De la gran cantidad de grupos de la invasión británica aparecidos a principios de los 60, ninguno de los competidores más serios de los Beatles (Animals, Kinks, Hollies, Stones) habían editado discos en 1963, mientras los grupos "menores" (Gerry & Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer o Freddie & The Dreamers) han caído en el olvido pese a haber tenido sus meses de fama. The Searchers pertenece a este segundo nivel de grupos y su disco debut es uno de los pocos que los fans de los Beatles pueden escuchar sin terminar decepcionados.

los 4 temas con que arranca el álbum son dinámicas piezas beat, Sweets for my Sweet y Love Potion Nº9 fueron los mayores exitos, mientras Alright y Farmer John muestran al grupo en lo que mejor hace: adaptar canciones al sonido beat, esto es imprimiéndoles velocidad y potencia instrumental, al igual que ocurre en Ain't Gonna Kiss Ya y Tricky Dicky. Por otro lado, los covers más famosos no estan al nivel de los originales o de otras versiones. Twist and Shout es particularmente plana y sin brillo, Money es un poco mejor pero no hace olvidar a ya sabemos quien, mientras Stand By Me parece haber sido hecha sólo por cumplir. La reposada Where Have All The Flowers Gone presagia el futuro sonido folk del grupo, alejándose del tono del disco.

Uno de los grandes problemas de los Searchers es su casi nula capacidad de escribir temas propios. Una vez más, estamos en 1963 y muy pocos lo hacían por entonces, pero es una de las razones que podrían explicar su poca evolución en los años siguientes. Eso se perdona en Meet The Searchers, un irregular pero buen trabajo de los primeros días del sonido Mersey, aunque el paso del tiempo no lo deje muy bien parado.

A big group in the 60's coming in on the British Invasion, they quickly establish a style of smooth haunting ballads with a double track sound that was unlike any of the other British groups.

This CD is a two of their best albums. The quality is good from the original recordings and anyone that was a Searchers fan would love this in their collection. From Love Potion #9, Magic Potion, Needles and Pins to the haunting What Have They Done to the Rain and A Tear Fell, this album is absolutely super!!

      4 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem of a songwriter's debut..........1999-02-04

      I remember Gerry Devine as a fixture on the Greenwich Village NYC folk and rock club circuit in the early 1980s. He performed with a couple of bands, always outfront as lead singer and guitarist. Of these the most notable were the Floor Models, an alternative/rootsy band before anyone had clued into this type of music. On Fire Lane, Gerry teams with the same musicians. I love the CDs beautiful mixing of Buddy Hollyesque snap in the vocals and harmonies, and Searchers or Byrds-like musical textures underneath. The songs are all good. Some notes... Anybody Else, the opener, will make you want to dance and keep repeating the track... but let the CD play. Excuses Excuses is an intriguing country-style ballad that sounds as if Philip Roth wrote the lyrics. If I Ever Get Another Chance will stay in your ear. Drop of Rain is a little ponderous, but so beautiful it doesn't matter. If the Cry Cry Cry combo cuts a reunion record, they should tap this important new songwriter.
