Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

The Band that Fogerty Built was truly an American phenomenon during their relatively short recording career. Each of their albums, beginning with 1969's Bayou Country, was a Top 40 hit-making machine. Willy & the Poor Boys produced two smashes--"Down on the Corner" (which is about the fictional black street group that gave the album its title) and "Fortunate Son," Fogerty's most ferocious political rant. Each LP was a concept collection of sorts, and this one was a tribute to the South, featuring two traditional standards popularized by Leadbelly as well as two instrumentals that made you swear CCR were from New Orleans rather than Oakland, California. --Bill Holdship

Great CCR record, not so great SACD.......2007-02-26

My advice? Don't waste your time spending big bucks on the SACD version of this great CCR classic. I've listened to it alongside the 20bit K2 mastered version and I actually prefer the K2 version. I've got a lot of SACD's and played both on my Sony SACD player. I can't see the purpose of this realease at all. If it comes down to money I think you will be more than happy with the K2 release. Also, the SACD is not a multi-channel release so you won't find anything new with this mix. Overall as any familar with CCR knows, this is a solid gold 5 star classic. So, any fan of great rock and roll needs to own it. Just don't waste your money on this hybrid SACD release.

Fun rock 'n' roll - not perfect, but worth your money.......2006-11-18

Yes, this IS the album with Fortunate Son, CCR's signature tune, on it. Yes, it's also got Down on the Corner, which charted a good eleven places ahead of Fortunate Son (I'm a dork for knowing that. So what?) even though the former is far better-known. These are the best songs off Willy & the Poor Boys. But most (not all, mind you) of the rest unfairly rests in the shadow of those two tracks. They actually manage to breathe new life into the oft-covered Midnight Special (which has transcended the level of "standard" at this point), thanks to them very much making it their own. It Came Out of the Sky is pretty damn funny; Don't Look Now, a great love song; Side o' the Road, one of their best instrumentals; and Effigy, easily their best extended song. How'd all of these songs disappear? Okay, their cover of Leadbelly's Cotton Fields is far from essential; Poor Boy Shuffle's a bad instrumental; Feelin' Blue, an overlong jam. But this is a solid record overall!

As far as I'm concerned, 'Willy & The Poor Boys' represent the very peak of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Simply because they came from classics such as 'Bayou Country' and 'Green River', and even after this album, they would continue with such immaculate collections of prime & pure rock'n'roll as 'Cosmo's Factory' and 'Pendulum'. 'Willy & The Poor Boys' then, is not just the last classic before a sudden fall in quality, but the third in a row of brilliant recordings, that would continue after it, & therefor, it is as far from failure as one gets.

The opener, 'Down On The Corner', is arguably CCR's best song ever. Definently, it was the one that got me hooked on Creedence in the first place, and, together with 'Proud Mary', it seems to be their best known song (it's usually those two that even hiphop-kids here in Denmark know the lyrics to). Anyway, it is a perfectly catching pop song without any of the weaknesses or disposabilities that usually come with too catchy pop. A song well worth the price of the entire Creedence catalogue on its own!

'It Came Out Of The Sky' is one of the most rocking Creedence songs, a great rockabilly/rock'n'roll classic, & arguably a genuine Creedence classic too. The following track, a cover of Leadbelly's 'Cotton Fields' sounds as much as the original Creedence material, that one comes to think of it as one of their own - which is perhaps the greatest triumph of most of CCR's covers, the way they blend into the original material without wreaking havoc.
The jugband blues of 'Poorboy Shuffle' and the middle of the road, but at the same time very very strange 'Feelin' Blue', are both Fogerty originals, strong songs that carry the album on with pride

But it is with 'Fortunate Son' that the next true Creedence classic arrives. As strong as anything Fogerty has ever written, this light rocker is yet another amazing item in the vein of 'Green River' and the later 'Run Through The Jungle'.
The utterly gorgeous love song, 'Don't Look Now', is a somewhat overlooked gem, absolutely as good as the previous track, & thus the third invaluable jewel on the album. It is followed by Creedence's take on the traditional 'The Midnight Special', which, like 'Cotton Fields', works extremely well, becoming a Creedence stample, without betraying its original form.
The album ends with two more strong Fogerty tracks, 'Side O' The Road' and 'Effigy', not as strong as the three classics on the album, but easily strong enough to bring an end to this most outstanding record, that only becomes more amazing when you discover that Creedence put out five of these undying gemstones over the course of two years...

The first album of theirs you buy, the last you stop listening to... oh, you'll never stop listening to it!

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.

Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.

The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.

This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.

I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.

I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.

if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

Album Description

Resilient electro-pop music. The songs are catchy as hell and rise to meet all the duo's snobby music standards. With sing-along-when-you-think-you're-alone types of refrains, it's as if the oldies station on the car stereo is playing at the same time as the urban party music station, with the occasional interfering sonic sway of an '80s keyboard refrain. It's the sound of feeling fun and desperate and bravely romantically unsuccessful all at once. Easy listening for difficult feelings.

Big L's Debut Is A Classic.......2007-04-10

BIG L was an amazing MC he had good lyrics teaching you about street knowledge this album is a classic to me THE SOURCE magazine gave it 4 MIC'S a near classic but to me it is his lyrics are amazing BIG L had HARLEM on lock some of my favorite tracks on the album are MVP & STREET STRUCK & actually at the time a young JAY-Z got his first debut on DA GRAVEYARD amazing lyrics good beats what else could you want from a hip/hop album? BUY IT you won't be disappointed.

please, don't hate on me for just giving this 3 stars.. i'm a huge d.i.t.c. fan and i got love for L (rest in peace). but this album isn't really that great. L is a ill lyricist far above your average, but the freestyle flow and lack of concept in many songs makes me kind of bored. also i don't think the beats are what they could be. you can't even compare them to the beats on the true ditc-classics: funky technician, word life, runaway slave, awakening, stunt blunts & hiphop etc.
and let's be real about it... this lp isn't even top 10 from 1995.
doe ore die, krs-one, dah shinin, livin proof, liquid swords, ob4cl, legal drug money, good fellas, labcabin california, 2000, soul food are all much better albums.

Amazing Flow...Amazing Lyrics (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2006-12-06

Harlem's own Big L was one of the most amazing non commercialized rappers in the game. He wasn't trying to be a star or a big named rapper, just a freestyle legend. And let me tell you, he can spit some shhhh off the top of his dome (if you get a chance look for an album called "Harlem's Greatest: A Freestyle History"). I first heard of this guy on the Music Choice Channel when the song "All Luv" by D.I.T.C. was being played one night. He didn't have the best verse in the song (outshinned by Lord Finesse) but he grabbed my attention.

Listening to this album, I understood where Big L's style came from and how he elevated it. "Put It On" was a dope single and a way to start off the album. My favorite song on the entire album would have to be "No Endz, No Skinz", a song about women out for a mans money. A lot of these songs through out the album he would talk about murder ("All Black") and living the inner city life ("Danger Zone"). Lyrically he was good to the point where you would hit the rewind button a few times ("I wouldn't give a chick 10 cents to put cheese on a whopper"). But at the same time he kinda overdid it to have people like "what the hell?" ("If I catch AIDS, I'ma start raping b*****s").

Guest appearances came in packs in two songs "8 Iz Enough" (I forgot what televison show that came from) and "Da Graveyard". In many songs there are a lot of no names at the time, with the exception of Lord Finesse on the latter song. But today you can find Killa Cam (Cam'ron) in the song "8 Iz Enough" and a younger Jay-Z in the song "Da Graveyard".

Production wise is cool. I know Diamond D and Showbiz did a few tracks on here. So you have that D.I.T.C flavor throughout this album.

Flaws are not that many. Some people might can't take the intensity of Big L's lyrics. But hey that was his style of rapping. And maybe "I Don't Understand It" and "Fed Up With The BS" might fall under skip material. Other than that this is one album that is a perfect album to your collection (and at the price listed, you CANNOT beat it!). It's sad he was taken away from us and hip hop due to an act of violence (the day after Valentines Day, 1999). There was reports that he was going to sign under Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella records before he was killed. I keep saying I'm going to buy "The Big Picture" but haven't gotten around to it. I always wondered what would happen if he ever blew up and became a big named artist here in 2006. Unfortunately that question will never be answered.

Big L is the best rapper that has ever lived. No one has been able to even come near him, not Biggie not 2 Pac no one. Buy anyone of his albums and you will never listen to Chingy, Ludacis, 50 Cent. All those guys are bubble gum rappers or popstars. THIS IS RAP!

Now THAT'S what I call Country!!!.......2006-07-27

Very few people believe that I am a fan of country music because I'm rarely ever found listening to it. That's mainly because I find so much country music nowadays unimaginative, redundant and just plain boring. One paradigm I have long held onto is that great country music (just like great blues music) sounds like something you could imagine playing yourself on a back porch.

There are probably music purists who could pigeonhole my tastes into one aspect of country music (bluegrass or hillbilly, say), but I contend that my tastes are simply for Country Music.

With all of that said, it seems a shame to say that one of my all-time favorite country albums comes from a conglomeration of members from bands often categorized and punk and rockabilly. X and The Blasters are also bands I am quite fond of, so when I found out that members of both joined together to do some old country-blues tunes and even revise a little X, I was all over that record like white on rice.

This is fun music. Too much country nowadays just isn't fun, or if it pretends to be fun, it does so with a sour pretention of acting like everyone should act this way, but The Knitters nailed an album here that has such a come-along, sing-along feel, that I feel shame that the CMAs haven't nailed a copy of this album to the procemium of every awards show as a reminder of where the REAL heart of country music lay.

This is a great collection of songs. Songs about heartache or jail sung in a way that sounds genuine, not pretend. Like true country music, or the blues, songs of despair sit next to songs of love and joy. These are the emotions of life, told through charming and direct performances. Some of my favorites here are the title track (roadkill as a metaphor for life), Walkin' Cane, and if you aren't slapping your knee during Call of the Wreckin' Ball, you just don't have a pulse.

An added note: whenever I play The Kniters' version of "Rock Island Line," my 8 year-old can't help but just dance around the kitchen table. That's my hillbilly boy!

At last! An X album I DON'T like!.......2006-02-07

Here I thought they were infallible and they go do this one-off "ner ner" music that inspires intimate thoughts regarding blood relations and livestock. I played it backwards and not only did I sober up, but my wife came back to me, my dog came back to life, my truck got fixed, the bank took the lien off my house and I bowled a perfect game!

this band is great both live and on cd. the songs get in your head and haunt you. they are all hillbilly bluegrass inspired and they mean all the more if you are a john doe and exene fan or a dave alvin fan or a fan of the 80's hollywood punk scene. Hear john and exene mention l.a. band cohorts the rhythm pigs. hear the tearful songs of broken hearts made all the more poignant by the fact that they were breaking up their long time marriage. its an incredible timeless cd. buy it.

I rememebr i had a tape of this album way back in the mid eighties so when i saw it on cd i decided to give it another try, a i was not disapponted at all. It's nice hearing a bunch of punks goin country cause what you get it's not nashville stuff but a sort of strange mix of what was later to be know as americana. Great stuff and funny too, really worth listening

You think it's one of those records that you buy to round out your collection of X and Blasters and lo and behold it is one you can't remove from rotation. Poor Little Critter of the Road, Wrecking Ball, Silver Wings are songs that immediatly come to mind when I'm driving on the highway, at a county fair, and am waiting in an airport. I've owned the vinyl since it first came out, and it's still in the stack I play every third Sunday (don't ask).

Just saw the Knitters on Jay Leno last night and they blew my mind, again, John Doe and Exene's killer vocals on top of Dave Alvin's guitar is a classic American roots sound. (I've given up Rock/Abilly/Bluegrass/Country/Blues/Ragtime/Folk distinctions because so many artists have blurred the boundaries. I think "American roots" is the best description of this genre.)

There's a softness to the sound that implies the praries, a twang that implies the south and a desert sensibility that makes you want to install it as the theme tracks to your Airstream as you drive out of Las Vegas into the desert, leaving behind the bright lights, your love, and any hope of water.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The singing is so authentic that one feels like a participant in a gospel meeting, swaying to the rhythm with the crowd. Contributing greatly to the impact is Chanticleer's guest, Yvette A. Funder. Possessor of a voice remarkable for its range, power, and flexibility, she brings to the music the empathy and authority of one born and raised in the tradition, whether leading call-and-response, engaging in improvisations that soar high above the chorus, crooning softly in meditation, or shouting in ecstasy. (She is also an active Bishop ministering to the poor and afflicted, and the founder of various social service agencies in California.) Several songs include soloists drawn from the chorus as well, most notably a tenor, a countertenor and a bass who provides a rhythmic ostinato. The program, designed for maximum variety of tempo, mood, character and texture, includes many favorite songs and spirituals, such as "Amazing Grace," "There is a Balm in Gilead," "Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child." The arrangements by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's Music Director for 20 years, are admirably simple and very good; only a few are marred by awkward modulations or overly sophisticated, Hollywood-inspired effects. Most of them are for a cappella voices. Jennings also contributes a new original composition: "Be still and Know that I'm God." On this standard red book 16-bit CD we are offered that rare and special invitation: Come now, pilgrim - take yet another good step forward in gospel praise or supplication. How can we progress in our individual and collective spiritual journeys towards whatever transcendent glories ground us, revive us, and lead us on despite life's challenges, unless we sing?. Are you having set backs? This CD is good medicine, and it is both a worthy addition to the gospel music shelf and perhaps just the sort of musical medicine that turns out to be good for you, on more than one level of body, mind, and soul. Not a bitter root aftertaste, nor a nagging fishy oil payback in any of this welcome elixir. I guess that is why we call it, Good News.

The arrangements of new and old gospel standards have been set by counter-tenor Joseph Jennings - a leading Chanticleer member of long standing - intently drawing upon both the florid improvisations of the soloists and gospel groups climbing ever so dazzlingly into the fiery chariots that sacred texts say carried off the prophet; and yes, rooted as well in the impeccably crafted close harmonies and inwardly solid strength of gospel quartets and ensembles like Fisk University's Jubilee Singers and many other exemplars.

So, when you listen to this one you will be immediately surrounded by that amazing and great, gathering could of witnesses. The messages are familiar: Keep your hands on the plow. Surely God is able. There is a balm in Gilead.

Like the famous vocal work by Ralph Vaughan Williams, his Serenade to Music as written for a star-crossed group of well-known British soloists of the era; so this gospel outing brings the small male ensemble Chanticleer to the fore - both as a vocal group and as a fabulous collection of solo voices who are prodigiously gifted vocal stars in their own rights. Capping off Chanticleer as an embarrassment of riches is a guest turn by San Francisco's own Bishop Yvette Flunder. She is the real deal, too, as both an ordained minister whose leadership in black churches has blazed fireworks in celebration of melding religion with social justice, and a Jen-U-Wine good news singer who can preach and pray and moan with the best of them.

Only the superhumanly perfected intonation of their cappella group singing, as well as the superb blend and polish of the Chanticleer dozen, will remind a listener than this group is as famous for its Flemish medieval polyphony or its unerring Purcellian clarity, as any other ensemble of twelve voices now appearing before us.

So, forget all the categories and musicology boxes which would seal off gospel music from pre-Bach cathedral masters of polyphony. With this CD we can just revel in the mysteries of good music, regardless. Yeah, Josquin, I'm talking bout you - Sit down servant, there's plenty good room.

I'm not a huge fan of gospel, because I find it to be led by emotion, and musically undisciplined. Rousing, yes - but a little goes a long, long way. I've also found most gospel recordings to be sonically challenged. Almost as if microphones were incapable of capturing the music with clarity. None of this holds true for "How Sweet the Sound." This is a beautifully recorded cd, and every tune is both musically precise, and emotionally resonant. It is, however, a little hard to listen to in one sitting because of the "sameness" of the arrangements. That's a small quibble - who says any cd has to be experienced all at once - and "There is a Balm in Gilead," alone is worth the price of admission.

Best Chanticleer CD Yet.......2005-02-01

This is the Best Chanticleer CD yet. I have listened to it dozens of times. Money well spent. I have even given copies to several of my friends.

How Angry the Sound?.......2005-01-02

My daughter gave me this CD, because, while I'm not religious, I'm a long time fan of gospel music. The first pass through the record, I found myself wandering off to other tasks. So, the second time I put it on the player I forced myself to sit completely through the record. I'm not familiar with Chanticleer, so I had no idea whey she thought I'd like it, but she's is right more often than not. This would be one of the "not" times.

I guess this as an attempt to make gospel music "hip." With songs like "Jesus Hits Like An Atomic Bomb" and "What You Gon' Do When the World's On Fire?" the lyrics are like walking a American urban street being threatened by strangers. Far from being uplifting, the songs are decidedly unfriendly. The feel of the music reminded more of the howling noises I suffered as a forced member of my parent's Kansas Methodist Church than the sweet, honest sounds of real gospel music. That intangible thing I get from listening to gospel music that is heartfelt and painfully honest, even if deluded, was nowhere to be heard in "How Sweet the Sound." Instead, the music is chant-like, monotonous, and cold.

I would not recommend this record to anyone outside of the Midwest. If you miss the sterile sounds of a Midwestern protestant church in full howl, this might be your cup of weak wine. If gospel music is what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

This CD is the bomb!.......2004-11-28

From "Jesus Hits Like an Atom Bomb" to "Amazing Grace", this CD is packed with glorius gospel spirituals and terrific talent. Highly recommend to music lovers of all faiths!

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
