About the Artist
Two years ago, a group of young musicians gathered in the family garage to start a band. After many permutations, the result was Day of Infamy, which met with some success, including shows at the Whiskey and Hard Rock Live, a single played on over 100-college radio stations and even a four page spread in Blast magazine capitalizing on the youth of the band. But with every seeming success, the band began to realize they were displeased with the direction of their music. They decided to make a change, and with the addition of Mic. Kirkland as lead singer, the band became Through You. A name the band believes pays tribute to their supporters and their fans. Propelled by the strong and sincere vocals of new front man Mic. Kirkland, the band began writing and evolving and it wasn't long before they were ready for a new recording. With confidence in their new found musical direction, the band flew to New York to record with engineer Mike Watts (Hopesfall) at Vu Du Studios. Out of those recording sessions came a six song EP named Silhouette. Mixed and mastered by Jon Marshall Smith (Richard Buckner, Joey Ramone, Mosquitos) it ranges from the aggressive "Harbor," to the moving "Orchid." The CD is slated for release in April of 2005 on Parafora Music, and is certain to turn heads. Live, the band's dynamic and scope is no less commanding. Guitarist Michael van den Berg brings a strong energy to the stage, gripping the audience seemingly without effort. Bassist Jeremy Morris brings the deepest tones and a confidence to the stage that shows, the young King van den Berg is indeed shocking to behold; the foundation for which the entire band places their trust. And lastly, Mic. Kirkland, whose vocal arsenal is matched by his on stage charisma. Confident and sincere, Through You compels an audience to not only listen, but to believe in what they are hearing and seeing. With this kind of range and ability, with this kind of passion and sincerity, Through You will continue to make a lasting mark on modern music. Hear the record, see them live and we are confident that you will agree.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Jazz album.......2004-10-20

This is perhaps the best place to start with Sun Ra - demonstrating his full roots in Ellington, Monk, and Space! But seriously - this guy is a true master - his compositions are imagineative - he is a master leader- the solos are all inspired - and everything is together. In Jazz there are 4 composers who really were ingenious - Monk, Mingus, Ellington, and Ra - there are some other great ones to - but these are the ones that really stand out to me!

5 out of 5 stars space jazz.......2004-07-28

This is one of the best jazz albums from the 1950s. More like swing and bop than the free style Ra became noted for later on. The tune Images is a standout, being something like Monk's Off Minor. This is music for a future that has yet to arrive. Ancient Aethiopia will take you all the way there in time and place. Arguably, this is Sun Ra's best album ever!

5 out of 5 stars Any Herman Blount record will educate you.......2003-05-01

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of Sun Ra albums. Not all in print of course. This one is pretty nice. Some like this one are jazz with a slight twist. Some are completely abstract, some are something different from anything you've ever heard. There are Do Wop and Disco Sun Ra albums made well before the terms Do Wop and Disco were coined. As a matter of fact it could be argued that Sun Ra invented Do Wop, Disco, rock and fusion jazz since he was experimenting in these genres long before most anyone else. They are all worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Session.......2000-10-24

This was released on Ra's Saturn label in 1957. It's not quite as startling, colorful, or brilliant as "SuperSonic Jazz", which he released in 1956; the edges seem to have been filed down a bit on the music. But it's good stuff, listenable jazz with an exotic edge.

The one amazing track here is "Ancient Aethiopia" - it fuses eastern & western motifs together and sounds well ahead of its time.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2000-05-10

I am a Sun Ra rookie. I heard of him, but never heard him. So, unlike other reviewers here, this is my first Sun Ra album. And I love it. More precisely, I think that its a masterpiece. One of those albums you here and just know you discovered a wide new world. Music will never sound the same again! (*written while hearing this album again, and dicovering how great it is).

5 out of 5 stars Great singing.......2006-03-01

Roberta Alexander is stunning in these songs of Bernstein. Her voice simply shimmers. Really beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Only Roberta.......2003-12-02

Roberta Alexander is right on top of this recording. She has a beautiful and strong voice, but more importantly, she has perfect command of the music and idiom of these and Ives' songs. The emotional range of the songs is very wide, ranging from playful to thoughtful to sorrowful but she makes all of them sound very natural.

The Five Kid Songs express the imagination of a small child (Jupiter has seven moons, or is it nine? Saturn has a million billion trillion sixty-nine) and it would be very easy to perform them in a childish way, talking down as many adults do - the composer expressly stated that they should not be performed this way and in fact Alexander sings them with a perfectly natural innocence. La Bonne Cuisine is sung with a strong drive, and although it's hard to imagine what anyone should do with excerpts from a cooking book it's still compelling music. The other songs are also nice but not as memorable - as for the songs from Candide, they are beautiful but get the complete recording on Deutsche Grammophon, directed by Bernstein himself (there are two; I prefer the live version, ASIN B000001GD2).

Tan Crone does more than just provide a background; she adds her own interpretation on piano to add even more feeling to the music.

Bernstein's songs do not have the depth of Ives', but this is still a very nice collection. I will have to check out the Barber and Copland recordings on the same label as well.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams can come true.......2004-07-24

Pieces of a Dream have been around for a long time and so has this reviewer. My exposure to POAD goes back to their beginnings. As an avid listener to Temple University's WRTI-FM in Philadelphia and frequent visitor to the Philadelphia jazz scene, what a road it's been. Finally, when I thought I'd see a "No Outlet" sign around the corner, it came to this ... I jumped off the airwaves and down to the reality of an honest to goodness purchase of one of the best CDs in smooth jazz.

Fact is the album consists of fourteen tracks with a total time of one hour and seven minutes and the listener gets his or her money's worth. Here's where it really gets good... the first time I heard a demo of this entire album, across the store aisle was the object of my desire. One listen and she could see I was hooked ... to the album. Curtis Harmon, steady and soulful on drums, and James Lloyd, a creative talent with a distinctive touch on keyboards, have released, with "Love's Silhouette," one of their best ever albums. The chemistry that these two stellar groovologists and the band generated was instantly electric as I absorbed the songs.

This disc exudes emotion that'll get down deep inside you at an emotional level transcending titles, topics and genre. It connects with your soul while demonstrating that music is all about experience and feelings and appreciation. There is much about this album that demonstrates the staying power of the group.

Some individual highlights include Tracy Hamlin's vocals that make a very nice connection with POAD. Tracy has a beautiful voice that shines on "Turning It Up," "I Feel Like Singin'," "Mystical Perception," and the traditionally jazzy and climactic rendition of "My Funny Valentine." The best of these, in my opinion, is the upbeat "I Feel Like Singin'!"

Eddie Baccus Jr. contributes an outstanding performance on saxes. As one hears this album, the listener catches a glimpse of the confidence level that Curtis and James have attained. While some artists never seem to consider the concept that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, on this album the listener gets a sense of Harmon and Lloyd sharing a sound stage with Eddie as well as their other collaborators to create truly beautiful music. As such, one of my favorites featuring Eddie is "Pieceful Dreams" which contains a joyfully romantic melody.

Prepare to be moved by "Remembrance (9/11/01)," a beautiful song that's in tribute to a modern tragedy. This tune demonstrates a plaintively hopeful calm after the storm with percussive elements framing James on the piano and highlighting Todd Parsnow's guitar prominently in the mix.

Love...a theme...to dream. Enjoy this music and fall in love all over. This review is dedicated to the love of my life (LAZR). I wish you all the best!

5 out of 5 stars TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS FOR THIS ONE FOLKS....LETS GET BUSY!!!!.......2004-01-19

This is a very well put together album.A great cd to get your groove on to.Get your honey ready cause this is gonna be a blast.HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, man, that's real smooth jazz!.......2003-05-28

Anybody who considers smooth jazz as being below their intellectual dignity deserves to give this a listen. A lot that passes for smooth jazz is simply watered down jazz, but this CD presents music with a life all its own, a life that just happens to fit the smooth jazz genre.

There's a wealth of sound, rythym, and feeling in the originals, but even the old standby, "My Funny Valentine", comes across with a fresh sound.

Jazz purists shouldn't find this below their dignity, nor should those adherents of light contemporary instrumentalists find it challenging. Both camps should be pleased by this.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and worth the price.......2003-05-12

I started to become a big Pieces of a Dream fan after I discoverd
one of their earlier CDs 'In Flight'. This CD, Love's Silhouette is very well written and produced . The songs are very catchy and feature great keyboard and percussion work as well as some great background vocals on several tracks. This is the kind of CD you can listen to while at work or cruising around in your car because it keeps your attention with plent of up-tempo songs as well as some slow jams. I had the opprtunity to see them in concert with Gerald Veasley, Kim Waters and Angela Bofil and they put on one of the best jazz shows I have ever seen. Check them out if they come to your town, you will not regret it. This group genuinely look like they are having the time of their life when they are playing onstage.

5 out of 5 stars Funky, jazzy solid combination of styles.......2005-10-15

A must-buy for anyone who likes their jazz smooth, but not raido smooth; who likes their dance tracks with a little more flair then 4-to-the-floor; who likes their electronica with some warmth. This incredibly produced and thought-through record really sells itsef on its merits: strong performances, tight and wild arrangements, funk for days...a great record for that eclectic house party. This is what radio should sound like.

4 out of 5 stars Better and better..........2005-05-07

I have been a long time fan of producers Kaidi Tatham and Dego/4hero, so I bought this album. At first I wasn't impressed at all, but the more I listened to this the more I loved it. It's very delicate music, with pretty chords, and the vocalist Deborah Jordan, has a really pure voice to complement. It all sounds simple at first, but you realise that it's actually quite subtle, deep music (although I found some of the lyrics a bit pretentious). If you are into people like Jill Scott and Raphael Saddiq then you will probably like this british take on the neo-soul sound. Just make sure you give it time to digest.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album!!!.......2005-04-27

The vocalists in this album down to the Producers are just incredible! This album should be one of the top 10 of the charts, yet people will tend to oversee it because of the garbage hype of today. This album is AWESOME! I ran across an mp3 of "Spread That" and was sold ever since. Great to play all 4 seasons, in the ride, w/ friends @ a lounge party, a BBQ, family reunion, aw heck this album would be great practically anywhere ('cept for funerals ;-p) If you like the likes of D'Nell & The Underwolves, GRAB THIS!! This is one of those much needed albums of today, absolutely wonderful! I couldn't believe what I was in for... just fantabulous!

Kudos~ PM

My favorite tracks:
-Spread That
-Whose In Charge!!
-Just a Little More
-Pain (It's Gonna Come)
-Monday's Coming

But the entire album is great, trust!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty much anything associated with Dego is a must have.......2005-04-14

The other half of these amazing drum patterns is Kaidi. Together they deliver some of the best broken beat nujazz tracks on the planet. Joining for this adventure from the 2000Black family are the sexy vocals of Deborah Jordan of the once known jazz band, Panacea. They all come together and form the hot team called: "Silhouette Brown". Like the Clara Hill joint I've already stamped with my "best release" of 04 and the release D.K.D. - Futue Rage (by these same 2 broken beat gaints), this CD will be in heavy rotation for awhile.

Grab this one quick.

oNe

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet!.......2005-03-19

Pick This Up immediately!!! If you enjoy the innovative sounds of Dego from 4hero, and the keys of Kaidi Tatham you will explode when you hear this CD. Upstart vocalist Deborah Jordan absolutely laces each and every melody and if that is not enough Bembe Segue plays a supporting role and does a handful of background vocals! I know that the West London (broken beat) sound is just starting to leak in the US, but hear me now cop this or be left out in the cold. The album starts with Who's In Charge an hypnotic anthem that sets a perfect tone for the album. As a matter of fact the song encourages all naysayers to not play safe, but make your move. A perfect intro to an audio dream. Trust Me Make Your move and Cop this joint pronto!

Leonard Bernstein occupies a unique position in the music world for his protean, multi-faceted talents. His ability to draw on and absorb every cultural influence made him the ultimate eclectic, yet he eventually forged a style that was unmistakably his own. This record, which includes vocal, choral and instrumental pieces, some never recorded, performed or published, demonstrates that his Jewish heritage played a formative, lasting, decisive role in this process. The earliest, Psalm 148 (sung in English), written when he was 17, is steeped in an ultra-romantics style, especially Wagner's; it hardly contains a hint of the later Bernstein, but its innocent sweetness is infinitely touching. The longest, Halil, is a virtuoso piece for flute with piano and percussion, written 1981 in memory of a 19-year-old Israeli flutist killed 1973 in the Yom Kippur War. Also written for specific occasions and friends are Silhouette for Jennie Tourel's birthday and Three Wedding Dances for the marriage of Adolph Greene and Phyllis Newman. Excerpts from longer works include At My Wedding from Arias and Barcarolles, a description of a young fiddler playing for a wedding that is both funny and affecting, sung in Yiddish, a chorus from the ballet The Dybbuk, a section of Concerto for Orchestra. These, like several sacred selections--prayers, invocations, hymns of thanks and praise for various parts of the Service--are sung in Hebrew. The most substantial is Hashkiveinu, a prayer for peace, commissioned by the Cantor of a New York synagogue, for tenor solo, chorus and organ, featuring call and response, cantorial chanting and very daring harmonies and tonal juxtapositions. Bernstein later recycled some of this material for other, very different compositions, like films and musicals, perhaps indicating that he considered this style the connecting thread of his creative life. The performances are uniformly excellent; Réaux, Blochwitz and the pianists stand out. --Edith Eisler

"What are the Jewish roots I long for?" wrote Leonard Bernstein as he pondered one of his many Jewish-inspired compositions. This unique collection of rarely heard works—including several world-premiere recordings—reveals many possible answers to Bernstein's question. Triumphal processions, mysterious invocations, intimate Jewish character portraits, rousing dances; all of these musical offerings present the great eclectic imagination of one of America's foremost 20th century composers.

5 out of 5 stars the greatest Kenton.......2007-04-03

I can beat the other memories - around 1955 when I bought this record - it was splendid then and it is NOW (at my age of 77).
I do not agree with all the music Kenton made but I thought at the time that this was the music of the future. Alas, he seems all but forgotten.

2 out of 5 stars Standards in Silouette.......2006-11-11

In my opinion, this is 1959 album is rather weak Kenton. For me these Bill Mathieu arrangements just don't cut it compared to the powerful Kenton sound so characteristic of arrangements by Bill Russo, Lennie Niehaus, et al.

I don't know, others seem to like it. I'll give it 2 stars just because of the excellent solos.

      5 out of 5 stars A Kenton Classic Must-Have Album!.......2000-02-03

This is one of my FAVORITE Stan Kenton albums of all time! Great arrangements by Bill Mathieu and tremendous playing of it by one of the best Kenton bands....Mathieu's charts used counter-melodies with the main melody to set some beautiful moods. This was one of Capitol Records' "theme-type" Kenton albums (they even had Stan record an album of Tex Ritter songs! I swear it! ) and sets a definite "blues mood."

The band was really HOT ( Bill Trujillo, Don Sebesky, Archie LeCoque, Rolf Ericson and some of the best playing I ever heard from Charlie Mariano on alto, share the solos). The trumpet section featured (4)--count 'em---superb lead players: Bud Brisbois, Dalton Smith, Bill Chase & Roger Middleton! ... Add the always-great Kenton trombones and WOW ! Some of the full-band ensemble playing will startle and amaze the musicians listening, but you don't have to be one to appreciate the music--it will totally wrap you up and sweep you off to another world. ( My vinyl copy was pretty worn, so the CD is a welcome reissue, and "Lazy Afternoon, " which I only heard on a live, one-mike recording once before, is a nice bonus). Kenton fans who missed this one will want to add it to their favorites, too !

5 out of 5 stars The Kenton Band at its BEST !.......2000-01-25

Thank God they finally remastered this for CD ! (After 30 years of playing it, my LP was about worn away). Many Kenton albums followed a theme (an idea Capitol Records carried to the ridiculous when they even had Stan do an album of Tex Ritter songs -- I swear it's TRUE! )...and this one features TERRIFIC (and very challenging) arrangements from Bill Mathieu all the way through. The writing uses counter-melodies and the familiar close Kenton-style harmonies to weave a sort of magic spell as you listen to it. The musicians ? There are Bill Trujillo on tenor and Archie LeCoque on trombone, both of whom still reside here in Las Vegas. Then there's the best alto playing I ever heard from Charlie Mariano, and there's Don Sebesky, Rolf Ericson and of course, Stan himself. The trumpet section besides Rolf featured (4)--count 'em--great lead players: Bud Brisbois, Dalton Smith, Bill Chase and Roger Middleton, plus Clyde Reasinger on a pair of tracks. Add the "stalwarts" in the bone section (Kent Larson, Jim Amlotte and Bob Knight) and WOW ! You wanna' talk powerhouse bands ? "Lazy Afternoon" is a bonus on the CD, which I never knew still existed--but I'm glad they included it here. THIS IS CLASSIC KENTON! Ahead of its time, extremely well-played and running the gamut of musical emotion, from moody to funny with these great charts. You'll probably keep it in YOUR collection forever, too !

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly not horrible.......2007-01-20

Released in 1988 this is Kenneth Gorelick's fifth solo album. This is his second smash hit album, topping the jazz charts and nearly hitting number 1 on the Billboard top 200. The sound quality is very good. It is 48 minutes long.

With Kenny G, there seems to be the people who love him and the people who hate him and no middle ground. It is easy to sneer at him with his long wavy hair and soft jazz getting airplay on the easy listening and pop rock stations.

But, for a soft jazz musician, he is better than most. His compositions are fluid and interesting. Many soft jazz groups just go the sound and repetitiously play some pop hook. Kenny G's music is more imaginative than most.

But, it is still soft, pop jazz and is weak in some parts. It still have trouble getting past the opening title track. This is mainly because it was so overplayed, and there some parts that just get on your nerves. But, if it wasn't overplayed and if you listen carefully to the whole thing, you find it is a pretty good composition.

This is typical late eighties soft jazz. It even includes a few vocal tracks. It is the type of music most jazz muscians were playing at the time, even the old time fusion superstars like Billy Cobham and Chic Corea. It isn't as good as something by Billy Cobham, but it is certainly better than most of the mainstream pop jazz of that time.

      5 out of 5 stars Smooth.......2006-06-24

Born Kenneth Gorelick, Kenny G is probably the best known American saxophonist. He rose to fame in the 1980s, and has gone places no other jazz musician has gone - in 2003, Kenny G was named the 25th-highest selling artist in America by the RIAA! Some dislike what he has done in the name of jazz, but it is hard to argue with success.

In fact, I love the smooth sound of Kenny G, and like this album immensely. Probably my favorite song on the album is We've Saved The Best Last with the legendary Smokey Robinson providing the vocal. Overall, I think that this is a great album. If you like the smooth jazzy sound of Kenny G, you'll like this CD. I highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Kenny But You Laid An Egg!.......2004-06-09

I know Kenny G practiced,I know how good he can be and most of all I've heard him WAILING on Jeff Lorber tunes like the
spiraling "Galaxian".So WHY THIS???Kenny-easy listening elevator
music is NOT the place for you to be!And considering the overall
caliber of your first three albums in the early 80's you MIGHT
have had an nice R&B audiance along with David Sanborn and
Grover Washington.Well instead your bound for the dentists office. So unless you enjoy that kind of thing then stick with
his albums from 1982 to 1985.

5 out of 5 stars My first and favorite Kenny G CD!.......2004-01-01

This was the first Kenny G CD I got, and I still can't get enough of listening to Silhouette the title track! I would also highly recommend his CD The Moment, another gem from a talented, sensitive man. I do wish people who know they do not like a particular musician would quit reviewing their work, as it gives an inaccurate rating to those who do enjoy the artist. Spend some time giving a comparative, thoughtful review to someone who you do like, and spare the rest of us your rhetoric!

Start to finish this is an amazing cd. The sound quality is excellent along with the track arrangements. People you need to check this one out. Very good music by this young man. If you are a smooth jazz listener, pick this CD up as soon as you can. This CD is going to be a huge success for Dean, and further open the doors to the success and recognition he richly deserves. The title cut "Brighter Days" is headed for continuous airplay. Thanks 95.7 "The Wave" in Houston for playing this one so much for everyone to hear. It is smooth, upbeat, lively, and a treasure to listen to. The next track, "Just for You" is a beautiful, wonderfully arranged song with exquisite sax playing. Dean plays alto and soprano on this CD and showcases them well.
My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing Dean perform two days before the release of this CD in Beaumont Texas, and also meeting him in person. What an outstanding show! Not only is he a fantastic sax player, but he has a great personality, a tremendous onstage interaction with the audience, and took the time to talk with all of his fans. His performance onstage was simply awesome. He has complete mastery of the saxophone, and is backed by a powerhouse band. Another beautiful track is "Song for Miyah" followed by another beauty entitled, "Thoughts". Each song is a gem and I have been playing this CD continuously since I bought it......"It's that good!" Pick this one up immediately, then grab yourself a glass of wine, relax, and enjoy this entire CD.
Congratulations Dean on this awesome CD, and it was a pleasure meeting you!
      Thanks for the beautiful music!
