    3 out of 5 stars A pretty-looking demo.......2005-06-02

Oh, wretched drum machine! You sound like such a dead fish. You transform every decent song you touch into a half-hearted plod. Even when someone sits down to diligently program you, you sound cold and sterile. At least you did in the eighties...

Steve Kilbey made The Slow Crack while the Church were shopping around for a record deal after being rudely dropped from EMI. And as good a songwriter/performer Kilbey is, his solo career has and will always will be dwarfed in comparison to any Church album simply because the band isn't there for him with which to bounce ideas. All that remains are the skeletons of his songs with rather lackluster production.

The result it a demo with a wild looking cover (dig that artwork). Some of these songs are almost-realized pop (Transaction, Fireman, Like A Ghost, Something That Means Something) while other pieces feel like thrown-together slop that was taken off the grill a little too pink (Song of Solomon, Consider Yourself Conquered, Ariel Sings).

Of course, if you are reading this right now, chances are you are a Church fan to begin with. And if that's so, you may feel it's your duty to pick this up. Purely from a song-quality point of view, The Slow Crack is pretty good. From a production standpoint, this reeks of blahness. The drum machine is irritating and Kilbey's vocals have too much low frequency in them.

It's hard to listen to The Slow Crack without wishing that it could have been better sounding. This plagues plenty of Kilbey's other solo works and slightly mired the Church's Gold Afternoon Fix and the first Jack Frost album. Still, not bad at all.

4 out of 5 stars If you were fond of "Heyday," this may be to your liking........2005-02-17

Church fans, this moderately hard to find album (until now) is well worth the search. To be sure, there are a few "filler" cuts amongst the 12 tracks on "The Slow Crack," but those that shine through do so brilliantly. Careful scrutiny of the liner notes reveals a 1987 copyright, so it should come as no surprise that many of the tracks sound quite similar to those on "Heyday." This should be a pleasant surprise to devotees of The Church. The opening track, "Transaction," is without a doubt the album's finest moment, but "Fireman" and "A Favorite Pack of Lies" are well worth the price of admission in themselves. The album begins to lose a bit of creative steam about 2/3 of the way through, but even its dullest moments still sound good enough to be outtakes from "Remote Luxury" or "Seance."

Overall, there are 3 or 4 solid cuts that make this album worthwhile for the serious Church fan. I would not recommend it, however, for the more casual fan or one who is just turning on and tuning in to the band. For the record (pun intended), I'll say that I agree with reviewer J. Garrett that many of the songs sound as if they were "taken off the grill while still pink." You will too I'm sure, but the 3 or 4 solid tracks that shine through are well done (pun intended again). I really believe that had "Transaction" made its way to "Starfish" with its superior production, the band may have had no less than 2 big breakthrough U.S. hits!
