5 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to American Classical Music - Almost a Short Course!.......2005-07-12

Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.

There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.

I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Power pop nonpariel!.......1999-07-02

As one of Australia's best kept secrets, Screamfeeder play *the* true kind of classic power pop - melodic, tons of hooks, great lyrics, and did i mention the tunes?! Imagine the driving intensity and riffage of Superchunk, crossed with a hint of Fountains Of Wayne, Husker Du, a little Velocity Girl and Versus for good measure. But better. The singles are all killers - Static, Gravity and the irresistable bouncines of Dart are destined to be classics - but ignore the rest of the songs at your own risk. The drum fills that punctuate every line of Bridge Over Nothing; the emo/punk blast of Bruises; bassist Kellie's vocal debut Down The Drinker; Explode Your Friends and Pigtails On A Rock for the introspective moody shades you wear when the party's over - every track is a winner, and there's nothing in this album that would make you even think of hitting the Next button. This was one of my favourite albums when it was first released in 1997. It's been one of those cds that I always end up playing ever so often though by now i know every song inside out. Can't get tired of it. Now it's been remastered, some tracks remixed, couple songs taken out and replaced by the AWESOME b-side (that should never have been so relegated) Summertime and repackaged with a whole new look and life. Screamfeeder rock, and this album represents them at their best. Most highly recommended indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent alt country sounds.......2006-12-31

There is not a bad album among The Naysayer selections. If you like a smoky alt country sound you will like The Naysayer. Some songs are more towards slow-core minimalism, some more towards mainstream alt country, some definitely more swirling psychedelic. More than a little tinges of the Velvet Underground, Nico, Lisa Germano, Mazzy Star, Jennifer O'Connor, and the Cowboy Junkies throughout.

Is it possible to be more deadpan than Lou Reed? Anna Padgett, aka the Naysayer, seems perfectly willing to give the reigning king of moodiness a run for his money. On her new release, Kitten Time, the Naysayer has supplanted much of the playful mood of her music with a darker and sometimes dour approach that could, if you're not paying attention, be mistaken for misery. The truth is Kitten Time has little or nothing to do with malaise and everything to do with simply being bizarre with a straight face. Think Syd Barrett post-Pink Floyd and without the mental illness and you're on the right track. Odes to shrimp with a "Danny Boy" hymnal string section and a stream-of-consciousness rant about New Jersey are what we've come to expect from Padgett but, if it's possible, she's jammed her tongue even harder into her cheek. Songs like "Are You Still Weird?" and "I Seen Death (and it ain't pretty)"; nearly drown in their own deadpan delivery but are saved every time by some little thing: a whistled refrain, a nonsensical chorus or some other little bit of musical oddness breaks the illusion and shows Padgett smirking sardonically behind the dirge-like tempos and often minimalist instrumentation. Unlike he r p revious records (most notably last year's Pure Beauty EP) Padgett requires that her audience listen for the gag; if you're not listening, you'll hate Kitten Time. Everything on the album is a delayed punch line. In any given verse two lines will be scarifyingly serious until you're thrown by the last line ("my eyes are wettin' because you keep not lettin'/our love grow you've got it chained under heavy, man-made, Anna-proof locks" from "Yellow In Amarillo"). How well Kitten Time works depends entirely upon how far you're willing to wait; but for the patient, it's unlikely that a smarter songwriter exists in independent music right now. (Bill Adams)
