beautifully and Michael's voice comes through smoothly. The songs are his best known hits,--- all mixed wonderfully.

5 out of 5 stars a must-have collection.......2007-05-14

I've been a fan of Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers for years, but have resisted buying CDs because I really only *love* 2 or 3 songs off each album. I'd just about resigned myself to buying the MP3s and burning my own disk when I stumbled across this album. This collection is really the best of the best, including McDonald's earliest songs with the Doobies (all the ones you wanted!) all the way up to his latest solo releases. I even discovered a few new favorites from his solo years. Album notes are great, with stories from McDonald about how he came to write each song, and what collaborations with Patti LaBelle, James Ingram, and Carly Simon were like. If you're only going to own one album, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Collection.......2006-11-06

Michael McDonald is, and always has been great to listen to. Driving in your car, out for the evening, or with someone you love, he's my choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sampler of both the Doobie Bros and Solo careers!.......2006-09-20

This 2005 "Ultimate Collection" is true to it's word in the fact that it compiles two worlds onto one great CD: One is Michael McDonald's solo material and other other his former band that he was lead singer of The Doobie brothers in the 1970s. This isn't a replacement of McDonald's solo 'best of' CD "The Very Best of" from a few years before. Many of the most well-known songs from McDonald and crew appear on here including a track from his most recent release "Motown Two" and a bizarre remix of "Open The Door" from his "Blue Obsession" CD. At 77 minutes, this is a very good investment in introducing someone to his music.

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2006-09-01

I bought this because the everyone kept saying that Taylor Hicks was a new Michael McDonald and then they talk about his DVD on "40-year old virgin". It's funny how different forms of media link together. In this case, it was a good thing because I love this CD and the cover. Michael McDonald sure is a silver fox!

Amazon.com essential recording

The epic sweep of Ragtime is captured in its opening prologue, a nine-minute kaleidoscope of fictional characters mingling with historical figures from the early 20th century as originally captured in E.L. Doctorow's sprawling novel. As the story continues, we meet pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Brian Stokes Mitchell) and his child's mother, Sarah (Audra McDonald), who has been taken in by a respectable family (including Marin Mazzie as Mother). Parallel story lines of the Latvian immigrant Tateh (Peter Friedman), the entertainer Evelyn Nesbit (Lynnette Perry), and even Harry Houdini (Jim Corti) and Emma Goldman (Judy Kaye) eventually mingle and merge. Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on This Island) mix marches, cakewalks, and of course ragtime to create a rich, compelling score, including Sarah's song to her baby, "Your Daddy's Son," her soaring duet with Coalhouse, "Wheels of a Dream," Mother's self-revealing "Back to Before," and numerous set pieces, all performed by a perfect cast. Ragtime was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 1998, with wins for McDonald, original score, book, and orchestration. The CD also includes an eight-minute symphonic suite conducted by Paul Gemignani and a booklet with photos, full lyrics, and a history of how the score was written. Tragic, touching, and ultimately triumphant, Ragtime is an American classic. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of an excellent show.......2007-05-26

I highly recommend this item, especially if you're looking for a new favorite musical. Buy this 2 CD set, instead of the 1 CD version because 1) the 1 CD version is merely a concept album, and the final show underwent numerous changes before taking its final form, 2) In order to fit on 1 CD some of the best music of the show is cut from the other version, and 3) the 2 CD version contains enough narration and plot songs that if you've never seen the show you have a very good idea of what it's about.

Unlike many other cast albums, "Ragtime" doesn't contain any clunker songs. Every one is either catchy, innovative, heart wrenching, or outright fun.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime.......2007-05-15

Got the CD after seeing the show, and have listened again and again with increasing appreciation for the show, and the novel, which I re-read after many years.
"It's somehow haunting me . . ."

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Inspirational Cast Recording! .......2006-09-13

This 2-disc set is the most beautiful recording you will ever come across. The sound is perfect and it contains all of the songs from the musical, unlike the 'Highlights' CD. The singers are brilliant and they play their roles perfectly. Brian Stokes Mitchell is a wonderful and intense Coalhouse, and Peter Friedman is a beautiful voice as Tateh. Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald co-star as Mother and Sarah, and Mark Jacoby is a inspirational and powerful Father. Lynette Perry and Jim Corti are halarious as Evelyn Nesbit and Harry Houndini. Some of the best songs on this recording are:

Prolouge: Ragtime
Journey On
Success
Gettin Ready Rag
New Music
Wheels of a Dream
Justice
Till We Reach That Day
Coalhouse's Silioquy
Coalhouse Demands
What a Game(halarious!)
Atlantic City
Our Children
He Wanted to Say
Look What You've Done
Epilouge

This recording also includes a bonus track: The Ragtime Symphonic Suite, which contains the tunes to the main songs in Ragtime. Like the other songs, this track is wonderful. If you are looking for a recording that will make you laugh, cry, and inspire you all at once, this is the perfect buy for you!

5 out of 5 stars In the Age of Sondheim, this piece stands beside his work and doesn't pale at all........2006-06-18

"Ragtime" utilzes so many different elements. From a compositional stand point, the music begins as does the story. We have three different classes of people and three different styles of music. As the musical proceeds and the classes begin to mingle and then clash, the music does the same thing. This is a subtle element of brilliance; most audience memebers wouldn't catch this. This piece comes as close to opera as does "Sweeney Todd". The recording includes a Orchestra Suite at the end that is so well written that it stands beautifully on it's own and doesn't sound like a last minute Overture. Each character is well defined by musical motif. The cast is outstanding with the very best singers and actors available to Broadway and Lincoln Center. Marin Mazzie sings the remarkable "Back To Before" and Audra MacDonald "Your Daddy's Hands" making them songs that will stand as monuments to theatre the way that "People" does for Streisand, "Rose's Turn" For Merman, "Hello Dolly" for Carol Channing. The musical skill of the orchestra is remarkable, whether it's the pianist, the clarinet sounding like an Eastern European standard. Or the remarkable first violin who climbes up a scale to bring a piece together at the end for a pitch so beautifully played at the top of the instrument's range. The songs themselves are spectacular; each piece develops and we do hear character development themes; each repeated motif in a song has thickened and developed along with the character, so we never ever feel as though the score was written hastily. "Ragtime" is a musical that defies the old line, "Theatre in New York is Dead."

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime, Ragtime , Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime!!!!!.......2006-01-27

When I was 11 I got the oppertunity to see Ragtime on Broadway, but back then I really didn't get how deep and beautiful the score was and is. Back then I just thought it was boring and I couldn't wait to leave so I could be that much closer to seeing the Lion King (Which is also an amazing musical, but anyway).
Now that I'm older I truly see how amazing the score is and that it really deserved the Tony. This recording is also inspired, from the first 8 min sweeping introduction into the show, to the it's reprise at the end almost every song is wonderful. Beautifully written and preformed.
Some of my favorites are:
Prolouge
Goodbye My Love
Journy On
The Crime of the Century
Success
His Name was Coalhouse Walker
Henry Ford
Nothing Like the City
Your Daddy's Son
New Music
The Night That Goldman Spoke at Union Square
Gliding
Justice
President
Till We Reach that Day
Coalhouse Soliloquy
Coalhouse Demands
What A Game
Atlantic City
Bufalo Nickle Photoplay INC
Sarah Brown Eyes
He Wanted to Say
Epolouge

I wish that I Could have appreciated this score/show the first time is saw it cause then I wouldn't have wasted time missing these songs. Buy this album , you will not be sorry.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Martina's why I bought it.......2007-05-14

And her rendition of "How Great Thou Art" is worth the price of the CD to me. I have mixed feelings about the rest of it. I didn't care much for most of the male voices. While they are sensitive and thoughtful and generally reverent, which I do appreciate, I still prefer more traditional, resonant, powerful male voices, such as Alan Jackson's on his gospel CD. I will listen to this one occasionally, if only to hear Martina, but Precious Memories is still my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Why are so many "inspired by" recordings not truly inspired by the source material?.......2007-04-07

I wonder why so many "inspired by" recordings are not produced in response to the material that supposedly serves as the basis for their inspiration. In the case of movies, why not let the artists view the film prior to its release, and let them craft songs built around scenes, themes or the ideas presented. There may be some reason why this isn't done--it may be hard to write enough original songs, or maybe it's difficult to let the artists see a film prior to its release. If the problem is the latter, why couldn't those contributing songs be given something in written form? It may not be as inspiring, but it at least provides a starting point for creating a song.

This is not to knock Music Inspired by the Motion Picture Amazing Grace. It's a fine collection of hymns by a variety of talented artists. It seems a shame though that only the song "Amazing Grace" performed by Chris Tomlin has any direct connection with the movie. John Newton, the author of the hymn, had a relationship with the key figure in the film, William Wilberforce.

Tomlin does what many of the artists do with these hymns, and a little more. In addition to a different arrangement, he takes the risk of adding some new verses to a classic song, and pulls it off admirably. Nichole Nordeman does the same with equally impressive results on "Just As I Am." Tomlin's subdued playing and instrumentation reinvents and adds a touch of grace to one of the most popular songs of all time.

Jeremy Camp's strong masculine voice is the perfect complement for music that thunders around the verses of "It Is Well." It's a strong performance augmented by the background vocals of his wife Adie.

This is one of several remarkable duets, the next featuring Shawn McDonald & Bethany Dillon on "All Creatures of Our God & King." It starts off with an ethereal vibe but the vocals get a little cluttered with the programming that ends the song. Another song that suffers from programming is "Fairest Lord Jesus" by Natalie Grant.

It's a challenge for artists to take such familiar songs and make them sound fresh. For the most part, these interpretations succeed in making these hymns sound new. The best results here are the songs that are acoustic and less complicated like the title song.

Another brilliant example is "Rock of Ages" by David Crowder & Marty Stuart. It begins and ends with a delightful acoustic instrumental that sounds like some wonderful Christmas recording. David Crowder continues to record impressive music.

The medley "My Jesus I Love Thee / `Tis So Sweet" by Bart Millard (of Mercy Me) starts and ends with the sounds of an accordion. The music is a relaxed blend of contemporary and pop sounds. Though the title of the song does not show this as a duet, the voice of Derek Webb is unmistakable. He is a great addition to one of the best songs on the recording.

A light country version of "How Great Thou Art" by Martina McBride is also excellent and closes the recording.

Two black gospel songs are included, but with orchestration and more production, they don't fit as well with the many songs that lean toward acoustic pop or rock. They are well done and they do add variety, but like the songs that make use of programming, they feel a little out of place.

This is a strong collection of hymns done in a contemporary style. It won't appeal as much to those who favor more traditional renderings.

2 out of 5 stars Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy!.......2007-04-06

With the exception of the first and last tracks ("Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art"), I would have to say that the balance of the songs on this CD are limp and unenthusiastic....better to go right to iTunes or some other music download site and just get those two tracks!!

I think the CD was made with good intent, but unless you want something to fall asleep to, this album doesn't seem to reflect any of the joy or enthusiasm that I associate with Christian music or Christianity itself. Perhaps it was just that the songs were sung "quietly", but I did not find them to be infused with much in the way of "inspiration", and I got none from listening to them.......

Far better, I think, to go buy something like the soundtrack to the actual movie "Amazing Grace", which contains beautiful and atmospheric compositions, and which deserves to be nominated for an Academy award....

Another option would be to buy the soundrack to either of the "Sister Act" movies (in addition to my suggestion in the preceding paragraph), they are much more lively, joyful, celebratory and creative than this!

Any of those options will leave you more uplifted and inspired than this CD left me...I absolutely LOVED "Amazing Grace", and would strongly urge anyone looking for a GOOD movie to see the film that "inspired the music" on this CD.

Seeing the actual film will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful; that good men can still accomplish great things, no matter how many people are on the "other side" of what they are working against!!

[Hint: I understand that that WONDERFUL rendition of "Amazing Grace" with the bagpipes, drums and other instruments that plays at the end of the movie is available on iTunes as a "bonus track", and it is DEFINITELY NOT TO BE MISSED!!!]

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and beautiful.......2007-03-29

I bought this CD after hearing the updated version of Amazing Grace, the title and theme song for the movie. WOW - I was so impressed that a classic hymn could be modernized without losing it's impace and simplicity. I had doubts about the rest of the songs, but was soooo wrong - happily!) All the songs on this CD are beautiful - classic hymns, updated beautifully. Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars AMAZING CD!! .......2007-03-27

Great traditional songs I know by artists I love!! Only downfall is the original version of "Amazing Grace" isnt on the CD, only Chris Tomlin's amazing version..

Playing off of Elvis Presley's 1959 album 50 Million Elvis Presley Fans Can't Be Wrong, right down to the gold-lame suits the quartet dons on the cover, stalwart rockers Bon Jovi make a strong case that they're one of the true populist bands of their era with a box set that serves up dozens of previously unheard and seldom heard offerings. Designed as a heaping 20-year anniversary feast for insatiable fans, the four-disc/bonus DVD collection is surprisingly vital and consistent, considering that just about everything included was initially either rejected or related to B-sides and soundtracks. The high quality of these castoffs is attributable to the band's habit of preparing dozens of tracks for each album and cutting loose strong compositions that didn't fit with the theme of the completed product. Thus, some stylistic stretches were left in the vaults (check out the Southside Johnny-style r&b of "Love Ain't Nothing But a Four Letter Word"). Bon Jovi fans will find be delighted by this collection, and even skeptics may find themselves reconsidering these Jersey survivors. --Steven Stolder

2 out of 5 stars Yes, they can be. They are........2007-01-21

For fans, I suppose this would be a rather big delight; for non-fans, it's nothing that will turn you on to the band from Jersey. They had some okay, cheesy hits in the '80s - but listening to some of their modern songs from this collection proves how completely out of touch they are nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars For any Jovi fan..........2007-01-04

1 out of 5 stars there's no mistaking his voice.......2007-03-04

I first got to listen to this album from a cousin around the beginning of last year and was wondering at first who the guy was, until I put the cd on and thought HELL, there's no mistaking this guys voice from The Doobie Brothers. All I can say is that if you are a big Motown fan like I am, you will not be disappointed....let'sjust say that I can't think of anyone that can pull off a classic Marvin Gaye " Heard it Through the Grapevine" like Michael McDonald. All the songs are great but my personal favs are " Heard it Through the Grapevine", "Since I Lost My Baby", " You Are Everything". Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars MICHAEL MCDONALD WAS BORN TO DO THIS MUSIC.......2006-09-25

I bought this CD when it came out 3 years ago. I didn't go to the store with that intent. Knowing I like a lot of Motown music and remembering Michael McDonald's smooth voice from the 80's I thought it seemed interesting. 3 years later, it's my favorite CD I own. Michael's voice can be chilling. "All in Love is Fair" and "Since I Lost My Baby" are my faves. Treat yourself.....

1 out of 5 stars He should be ashamed of himself........2006-08-30

I can't believe he's trying to steal these Motown classics and sing them in his funny little fake voice. I love the original Motown songs and this is just silly, sad and pathetic. He really should be ashamed of himself.

Blue-eyed soul crooner Michael McDonald gave his career a much-needed shot in the arm with 2003's Motown, a commercially well-received collection that matched the one-time Doobie Brother and '80s solo star's rich vocals with songs from Hitsville's peak. One year later, McDonald again delves into the Motown bag to come up with another 14 selections from such giants as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson. McDonald is a distinctive enough vocalist to bring something to these classics, as tough as that task is. Unfortunately, the uninspired production and stilted musicianship keeps the likes of "I Was Made to Love Her," "Tracks of My Tears," and Nowhere to Run" from being anything more than dubious offerings to McDonald partisans. Motown became a hit factory as much on the strength of its foot soldiers as it did its commanding stars, but producer Simon Cline employs thin and lethargic backing tracks where some of the most inspired pop playing in history once stood. Return to the Motown source to hear inspired pop soul music. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Little Soul from a big heart.......2007-01-06

It's Michaels second album of Motown numbers...he knows his job an is a living legend. The first one could not keep you on your chair, this one is more introvert, non commercial but more intensive... and it grows everytime I listen too it.

5 out of 5 stars Happily I do know talent when I hear it as well as friends..........2006-11-29

I grew up listening to the many singers and groups that made these songs so outstanding. To come along now, as Michasl has, and sing the songs from those late 50's through the early 70's artists he'd better be good!!
Michael not only honors them but he puts his own God given talent into each note that is played, every word he sings.
Michael surrounds himself with the best musicans and back up singers. Motown #1 was a hard act to follow but he has done another great job on this album as well.
Thank you Michael, Jp... PS,We miss you in Sants Barbara...

4 out of 5 stars Good but not his best.......2006-07-27

Michael McDonald is an awesome singer and performer and I enjoy his music very much.
Without going into detail, I liked some of the songs on this album but there are allot of other Motown songs that his voice would compliment even better.
Maybe on Motown 3.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of it!.......2006-06-28

You will find yourself singing along with the music time and again. If you grew up in the 60's or 70's, this will take you back in time, and yet, there's something about it that's keeps you in the present--perhaps the voice and presentation of Michael McDonald. This is not the Dooby Brothers' Michael McDonald. Nothing about this CD keeps you "Runnin." It keeps you listening and wanting more of where it came from.

1 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-05-16

I can't wait until Michael puts out Motown Three, so then I can hear more half-hearted, unoriginal covers playing on my work radio! I'm biting my tongue to keep from swearing, but this man deserves every profane word I can imagine! Michael McDonald's voice is not good! In fact, it is on par with a karaoke night! The brown-eyed soul man needs to stop being so full of himself, and if anything, write a song of his own again! There's nothing I love more than seeing washed up 70's artists like Michael McDonald and Rod Stewart recycle old songs and push them on the contemporary mainstream! Thank you for making my ears bleed, Michael!

Audra McDonald may well have the best voice and interpretative skills of all current musical-theater singers. This album, though, is oddly disappointing. McDonald's gorgous soprano is as pure as ever, but her feisty attitude and sly sense of humor are less in evidence than on previous recordings (just check out "A Little Bit in Love" on a studio recording of Wonderful Town). On this pared-down sounding outing, the tunes mix pop-rock songwriters both contemporary (John Meyer, Rufus Wainwright, Nellie McKay) and old-school (Neil Young, Laura Nyro, Randy Newman--though Dusty Springfield's version of Newman's "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" remains the definitive one), along with composers from the artier side of musical theater (Adam Guettel, Ricky Ian Gordon). Things start off great with a haunting take on Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello's "God Gave Me Strength." Highlights include a poker-faced version of McKay's parody of 1950s matrimonial bliss, "I Wanna Get Married" and Wainwright's tango-ish "Damned Ladies." But Doug Petty's arrangements and production are too monochromatic, and the songs quickly meld into each other--typically, Nyro's "Tom Cat Goodbye" feels a bit flaccid. Someone please get McDonald a huge orchestra for her next outing. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Audra McDonald's Build A Bridge recreates a remarkable program of songs she premiered to great acclaim at the premiere of the American Songbook Series for Jazz at Lincoln Center. As the album title suggests, she combines material from precious young songwriters like Rufus Waiwright, Nellie McKay and even John Mayer with the work of frequent collaborator and Broadway innovator Adam Guettel, Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach, Laura Nyro, and Randy Newman.

4 out of 5 stars Nyro.......2007-03-04

Not my favorite album of hers, but the Laura Nyro songs alone are worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Always an originator.......2007-01-28

I have been mostly a fan of Ms. McDonald's Theatre music so this CD filled with pop music selections took some getting use to. But as usual I have been won over by Audra's beautiful voice and musicianship. Her individual style and fearless fresh approach to music making is rare and very special. She has the best voice and technique of any singer singing Broadway and popular music today. She is never afraid to take on a classic associated with another singer( Dusty Springfield's "I think its going to rain today", by Laura Nyro) But let this CD live in your CD player for a while and you'll find yourself finding new joys in it with each new listen.

4 out of 5 stars A nice departure.......2007-01-12

I truly admire Audra for constantly seeking new music to record. While this album is not my favorite Audra recording (Happy Songs wins that award :) it is still a very enjoyable record. Some of the tracks are sheer delight ("My Stupid Mouth" and "Wonderful You") while others just don't appeal to me ("Tom Cat" and "I Think it's Going to Rain Today") but that's to be expected whenever an artist is exploring new territory. I applaud Audra for her willingness to always seek new and varied music for her albums and will continue to be a big Audra fan!

5 out of 5 stars audra is remarkable.......2007-01-12

audra is not only a multiple tony award winner and phenomenal actress, she is a beautiful recording artist. You will not be disappointed by this CD. It is so beautiful...the best track is "my stupid mouth"...get this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Building a bridge between pop and broadway.......2007-01-12

Audra McDonald has already established herself as one of Broadway's leading artists. Whether it be her performance in Ragtime of the powerful "Daddy's Hands" or one of her beautiful albums such as "Way Back to Paradise" I have always enjoyed listening to Ms. McDonald as she fully engages a piece of music to make it a memorable experience.

This cd is no exception as she presents us with an eclectic array of music. She covers her Broadway roots with pieces by Adam Guettel and Ricky Ian Gordon, spreads into some older work from Laura Nyro and even explores pop by delving into John Mayer and Rufus Wainwright. She does a beautiful job of making each piece her own.

That said I should give you a warning. If you are strongly attached to any previous recordings of any of the pieces I am going to reiturate: she makes each piece her own. My sister is a big fan of John Mayer and didn't like the way that Ms. McDonald explored the piece. My father upon listening to both interpretations back to back wouldn't have thought that it was the same piece of music.

I would highly suggest making the investment in this cd. There is beautiful vocal work and her conviction to each piece is moving. As a music student I look to it as an example of putting yourself into the music. Once again, I warn that if you are particular to Victoria Clark's rendition of "Dividing Day" or Bette Midler's performance of "I think it's gonna rain today" (or Kermit's "Bein' Green") be well aware that Ms. McDonald is not a rubber stamp and that is what keeps bringing me back to her.
