Customer Reviews:
Volume 1 is Far Better.......2005-10-15
Although nothing by the amazing Mr. MacKenzie gets beneath 3 stars, this release is rather disappointing. There is much duplicated material here available elsewhere that just isn't worth the price. By all means get Volume 1 and marvel at how The Associates throwaway tracks (see "A Severe Bout of Career Insecurity" with its frantic pace and Alan's foray into the "Sound of Music" piano riff!) are better than most bands best material.
Even better is the Peel Sessions mini-LP. Just amazingly over-the-top vocals and playing. What made this such an amazing band was the way they took/stole various musical forms, blended them up, and came up with a sound that still has yet to be duplicated. Not only Billy's range in his singing, but Alan Rankine was just a whirling dervish of a multi-talented instrumentalist.
While I enjoyed some of the latter day "crooning" material by Billy (and much of it makes up this LP), too often it sounded like endless rehashes of the piano riff from "Breakfast." Still, you could ddo worse, but this LP is strictly for collectors (like me. find more unreleased material please!)
